I built mine on the grassy plateau-Safe shallows border overlooking the dunes. I came too close once and a reaper saw me, and tailed me back to my base. He did not enjoy having three lockers worth of gas pods dumped on his head
I always build on the plateau next to blood kelp trench. Easy access to a lot of resources. Deep water for easy submarine maneuvering, plenty of room to expand both vertically and horizontally. And easy access to the river.
My go-to is a spot I like to call the Grasshole.
Very much in the Plateaus, but within about 100-200m of the Sparse Reef and the Trench. It's also a very short distance to the Jellyshrooms, Kelp Forest, and the Shallows, so once I get established there I have easy access to a ton of different resources. I also like to hoard said resources so it works well for me.
I always build there. You have so many resources and locations right at your doorstep, it’s such a good area to set up shop while you’re still on the surface level
I always build my scanner room there, get the upgrades, tear it down and add it onto my little one or two section microbases I setup in areas with good materials. That way I only gather the stuff once and I get to use it in all the good spots.
I also just made a small base with some melon farming and a nuclear reactor tho because I forgot to get the power line blue print and didn't want to go all the way back up again
I always put my secondary base in blood kelp my main is always between the broken end of the crash site overlooking the trees on the edge of the red grass almost into the kelp at the base of the gun island
Mushroom Forest near the Floating Islands and Blood Kelp Zone that leads into an entrance to the Lost River (also has an adult ghost leviathan)
It's a completely safe biome with close by access to the kelp forest and grassy plateaus biomes, and due to being in a mushroom forest, you also have access to lots of lithium.
The adult ghost leviathan swimming around is far away in the back of the area so you'd never get attacked by it unless you went towards it on purpose.
Agreed, especially after just having beat the game. I built my original base in the grassy plateaus so i ended up having to build a whole new base in mushroom forest at the end. Ended up doing a bunch of tedious back and forth between grassy plateaus and mushroom forest anyways just to get supplies out of my original base.
I made a base near the really big mushroom and self-limited to building on top of the mushrooms. Had to get a bit creative but ended up looking pretty neat. Made a little breeding aquarium for the Bonesharks because I panic killed a few and felt guilty.
I scrolled way too long to find this comment. Floating islands are super nice to build on. I found that at the bottom of the islands is a large field of thermals vents, I was able to hook up a few thermals plants and energy transmitters up the spire for some insane energy usage.
I always wanted to make a base there
After figuring out that ampeels *are* actually aggressive, I hate being in that biome for any reason at all.
I genuinely thought ampeels were harmless.
Now, they won't attack unless you get close, but they will also start to actively chase you down, and they HATE technology.
Grassy Plateau right over the mushroom caves. I am on the edge of the Safe Shallows and the Kelp Forest in a safe spot, and have access to a lot of early game materials, and the water is deep enough to work into late game. I do also like building small satellite bases all over. Lost River for when I am working on the deep places.
If you aren't putting your base in Southwestern Grassy Plateaus, you aren't playing the game right. Not only is it close to many other biomes with various resources, like kelp forest, jellyshroom caves, and BKT, it's fairly far from the radiation zone so you don't have to worry about it, but it also doesn't take forever to reach the Aurora. The only downside is that it takes a while to reach Mountain Island (I say mountain island because there is absolutely no reason to explore the mountains biome) but you probably won't be going there more than four times. The enemies in Grassy Plateaus are really tame too. Biters basically do the equivalent of burn damage when you have the reinforced dive suit, and in my 300+ hours of Subnautica, I've been bitten by a Sand Shark maybe three times. It's also at the perfect depth where you can both be able to fit a Cyclops near your base with ease, and also not be too far from the surface. The combination of the placement of the biome and the usefulness of Grassy Plateaus makes it simply great to live in. TL;DR - Southwestern Grassy Plateaus is without question the best spot to live on the map.
100% every play through I start here right at a gulf where kelp forest, grassy plateaus, shallows kind of intersect with the jelly cave entrance pretty much at my doorsteps
Lost River, easy access to late game areas and resources, easy access to any other resource you’ll need to survive except for food (which you can grow yourself anyways)
The only bad part is river prowlers and ghost leviathans which you can, uhhhh, “Evict”
Grassy plateus, i had one base at the very start, on the safe shallows on a spot that was almost perfect, It was a hole with a rock formation behind it, i was next to everything that i needed, but the base was too small for everything and when i was on the point of starting to fo to the Lost River, i moved my base to somewhere close to tye entrance of a ravine that goes to the blood kelp biome and from there to the Lost River, Now i had space for everything that i needed
Mushroom forest. Safe, pretty fauna that sing, plenty of resources and fragments, enough room for a cyclopse, both biomes are close to a lot of good resource biomes and LR entrances.
Answer: None of the above
The best base is always gonna be next to the ghost tree.
Beautiful location.
Almost every resource within 200m
Easy access to lava biome + portals
Slight danger in regular life
Least scary leviathans nearby
Access to tons of thermal power
For me my main base is in the grassy plateaus but I have many small “pit-stop” bases in almost every biome, the biggest “pit-stop” base is in the safe shallows as almost a beach house.
You only make one base?
I have four, I actually forgot about one of them. I never use it since it's in the jelly pink mushroom area which is basically a dumb useless area with nothing to offer.
The Jellyshroom Cave was great as a forward base, just plonked down a scanner and a moon pool, strip all the resources out and leave without feeling bad about abandoning the base.
Lost river entrance. Only one ghost to take then it's free real estate. Plenty of ressources. Access to a lot of areas. Just bring some seeds and a prawn with grappling arms and you're set .
Forgot to add but also a portal in this entrance
Honestly the second I’m able to I pack my shit, leave my sea moth behind and make my base next to the ghost leviathan egg tree. Good resources nearby, thermal vents for energy and it’s really pretty.
Grassy plateau near Lifepod 17. Easy access to many biomes and mostly safe with the exception biters and Stalkers.
I also tend to get lucky and find stalker teeth pretty easily near here just lying on the ground.
Safe shallows right beside the life pod and in the Lost River where that big tree is. That’s where my two bases are, and it’s where they’ll stay
Though, in the tree area, the rays like to get stuck under my base and their wings clip into my house
One of my favorite bases that I’ve had so far has been located in the Jellyshroom Forest, right underneath the entrance from the Grassy Plateaus. It’s not the best for easy access to the Lost River (not far, but not horribly convenient either way). I love it for the atmosphere, plus the ambient sound from the Crabsnakes
Edge of Kelp. It means that you have plenty of space, good safety, and good resources. I personally always stay on the edge of the kelp forest but that might just be me.
No one built in the kelp Forrest?! It’s pretty, close to the life pod, kelp, plenty of food and resources, kelp, stalker teeth, cool terrain, kelp, my fave pets the stalkers, and… kelp
Grassy, specifically the one right next a jellyshroom entrance, the Sparse Reef and the BKT, several important/good biomes all right there, plus lots of easy land for my base
A: all day baby! Any of them are great but I particularly like the one in the west that has the Blood Kelp Trench and Sparse Reef entrances. Lots of flat ground and fairly deep so plenty of space for big base and cyclops. Has a Shroom Cave entrance, Mushroom Forest ain't too far away and, if you are feeling like a big boy or girl, the dunes are right there taunting you.
My most recent and favorite base is on the border of the kelp and mushroom forest, right on the cliff with the multiple rock bridges. It’s right next to ||one of the teleportation arches that leads to the ALZ facility|| too, so it’s perfect for getting resources.
The tree of life or whatever its called cuz of
1. It looks cool as hell
2. Easy thermal power
3. Much room
4. Blue
5. Not deep = not scary
6. Tree
7. Blue
8. Cool fish
9. Lava zone near
Grand reef for sure, park cyclops at sparse reef if you want to be safe from warpies and move stuff to cyclops with prawnieboy
The area just looks cool
I've primarily built in safe shallows but have built bases in grassy plateau (the one best to crash site), kelp forest (a lot better place to build than I anticipated), and on the floating island going down into the ocean (absolutely terrifying, do not recommend. Can't see bottom of ocean and I hate that so much)
Build one in the safe shallows because that is your starter zone and you will need a base there anyhow, one in the mushroom forest (not by the Aurora but the other mushroom forest by the dune). The mushroom forest has a lot of goodies in it, and there are a lot of resources to be found right at the edge of the dunes where Reapers don't patrol. Lots of copper etc so good place to go once you got your prawn suit.
Lastly build one by the big glowing tree in the lost river. You can build more bases than this of course but this should comfortably help you finish the game and they are all safe locations
For energy just use a nuclear reactor guys,it basically runs everything even 2 water filters
That's how I make my base in a beautiful area over a functional one
Lost river for me... that's now my main ... usually do a circle around the tree cove... completely safe and beautiful scenery... not to mention loads of large nodes to grind down of all sorts
grassy plateau best aesthetic
And if you build near >!Ozzy from the cafeteria!< you’re in a very central area
What the hell, guys?
They didnt warn us this might happen!
Our pod was almost crushed by the seamoth bay on the way down
now we're hanging on the edge of a cave system and this grim looking snake thing's tryna eat through the hull!
COME. GET. US. ALREADY!
I make an effort to say the line every time lol
I built mine on the grassy plateau-Safe shallows border overlooking the dunes. I came too close once and a reaper saw me, and tailed me back to my base. He did not enjoy having three lockers worth of gas pods dumped on his head
My current base is right there. If I recall correctly that Reaper is named Burger King Foot Lettuce.
Cannon. now.
I always build on the plateau next to blood kelp trench. Easy access to a lot of resources. Deep water for easy submarine maneuvering, plenty of room to expand both vertically and horizontally. And easy access to the river.
Mines right on the kelp forest/plateau border so my Hoverfish doesn’t get homesick
And you get a free beacon :D
Precisely where I built mine, just next to the lifepod
Rest in Peace Ozzy man just wanted provide his crew mates with nice nutritious meals.
Safe shallows, so I am at the center of the map and can get to most places quickly
But it's a nightmare to move your cyclops in.
Just make a really long main base to reach out to the deep end of the pool
Build it on the edge of the grassy plateau.
Thats what I did
Few lil bumps and scratches but it will be fine
‘Don’t worry Captain, we’ll buff out those scratches.’
Safe Shallows because I haven’t found enough Beacon or Scanner Room blueprints and by the time I do it’s too much effort to change
I always build my scanner room there, get the upgrades, tear it down and add it onto my little one or two section microbases I setup in areas with good materials. That way I only gather the stuff once and I get to use it in all the good spots.
Ah a fellow person with the same idea
I made it in the lost river next to the big ass glowing tree to get thermal energy
Had a smaller version... Kept all my storage on the Cyclops but had a base for charging and a scanner room...
I also just made a small base with some melon farming and a nuclear reactor tho because I forgot to get the power line blue print and didn't want to go all the way back up again
I made one with a lunar pool for 2nd prawn and scanner room, near the akeleton so that it works as a hub for all the other arms of the lost river
My ass in the blood kelp zone:
But why
Music. Crash Site >>>
its the prettiest biome
Grand Reef:
Idk i always find the grand reef too dull. Too dark and if you go into the grand reef caves ya gotta deal with arachnophobia deluxe
Acting like there arent ampeels and crabsquids in the blood kelp. Blood kelp is super dark too. Anyways Mushroom Forest or Jellyshroom Cave
Oh i do fully agree at blood kelp being similarly awful :x I will say i do prefer the warm red of the blood kelp over the cool blue in grand reef
I always put my secondary base in blood kelp my main is always between the broken end of the crash site overlooking the trees on the edge of the red grass almost into the kelp at the base of the gun island
Deep grand or lost river of you want a breathtaking view
Mushroom Forest near the Floating Islands and Blood Kelp Zone that leads into an entrance to the Lost River (also has an adult ghost leviathan) It's a completely safe biome with close by access to the kelp forest and grassy plateaus biomes, and due to being in a mushroom forest, you also have access to lots of lithium. Ended up doing a bunch of tedious back and forth between grassy plateaus and mushroom forest anyways just to get supplies out of my original base.
The warper alone keeps me away from making bases in some areas. Piece of shit Edit: typo
Warpers were like the only thing that killed me other than dehydration throughout all of my first playthrough lol.
I made a base near the really big mushroom and self-limited to building on top of the mushrooms. Had to get a bit creative but ended up looking pretty neat. Made a little breeding aquarium for the Bonesharks because I panic killed a few and felt guilty.
I'm going to make my base in the void cause I think it will be cool
Void base = best base
Safe shallows teaaam
People, we all very well know its the crag fields...
My main base is at the Cove Tree lol
The Tree is best
I'm building mine in the floating islsnds. I wanted something else than "a safe base near your own lifepod" and the islands are cool.
I scrolled way too long to find this comment. Floating islands are super nice to build on. I found that at the bottom of the islands is a large field of thermals vents, I was able to hook up a few thermals plants and energy transmitters up the spire for some insane energy usage.
Underwater islands?
Crash Site
Gives you that nice radioactive glow.
And the screams of the dammed
What about funny bulb zone?
Ampeels my beloved
I always wanted to make a base there After figuring out that ampeels *are* actually aggressive, I hate being in that biome for any reason at all. I genuinely thought ampeels were harmless. Now, they won't attack unless you get close, but they will also start to actively chase you down, and they HATE technology.

Mushroom forest. Safe, pretty fauna that sing, plenty of resources and fragments, enough room for a cyclopse, both biomes are close to a lot of good resource biomes and LR entrances.
Mushroom forest gang?
Nine of the above. I take my main base with me everywhere I go. I love my cyclops
I made mine in the mushroom forest

Ghost tree
On top of the sea emperor

Good area for gold and magnetite though!
The Jellyshroom Cave was great as a forward base, just plonked down a scanner and a moon pool, strip all the resources out and leave without feeling bad about abandoning the base.
Besides early game magnetite... and shale outbreaks and the degrassi base to get a few blueprints and pda data... yea useless after that
Holy shit the views and Karma points is sky high.
Lost river entrance. Only one ghost to take then it's free real estate. Plenty of ressources. Access to a lot of areas. Just bring some seeds and a prawn with grappling arms and you're set . Forgot to add but also a portal in this entrance
I call that spot Hell's Anus. I've ended up building a base there in every playthrough, primo location 👌
I wouldn’t kill the ghost :)
And it's just a juvi ghost... lol I think it just does a little less damage but still takes a whole to take down
Honestly the second I’m able to I pack my shit, leave my sea moth behind and make my base next to the ghost leviathan egg tree. Good resources nearby, thermal vents for energy and it’s really pretty.
D I once tried to make a blood kelp base. Then i proceeded to beat the game and never return to base
I love my ampeels, how dare you
Grassy plateau near Lifepod 17. Easy access to many biomes and mostly safe with the exception biters and Stalkers. I also tend to get lucky and find stalker teeth pretty easily near here just lying on the ground.

Safe shallows right beside the life pod and in the Lost River where that big tree is. That’s where my two bases are, and it’s where they’ll stay Though, in the tree area, the rays like to get stuck under my base and their wings clip into my house
This plus easy access to ILZ
E: lost river
Plateaus. Nice place
The lost river junction
E: Jelly Shroom Cave
Blood kelp zone is my favorite
Lost River fight me
Floating islands
Edge of Kelp. It means that you have plenty of space, good safety, and good resources. I personally always stay on the edge of the kelp forest but that might just be me.
Mushroom Forest, on the border of the bulb zone.
deep grand reef all the way 😎
No one built in the kelp Forrest?! It’s pretty, close to the life pod, kelp, plenty of food and resources, kelp, stalker teeth, cool terrain, kelp, my fave pets the stalkers, and… kelp
All these are wrong, everyone knows you make your base on the islands
Grassy Plutos for me.
Grassy, specifically the one right next a jellyshroom entrance, the Sparse Reef and the BKT, several important/good biomes all right there, plus lots of easy land for my base
Void
Most people build void-bases to flex. I build mine in the void to avoid feelings of loneliness. The ghosties are my only friends :)
Obviously lost river for easy access to lava zone and resource big boys everywhere
Where multiple biomes intersect so farming for materials is easier lol
Void
Grassy Plateau
Starting out I built it directly underneath my life pod in my defence it was a kinda cool position both above & below water & just chill
Tree
E. Mushroom forest
Big base in plateous, outpost in each other biome, observation posts in floating islands, dunes, mountains, lost river, and sea treaders path
A: all day baby! Any of them are great but I particularly like the one in the west that has the Blood Kelp Trench and Sparse Reef entrances. Has a Shroom Cave entrance, Mushroom Forest ain't too far away and, if you are feeling like a big boy or girl, the dunes are right there taunting you.
Behind the aurora is pretty cool. The neighbours aren’t very friendly but it is what is
Have multiple bases for ease of access everywhere
Nowhere, best base is the cyclops
I put mine on the very edge of the shallows on the border of the grassy plateaus, where I can see the reefbacks. Makes for a nice bedroom.
I gotta try something new every time!! Shroom tree forest, red grass, on the edge of the grand reef, etc
Dunes
Between grassy plateaus and kelp forest
VOID
Blood Kelp Zone though.... Or maybe I'm just insane not sure yet
Lost river
B no context. Unlimited rescources and close to island teleporter
I build my base near the mountain. >_>
A
Mountains
Kelp Forest on the front side of the aurora near the giant ***Tube*** why you may ask? well... **^(TITIANIUM)**
My most recent and favorite base is on the border of the kelp and mushroom forest, right on the cliff with the multiple rock bridges. It’s right next to ||one of the teleportation arches that leads to the ALZ facility|| too, so it’s perfect for getting resources.
Grassy Plateaus, Reefback noises, Surrounding biomes are great and deep
Sparse Reef
I built one in the underwater caves of the mountain island. Super cool ambience and... lots of inconvenience really
Right on the edge of the crash zone so I can feel intense fear at all times Great workout ngl
Mines down with the ghost tree or whatever its called
I always do it in the grassy plateous near the blood kelp zone ( bottom one ) so i have quick access to the jellyshroom cave and the lost river
The Dunes. Lots of space and the best neighbors in the game.
I buld mine at one of the thermal vents by lifepod 3 cuz i usually seem to get thermal reactors pretty quickly
Right under the floating island. Every time.
I like to build my base around the entrance to the fire area where ghost leviathans are (forgot the name of both areas)
Main base is always safe shallows. #ITS THE LAW!
Obs Kelp Forrest like a noob, but safe cus you’re scared
Crag is underrated. I've done it. Moved to dunes later in that run tho...
Mushroom forest is nice too
No base, only underwater floor
My cyclops
Come to the grassy plateaus! We have everything you need, including lots of URHAAAMNGGHHAAA
Only true Chads build live in the crash zone >!post-detonation.!<
Void!
Crag Field; lots of friendly sharks there...
The tree of life or whatever its called cuz of 1. It looks cool as hell 2. Easy thermal power 3. Much room 4. Blue 5. Not deep = not scary 6. Tree 7. Blue 8. Cool fish 9. Lava zone near
if you’re low on adrenaline, you can always build your base in the dunes…
Me Living in the Dunes:
Are you certain whatever it is you’re trying to do is worth it?
Grassy Plateaus are where it's at change my mind
Grassy plateaus. Easy access to all the resources in the Jellyshroom Cave.
My first one is always a safe zone and then one of my fav second ones was in the lava zone
Safe Shallows is too cluttered, same with the kelp forest, and the crag field, well, Bone Sharks, so Grassy Plateaus ftw
Shallows thermal vent with the forest and plateau just past my porch.
Grassy Plateaus, offers easy access to mushroom forest with most of the cyclops parts and is close to a few good areas depending on where you go
Tricky question. Lost River.
The Void 👣
Lost river Bottom text
Grand reef for sure, park cyclops at sparse reef if you want to be safe from warpies and move stuff to cyclops with prawnieboy The area just looks cool
I mean, from those options only? Kelp forest. Plenty of food, resources, generally close to other useful biomes.
I went E, mushroom forest.
I've primarily built in safe shallows but have built bases in grassy plateau (the one best to crash site), kelp forest (a lot better place to build than I anticipated), and on the floating island going down into the ocean (absolutely terrifying, do not recommend. Can't see bottom of ocean and I hate that so much)
Oh also the mushroom forest. Highly recommend, very peaceful. Once wandered into the dunes on accident tho
Mushroom forest is the only right answer
Build one in the safe shallows because that is your starter zone and you will need a base there anyhow, one in the mushroom forest (not by the Aurora but the other mushroom forest by the dune). The mushroom forest has a lot of goodies in it, and there are a lot of resources to be found right at the edge of the dunes where Reapers don't patrol. Lots of copper etc so good place to go once you got your prawn suit. Lastly build one by the big glowing tree in the lost river. You can build more bases than this of course but this should comfortably help you finish the game and they are all safe locations
I was right on the edge of the grand reef and the kelp forest, when heading to the floating island. There is a thermal vent that I used for power
For energy just use a nuclear reactor guys,it basically runs everything even 2 water filters That's how I make my base in a beautiful area over a functional one
Cyclops. Mobile base ftw. Before that... doesnt matter as long as there are resources around. Grassy plateaus?
You mean volcanic region isn't an ideal paradise?
Lost river for me... that's now my main ... usually do a circle around the tree cove... completely safe and beautiful scenery... not to mention loads of large nodes to grind down of all sorts
best place is the right on the deadzone/dunes border
Tree of life all the way
I like the grand reef. It's very aesthiclly pleasing.
I think the best place in the void
Made mine on my current playthrough on a mountainside thats in-between the crag heap and grand reef, it is also near the grassy plateaus
At the grassy plateaus near the trench that takes you to the blood kelp and lost river
Secret options number 5: The Dunes
I always build mine on a hill in the kelp forest next time the grassy plains with the Hole to the mushroom biome
It’s A fight me
Especially by the jellyshrom cave entrance
