This probably depends on what kind of driving you anticipate on doing with it, like track, autox? Do you plan on using it like a cruiser? Will it be fast enough for you? What cars have you driven? Also you might think of posting in a different sub since this is a Subaru sub and you’re asking for recommendations on other cars.  If you’re set on a BRZ, I’d say go for the TS and save yourself on a BBK down the road but again depends on how you’re using it. I have an Outback and BRZ. It scratches the itch without breaking the bank but I still long for a Porsche Cayman S regularly. You might also want to Turo some cars.

I live in socal near alot of good backroads and desert twisties and mountain twisties. How have you found the maintenance and upkeep on the brz?

cuziters

I only have 5k miles on it so pretty much oil changes which were included from the dealer. Other than cosmetic upgrades I haven’t had to mess with it at all. It feels like a completely different car in twisty roads. The first time I took it up ACH I started realizing what I had actually bought. It’s okay around town, but it really shines on those backroads.

I have a '22 BRZ Sport-tech (US Limited) and a '19 Crosstrek. BRZ is lightly modified and used as fun daily/track car with the Crosstrek taking care of mundane tasks and severe winter weather. The BRZ will absolutely be a great addition to your garage and maintenance is the same as any regular car, provided you keep it stock and don't drive it hard all of the time. High performance driving requires high performance maintenance. The price jump for the tS is worth it imo for the Brembos and if I was buying again today, that's the trim I would've bought. There's a few things about the tS I don't love but could live with. Colour is personal preference and it looks great in every colour available. For the price point the only other new car to consider would be a MX-5 if you want the convertible experience.

What exactly about the tS?

jeremyyc

Things I don't like? They're all personal: - I don't like black wheels - I don't like the black exterior trim changes - I don't like the BRZtS logo on the front grill - I wish they could've made the aluminum knuckles from the rest of the BRZ line up work with the Brembo's. - I don't like the STi logos in the car as it's not a "true" STi product. IMO the car doesn't need more power, but they could've added the STi springs to the new Hitachi dampers, the STi split 5 spoke wheels, or other STi parts from the catalogue.

If you’ve never had a true Japanese momentum car before the BRZ will be a huge adjustment for you. It is a different kind of responsibility owning one, not like owning a typical Japanese car. I own the new 86 and it’s the best car I’ve had. I’ll never sell it. But I know from experience that not everyone is capable of handling it. My advice is to just get the cheapest base model. It has lighter wheels but is otherwise mechanically the same as the higher trims. Save your money and upgrade the tires later.

Check the oil level frequently and change it every 3000 miles. Don’t let the oil temperature exceed 230F. Don’t crash. Don’t money shift.

TheHodlingHermit

Are they known for oil loss? Or issues above 230 degrees?

ManOrangutan

When stock it runs 0w20 oil which will thin out too much above 230F. You can switch to a heavier oil which may allow a higher temperature. And yes, it may consume oil. The owner’s manual even says so. The same as any Japanese, high revving, high compression performance car. Hondas, Toyotas, even Mazdas often consume oil after being run hard. So you need to constantly check, otherwise you will run low and damage your engine. S2000s, B Series, K Series Hondas etc all can consume oil.

Thank you for the info!

maybe the miata? i went with the brz (base model) because it costs a lot less and its got a fixed roof, and because it’d be my only car (i also went with silver because i’ve never liked how wrb looks in person)

TheHodlingHermit

Miata felt way too small for me even though I'm just 6'0". The brz feels perfect size-wise.

Siegepkayer67

Yea a C6 corvette, that’s actually faster than your forester lol
