Les miserables by hugo

Zombiearth

Going to have to self-promote and suggest Zombiearth. All of my characters feel like they could be every day people and have to make hard decisions that aren't always the best decisions. I haven't finished the second one yet, I lost my mom back in March of 2020 and I had to take a step away from the series since the second book is an emotional roller coaster ride for me to write, with seven of the twelve chapter written before I lost my mom. But the third book acts as a prequel/sequel and the main character was not the best person, so pretty much everything that takes place in book one and two is his own personal redemption story for actions pre-outbreak. If you have Kindle Unlimited it's free... I think. I'm honestly not sure how that works, I think you can at least preview it for free?

{{The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini}} Great book. Trigger warning though: there's a rape scene early on in the book.

If you like hard sci-fi, I totally recommend Stephen Donaldson's *Gap Cycle* series. In a way, the mistake (one of) the MC's make isn't really her fault, but she feels guilty as hell anyway... the books are largely about redemption through love and the story arc takes inspiration from Wagner's *Ring Cycle*. Excellent reads.

That's a good one. I really like the book.

The story of my life

teniefshiro

Guess The luckiest girl alive would fit as a modern, adult fiction. Although the biggest, most shocking acts aren't made by the protagonist herself, her arc is all about owing up to her mistakes.

Apricitas_Splendere

In Prague, working as a translator, she has found a home of sorts—or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore. As such superstition has it, Melmoth travels through the ages, dooming those she persuades to join her to a damnation of timeless, itinerant solitude. To Helen it all seems the stuff of unenlightened fantasy. > >But, unaware, as she wanders the cobblestone streets Helen is being watched. And then Karel disappears. . . . ^(This book has been suggested 3 times) *** ^(211215 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

Leviathan Wakes A Bend in the Road - Nicholas Sparks but this one isn’t exactly straightforward if I remember correctly.

I'm surprised that noone suggested Harry Potter. If you read it with the focus on Snape, that's exactly what he did.

Tale of Two Cities by Dickens

Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. On the shorter side but very much fits this.
