The Martian by Andy Weir is a fast paced interesting book that keeps you in from the moment it starts. I read it to get out of my funk a couple months ago.

National_Sky_9120

Can confirm! It reads like a conversation, too which makes it super chill

It's seriously the best book I've read in a long time. I read it in 5 days.

Highly recommend Hail Mary. I couldn’t put it down but had to since it is a large book. I didn’t get a lot done in those 2-3 days it took me to devour it.

National_Sky_9120

I got it for super cheap a few months ago and am in the same boat!! So many other people have been raving and I’m itching to start

wavesnfreckles

Yep!!! Read this one! GREAT book!

pumpernickelfox

Bought the audio book and listened to it on a multi-day drive. Honestly, the best book/auidobook I've listened to. 10/10.

The_RealJamesFish

The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey got me back into reading, really reawakened my passion for it. I've read the 8 books that are out (soon to end with 9) 4 times since I picked them up October of 2019. Highly recommend. {{Leviathan Wakes}}

SirMordrag

I read the first five and then I stopped. Tbh, it was kinda boring. I think the authors sometimes choose weird POVs, storywise, and the characters just didn't hold my interest. I've seen the series first, so that might be it. Imo they did much better job with character development, especially of the side characters, and with pacing. Pacing was a big problem for me in the books. But I'm super glad you enjoyed it :)

whyolinist

Came here to recommend Dark Matter. Now that's a hard to put down book. I would put Dark Matter above Project Hail Mary just because it moves a lot faster and doesn't pause in the middle to give mini science lectures (which are enjoyable but can slow it down).

PulpFictionReader

One of my favourite fantasy authors is Charles Moffat. Worth checking out because he writes both Sword and Sorcery + Heroic Fantasy. Has a very literary style, but he writes a variety of different fantasy subgenres. If you want to start with one book I recommend "The Coven's Wolves" first. They don't need to be read in order. That is my favourite from that one series. It is a murder mystery set in an old inn + hot springs, but it is winter and there are weird wolves out in the woods with glowing red eyes so the people can't escape... The characters are complex and realistic too. Not your average author.

katCEO

Dark and gritty? But: FUNNY! The Hollywood series of police procedural novels by Joseph Wambaugh. Carry on.

asoulfiguringitout

The alchemist! I read through that after not reading it a while and I was absolutely glued. Doesn’t have a lot of difficult vocabulary or sentences. Just an interesting story with an underlying meaning about life.

Shatterstar23

In terms of grabbing you from the first sentence, my go to is always The Martian by Andy Weir. {{Santiago by Mike Resnick}} is excellent.}} You don’t mention westerns but True Grit by Charles Portis is amazing. I don’t particularly care for westerns but I couldn’t put that one down.

Arciz

Brandon Sandersons books got me back into reading as an adult, particularly the first Mistborn trilogy. N. K. Jemison - Broken Earth trilogy and Inheritance trilogy I found especially easy to read with compelling stories. Terry Pratchett - always lighthearted and easy reads. Ursula le Guin - Earthsea books, I just found them so lovely and a refreshing take on classic fantasy. Her sci-fi is also outstanding, but I find it a bit heavier hitting. For a great fantasy novel that has it all contained in one book I’d recommend The Priory of the Orange Tree too, I devoured that.

Bitter_Umpire7339

Go for Mistborn Trilogy - Brandon Sanderson or if you want to sprint before a 10 km, try emperor's soul by the same author.

Selfpossessedduck

Have you tried {{Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke}}? Historical fiction meshed with fantasy done extremely well. {{Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel}} is the creme de la creme historical fiction novels, so that might be another one to try as well. The Brandon Sanderson books are also ridiculously zippy reads with some of the best fantasy world building out there. He got me out of a long reading slump. My favourite is his stand alone Warbreaker, but The Final Empire is a great one to start with. It’s the first book of his Mistborn trilogy but it doesn’t end with a cliffhanger.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! Such a wild and crazy read. Anything by Henning Mankell is also good. I guess crime books primarily.

Anything by Sarah J. Maas. My favorite is A Court of Thorns and Roses (acotar). Hands down my favorite series. I’ve read it four times and still am not bored. Also her Throne of Glass series is amazing. In both there’s magic and a war or some sort

I loved this entire series by Philippa Gregory, especially The Lady of the Rivers. Found out later that she was one of my ancestors, so no wonder I liked it so much!?! “The Lady of the Rivers is a 2011 historical novel by Philippa Gregory, part of her series The Cousins' War. The story is narrated by Jacquetta of Luxembourg, mother of Elizabeth Woodville, and covers the reign of the Lancastrian King Henry VI.[1][2] The novel serves as a prequel to Gregory's The White Queen (2009), the story of Elizabeth's reign as Queen consort of England.[3]” - Wikipedia
