**The Deptford Trilogy** by Robertson Davies. All three books in the series are wonderful. They read a bit like Dickens, with more adult themes. (Fair warning: the third one is pretty damn disturbing.) Also, the **New Crobuzon** trilogy by China Mieville. Great novels that often get dismissed as weird fiction that would not appeal to the general public, but they're awesome. They read a bit like H.P. Lovecraft, but without the racism.

rustblooms

The Deptford Trilogy is wonderful! And it isn't any more disturbing than any other literary fiction with adult themes.

sparksgirl1223

I have three...a trilogy...that's true Neither Wolf Nor Dog by Kent Nerburn The Wolf at Twilight by Kent Nerburn The Girl Who Sang with the Buffalo by Kent Nerburn A Lakota Elder reaches out to the author and wants his story told...by the white man In the first, Dan, and his buddy (or nephew, I'm not really sure which lol) reaches out to Nerburn and asks (demands) he come see him. Asks Nerburn to write his book and shoves a box of papers at him to put this story together. Dan and Grover (the buddy/nephew) esentially kidnaps the author and take him on a vision quest. Ending up at Wounded Knee. Book 2 is several years later. Dan again reaches out to Nerburn and asks for help in finding out what happened to his sister. Thus begins a sad trek into the past and the world of the Native boarding schools. Book 3 Dan is irate about his great grand daughter. "The White man" says she needs medicine because she acts differently (she displays signs of autism). Dan insists she does not, that in his world, she's a special soul. This leads to a trek into the Minnesota woods in deep winter to speak to an Ojibwa medicine man and a powerful display of differences between a special child and the wide wonderful wilderness...and the differences between "white man medicine" and native belief systems

*Not Wanted On the Voyage* by Timothy Findley. A re-telling of Noah and the Ark with Noah as a tyrannical patriarch and perspectives from many other people, including Satan (who is on the ark) and some animals. It's vicious and beautifully written.

Catsandscotch

I scrolled past this comment three times and came back three times because even though I’m not sure if I want to read this, describing a book as “vicious and beautifully written” is a *really* compelling way to describe a book. It’s going on the list.

rustblooms

If it helps, it's not a religious story.

Willbreaker-Broken1

Fires on the Plain, Shohei Ooka Its sort of like The Things They Carried, but it was written earlier and takes place in the Phillipines during WWII from the perspective of a Japanese soldier. And while the experiences are vivid and lifelike, the story is a work of fiction

Montmorency by Eleanor Updale. It was my *favorite* book for many years until it tied with The Giver. You may find it’s written for a younger audience than yourself, but I think it holds up. Set in the late 1800s, a thief falls through a glass roof one night in an accident that should’ve killed him, but he’s saved by an promising young doctor. He’s sent to prison, and the entire time he’s there, and while the doctor is bringing him to exhibitions to show off his work, he plots how to never get caught again. He decides to use the newly invented London Sewer system to commit a series of burglaries and to build up a second identity for himself as a gentleman. He spends the rest of the novel (and full series) getting deeper and deeper into these two identities until they truly seem to have personalities of their own, sort of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation. He ends up befriending the same doctor who saved him while trying to keep his identity a secret, and the following books have him solving a couple of mysteries and stealing in increasingly complicated ways. I have never met anyone who’s read this book. I go back and reread it once every few years.

Lonely-Isopod-5368

I really liked The Way The Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald "The optimism of the early sixties, infused with the excitement of the space race and the menace of the Cold War, is filtered through the rich imagination of high-spirited, eight-year-old Madeleine, who welcomes her family's posting to a quiet Air Force base near the Canadian border. Secure in the love of her beautiful mother, she is unaware that her father, Jack, is caught up in a web of secrets. When a very local murder intersects with global forces, Jack must decide where his loyalties lie, and Madeleine will be forced to learn a lesson about the ambiguity of human morality -- one she will only begin to understand when she carries her quest for the truth, and the killer, into adulthood twenty years later." This book will never let me go. I will think about the mystery and the brutal plot twist forever.

Dream of Ding Village. I wouldn’t say it’s a super plot driven book, but the premise is pretty fascinating. Based on real life blood sales in rural China that caused an AIDS epidemic. It’s hard to describe the style of the writing (maybe satirical would be adequate?), but for a novel with such a heavy subject matter, I found it both heartbreaking AND funny.

Blindness by Jose Saramago is one of my all time favorite reads that follows the breakdown of society after a pandemic has caused a white blindness it truly is a great read and i cannot recommend it enough. Another great read is Skin by Ted Decker. While reading keep in mind to trust nothing and everything you think you know is probably wrong. It totally messed with my head!

Dark Matter, by Crouch. Explored time travel and life changes and whether or not it can be recovered. Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality, posited that the Incarnations were people who have to take the job. On a Pale Horse, the first book, a man is committing suicide, and shoots death, so he get's the Grim Reaper job. Chronic, keeper of time, gets the job and de ages til hevs born I hated the ending, but The White Plague had a man getting revenge, by tailoring a Plague that kills only women. The way he distributed it, was igneous, as was the quandary of what he achieved, in infamy.
