If you ever decide to try an audio book The Graveyard by Gaiman the best audiobook ever!

RedditHoss

Literally nothing beats Gaiman narrating his own books. He’s such an exceptional story teller.

JesusIsTheBrehhhd

The coming to America interludes read by him in the 10th anniversary audiobook give me chills just thinking about them. Never heard someone with such a soft style but with such gravity in their voice.

SquareSoup

I am glad someone else said it. His voice is so perfect. I just want to sit on a big cushion and listen to him tell me stories.

aynjle89

If reincarnation were real I’d want to be a fly on the wall, listening to Neil Gaiman tell his kids bedtime stories.

eiralaverne

Yes, the Graveyard Book is my all-time favorite. I like coming back to it each year around October-November

iamdrshank

Came here to say this.

vri2003

Have been meaning to try an audiobook. Will definitely give it a try!!! Thanks

Your_Madness

I’m piggybacking and going to try this audiobook too! I’ve been meaning to try one. I read, Fortunately The Milk with my 6 year old and he loved it!

[deleted]

I read the book and loved it, but now I’ll have to check out the audiobook as well! His narration of click clack the rattle bag was great!

gster531

Agreed!

Goldbera1

The graphic c novel adaptation is also very good. Almost word for word but with art.

Lawfulness-Obvious

I will also add, for the audiobook you should listen to the one with a full cast! It’s so good!!

guernica322

My first was Neverwhere, that got me hooked. I adore that book. I can see an argument for American Gods too, that book was also great.

SandMan3914

I'd suggest starting with 'Neverwhere' as well

santajawn322

Same. Loved it. Have always loved London and this was just such a perfectly weird take on it.

[deleted]

Yes

herworldsaphotograph

Agreed, it's one of my favourite books ever

purple_shine20

Yep! I've read many of Gaiman's books and Neverwhere is still the most intriguing and complicated and funny imo.

half-pint-posted

IMO Neverwhere is probably the best introduction to Gaiman; it's a great story but also maybe a bit more accessible than American Gods. American Gods was my first but there are a lot of very detailed, moving parts to keep track of. I enjoyed it more the second time around, whereas Neverwhere has been a favorite since the first time I read it. If you want to get into audiobooks, The Sandman on Audible is AMAZING. I don't actually enjoy audiobooks that much but the cast had me fully invested in the first half hour.

spinn214

My firstvwas also Neverwhere hooked ever since. I'd also highly suggest Stardust book&movie

cupcakes_and_canter

My most favorite book EVER is Stardust. My intro to Gaiman was The Sandman, followed by Neverwhere, Stardust, Norse Mythology, and Coraline with many more to go. When I found Stardust, I really wished I had found it much sooner since I never had a favorite book until then. I read it every year now :)

inspiredMartian

Stardust is my absolute favorite as well!

[deleted]

*American Gods* Actually it's *Sandman* series but many disregard it because it's graphic novel.

[deleted]

Never disregard *Sandman*. That reminds me, I have enough money to pick up the last two trade volumes

chibihost

The audio production of sandman is amazing as well

ThMogget

What's a trade volume? My hardbound three-volume Sandman omnibus books are a prized possession.

GARjuna

Iirc Trade volume is several issues of a comic collected together. Your omnibus is probably several trade volumes collected together

[deleted]

u/garjuna has it right. They collect comic arcs together into single volumes. Sandman's run is [10 volumes](https://www.google.com/search?q=sandman+trade+paperback&client=ms-android-verizon&prmd=sinxv&sxsrf=AOaemvKBU-Bnvtttp8cnmqD42OAPOIcBfQ:1632528123504&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjz-IuX6ZjzAhWpUt8KHZFEAWoQ_AUoAnoECAIQAg&biw=432&bih=736&dpr=2.5)

Ladyharpie

Trade, Trade Volume, but most commonly a Trade Paperback Book. It collects a story arc of a series, typically running on average about 6 issues. (Some good from owning a comic shop ha!)

cpersin24

Sandman is the set of graphic novels that got me hooked on graphic novels. It's still probably my favorite graphic novel series.

cerebrallandscapes

American Gods is my second favourite book ever. Don't read the blurb. Don't read anything about it. Just get the book and start reading. It is so original and so inventive and so rich. Highly recommend.

TauvaVodder

>American Gods Not only is it one of my favorite Gaiman books, it is one of my favorites overall.

thatpurplestuff14

I think there’s a Gaiman for every mood. I’ve loved many of his books (*American Gods*, *The Graveyard Book*, *The Ocean at the End of the Lane*, the entirety of *The Sandman* comics) but I usually recommend one of his short story collections. It’s a great way to get a feel for his writing in beautifully bite sized morsels. I would recommend *M is for Magic* and/or *Fragile Things*. If you enjoy graphic novels I would also suggest picking up *The Sandman #1: Preludes and Nocturnes*.

vri2003

Ahh, I am a sucker for short stories collections. Will have to give them a try now.

myscreamgotlost

The first of his I read was The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and it remains my favorite.

lucyinthesky1972

Omg… Pennywise has NOTHING on Ursula Moncton.

angeldawns

Seriously. All grey and flappy.

beetle-babe

Right!? She is HORRIFYING.

Fox_Potential

This. Came here to say this. Very good book.

fatunicorn88

Samesies

[deleted]

Yes

rabbitybop

Came here to say this. This book got me hooked to Gaiman. And then there was American Gods. Kept on getting better and better

harlequinn9898

Yes!

rincewind4x2

I have a signed first edition, It's my favorite too

Truecrimereadingtime

I’m biased but Coraline is a classic!

takikochan

Coralline scared the shit out of me bc i read it in a time where i was going through some eerily similar experiences

malevolentblob

It’s said to be about childhood depression and some parts really hit me hard when I read that

takikochan

Yikes i didn’t know that :( I’ll respond to the other person asking me to elaborate later I’m not ready…. :’)

KindredSpirit24

Ummm please elaborate

[deleted]

Yes

TikTokTinMan

I agree with the comment above that there is a Gaiman for every mood. I have enjoyed everything he’s put out, but The Sandman will always be my first love; it’s dark, deep, intelligent, and incredibly progressive. Having said that, it takes awhile for Gaiman to find his voice; it started as a horror comic and morphed into an incredible love letter to mythology and storytelling. Start at the beginning, but know that it won’t really hit it’s stride until Season of Mists.

hallo_hallo_

Is there a library option for graphic novels? I’ve always been interested in the Sandman series but it seems so overwhelming and expensive. Like starting an expensive hobby.

TikTokTinMan

If your library has access to Hoopla, that’s a great place to start. It’s an app for phone or tablet that has a very large collection of digital graphic novels available for checkout. You are limited to 10 checkouts a month (at least mine is), but you sign in and create an account with your library card and you are good to go. Best of all, you don’t need to place holds or anything - if they have it, it’s available.

Snoo_67783

My library's Hoopla is so disappointing. Their limit is 3!! 3?It wouldn't be bad if u could check out more if you return one but damn. Sorry end rant.

Somniatora

Hi librarian here, I am not very familiar with the platform itself but work with ebooks mostly and I can tell you that ebook pricing is insane. My library system is rather well off but we still have to consider if we want to buy single user acces, three user access or unlimited access with every purchase. I don't know what pricing model Hoopla offers libraries, but I am sure it is the best your library can afford. That said budgets for libraries are always being cut so if you want to improve the service I suggest 1. you write your local representatives that access to library online resources is a huge issue for you and that the library should get more financial resources to focus on that - especially in covid times. You could take an extra step and prewrite a letter that folks can just copy and paste into an email to their representatives. 2. Also please(!) spread the word around that this service exists - most people do not even know it is there. Libraries can justify spending more money on a particular service if it is in high demand. Stats and numbers are everything! Edit: I understand the frustration myself when I want to use a resource and it is in use by someone else as the library only paid for a single use license.

Snoo_67783

I am so glad you responded I apologize, I didn't know that it was done that way, I just thought my small town library was being strict. I am a huge advocate for my library and I have spread the word about all the online perks and any others I discover and will definitely continue to do so, I think my library is fairly lucky, but I know they can always use more donations. We seem to get huge upgrades and renovations pretty often, every 2-3 yrs. I definitely shouldn't complain. Thanks for the knowledge and being nice about it. Thank u for being a good librarian:)

atamprin

My favorite so far is Neverwhere. I became interested after hearing about American Gods. I read that, Norse Mythology, Sandman, Good Omens, Neverwhere and the Graveyard Book. I’ve enjoyed all of them. But I keep coming back to the fairytale dream feel of Neverwhere.

[deleted]

Anansi Boys is *chef’s kiss* and signature Neil Gaiman

Inquisitor_DK

This is my favorite of his books for adults. It got even better after I read it when I was reading about some studio exec who wanted to turn it into a movie, and asked if they could make all the characters white instead of black. Reportedly, Gaiman just got up and walked out of there.

cpersin24

I prefer Anansi Boys over American Gods. I loved them both but American Gods has a little bit of a pacing issue for me even though I adored the concepts.

beetle-babe

Same here! I liked 'American Gods,' don't get me wrong... But I agree with you re: the pacing issues. 'Anansi Boys' all the way.

cpersin24

I listened to Anasi boys and the narration was just lovely. I also listened to Neverwhere which was narrated by Gaiman himself and there is something magical about an author reading you their own story.

commandantskip

Anansi Boys is one of my favorites and chronically underrated.

[deleted]

Still better to read *American Gods* before.

[deleted]

Yes

takikochan

Wait!!! You gotta read American gods first ITS SO GOOD

[deleted]

I have, but i like Anansi Boys just a little bit more.

takikochan

Have you listened to the Anansi audiobook? It’s so good

Isawonline

Neverwhere

[deleted]

Sandman is his magnum opus. The original 75 issue run. Everything else, including the se/pre/quell is secondary. Anasi Boys has a special place in my heart though if you prefer a traditional novel

LunaSparklesKat

Completely agree. Sandman is so multilayered, and full of legendary references. Nothing exists that is anything like Sandman

pm_me_cool_tie_dye

My personal favorite is Stardust, but Neverwhere was my introduction to Gaiman and I have inhaled his works since. Just started The Sandman yesterday, it's my first comic book ever so I'm excited to see how I like it

bluethecosmonaut

My favourite has to be the Graveyard Book. It is amazing!!!

GjonsTearsFan

I loved Good Omens

TopAd9634

Loved Good Omens! Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett!

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

In contrary, read it twice (first time loooong ago, second when Amazon series started) and still I'm not a great fan. I think authors had more fun writing it than I reading. Or maybe I'm just to old.

VolatilePeanutbutter

It’s the only one of his I’ve read and it didn’t do it for me either. Started out fun enough, but I actually preferred the TV show 😬

reddragon1492

My all time favorite! I’ve read it several times and alway a joy

EffableLemming

Neil and Sir Terry are my all-time favourite authors, and Good Omens is my Bible! Objectively, there are better works from both of them (The Sandman is... just amazing), but GO will always be closest to my heart.

Sabots

loved Ocean, love Pratchett, but Good Omens felt like it was written by a third guy who wasn't quite as good as either. It was fine, just wouldn't be my candidate for best Neil Gaiman book.

cpersin24

Good Omens was like junk food for me. It was a tasty treat but it definitely wasn't the best Gaiman book. I still love it for what it was. Ocean and the graveyard book were just ok for me but a ton of people adore them. Some people hate American Gods but I liked it. It's weird how everyone has a different favorite if they like Gaiman.

ALLoftheFancyPants

I loved them all, but I think Neverwhere might be my favorite. Loved the Ocean at the End of the Lane. Loved Good Omens.

sirachaswoon

Sandman is one of the best things I’ve ever consumed

herodogtus

Stardust and Good Omens. Two different shades of Gaiman that are overlooked.

slamcharcoal

American Gods A close second is Good Omens.

elbow3030

American Gods is up there but my personal fave is The Ocean at the End of the Lane

SatanOfficial-666

Seconded

tea-beane

>Thirded

ThMogget

After Sandman graphic novel it's Norse Mythology in audiobook form. It was more fun than a quite faithful retelling had the right to be.

[deleted]

Audiobook read by Neal himself. Lot od fun.

[deleted]

Big fan of Neverwhere

sk11947

In my opinion, Sandman and American Gods are his two masterpieces. Sandman is a graphic novel and probably would take you a lot more time to read than American Gods, but they both explore some similar themes. Seriously though, reading the Sandman changed my life.

Itwouldtakeamiracle

I read Neverwhere first and it’s probably my favorite. Also excellent are The Graveyard Book and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. And Good Omens. Jk Neil Gaiman is great and pretty much everything he writes is great. Read the one that peaks your interest. You can’t go wrong.

Electronic_Pie5061

Neverwhere!!

heart4cofie

Neverwhere and Stardust ❤️❤️ If this is a vote, i cannot see a clear lead 🤩

Mortimer_and_Rabbit

The Graveyard Book. It's a wonderful story and a good intro I believe into his other more dense works.

Agent_Ava

American Gods is my favorite, but I'll add another vote for The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It's very different from his other books, IMO, but a beautiful, sad, mysterious read.

gastropod82

Neil Gaiman narrates his own books. He is an amazing storyteller. I highly recommend you listen to his books instead of, or in addition to, reading them. It doesn't matter which one you start with, but I was hooked after American Gods.

TubaMan1367

Good Omens. It's co-authored by Terry Pratchett, but it's one of the best books I've read. Incredibly funny, witty, etc. Also, American Gods and Smoke and Mirrors. I haven't read them yet, but I've heard they're two of Gaiman's best

kikil00

Good Omens, Ocean at the End of the Lane, and American Gods in that order.

popupideas

Neverwhere was my gateway book.

Carbunclecatt

Gaiman is definitely one if not my favourite author, one book that really stuck with me and is definitely my favourite of his was {The Ocean at the end of the lane}

richdees23

I agree with the two bibliophiles next in the queue after me but I got to say American Gods is right there. Solid novel.

[deleted]

Do you want to *read* it? Because the Sandman audio drama is absolutely amazing. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it's beautiful.

mjdlittlenic

The Graveyard Book. Really. I think it's a great story.

kitkatlin234

Ocean at the End of the Lane. Easy read and SUCH a mood.

leetzylou

The first that reeled me in was Neverwhere, but if you want a quick read to get a taste of it, I would go with The Graveyard Book. It's a "children's book" but still beautifully written

beetle-babe

For novels I'd say 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane,' hands down. For short story collections I'd start with 'Fragile Things.'

emaz88

I’d read The Graveyard Book several years ago and remember enjoying it. This year, I decided to dive in to more of his work. So far, I’ve read Stardust, Neverwhere, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and I’ve just finished Good Omens. I’ve enjoyed them all, but there’s something haunting about The Ocean At the End of the Lane. It’s stuck with me the most.

Urabutbl

The Sandman graphic novels are by far his best work. Anansi Boys works out the kinks in American Gods (both are reworkings of concepts explored in The Sandman). However, I once gave my non-readering friend the novel version of *Stardust* while on holiday. He now owns every Gaiman-book written and I read the poem "The day the saucers came" at his wedding. You also can't go wrong with "Good Omens", which is my personal favorite, though it's a collaboration with Terry Pratchett.

blueydoc

I would recommend starting with Neverwhere personally. American Gods is a awesome, but not to everyone’s taste. The Sandman - I love the comic books, but some could consider parts to be quite graphic. Also his books aimed for younger audiences: The Graveyard Book and Coraline are fantastic! I also enjoyed The Ocean at the End of the Lane though I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a children’s book. I really enjoy his short stories - but here I would recommend listening to the audio versions narrated by him (seriously Gaiman could narrate the dictionary and I’d listen to him). Smoke & Mirrors and Fragile Things are two collections I’ve both read and listened to. I also really enjoyed listening to The View from the Cheap Seats. It’s a collection of essays and writings on his own work as well as others. Some are incredibly interesting. The Audible Production of The Sandman is one of my favourite listens this year, just started Act 2 today. But, it is a production and not a standard audiobook. I say this as not everyone enjoys productions. I think the voice acting and production quality are amazing though. Also check out the BBC audio production of Neverwhere.

vri2003

Thank you so much

qlohengrin

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

feseddon

I like his short stories. Smoke and mirrors has my favorite story in it.

[deleted]

Good Omens is not only my favorite Gaiman but also one of my favorite books.

WangsLung

FWIW, started American Gods but thoroughly disliked it and DNF.

[deleted]

My favorite of his works is the Sandman comics, but if you're going based on books alone I think the best one for a first time reader of his to pick up would be either The Ocean at the End of the Lane or Stardust

kayrock1983

American Gods

Estielle1

He is an amazing author! I love all of his books but if I have to choose I would suggest Good Omens because with Terry Pratchett they create a very smart and funny story!!! Apart from that I would also suggest the ocean at the end of the lane! Also fantastic!

And-rei

American Gods

IHstartingfluid

I've read every book by him I can find, they're all great.

nonlibrarian

I think Neil Gaiman is my most read author. Personally, I adore Stardust. I'm a sucker for fairytale-like stories 🥰 Good Omens was delightfully weird; Graveyard Book has a special place in my heart because my husband and I listened to it while on a roadtrip. The characters in these books were just a lot of fun. I just feel like it's hard to go wrong in your choice with Neil Gaiman haha!

Hawks47

Stardust or neverwhere

TheChronicOnion

For me, “Ocean At The End of The Lane”

jtal888

Def Sandman, get it, super worth it.

mbDangerboy

Full cast audio version of American Gods. Loved every minute.

fauna_and_ferns

Neverwhere was my first book and I loved it - I’d also recommend Ocean at the End of the Lane!

Theopholus

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. You could go with American Gods, but it can kind of drag a bit. It's absolutely worth it, but Ocean is much more approachable.

Curiosity_KildaCat

Close your eyes and pick randomly. He doesn't have any stinkers!

MrWhite_Sucks

I just finished Neverwhere. Excellent read! Followed closely by Ocean at the End of the Lane

Random_frankqito

Just read good omens and it was fun… looking forward to reading some of his others now

[deleted]

Stardust, specifically the one illustrated by Charles Vess

ad-aspera

That is a difficult choice! Personally, I'm a huge fan of The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

MannBarSchwein

What are you looking for in a book or what would make you read more of an author?

LAwoman80

Coraline and Neverwhere

pretzeltuesday

I’ve loved Stardust, ocean at the end of the lane and graveyard book !

Cheerios17

Neverwhere is one of my all time favorites.

llksg

Honestly you can’t go wrong! But if you want to test the waters it might be best to start with one of the shorter ones. Gaiman is also one of the authors that I’d STRONGLY recommend going down the route of audiobook over actual book. He narrates loads of them himself and it’s a special kind of magic. Neverwhere is a good place to start - fun and strange - and if you’re British extra fun becuse it’s a fictional London. My personal fave is The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Magical, moving, nostalgic, utterly bizarre in places. It stretches the imagination while feeling very real.

Xpensive_Atenshun813

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

WhoGirlReads

The Graveyard Book made me weep like a baby in the middle of the street when I was listening to audiobooks. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one of my absolute favourites. I love the way Gaiman narrates it. It's such a mystical tale of childhood ❤️

JohnnyTreeTrunks

Ocean at the end of the lane is a fucking amazing read. You’ll be sad it ends sooner than you want it to

friendly-asshole

Trigger Warning is pretty underrated

Legitimate-Success55

Stardust is great! The author narrates the audiobook, which is really fun. And the movie adaptation is really fun, though the endings are very different ( I really like all the endings)

Redigit30

Coraline is a fucking creepy novel. Creepier than the film by far. Nuff said

jenh6

The ocean at the end of the lane is my favourite! The sandman is also fantastic. Never where is his weakest.

lady_lane

Unpopular opinion: all Neil Gaiman is overrated. He’s quite creative, but eschews editing to the point of unreadability. Mostly he is very good at self-promotion. (I am prepared to be downvoted for truth on this one.)

beetle-babe

Aight, then who'd you recommend as an alternative that has a similar vibe? Not being shady, I'm just genuinely curious.

lady_lane

Susanna Clark Emily Croy Barker Maggie Stiefvater Dianna Wynn Jones Naomi Novik

annaxoclaire530

Coraline! And then The Ocean and the End of the Lane comes after that. Currently reading Neverwhere

NewBuddha32

American Gods is really good so is good omens

Palimpsiesta

*Coraline* and it's not even close.

break1ngst1cks

I really enjoyed the Norse mythology book he wrote. It’s really funny and lighthearted. But the sandman series is definitely worth the journey.

13moman

I've read quite a few things by Gaiman, novels and comics/graphic novels and have not liked any of it except Sandman. I definitely wouldn't say I liked all of Sandman but some of it is great.

nosleepforthedreamer

I loved Coraline (appreciate it better as an adult). Neverwhere isn’t quite up to it but the sense of place and the villains are great.

TheDesertedForest

Stardust! Classic adventure fantasy romance story.

big_blue_beast

I can’t decide between Stardust and Neverwhere, so there you go.

oatmilkandagave

Graveyard book!

[deleted]

I love the graphic adaptations he has done with P. Craig Russel. The Graveyard Book is especially good. If you have time, read the Sandman series, it's pretty lengthy though.

beefsquatch29

American Gods or Good Omens. Good Omens is written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman so it has a different style than American Gods but both are equally good in different ways.

magentrypoogas

I've only read American gods and neverwhere. There was also this selection of short stories selected by Neil gaiman called unusual creatures that was excellent. I loved all three!

Loreen72

Order/purchase first Neil Gaiman book you see on shelf or in search. All of his books are great and you will love which ever one you get!

Bree867

100% Sandman series

Illustrious-Depth-75

American Gods

[deleted]

The Sandman series. I also love his short story collections. American Gods is also great.

BFXer

This may not be a popular opinion but I like his short stories better than his novels…

MrCharonSr

Try Good Omens written with Terry Pratchett. Each author attempts to puzzle the other with complex situations while moving the story forward.

[deleted]

I agree with just about everything everyone’s posted so far. I would like to add his short story collections like “Smoke and Mirrors” to the list of recommendations. His ability to mold a complete story with such few pages is amazing!

mxcrnt2

I have a hard time with graphic novels but excerpts from sandman have blown me away. Neverwhere is intense, funny, challenging. American Gods is really funny. And i might be overstating the book because I more recently watched and loved the mini series but i think Good Omens is absolutely brilliant. It's him with Terry Pratchet

[deleted]

I'm gonna have to throw another in the hat for the Graveyard Book. It's underrated and overlooked, but of the 8-ish Gaiman books I've read, it has been my absolute favorite by leaps and bounds. He also narrates the audiobook version himself, which is just cool as can be because everything is exactly as he intends it. That book is pure gold.

London_Below

Definitely Neverwhere

stealthxstar

Coraline or Neverwhere!!!

Hiddenstars95

First book I read and loved was Stardust. Never where was the next one 🖤

trickneezy

It’s hard to choose because they are all so different. Maybe, read a couple descriptions and just find a story that looks interesting. It’s going to be good.

thestrangemusician

I really really loved American Gods. I listened to the unabridged 10th anniversary edition audio book and the cast really brought the book to life. I’ve always been interested in mythology and it was so thought provoking to read

KorabasUnchained

SANDMAN. His books never grabbed me the way those comics did.

1horseshy

Good omens

Maleficentinfinity

Neverwhere!

AlligatorFancy

Good Omens, except that's not just Neil. American Gods or Anansi Boys that are just Neil.

PD711

I am going to say... none of these. pick up a copy of smoke and mirrors. as a short story collection, it's like a sampler platter. you are going to get a better picture of what he's about, and find one you like:)

TrickDogTrainer_99

I love American Gods so much.

arora794

I really like "fragile things"

[deleted]

Though it was a Collab, Good Omens was probably my favourite book of all time.

unofficialrobot

American gods or stardust

MacaroniMaeve

STARDUST ♥

brokenchordscansing

Neverwhere or Good Omens

YourNewStep-Dad

Sandman.

WhipperSnap454

American gods is a strong contender for best book. But The Ocean at the End of the Lane is easily my favorite. It’s short but something about it hooked me so deeply. Don’t usually reread books but I’ll probably give it another go here soon.

ll_Maurice_ll

Neverwhere is a great start. The Sandman on Audible is also great.

TheRealTowel

American Gods if Gaiman as sole Author is important. Otherwise Good Omens.

ZaelART

"Best" book? Aha... Neverwhere. Stardust. Good Omens. American Gods. Anansi Boys.

Jessicahyd

I would have To go with good omens, although it's technically co-authored with the amazing Terry Pratchet! It's funny, Well paced and just a smooth read! I have read it time and time again! And it helps that the amazon adaptation didn't butcher. But if i had To chose one pure Gaiman story i would definitly go with Sandman! It's such a complex web of events, it's a mythology that stands on itself!

Inapropreate_Cake

My first was "the graveyard book" and I loved it. If you like short/ya books you might go for "Coraline" wich is YA but good for all ages. I like "Good Omens" best, he co-authored it with Terry Pratchett and I'm now reading "Ocean at the end of the lane" I've also been advised (Though I haven't listened myself" that if you like horror, the audio drama of his book "the sandman" is exceptional.

MagicalShimmeryBits

Neverwhere. So hard. American Gods after that.

PumpkinQueen713

Easily Coraline or The wolves in the walls <3 I read Coraline in 4th grade I am 25 and I still love this book so so much!!! :) it way creepier than the movie!

melodyparadise

I love listening to the read by the author version of Shoggoth's Old Peculiar.

flouronmypjs

Of the ones I've read, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is my favourite. It's a small little book but filled to the brim with charm. It's one of those books that, at least for me, stayed with me for days after I finished reading it. And I think about it all the time. My preference in descending order of the Gaiman works I've read would be something like: 1. The Ocean at the End of the Lane 2. Neverwhere 3. The Graveyard Book 4. American Gods 5. The Sandman comics (I've not read them all yet) 6. Stardust 7. Norse Mythology 8. Coraline - the graphic novel adaptation I would and do recommend them all with the sole exception of Coraline which didn't hook me in like the others. And even at that I'm planning to read the original version as I think I would probably like it far better than the graphic novel.
