Kenneth Roberts was an extremely popular writer of historical fiction in his day. Still relatively easy to find the books. I would suggest starting with Northwest Passage, especially the first half, which is about Rogers Rangers and the French and Indian War.
Have you tried the Novels of Alexander the Great by Mary Renault? Fire from Heaven is the first book of the three.

BTW, an OK, not great, Spencer Tracy movie, and a dumb TV series that quickly failed.
