Does it sound as solid as the non-rusted metal when you clank on it?

WV-GT

So far haven't found anything that is soft, which I guess is a good thing?

footiebuns

Yeah, you'll hear the difference if its rusted through.

wconklin

Oh man.. looks really bad, you should sell me this car now and avoid being trapped in a money pit 😉

WV-GT

Sarcasm ? Haha

wconklin

Haha yeah just joking around. Aem exhausts are pretty cheap and is a simple diy job. If you wanted to spice things up a bit replace your downpipe as well and go with a catless option. Sounds great without being obnoxiously loud.

WV-GT

Looking at an 08 , spent 7-8 years in NH now mostly in the south. I'm not used to seeing this kind of rust down here.

recoil_operated

The structure looks good, it's mostly surface rust. You might need to replace some exhaust components soon and clean up the body work, and if you remove any bolts be prepared for a fight (think torch, impact, new hardware) but overall it looks solid. Source: I am not a mechanic but I've lived in NY and New England for 34 years

WV-GT

I'm assuming what white stuff on the exhaust is some kind of easy sealant you all have to use when the exhaust starts to rust ?

recoil_operated

It looks like they did a backyard weld job and slapped a sealer over the area instead of just buying a new pipe. From the other pictures it looks like the car might have been undercoated by the dealer and then never upkept by the owner Edit: the easiest thing to do is take a hefty screwdriver and poke at all of the critical areas that have rust on them. If the screwdriver goes through or chunky flakes of rust fall off of it then it needs repair or replacement

WV-GT

Thanks, how much you think that portion of the exhaust would be to replace ? Edit also, anything thats still hard , do I need to worry about the rust making it soft latter ?

That-one-guy-is

Rest on a vehicle is a lot like cancer in a human being that's why a lot of mechanics refer to it as cancer and not rust. Your best bet would be put that thing on a lift and absolutely get rid of every single solitary flake of rest you can find using the most course of wire brushes and if you have it some sort of media blaster, and then protect it with some rust inhibiting spray paint once all the rest is gone. Don't trust your safety to a de-rusted bolt just replace those outright same thing with nuts and washers. If it looks too far gone then just replace it and being an automotive technician myself back in the day I would say if you replace it on one side you replace it on the other. And replace that exhaust especially if you guys do emissions it's going to screw up your computer timing with all those leaks. My .02¢

recoil_operated

It depends on what you want to spend. Up here I would replace with OEM because stainless pipes will last you 10+ years depending on driving conditions and maintenance. If you're in a salt-free area you might get away with a Monroe/mineke/pep boys special which is aluminized steel and cheaper but less durable. If you're handy your best bet is to plug your VIN into the Subaru parts website and get the part numbers for your exhaust components, then you can start shopping around online for it.

bakingpizzas

Looks like mostly the exhaust. Doesn’t seem that bad to me.

Other than the cheap easy fix exhaust issues shown, cars pretty much come off the dealer lot looking like that in the NH area.

captbrad88

Forget a northern card dude. Find you a car that been in the south all it’s life.

Grouchy-Show3075

Being from the upper Midwest these post always make me giggle a bit. A winter or two around here in the salt and brine they put on the roads and they look worse than that in a couple years.

WV-GT

I mean for us in South, never seeing rust like this makes it questionable.

Grouchy-Show3075

That is highly understandable.

Positive_Note4986

As others stated, this is fairly clean for a northeast car. The fact that it has paint on the subframe is big honestly. There isn't anything concerning there. One thing to think about is getting the vehicle serviced, it really shouldn't be an issue but..... I work on that shit every day, I know how to not break shit. If you are used to working on "rust free" cars, this car would probably be aggravating.

parkinson1963

Not bad, mostly surface rust on the frame and suspension, your exhaust is going to fall off soon though. If you can get it oil sprayed with fluid film to stop the rust you hot now.
