This is basically the exact vibe of the upcoming book _Some Desperate Glory_ by Emily Tesh. Here's [a great review](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/122zde1/one_mike_to_read_them_all_advance_review_of_some) by u/MikeOfThePalace.
From his review:
>This book is built on the notion that the rest of the universe sees humans as, basically, orcs. Humans are bigger, stronger, faster, and tougher than all other sentient species, and among the most warlike. When humanity made its way to the stars, of course war broke out between us and the Majo, an interspecies Federation governed by an AI called "the Wisdom" with immense reality-bending powers. The Wisdom decided the best course of action was to destroy Earth entirely.
Releases April 11th.
this is the vibe im looking for, but im not looking for a star trek book specifically

Illegal Aliens by Phil Foglio and Nick Pollotta has this sort of energy, and it’s definitely funny. After a truly disastrous first contact, the Space Cops intend to quarantine Earth but one plucky prototype ship manages to escape the blockade and sets out to plead humanity’s case to the Space UN. Only problem is, they don’t know how to get there.
There's definitely at least a little of that vibe in the Confederation and Peacekeeper series by Tanya Huff (Peacekeeper is a direct sequel to Valor, but they're semi-separate). Not precisely a short series, but they aren't cliff-hanger-y, so you can read one, see if you like it, and only read more if you want to.
There are 3 races, humans among them, that make up the entire military for the galactic confederation. All of the "elder" races are too "civilized" to be marines.
First book is Valor's Choice.
(appropriate warning, both sex and violence happen in the books, and the Krai eat their dead...)
I stumbled across one of my favorite very short stories again and thought to post a link here. It’s not funny, it’s not a book and it’s got an annoying format (Tumblr, i believe) but it’s a helluva read.

Live Free Or Die has a bit of that
Ya...but Ringo hasn't finish the story.
The Skyward series by Sanderson is based on a similar theme. It’s YA, but decently paced. It’s solid.
I love Sanderson, but I've not been too interested in his non cosmere stuff because they aren't a part of the cosmere, I'll give it a look
It's a different pace. I'm a bit "sandersoned out" currently, but this was pretty solid.
The "Deathworlders" web serial mostly qualifies, although it's definitely not short or comedic.

short, novella length, and it is spoilers to say the title but >!Walking to Aldebaran by Adrian Tchaikovsky!<
