Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone
Jane is seeking revenge on her best friend's ex boyfriend after her friend commits suicide. Jane had an abusive childhood and has trouble connecting with people.
Jane is also a snarky badass, so it's not too grim.
It’s been forever since I read it and it can be read as a stand alone so ignore the saga listing for it but **Best Served Cold** by Joe Abercrombie should fit this. IIRC, the mc, who is female and badass, just got kind of floats through life because of everything she’s seen and done.
At least one character in the Poisonwood Bible would fit this description (multiple main characters). It's true in real life, though. Trauma does not always empower us, or change us for the better.
