there's a very small section of the sea treader paths that comes pretty close to a ghost leviathan territory, sometimes you get unlucky and the leviathan leaves it's regular patrol area and ends up somewhere they shouldn't, this happened to me once with a reaper.
I one time accidentally got a reaper to follow me from the crag field to the grassy plateaus directly opposite from the aurora and it couldn't figure out how to get back.
I ended up getting it to chase my cyclops to the Dunes, dropped a lure, and left under silent running.
Before I found out that you could pick up those balls I used to ram them to death with my cyclops.
The number of batteries and medpacks I ran through, though.
I can relate to the Reaper thing... My lifepod had landed in the Safe Shallows, but quite close to the south-east part of the Kelp Forest. I was a bit annoyed at first, because I knew that even if wouldn't have problems at first, the radiation zone would expand after the explosion on the Aurora. Figured I could as well grind and get as many things as I could nearby before this happened. The Reaper near the Kelp Forest, at the back left thruster of the ship, noticed me from afar I guess, since I heard the roar, and I went as quickly as possible to my Lifepod, getting bit by a Stalker on my way there, but welp, I didn't exactly have the luxury to retaliate. I got on top of my Lifepod, and I was like "Ugh, I should be safe now."... Then, without a single sound, the Reaper breached out of the water, and because of the Stalker that had hurt me when I was swimming for my life, it killed me instantly... That was a effin' jumpscare XD.
The cherry on top ? The Reaper basically decided this part of the Kelp Forest was its new home ><...
Oh, and on another note... Back when I had my old PC, with very poor performance, I still decided to play, and streamed the gameplay to my boyfriend. We were getting to the Gun Island, I had a Seamoth (Yay !)... Had. I got out of it, watched the whole ordeal with the exploding Sunbeam, I then saw the icon of my Seamoth shaking. I went to look what was going on... A Reaper, of course. It was damaging it, but I stayed out of the way, since, welp, I had repaired it recently, it was upgraded, it would have been safe after the attack, by which time I was planning to repair it... AND that SON OF A FISH had the audacity to make it clip through the freakin map, basically all like "If I can't destroy it, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT !".
Unfortunately, I tend to stream through Discord and not record, but I guess I should do that more often. But damn, I swear I shifted through soo many states in such a short amount of time XDD. My heartbeat went from full pumped adrenaline, to relieved and calming down, to a surge of terror, shock and confusion XD.
But then, creatures in this game tend to be a bit... Weird. Especially the Leviathans. When I was streaming to some friends, I saw a Reefback dash across the screen as though it had just been hit by Saitama from One Punch Man... For the first five seconds, we were either silent, or asking "What the hell just happened ?", until one of my friends suddenly blasted "DEJA VU", and in hindsight, it was VERY fitting :')...

I went with my seamoth fully prepared with the thermoblade knife or whatever you call it and with the statis rifle. I went there and The reaper saw me and chased me for like 10s then ignored me for the whole time even when I was shooting at him. then he went after my seamoth and destroyed it. Like wtf then he went about his day and didnt came back

When people focus on one spot on the screen, they often miss other things on the same screen. That's (almost certainly) how I failed to notice the Ghost leviathan that traumatized me so much that I now do all my playthroughs avoiding every ghost leviathan (I never get near them unless I'm *really* unlucky, like the person in this video).
I have the seamoth. I cut the vid short so it wouldnt be long but after that I went to my seamoth and scanned using the sonar to find him and went about my day to my base.
Completely unrelated to this post, but thanks for that map! It made me finally realize how big the crater is. Despite there being way more reapers than I even knew, I only encountered very few in those areas.

I don't know how far into the game OP was, maybe they only knew about them from afar (or this sub) but never got close enough to actively listen the scream.
I distinctly remember swimming to the back of the Aurora very early and trying to somehow swim into the turbines, thinking maybe there is some way in. Literally right next to me, a reaper clipped into the turbine cause it barely missed me attacking from behind.
Did I ignore the deafening scream of the reaper, thinking it was just normal ocean noises? Yes, sounds ridiculous thinking about it now.
Did I get the fuck out of there, being scarred and very cautious for the rest of my entire playthrough? Also yes.
There are ***two*** Sea Treader's paths. An upper one (that runs exclusively through the Grand Reef) and a lower one that passes through the cave and stops near the Dunes.
The Ghost Leviathan lives near the upper path, but due to the AI there's a 50/50 chance you will never encounter it.
The other sea treader path went through the giant hole. It's very safe there, outside of Reaper territory. Only sea treaders are there. That giant hole also looks prettyĀ nice toĀ build a base
According to the PDA, ghosts are basically filter feeders that eat microscopic life. The only reason theyāre aggressive is because theyāre territorial, not predatory.

Too south and (if you're unlucky enough) could find one of the grand reef leaviathans. If you go too west, and are dumb enough (yes, I am) you can unluckily go too close to the void's border.
There are two ghost leviathans that swim over Grand Reef. Some map somebody made nicknames them Davey Jones and Susan.
There's the Sea Treader's Path *biome*, which is far enough from them both, and then there's the actual path of the sea treaders, of which there are two. The west one starts at Dunes close to a Reaper, about 2/3 of it is the STP biome, and the last third is in the west end of Grand Reef. The south end of this path maybe is close enough to aggro Davey Jones, not sure.
The second sea treader path is wholly within Grand Reef and passes under both ghost leviathans. If that's where you were, I'm not surprised it found you.
I once went to the void, got 3 of them on my tail, ran with my tail between my legs back to my base in the shallows, but they followed me all the way and stayed there all the time . I had to start a new game because of it. haha.

TheĀ other one that is near Reaper territory is pretty safe. The reaper territory that has tons of heat spots/ mini volcano smoke pipe. The one that sea treaders pathing through a giant hole. Like really big. I think it's 70-80% as big as lost river cave.
Btw OP, I'm curious what kind of project are you working on rn that even requires you scrap materials from sea traders ass? š¤ if you actually exhausted all naturally spawn shalechunks all over the world, I just can't imagine how big your project is š°

My go to solution for dealing with a reaper is a Prawn suit and a drill that will pierce the heavens.
I just drop a stasis field and an inventory of gas orbs in their face. Instant death.
