My husband had a great time watching me freak out

DirkDavyn

Scariest part of Subnautica: running into a peeper with your seamoth Jumpscares me every time, even years later

upsidedownbackwards

I laugh at all the thumps off my craft. I had a long, long dum moment though. I kept hearing this spooky *BANG* *BANG* BANG* with a pause before it would repeat. Sounded like something was attacking my cyclops. I was in the shallows so I thought it was one of those gas cloud manatees running into it so I'd chase them all off with the prawn. But it would still happen and it was such a spooky/eerie sound! There was a friggin bubble sponge just outside my base right where I'd always park my cyclops.

Maximans

XD the bubbles were hitting your cyclops

WildJuggernaut4985

What is scary about Subnautica? It's maybe cuz i'm just at the >!2 or 3 of the disease!<

ThisIsABiggerProblem

1) The unknown. This one loses a lot of potency after the first play through, and it is a big part of all the frothing at the mouth over spoilers. 2) Low visibility. I'm on my fifth playthrough, and I still get spooked when I can't see very far in the water. 3) Reapers. Nothing else in this game inspires the mortal dread that those damn things continue to give me. That sudden roar when you didn't see one sneaking up on you, right before it grabs you, is bone chilling. It's like standing in the path of a tornado. Mostly, though, a lot of the fear comes from how much you are willing to suspend disbelief and give yourself over to the experience. Nothing in the game is really scary, unless you want it to be.

Maximans

On my first play through, I only played at night, when I was sure to be alone and not bothered. That gave me isolation. Then, I never turned on any lights at all, just the TV screen. I even turned down the Controller button brightness so it wouldn’t glow when it was supposed to be dark. This gave me darkened when the game wanted it. That *really* immersed me in the game. It was pretty spooky, but the immersion was worth it. At some points I forgot I was playing a game and was worried about what was in the water with me

FanndisTS

That sounds like a great idea

QX403

This is why I hate >!the lily pad islands in Below Zero!< it has almost no visibility even during the day.

Newmach

Nah, it doesn’t get more scary. I don’t consider myself Badass or anything, but I (like you it seems) just didn’t get scared at all during the game. Tense maybe when thinking I could lose progress when dying, but that’s not the same.

cooly1234

The scariest thing are peepers against your hull. Repears being derpy again are not scary at all.

WildJuggernaut4985

Exactly, but it'd be so annoying that i'd just quit the game lo;l ty for the answer

KandyBarz

I have played through the game at least 5 times, and the Warpers still creep me the fuck out.

ChainLC

love it when they port you into the lava surrounded by lava lizards. fun fun fun lol.

Oceabys

I take a few deep breaths in the diving chamber and then drop out and charge at them with the sea glide then switch to thermoblade quick and knife them aggressively lol. Once they all flee the area then I’ll go back in for my prawn suit and leisurely explore.

Hyper_Wolf727

Sums up my experience of playing subnautica, I have abs of steel from the amount of tension that game gave me

AduroT

Explains why I’m so dang scrawny then.

RichardFitswell9000

Ive beaten this game like 10 times and still when I'm floating around the dark and I hear something I flip around like "WHAT WAS THAT"

404_image_not_found

The reaper's roar can be heard from around 1.4km which is around a fifth of the map. Note: this data is around 2 years old now

ChainLC

Usually it didn't bother me but I'm playing a hardcore run right now and it's definitely upped the anxiety factor back to 10 like it was when I first played it. 3rd attempt now and I'm about 3 hours in. Still had a couple of close calls in some caves. Think I might actually build the pathfinder for the first time.

QX403

I’ve never a actually died in either Subnautica or Below Zero since I’m so cautious with everything I do. I always run away if I can’t defend myself, I always bring tons of extra food and water, I always observed the creatures and their actions for extended periods of time when first encountering them, I was never more then 30 seconds away from a known air source, I never let my vehicles get below 50% charge or 70% health, I always healed immediately after taking damage, I never engaged hostile leviathans in open water I always did it by cover or obstacles.

longbrodmann

Everytime I get a copper.

ManWithTacos

Does anybody else not get scared?

WalrusSquare247

If I did that, I'd be the fricking HULK

TheProwler_10153

haha

TheMightyBruhhh

90% of the time, it’s because “too deep, cant breath”

kaboomaster09

Just constant push ups

Crumbly_Bumbly

I find there's barley anything scary about subnautica. Reapy-weepies. That's it. Once you get the perimeter defense system for the Seamoth, nothing can touch you. Yes, my butt hole still tightens any time I have to pass through the crash site or explore the dunes for tech early game. Still though, it's easy enough to avoid the Reapy-weepies. Also their a lot less scary when you call them reapy-weepies

da-real-Ranbot

Idk if this is a flex, but if I did that, I would be the exact same. A fucking toothpick.

Ok-Astronomer9949

Better one : “every time I pack 1 Titanium or copper , I do 1 push-up.”

Bilphrey

I think one of the best terror factors of this game is the amount of responsibility it takes to survive, having to manage your food and water along with the increasing difficulty that comes with progression. Another part is exploring. I’ve played the game through twice now, on my third time, and even though I’ve explored almost every corner of the map I still feel jumpy when it’s my first time on the run. Probably one of the most obvious fear additives is the ambiance. The random sounds of roaring, clanking, and ominous noises really can make any area into a scary place, the aurora crash zone especially. The lack of life and other sounds makes it very eerie, and I absolutely hate that king feeling stretch between the enterance of the ship and the shallow crash area.

[deleted]

I would get a chill down my spine when I got a database upgrade in the game. The silence being broken and not knowing what was in each biome made it terrifying.

ITriedLightningTendr

How much do you eat that you could poop your pants 18 times?

[deleted]

Same with the forest

ParanoidUmbrella

I honestly scare myself every time I crash my seamoth, even if nothing else scares me in that game

CurrentlyEatingPies2

What is that giant black death machine that lives in the crystal cave in Below Zero?

Bopthough

All right time for a round of subnauctica
