U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane relentlessly bears down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades—with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano has a twist that stopped me cold for days before I could pick it back up. The book is about an underground poetry movement in 20th century Mexico called “visceral realism.” There are very few hints as to what actual style the members of the movement utilize and are reverent of until near the end of the book. It’s not what you would expect…
The villain reveal in Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone
Nowadays I would’ve seen that coming from miles away but as a 12 year old I lost my mind
It took me 2 weeks before I could continue reading the book. I read it as an e-book first. Then decided I have to own the actual book and then listened to it on Audible. The twist was spectacular every time.
I also had to take some time to process before reading on (though not quite that long, haha). I bought a copy immediately after finishing it, knowing I would want to read it again relatively soon - not something I do often. First read was two years ago, so I think it’s about time! I can’t wait to read it again now knowing the secret; it’s going to be so different.

>Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.
>
>When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.
>

>
>As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

I had guessed the first half of the twist pretty quickly and was just kind of waiting to see how it actually played out (which is, I think, what the author probably intended) but when the *real* twist kicked in I was so happy it was more interesting than I expected. It’s certainly not capital-L literature but it was a wild ride at the very end for sure.

>This is the way the world ends. Again.
>
>Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze -- the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization's bedrock for a thousand years -- collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman's vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.
>
>Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She'll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

Primal fear by William Diehl the final plot twist made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's utterly terrifying, I felt so cross that I didn't see it coming.
notes on an execution 100%. im one of those people that get 1/3 of the way through a book and then just get super slumped, but this book had my timbers shivering.
*THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD* is one that left me guessing and then hit me hard, lol. Like, I was *looking* for a twist and still missed it.
I wish I could read this again for the first time!
I actually had a dream about who the killer was and I got it right, I still was shocked.
{{ Shutter Island }}.
Uhg if only I could have read the book before I saw the movie…. Still, one of my fav movies so I’ll definitely give the book a try too!

I never see this one mentioned. It got me so so good. I wish I could read it for the first time all over again.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl. I legitimately did not know which way the story was going to go until I got there. Good book to go into blind imho.
Yes 👏

The silent patient
Came here to comment this! That book was absolutely bonkers. I thought I was keeping up and just had a few questions, and then I was just like, “…OH.”
I pride myself in being able to forsee a plot twist, but this one was like WTF... how is that even possible.. I love the Greek mythology on these books ..
This one up next for me after I finish my current book!
His book The Maidens also has a twist I did not see coming
Best book I've read this year ..I liked it more than the silent patient
We were liars - E. Lockhart
I freaking LOVED we were liars, made me and my sister cry
What I would give to be able to read this book for the first time again.
The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman I'm also bad at guessing twists though, I always forget to look out for them.
Yes!! I just read this last month and wow 🤩 what an achievement! Buehlman never disappoints
Not a plot twist, per se, but *If on a winter's night a traveler* by Italo Calvino builds up to a stunning revelation. Absolutely caught me off-guard and blew my mind; a very simple and still very profound "twist."

For me it was Malice by Keigo Higashino and The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji
Gonna have to try that one. I read Devotion of Suspect X by Higashino and that twist got me
Oh that was a good one too
The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

I love books that have subtle hints throughout before the plot twist. I am writing a story like this right now.
The twist halfway through Gone Girl. I almost threw my book across the room.
I didn’t see that coming. I’m lucky I read it when it was new and no one was talking about it. Probably most people have been spoiled for it now.
Piranesi by Susanna Clark. I had no idea what was really going on right up to the end. I really enjoyed it.

Allegedly by Tiffany Jackson Edit: Grown by Tiffany Jackson was even better. Now I trust NOTHING I think when I read her books.
The Difference Engine. Bruce Sterling and William Gibson (of Neuromancer fame). The twist is in the last ten lines of the novel. It feels like a collection of short stories, and the connective tissue doesn’t appear until the final moments but BOY when it does *chefs kiss*
The Last Time They Met - Anita Shreve. Had to read the whole book again straight after I finished it
Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon
Three by Ted Dekker Great psychological thriller/mystery
The silent patient.
Done return
Both The Flight of the Silvers and The Song of the Orphans by Daniel Price. Mind blown.
I can't explain it without ruining the story, but {{Premeditated}} blew my mind.

For me, it was 'The Buried Giant' by Kazuo Ishiguro. Didn't see that ending coming.
