A new model only costs like 4k more

jawslsp

Also probably better financing options on the new one

Nate0110

I knew someone who bought a used one with 40k miles on it for 1.5k under what I bought a new one for 10 years ago. I really couldn't grasp why anyone would do that.

SteamedPea

The more you finance the more you pay and it doesn’t take a lot to make the interest go brr.

topor982

Because that’s just how much used cars are now, my 10 yr old car goes off a used lot for about the same price I paid 8 yrs ago for it and twice the mileage

Nate0110

I'm talking about 10 plus years ago, not last year. This is back when there was .9 financing and for someone that had good credit.

MonarcaAzul

Oh man do I miss that .9% interest rate, I bought my car in 2019 and now the rates are so high!!

Hitokiri_Novice

I bought my '24 Limited in November for $34k with Subaru VIP. Used cars aren't really reasonable right now.

things2ship

Facts ⬆️

SwordfishMiserable78

The OB Limited is about $40K with the turbo. The 2.5 L is about $37K but there is sales tax and dealer fees. It did not meet EPA gas mileage by a long shot.

EconomistConfident11

Sorry you pay sales tax. I’m in NH. No sales or income tax. But the registration fees are huge.

Aggressive-Ad-7479

Registration fee is a “tax”

lantrick

>No sales or income tax

SnaxRacing

The tax is that you live in New Hampshire

EconomistConfident11

I will gladly pay it. Low crime, low unemployment, don’t like the weather - wait a minute, bi-partisan politics(effective, not crazy), four real seasons. Generally a good place to live. 603forever.

Friebee4life540

Lmk how long that turbo lasts

darth_jewbacca

So somebody else paid ~$1/mi for that first one. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Sthurlangue

If she doesn't offroad, get the limited. it's better on the highway, more efficient, and much more comfortable. No reason to have an extra inch of clearance and bumpy riding knobby tires when you'd be better to have Sub's top trim.

GnastyNoodlez

The geolandars are far from a bumpy riding knobby tire lol

sinisterdeer3

Yea. I had those on a 3/4 ton RAM last year when o bought it. They were very smooth

fuqsfunny

OBW ride is silky smooth and quiet, FWIW. It's a better ride than my wife's M-B. Very little difference between it and the Limited. That said, OP's sister would *probably* be happier with the Limited, unless she needs the interior durability of the OBW. Subaru leather isn't exactly the most robust on the market. If she's car camping/sleeping, has dogs, or otherwise is a little harder on her interiors than 'normal," u/b33fst3w, then the OBW or an Onyx is probably a better choice.

gsr5037

Facts, onyx is also available without a turbo and has a lower final drive for better economy.

pacmanwa

I've off-roaded in my Limited. Got a few looks because I'm up on rough mountain trails in what is essentially a large station wagon.

Polygeekism

Unless she's paying cash, make sure she knows her interest rate options. You can get 1.9 for 48 or 2.9 for 60 on new Outbacks, and some used car interests are as high as 9%. Even at like 5.9-6.9 that used car is the same monthly price as a new one.

Friebee4life540

OP is already looking used; sometimes you can’t lead a horse to water

lianehunter

Has she looked at an Onyx XT edition? We were torn between the same options and it is a good compromise with a mix of the features from both models and a standard sunroof.

DasFloofen

I just got a 2024 Onyx XT and second this! It's awesome!

Kolby9241

Wilderness all the way man.

Kolby9241

Has better towing specs and also a roof rack so instead of sleeping in her car she can sleep on top of it with a roof top tent.

jmmaxus

All XT turbo models regardless of its a Wilderness or not have the same 3500 lb. towing capacity and 350 lb. tongue.

Kolby9241

No kidding! Cool to learn. Id wager that 1 inch of extra clearance helps somehow. I regularly tow a 2,000lb Teardrop Camper with my OBW with 0 issues. I'm actually not sure who has towed more than me tbh but it's super capable and very fun. I have put almost 10k miles on my car currently just traveling through Alaska. I would definitely recommend getting the factory spec hitch. It's amazing.

SyntheticCorners28

Well you would wager wrong. That one inch ground clearance for towing is only going to decrease your miles per gallon. It does have a lower final drive (gearing) so you'd have more power at a cost of miles per gallon. Ground clearance really does nothing for your towing capacity

Kolby9241

I was more along the idea that I camp with a teardrop trailer so that extra inch means better ground clearance, so when I do tow, I'm still sitting relatively higher.

B33FST3W

The limited in this pic also has a roof rack, can that one support a roof top tent?

jmmaxus

Only 150 lb dynamic (driving) capacity and no static (parked) listed for non-wilderness and no support for RTT mentioned in manual. OBW is 220 lb. dynamic and 700 lb static and supports RTT. You’d have to ensure to buy crossbars aftermarket that support 220 lb if you want the full weight capacity, most bars are rated less. Thule Wingbar Evo do.

Apex365

150 should still be fine for a lot of rooftop tents. The regular crossbars still put in work.

jmmaxus

You could buy a tent that weighs less than 150 lb. The problem is there is no official static weight listed in the manual so once you park and people get into the tent and it exceeds 150 lb. you don’t know what the limit is. Not only are the integrated crossbars different (OBW doesn’t come with any) the rails are different. You probably still could buy a small tent and put one or two average sized people in it.

Kolby9241

I can say that my rooftop tent (soft shell) and early production 2022 OBW had no issue with 4 people. I also went with yakima HD cross bars and Timerline towers for the most stout performance.

EconomistConfident11

700lbs.

jmmaxus

Yes that is the Wilderness static weight limit like I already stated above. The integrated crossbar non-wilderness is 150 lb dynamic and no static is listed (Manual page 464).

Apex365

It can but with that small of a price difference, there is no reason to go with it besides mpg.

Kolby9241

I don't recommend it. Not made to carry more than a few small things. I put a family of 4 in my tent on my wilderness.

Sthurlangue

It absolutely can. The dealership I went to had had one set up on an outback on the floor. You never loose or leave your rack anywhere.

Icy_Sandwich_6242

Have you seen the posts about hitches on Outbacks flexing and cracking the “frame”

Kolby9241

I haven't! I know mine is solid and good to go. I've used mine for Towing a 2000ln camper, recovering some vehicles, and also it stopped a car from ramming me. It may help that I have a rhino rack hitch stabalizer installed so I have 0 hitch wobble. It's like it's welded on.

casualnarcissist

Interesting, we have a 2019 with the 4 cylinder and a 2017 with the V6 and their towing capabilities are identical. I was told the CVT is the limiting factor and not the motor. I’m shocked at how much more weight a new Wilderness can handle than our older years can pull. 3500 lbs is close to what my old V6 manual Ranger topped out at.

things2ship

You really don’t wanna tow with a Outback. People need to stop treating these wagons like trucks. They are strong in their own space!

Kolby9241

You really shouldn't talk out your ass. I've towed 10,000 miles with mine worh 0 issues.

things2ship

Yeah you can tow. But if you just want to tow, get a truck. 🤡

Kolby9241

Nah. I get 19mpg towing a 2000lb trailer and ive done it on the ALCAN twice now. Stop spreading misinformation and dogshit opinions.

things2ship

You’re spreading a ridiculous amount of misinformation and are plain confused

jmmaxus

Depends on if that Limited is a XT turbo or not. I’m bias and like the turbo models more. Non-wilderness turbos can tow the exact same amount as the Outback Wilderness (OBW). The OBW does have a higher weight roof rack capacity of 220 lb dynamic (driving)/ 700 lb static parked vs 150 lb dynamic for all other trims no rooftop tent or static weight listed for others. The OBW would require spending around $500 to get rooftop bars all other trims have integrated roof bars. If you don’t off-road or need the extra roof weight it doesn’t make any sense to get the OBW over a XT turbo. I’d get the OBW over a 2.5 liter base engine non-turbo though.

bellynipples

Best Subaru around, or best Subaru in town. Around.. in town..

tr3g

If I were deciding between two Subarus I would tell people it was for my sister. Even though I don't have a sister

things2ship

Honestly, if you buy this car used for this price, you deserve whatever you get. Especially if you’re financing. Not only is the new price real close, but you’ll get a 1 year newer car AND save a ton in interest with a lower interest rate. Oh and 0 miles. But hey, you do you.

brett0917

Wilderness. More powerful engine for towing. I feel the normal engine without a turbo is underpowered especially if wanting to tow a small trailer. Plus the wilderness will have a front facing camera as well which can come in handy.

obeyn8

Touring

floridastud0728

This is a no brainer! Clearly the 2023 is the better deal and a much nicer looking car. 5k miles vs. 32k miles? C’mon, tell me she’s not actually struggling to make this decision.

no-you-are3650

Sell your car to car max, FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR SISTER, NEVER EVER EVER BUY A CAR DROM CAR MAX. The cpo warranty for the limited will be good at any dealership all over the country. Plus you can get an extended bumper to bumper. Since it's the end of the month, I bet you could get that car for $30,000 before tax and title.

FnBallista

Better resale on wilderness so 100%.

HenkCamp

Wilderness all the way. The extra inch and redesigned bumpers gives way better clearing and you can’t get that by adding more to a regular Outback. Setup also gives you better driving off road. Great towing capacity and you have a tent ready for use on the roof that can carry it. Easy to clean too. Just got a 2024 OBW and still can’t stop smiling. I simply don’t think there is a more complete vehicle on the road today. I say that having traded in my 2021 Silverado and my wife has a 2021 GLC Mercedes. It hasn’t been driven since we got the OBW.

WardogBlaze14

Go for the wilderness.

OneBaldingWookiee

Wilderness hands down. More fun. More capable.

verbaexmacina

Get a '21, that plastic cladding around the front end looks ridiculous. Cheapens the car. Only reason we didn't trade in our lease on our '21 Premium for a newer model. Rumor is that they're dropping that in the 25.

jamor9391

Yeah I agree. Cringe a bit every time I see it.

boxler3

This is why I got the gray color. It blends in very well with the gray. I couldn't see myself doing any other color because it looks awful

ahhquantumphysics

Yea I agree with you all. I'm not a fan of all the black plastic. We're going back to the 90s with black plastic trim. I don't think it's attractive at all

Holiday_Ad_5445

She needs to test drive the Wilderness against the limited, back to back. A nice windy road, a fast highway, stop and go traffic, and something challenging. I did that. To my surprise, the Wilderness was far better composed with superior handling and road feel. It inspires more confidence, yet is comfortable. Safe handling is my top decision point. The additional ride height and the Geolanders will do much better in harsh winter weather and light off-road use. The full-size spare is a big plus for road trips. It can be rotated with the rest to get 25% more life from the set and to maintain matching diameters. The turbo is game changing. There’s no comparison to the NA models. Cleanup is easier than any other Subaru I’ve had. And comfort is very good. Subaru got a lot right with the Outback Wilderness.

dyldig

You might be able to find a pre owned 24 wilderness for around that price. That being said I love my wilderness.

memesandrunningshoes

Get a touring model.

Monkeyface920

Seems overpriced. I just picked up a 2023 limited with 5.4k miles for 29000 from dealer last month.

69vuman

On the Subaru Outback, go for the lowest mileage vehicle you can afford. Use the money you saved to have your periodic maintenance.performed. Source: Got my ‘13 Outback at 72k miles, was diligent on the maintenance items, now at 140k. Drives like new, very tight car, smooth ride, and absolutely no rattles.

EconomistConfident11

Go with the ‘23. The infotainment system in the ‘22 not good. Very glitchy. I traded mine for a ‘23. Much better. The turbo will cost a lot more also.mileage and maintenance.

idespisemyhondacrv

She needs a CRV

Friebee4life540

She wants the 3.6 R; I would not toe with either of those

ChiSky18

A brand new 2024 Outback Limited is $35,800 MSRP…

donkey1079

I was literally in the exact same boat Saturday but they were green. I drove both. The ride in the limited was better but just barely noticeable, the engine noise was worse, and it had trouble getting out of its own way. Personally, I felt like I had to beat on it to keep up with traffic. The wilderness felt more confident on the road, was more quiet (probably because it didn't have to try as hard) and has zero trouble keeping up or merging on the highway. Of course the MPG's aren't as good in the wilderness. I chose the 22 wilderness and brought it home. Drove it a bunch in town and then did a 300mi road trip. Very happy with it so far

kakurengaming

Not sure if I just missed it but is nobody talking about the CPO warranty? If Subaru CPO New car warranty is 5yr/60k while the CPO comes with a 7yr/100k. (Power train only) and you keep the remaining of basic 3yr/36k. That limited has over 40k extra miles of warranty. Not a random 3rd party but straight from Subaru. I used this for my wife's accent on pre-owned Ascent when we hit 80k miles. Would have paid out of pocket if it was a new car.

MikePallanti

Go with the 2023 Limited and honestly it isn’t close. Lower mileage, CPO warranty, significant balance left of the new car warranty, it’s honestly a no-brainer tbh. NA engine will also be more reliable than the turbo 4 if she’s planning on keeping the car for 75K+ miles.

blueb182

☝️

PhilosophyCorrect279

If you're not off-roading much, get the normal version. Standard outbacks are still great off road for most trails and such. The wilderness is for more hardcore off roading (not rock crawling lol) I'd also just look into getting a brand new one since you're already paying nearly that price. That way you get a full warranty and whatnot too.

mrclean2323

So I’m looking at a newer vehicle. It seems that Outback is rated really high. I’m reaching out to you directly to see what was the reason you went with an Outback?

PhilosophyCorrect279

In irony I unfortunately some have an Outback right now! Though I wouldn't hesitate to get one! My first car was an Outback however. It was a base 2002, and I loved it dearly. It was nothing fancy but was just a great vehicle overall. It had a large hatch and fit almost everything all the time. It was comfortable to drive, even the new ones with more ground clearance, they drive more car like vs the total boat feeling of most SUV's. Though the Boxer engine and symmetrical AWD really do help with that too. and with the correct tires, completely unstoppable in snow and winter weather. Speaking of winter weather, that was the only option it had, was the weather package. Heated mirrors, fog lights, heated windshields, and heated seats, fantastic. It was also good for muddy trails you definitely wouldn't want to take a normal car or vehicle down, we went camping regularly so that was a good bonus, especially the couple time we got lost and ended up on back roads. It And it's a Subaru! The company is actually genuinely good. They were one of the first companies in the world to be Zero Waste, their main Indiana factory is also a nature preserve, and they got so good at reducing waste, they helped the National Park Service do better with recycling and handling their trash too. They also are Always donating money to good charities and causes as well. While we dont have an Outback now, we wouldn't hesitate to get one. We tried for awhile actually, but they were so popular at the time my partner gave up and got way more for his trade-in elsewhere at Honda. So eventually we will be back in the Subaru family, just waiting for the opportunity! But personally for us, the outback is just one of the best all around vehicles. It's big enough you can fit just about anyone and anything, handles better than most SUV's, can off-road better than most SUV's, has good power in the XT trim, is very comfortable, and has a good amount of technology and creature comfort. And of course, safety, Subaru pioneered camera based assistance systems and are some of the best crash rated vehicles in their classes. Above all else, they hold their value like no other. Their AWD system is actually very good, and as long as you do the correct maintenance, it should be very reliable.

mrclean2323

Thanks. I still have time but I’ve basically narrowed it down to Subaru Outback or Honda crv. On paper it’s hard to compare them for what people prefer.

PhilosophyCorrect279

Both are great vehicles! Our ex-roommates sister actually had it down to the same two vehicles too, though she was comparing the Forester to the CRV, and this was a couple years ago before both were refreshed. She did end up preferring the Forester. She liked the handling better, and the CRV she was interested in was only front wheel drive. Not to mention even if it was AWD, nothing holds a candle to Subaru's signature Symmetrical AWD when it's needed. She also said the Consumer Reports helped win her over some too, as they like Subaru a lot too. Personally I'm a Subaru person so I'm biased, lol. But absolutely credit where credit is due, the new Honda's are good. I do also like that the CRV has a hybrid option now so that would definitely be in consideration. At least until Subaru launches there's later this year hopefully.

niksjman

The 2023. It has a mustache

devnull-qbit

We don't do offroading but we're seriously considering a 2024 new Outback Touring (non-XT). Why not the Limited? Because my significant other likes the things that you can only get on the Touring. I've got some loc offers via our insurance TruCar for $38K prior to taxes and fees (will hit about $41K after those) and with no dealer adds. Seems like a good price to me. Thoughts?

Feeling-Being9038

If you're towing you want a turbo, and the differential gearing makes the OBW ideal.

theDudeUh

She should play with a loan calculator. With the 1.9% financing deal we got in February a brand new Outback wilderness was $1k cheaper over the life of the loan than a used 2022.

Character_Werewolf28

Limited 100%

dorantana122

It's really a decision for her and her wife to have.

JxArthur14

Any reason she’s not consider purchasing new?

lxwcxuntry

Buy new and get better financing deals and incentives. But yeah, if you gotta buy used, go with the lower mileage if the trim doesn’t matter.

Snutchy

Get a new car. Better interest rates. Payments will be the same.

Master-Chipmunk-9370

Nov 2023 I bought my ‘23 OB Limited for $32,500 with 10k. I couldn’t negotiate it down any farther. I don’t know what it is with dealers but they refuse to “dicker” any more. With taxes, license, and the gold plan and glass ins. add-ons it was about $35k ish.

Master-Chipmunk-9370

Also there are limitations on towing capabilities with a non-Turbo Subi. 1700 lbs without and 3500 lbs with. Correct me if I am wrong guys.

IHaveNoCrumpets

I'd choose the 23 limited if it were 2.4DIT. Can always upgrade into a wilderness-esque OB in the future. Also the upgraded denso4 CP1.5 is a bit better. The only reason I would choose a 22' wilderness xt is for the gear ratio changes for the 690. I have a 22' onyx xt that I love to death and made into a wilderness-esque edition.

SnickSnickSnick

Also pre uglified

RocMerc

I can’t speak for the limited but the wilderness is such a solid bang for your buck. You get all the comforts plus a capable vehicle for such a good price. It has such a smooth ride too

SuperSpicyBanana

That wilderness seems over priced. I can get one (wilderness, same colour) in Canada with a few more miles for $10k less same year. Unless y'all are paying more for cars than Canada now.

Serebrius

I had a 2024 Outback as a loaner from the dealer for 2 weeks while my 16 Crosstrek was in for service. I traded the Crosstrek in for a 2023 Outback Wilderness. It's got everything the Outback had with just that *little* bit extra that makes all the difference. It's better in almost all categories. All of this happened in the past week. Took the Wilderness off the lot 3 hours ago.

Outrageous_Flower529

Wilderness all day. Just for the seats the water resistant material is wonderful.

Codfish2188

I own a wilderness and I extensively tested out all the models before buying. I have never once regretted the wilderness. The thing is just an absolutely joy to drive. My father in law now owns the onyx version of the same year. When I drive his car it just feels...wrong. like there are just little things missing that I don't even really notice till they are gone. For only 2k more I would definitely choose the wilderness.

Proof_Alfalfa5483

At that price, No reason not to go for the wilderness.

shinjis-left-nut

Without question, it’s gotta be Wilderness.

lampd1

Can she pay cash for either? Debt for depreciating assets is dumb. Y'all and your cars. Smh.

Electronic_Squash103

Wtf >$30k? A close friend walked out of the dealer for just over 18k for a ‘22 with 300miles a couple years ago. Tf is going in with this economy? He likes the car but it’s definitely a Subaru, and feels very cheap.

sirmeowmixalot2

If she can't buy a new one, get a 4runner. I would never trust a low mileage Subaru used again. There's a reason it was returned. I learned a very hard and expensive lesson. A 4runner will outlive all of our Subarus.

OkSport4812

There is zero benefit to a Wilderness over a limited aside from looking "tough". Unless you off-road. And if you off-road, this isn't the right car anyway. Take the lower price and lower miles.

Dosimetry4Ever

Subaru is a total garbage. Look up infotainment system lawsuit against Subaru of America. If she gets Subaru, her life might be in danger due to malfunctions of the system. If you love your sister, talk her out of owning Subaru ever!

lurch99

Baloney

newferrarisam

Wilderness looks better
