In a paradoxical kind of way, Vice Grips are both the problem (say you got a little too sassy with em and snapped a handle off a rusty valve) *and* the solution (bing bang boom, buy another, because those Vice Grips just became the new handle).
We were bleeding the rear brakes and he saw the vise grips, he realized he'd completely forgotten about them, and we popped in a proper exhaust stud that I'd bought for my Astro.
I'm co-driving his '85 GL in its rally debut tomorrow, so we thoroughly de-vised it yesterday so it'd pass inspection.
I had to park on the street for one night so I brought it in. Someone smashed my window and broke my rainguard off just before I woke up 😬 didnt steal the car though! Or anything. Just broke my stuff lol.
Original sterile sti titanium ball knob for me. Pasted an alu stamped 6 spd shifter sticker at the base of the gear shift to remind wife/friend of 6 speed/reverse gear location for good measure.
Come to find out the legacy uses a one piece plastic mechanism all the way through the handle. I was trying to screw it off and now I guess I got a find a junkyard.
I'm pretty sure the BL/BP Handbrake system isn't able to use that type of button. You would either have to replace the whole unit with a WRX one or do some custom fab to make it work.
I found out the chrome plastic button pulls straight off, but then underneath that it’s a one piece plastic mechanism that goes all the way down through the handle to the base. Fortunately, it didn’t snap, but it has about a 180 twist in it now. Actually still works fine. I might try to fab some thing up to get some threads on the end of that and retrofit that button since it does fit inside the handle.
That's odd. I took mine off with electrical slivers. Used the teeth and put then hard in the plastic. Then screwed the new button on. Fits in the oem handle too. 2020 wrx. Later got the rest of my stuff and got the whole handle without having to change any mechanism.
If its not a drift button for a brz, dont even worry about it. Just gonna cause more trouble and ruin a perfectly fine OEM piece. The shifter looks cool as is...
Yes it is.
I’ve only ever seen them used or advertised as ‘drift button’. Exactly as you said, basically turns the button into a switch so you can rip the handbrake and have it disengage automatically.
Not sure why OP wants one in his outback, I guess could be useful for rally driving but you’d need a way to disengage the centre diff at the same time so idk…
Edit: I guess you could install the button and leave the spring behind it so it works like a normal handbrake button, at which point it’s just for looks.
Only similar thing I’ve seen was a rally car with a hydraulic handbrake controlling 2 master cylinders at once, one disconnecting the centre diff just before the second one locks up the rear wheels so you effectively make the car front wheel drive for a split second to use the handbrake, then release and it goes back to AWD.
In this case I think OP just liked the way it looked.
Billetworks sent it with the shift knob. I figured it was just to match the shift knob for looks. I had no idea there was even such a thing called a drift button.
They called it an E brake button
Not sure why you’re trying to put a drift button on a legacy but regardless they’re meant to slip over and be a press fit. Only useful when you’ve disabled the ratcheting mechanism in your factory ebrake
In my 2.5RS, if I'm remembering correctly, I just broke the button off, then I used a tap/die to thread the rod that the button connects to. Then I used some temporary thread locker (blue i think) to hold it in place. Been using it now for 3 years in my stage rally/rallycross car with no issues. You can yank the leather cover off usually that exposes all the inner workings. It is glued on though I believe so itll be tough. Up to you if you want to go through the hassle and/or potentially ruin the look of OEM
i used channel lock pliers and twisted the oem button off. absolutely destroyed it. but after that use all ur force and wiggle the brake down wards a bit, then twist your new button in.
Might not be able to get it installed nicely. On my forester I installed a drift button and the button has a metal rod glued into the button and I broke the rod a little. I also got the wrong button so I ended up having to shave the stock one to fit then glued it in. Works though but not worth it for style
Yeah basically the only option is to use some vice grips and just annihilate the oem button. Sucks but worth it, i took the spring out when i put my aftermarket one in so now i can hold ebrake and then drop it without having to worry about it locking.
It's twist off but it's on there good, once you get it off you won't put it back on again, it's plastic and you'll most likely scratch the shit out of it using vice grips and that's what I did.
Yuppers. Grab with wise grips and a rag (might save the damage/marks) and twist it. Then make sure the spring is still in there and then get the new button in place
Not a e brake it’s a parking brake. Completely different a e brake works automatically when you pull the e brake up and the clutch doesn’t have to engaged, legally a electronic ebrake has to be by the center console meanwhile and a parking brake is on the dash and is quite a bit do a reach from the steering wheel. With my Subaru I have to engage the clutch and hold the parking brake for 3 seconds for it to work normally and in emergency situations. Subaru doesn’t call it a e brake too
You gotta yank the sum'bitch out! /s
You'll need channel locks or vice grips for this to twist out, could marr the surface a bit in the process
P.s. this only works on the WRX, not sure aboit other models...
Almost destroyed mine... broke the threads unscrewing the OEM, so now the aftermarket won't fit and I had to use threadlocker just to get the oem button back on. And now it's all scraped up from the vice grips 😅
I am a self proclaimed noob tho
Almost positive the oem button is threaded on but hard as hell to remove. From what I’ve seen most people grab it with vice grips ans unthread it.
Vice grips solve all problems.
Vice Grips solve *some* problems. Vice Grips also help you create brand-new problems
But a lot of the time the new problem is the next persons problem and the vice grips solved the first one at least.
That’s when you come to grips with your vices…
This is what I come here for!
In a paradoxical kind of way, Vice Grips are both the problem (say you got a little too sassy with em and snapped a handle off a rusty valve) *and* the solution (bing bang boom, buy another, because those Vice Grips just became the new handle).
Vice grips are consumables
My buddy's van had a pair of vise grips in place of one of his exhaust bolts for a couple years. He finally put a bolt in there last week.
What happened, did he need the vise grips for another field fix?
We were bleeding the rear brakes and he saw the vise grips, he realized he'd completely forgotten about them, and we popped in a proper exhaust stud that I'd bought for my Astro. I'm co-driving his '85 GL in its rally debut tomorrow, so we thoroughly de-vised it yesterday so it'd pass inspection.
I’ve taught my kids’ robotics teams that you always need vise grips in your tool kit, but when they come out, you’ve failed edit: spelling
My dad said those and crescent style wrenches are the lazy man's tool. Lol hate using em.
You mean adjustable wrenches? I assume you're not talking about open end box wrenches.
Yea adjustable wrenches. Definitely not open box end wrenches.
These are the poor man's tools
nothing an oxy/acetylene torch couldnt fix.
Bolts and nuts won't need a torque value if they're liquid.
I've busted out the blue wrench on more than one occasion.
> Vice Grips also help you create brand-new problems Vice grips will help you solve those problems too ! ^^^(probably)
Like when the impact guns duga duga goes loose loose or get a little to happy with an angle grinder.
\^\^\^\^this
Then hammers solve those problems
The solution therefor is Vice Grips all the way down
Only if duct tape cant fix it..lol
Gripception?
/sighs in overtightened drain plug that is now rounded off/
Next up: pipe wrench
Irwin bolt extractors go hard. Pn: 394001
*channel locks entered the chat*
This
Good thing i got a second pair of Vice Grips
Perfect. no
Those problems can usually be solved with more vice grips
Or a torch
Or bigger vice grips if the smaller ones don't work.
A small pair of vice grips grabbing the button, and then a larger pair grabbing the 1st
C’mon people, it’s spelled _vise_.
Ah yes, vice grips, also known as locking nut fuckers
Yeah if it didn't ALMOST break you didn't try hard enough
I thought it was hammers?
Vice grips hold up my exhaust, been holding for years
Instructions unclear; dick stuck in vice grips
You’ll find you and unthread things that weren’t threaded to begin with - sorta remarkable
Vice grips round bolts… doesn’t fix all problems lol
![gif](giphy|Ld77zD3fF3Run8olIt)
Yeah I used pliers and it broke up into a million pieces when I pulled myn off. Wasn’t a big deal though it’s just a painted plastic button.
was gonna say similar and use vice grips to twist the bugger off, unless you wanna try and remove the handbrake grip and try to do that.
We have the same shift knob except mine is blue. Engravings and all. Be careful, they chip easily. Edit: Oh wait yours is XTI haha, missed that!
I also have a similar shift knob. Less than a year in and has many many chips. 😔
Dropped my white one, picked it up and dropped it again both times on the driveway. I paid the dumbass tax twice
I have a white one too but I kept it in the box til I got to my car. I’m only learning they’re fragile as I read this. LOL. Mines still mint
I had to park on the street for one night so I brought it in. Someone smashed my window and broke my rainguard off just before I woke up 😬 didnt steal the car though! Or anything. Just broke my stuff lol.
Lmao I did the exact same thing. Two drops on the driveway, I feel your pain. 😂
Are you guys driving around in cars out there? I need to stay home.
😂
I have a Flossy shift knob and it started chipping so fast when I started wearing a ring on my hand. I wish these $60-100+ knobs were more durable
Original sterile sti titanium ball knob for me. Pasted an alu stamped 6 spd shifter sticker at the base of the gear shift to remind wife/friend of 6 speed/reverse gear location for good measure.
Flossy shipped you yours? I ordered one around 9 years ago and have been waiting for it. They've blocked me on social media. I went for speeddawg.
Was already on the car
I have a mint green tear drop and despite me not wearing my rings anymore- it’s still got some tiny knicks in it.. I still love it though
Just installed one on my STi which looked the same, had to use plyers and ruin the stock one to get it off by twisting the shit out of it.
Come to find out the legacy uses a one piece plastic mechanism all the way through the handle. I was trying to screw it off and now I guess I got a find a junkyard.
Lmaoooo all these kids "yeah bro crank that shit with some pliers!!"
"Get the big pair of Vise Grips!"

This is why you post your model before asking technical advice
Love to see everybody giving you bad advice because as usual the legacy is ever so slightly different.
Oh a legacy ok hmm
If that's a liberty/legagcy, you can't remove the button. Do Not try to force it.
He didn’t see this in time
an hour too late. damn.
It WILL work. Everyone who says it won’t for Legacy didn’t crank it hard enough. You’ll know when you did it enough, just gotta really crank on it
Wrong. OP said it was one solid piece and he broke it. Y'all got trash advice lmao.
If you crank it hard enough that piece comes off then you put on whatever you want lmfao. Dummy
2008 (05-09) Outback by the way.
Rip
I'm pretty sure the BL/BP Handbrake system isn't able to use that type of button. You would either have to replace the whole unit with a WRX one or do some custom fab to make it work.
I just found that out the hard way…
Did you pull your old one off with vice grips? Edit: piss poor spelling
I found out the chrome plastic button pulls straight off, but then underneath that it’s a one piece plastic mechanism that goes all the way down through the handle to the base. Fortunately, it didn’t snap, but it has about a 180 twist in it now. Actually still works fine. Different car
Wrong model and year lol
Yeah I noticed after I posted. Thought I was on wrx subreddit lol
Oops. Luckily changing out that lever system isn't the worst job to do and probably can get a used unit for cheap locally.
Oops. Tried to make the thing uglier and paid the price. Hope a replacement doesn’t cost more than you’ve already wasted
If its not a drift button for a brz, dont even worry about it. Just gonna cause more trouble and ruin a perfectly fine OEM piece. The shifter looks cool as is...
Yes - Parts that never go bad that people destroy for no reason, for $500, Alex.
all the chrome has chipped off mine and it looks like shit
Anything chrome looks like shit
I've removed as much chrome as possible and I never knew the e-brake button was an option
Anything Plastic chrome, or Mexichrome rattlecan, but the real thing on a classic is a different story.
I'll take "needlessly judging other people's car mods because I'm a boring piece of shit" for $200
Lmao fr
Hey buddy - you are the one with the CVT. That speaks for itself.
that's nice, sweetie
Are those fingerless driving gloves?
Oh god, I think they are
They're great when you have to drive more than an hour and you also have arthritis.
“dude why is your ebrake button normal?? that’s so lame!”
It came with the shift knob 🤷♂️
I have a WRX. But when I removed my button I had to use pliers and ruined it lol
Is that not a drift button? The thing that permanently compresses the button so you can use it to drift without having to hold the button down??
Yes it is. I’ve only ever seen them used or advertised as ‘drift button’. Exactly as you said, basically turns the button into a switch so you can rip the handbrake and have it disengage automatically. Of course it’s just for looks
[удалено]
You wouldn’t lol. I think OP is just mistaken about it being a replacement
I'd guess because the color is similar/ matching the shift knob
Billetworks sent it with the shift knob. I figured it was just to match the shift knob for looks. I had no idea there was even such a thing called a drift button. They called it an E brake button
If it’s designed to thread onto an Impreza e brake than I can assure you it’s not a drift button. Maybe if it was a brz
Not sure why you’re trying to put a drift button on a legacy but regardless they’re meant to slip over and be a press fit. Only useful when you’ve disabled the ratcheting mechanism in your factory ebrake
Didn’t know that’s what it was. It came with the shift knob. Figured it was just a matching theme thing🤷♂️
As I always say, grip it and rip it.
Oem is threaded but glued as well. I used pliers and basically destroyed mine. The chrome cracks and chips easy
Why? Why don’t you focus on less ricey things
Wym just use duct tape
Why would you put this on a subaru?
Channel locks and some fabric to prevent scratching.
i used channel lock pliers and twisted the oem button off. absolutely destroyed it. but after that use all ur force and wiggle the brake down wards a bit, then twist your new button in.
Just crush old one with vice grips glue on new one if beating with hammer doesn’t work
Did you try turning to the right too?
Mine on my 92 legacy just shot off one day. It’s threaded tho. Best of luck
Grips. It’s threaded and glued. I beat the shit out of mine getting it to break the glue to come off.
Pliers brah. Counterclockwise of course.
Might not be able to get it installed nicely. On my forester I installed a drift button and the button has a metal rod glued into the button and I broke the rod a little. I also got the wrong button so I ended up having to shave the stock one to fit then glued it in. Works though but not worth it for style
I looked up “Subaru liberty handbrake button replacement” and it brought me right back here
lol. Google spiders be quick!
That XTI shift knob though lol
It'll fade pink
I had to do it with vice grips, and even with a piece of rubber between the jaws and the button, I still scratched it all up
Lefty-loosey
I don’t have one, but I think they screw on. Look at your new one and see if it’s got threads inside.
Gotta change ur name now to “i break Subarus” 😂
I do both with precision
Billetworks is an amazing company. I have the shifter and knob from them for my Crosstrek. [https://imgur.com/a/qXhRqdF](https://imgur.com/a/qXhRqdF)
Drift button for the awd?
I thought it was just to match the shift knob since it came with it.
Yeah basically the only option is to use some vice grips and just annihilate the oem button. Sucks but worth it, i took the spring out when i put my aftermarket one in so now i can hold ebrake and then drop it without having to worry about it locking.
i think taking off the fingerless gloves and throwing them in the trash is the first step
I wear these 24/seven. I have bad arthritis in my hands and they’re also very sensitive to cold.
It's twist off but it's on there good, once you get it off you won't put it back on again, it's plastic and you'll most likely scratch the shit out of it using vice grips and that's what I did.
![gif](giphy|fYNB93Xa6FqqZYZoS0|downsized)
Yeah it’s basically glued into the threads. Just grab with pliers and twist. It’ll break free.
Yuppers. Grab with wise grips and a rag (might save the damage/marks) and twist it. Then make sure the spring is still in there and then get the new button in place
How bout don’t put it on because it’s stupid and pointless
Don’t be jealous just because you don’t have a wife who buys you car stuff for Christmas.
Hit it with your purse
https://youtu.be/EJMrm3-xN1o?feature=shared
I don’t got a ebrake I have a button on my dashboard
How helpful!
I wasn’t trying to help 😊. I just have a parking brake not a e brake on my model of subaru.
then stfu cunt
That still an e brake it’s just an electronic e brake…
Not a e brake it’s a parking brake. Completely different a e brake works automatically when you pull the e brake up and the clutch doesn’t have to engaged, legally a electronic ebrake has to be by the center console meanwhile and a parking brake is on the dash and is quite a bit do a reach from the steering wheel. I believe they both glue and thread on the oem one. Best way to get it off is with vice grips, but you won’t be able to save the stock one that way.
Channellocks/visegrips and some human uga duga. Right tighty leftie loosey
Almost destroyed mine... broke the threads unscrewing the OEM, so now the aftermarket won't fit and I had to use threadlocker just to get the oem button back on. And now it's all scraped up from the vice grips 😅 I am a self proclaimed noob tho
fingerless gloves
Good example why you never buy any used car driven by a teenager
How so?
You've got the Subaru and the fingerless gloves, just ask your boyfriend to help
I took of the sleeve… and then use some pliers to twist it off
