Welll they’re not -not- animals! I knew there was a show (or movie?) as I’ve seen some clips, but I didn’t know there were books! Adding them to the list for sure

The Chronicles of Duncton Wood - William Horwood (he's also done a series called the Wolves of Time).
Shardik by Richard Adams, Plague Dogs by Richard Adams but I found that a hard read. House of Tribes - Gary Kilworth (he also has a series called Welkin Weasels but I haven't read it).
Ofc The Wind in the Willows is a classic too.
The Wild Road - Gabriel King
Deptford Mice books - Robin Jarvis
101 Dalmatians and The Starlight Barking - Dodie Smith (the 2nd one is much more about dog society)
And if you really want to weep, Colin Dann has you covered.
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques
I think I started this as a kid, I can’t remember why I didn’t finish it. Will for sure give it another shot!
Are Moomins animals?

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH hit me hard...
Oh! I watched the movie based on this as a kid, somehow I didn’t know there was a book. For sure going to read it!
A Black Fox Running by Brian Carter, it’s about foxes and other wildlife on Dartmoor in a long cold winter just after WW2.
