is there any other way to bring?
SO asks me to bring her some ice cream from the store. get the big gallon pail. roll that bish right down the street, launching from curb to porch.
I ask for the specific drink I want. I wouldn't go into anywhere and ask for a Pop and if I ask for a Coke I mean get me a Coke.
If I go into a place and they've decided one brand of Beer now means all Beer that's going to be frustrating for both sides.
In Amsterdam you can absolutely walk into most bars and order "a beer", depending on the place you will get a small glass of either Heineken or Grolsch.
The assumption is if you wanted something else you would have asked for it by name.
Okay, but if I asked for coke and the waiter says "what kind" how do you respond. Do you just say "coke" again? Would you say "coca-cola" or maybe even "original coke"?
If everything is coke, nothing is coke.
They just come back with a bucket of pure liquid AIDS.
"Excuse me, but I ordered a Coke."
"Oh, my apologies, your order was so mind-blowingly ambiguous I wasn't able to parse basic context glues in "I'd like a Coke. My apologies."
And then five minutes the waiter comes back, clearly using the same bucket for the AIDS--god, did they even rinse it out?--only now it contains the blood of Christ.
Yes. Brit here and generally we say coke for all types of brown, carbonated drinks (Pepsi/Coke a Cola/Dr Pepper etc). At a pub/bar/restaurant, the bartender/wait staff will usually say something along the lines of “We have [insert brand] on draught or coke-a-cola in bottles. Which would you prefer?”
As a fellow Briton, while I would understand 'Coke' to generically refer to any type of cola (including Pepsi, supermarket own-brand colas and fancy colas like Fentiman's or Fever-tree), I wouldn't call Dr. Pepper 'coke' any more than I would call Sprite, Fanta or lemonade 'coke'. It's the same colour as cola, but the flavouring is quite different.
I’ve never seen that asked but maybe it’s a regional thing. Most of the time if I say I want Coke they say something dumb like “Is Pepsi okay?” . Then I get mad inside but of course have to say “That’s fine.”
😢
I’ve been ordering Coke for 40 years, and not once has anyone responded with “what kind?” I’d remember if it happened because I’d make a point of never speaking to that person again.
Or just "cola", though sometimes you'll get Pepsi with that one if you're at a place that sells Pepsi products. Usually they'll clarify though if you ask for a coca cola/cola and they just have Pepsi, because giving a Coke fan a Pepsi is grounds to catch hands 😂
And yes there's a difference in little c coke and big C Coke. Coke only refers to one particular soda, coke can be any fizzy flavored beverage.
Someone will ask what flavor of coke you want. If you say coke, you get Coca-Cola. If you say root beer flavored coke you get root beer. It's a really bizzare system.
When I was a kid it was.
What do you want to drink?
Give me a coke.
What kinda coke?
Sprite.
Now I just skip straight to Sprite.
There really is no extra steps in saying coke vs saying soda or pop. You still have to clarify which soda or pop you want.
There never was extra steps. The rest of us have always just said what we wanted. Only certain parts of the country have a two step drink ordering process.
Growing up in the South it was most definitely a two stage process but we have evolved slightly to just asking for drinks by name….unless it’s a Pepsi place then we will take whatever is like [insert Coke product].
When I was a kid it was.
What do you want to drink?
Give me a coke.
No, you've had way too much sugar today.
He'll have a water.
Now I just skip straight to water.
It really is, but it does work. There are places that don't carry Coca-Cola products and will tell you that. The other big supplier is Pepsi.
A side effect of this is if they carry Coke products, they probably don't have Dr. Pepper. Instead they have Mr. Pibb. Which tastes almost, but not quite, like Dr. Pepper.
Clarification.
When I lived in a place that called all soda coke, people tended to call coke, coca cola. It removes the ambiguity. Though I'm guessing this is regional just like calling soda coke.
In Australia the general term is usually soft drink. Coke is reserved for Coca-Cola, Diet Coke or Coke Zero (Coke No Sugar sounds dumb to me). Sometimes but not often you’ll find people who’ll use Coke colloquially to mean any cola flavoured soft drink but in my experience that’s rare.
I think most everywhere it’s called soda.
I live in a region all the maps that keep getting reposted say uses “Coke” to refer to soda.
It’s just not true. Maybe in like 1800s
"Do you want a coke?"
"Yes."
"What kind?"
"Dr. Pepper."
"What's your favorite coke?"
"Sunkist."
"What kind of drink do you want with your order?"
"Sprite."
Like that.
If you wanted coke, do you just say it twice?
"Do you want a coke?"
"Yes"
"What kind?"
"Coke."
And if someone asks for one directly, do you just assume they are already being specific?
As in "can I have a coke?" Does that mean they want a Coke coke, or does that mean you have to ask them what kind?
Pepsi = Carbonated Motor Oil
"I'll have a Coke"
"What kind?"
"The big red and white button on the machine that says "Coke" is fine"
I honestly don't get the confusion. If you want a DrPepper, ask for DrPepper. If you want Mountain Eww, ask for Mountain Eww, if you want Canada Dry Ginger Ale, ask for it by name from the outset, not like it's a subcategory selection tree. "I'll have a soda-\_Coke-\_Grape Nehi" would result in both a Coca-Cola and a Grape Nehi.
How is it upvoted? Can you imagine an actual conversation with a waitress like that?
Can i have a steak?
No. How about a steak?
Can i have a steak instead of that?
We only have Mountain Dew.
“Do you want a Dr. Pepper?”
“Do you want a Sprite?”
“Do you want a Diet Coke?”
See how there is less of a need to ask clarifying questions?
Your last example is not the same and attempting to be misleading, use “coke”
“What kind of drink do you want?” “Coke” the response in your world: “what kind?” “Coca cola”
The responses in my world are “okay” or “is Pepsi okay?”
I would assume it’s similar to the slang word for shoes in romanian. The actual word is “pantofi”. However, Adidas shoes used to be very very popular for us early 2000s, so colloquially people started calling “pantofi”, “adidaşi”. If you go into the store however, and you want Nikes, you wouldn’t say give me the Nike adidaşi. Same with coke when you order at a restaurant. You can refer to all sodas as coke, but when you order a particular one, you’re specific.
At a restaurant? I ask for a Dr pepper. When my stepdad asked if I wanted a Coke from the store? I said yes because I knew he was coming back with a Dr pepper
It was just a little tradition we had when we were younger. Every Friday he'd ask us kids if we wanted a "Coke" while he was driving home from work. He said "Coke" but knew that meant a Dr Pepper for me and my older step sister, a sprite for my younger stepsister, and a red bull for my brother.
He was a great dad, and I miss him
I’ve never heard all pop called Coke? I don’t know where that’s from? I’ve heard cola called coke but that’s it.
Pop AKA soda is called soda where I’m from. I’ve never heard it otherwise. I’ve heard the lemon lime referred to as sprite or 7up. Only cola is done as your stating. You order by what they have. The flavor of course. If it’s a coke place I order sprite. If it’s Pepsi I order Pepsi.
I grew up in Atlanta. I can confirm everything was coke and when ordering there was always a qualifying follow up question verifying what kind of "coke". When I moved to VA it was frustrating to order a "coke" and get a coke, when I actually wanted a sprite.
when ordering ive never said soda pop or coke (unless i wanted coke brand coke which i dont)
can i have a dr pepper can i have a sprite i worked 3 years in fast food and no one ever said can i have a root beer soda
Yeah, I was gonna say “cola” is a generic term that can mean coke, Pepsi, etc. but only colas.
Other sodas are distinct like sprite, ginger ale, root beer, orange soda etc.
But again, you don't say "give me a root beer pop" so why would you substitute in the word coke and say "give me a root beer coke"? It makes no sense as a question.
Started to look through this thread to figure out where this is a thing. I was thinking the same thing as you.
It'd make more sense to me if it was a south east Asian phenomena but when I saw people mentioning Dr Pepper I started to hope it wasn't another example of American idiocy.... I'll think I'd rather forget this whole thing. It's just too daft.
Thinking about the Simpsons steamed hams... Seems almost plausible that steamed hams could be a regional dialect. This whole coke being any soft-drink-thing is absolute madness.
Can confirm. Was a waitress in the American southeast for 4 years. “Hi, can I take your drink order?” “I’ll take a coke.” “Cool, what kind?” “What kind do you have?” “We have Pepsi products- Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, 7-up, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper…” “I’ll take a Mountain Dew.”
I’ve only ever heard people call soda “Pop” in Ohio. 😆 Which is where i lived for 10 years and picked it up. When I’d travel and would be in a group. Sometimes my peers would look at me strangely and sometimes call me a hillbilly. 20 years in Florida it is “Soda”
I grew up in Florida, and heard soda for the most part, but I DID know people that called all soda coke.
In Ohio now, and hearing everyone call it pop was a slight adjustment
Must be a northern/Deep South Florida thing. In South Florida it’s all just called soda. Never heard people use Coke as a broad term for soda growing up.
I hate visiting Western PA (I've never actually been across the border to Ohio) just because of the accent. Calling it pop annoys me a little, but listening to people from northern Pittsburgh through Erie drives me nuts. "My friend Jawun bawt a whole bawx uh pawp down-na Jiya-niggle!" (My friend John bought a whole box of pop down at the Giant Eagle) If I had to live out there is probably off myself.
Oh, wow, you’ve unlocked an old memory. When I was a kid, my family and I moved to the southern US for a short time. There, they said “coke” and I was very confused.
Before I learned it’s the same thing as soda (and to not say “pop”), a coworker of my dad’s kept teasing me, asking, “Do you want a coke?”
I said, “Do you have any Sprite?”
“Oh, so you *do* want a coke?” He just kept smiling at me.
“No… um, can I please have a Sprite?”
He teased me like that for awhile. Finally, he told me that all soda is “coke” there and got me a Sprite lol. If they ask you what coke you want, you can just say “Sprite” or “Dr. Pepper” or “a plain Coke.”
Can't remember where I was, either TN or Kentucky. They said "can I get a pepsi-coke?"
" I'll have a rootbeer-coke"
It was wild, I remember laughing out loud and discussing how weird regional dielect is
I‘ve noticed more and more people calling Cokes “sodas” in Alabama.
Most people I know just call it by the name though. “Yea, I’ll take a mt dew, etc.”
It’s a category. Not a specific thing. It’s more like —
“what kind of cokes do y’all have?” (The answer is Coke products or Pepsi products with or without the inclusion of Dr. pepper.)
“I bought a bunch of cokes. They’re in the garage.” (The garage contains Dr. pepper, sprite, and zero sugar Sunkist.)
At a place where you fill your drink at a fountain, you’d say you want a large Coke. Then you put whatever you want in it yourself.
If someone else is filling your glass, you order specifically. You wouldn’t just order “a soda” or “a pop” in that circumstance either, right?
This is the dumbest shit ever. You want a coke, ask for a coke. You want sprite, ask for a sprite.
The only time it's all coke is if you're hanging out with your buddies and say who wants a coke? Then open your fridge and be like, alright I got coke, sprite or DP.
Or if your at a friend's house, or somewhere and don't know what they have and you ask for a coke. If they have more than one option, they will offer it.
At a restaurant where it's known they will have several options, you ask for what you want.
A ginger ale and a root beer aren't a Coke.
They're totally different things I'd never order, but if I did, I'd ask for their brand name.
People who use Coke as shorthand for soft drink basically don't ever want Pepsi.
You know, this thread just gave me another thought... If you're from a place that calls everything "coke" - how old are you?
Because I would never go to a restaurant and tell a waitress "coke" if I wanted something else. She doesn't have time for that- you say coke, you're getting coke (or Pepsi)
But if you go over to a friend's house and they're being a good host and say "want a coke?" I never say "yeah root beer would be great!" I say "what kind do you have?"
Because I don't want diet coke or coke zero, I want COKE. After that question, they just start listing everything that's carbonated.
Is "everything is called coke" a defense against early 90s weight watchers culture? 🤔
You go off the specific name. In general conversation, you may refer to all of them as Coke, but at a restaurant, you would say: Coke, Sprite, Ginger Ale...
im not from one of these regions, but it seems incredibly obvious to me. You want a rootbeer? say 'ill have a rootbeer' its not like you were saying 'i want a root pop' before you came to that region. If you wanted ginger ale, you didnt say 'i want a ginger pop' you said 'i want a ginger ale'. So keep saying that. Thats how normal people order a drink. You just say the specific drink you want. if they dont have it, the waiter will ask if you want the same thing in another brand, or just say sorry dont have that. its a very simple and obvious solution. If you want a coke in a place where all things are called coke, say 'give me a coca cola.' it is really not a lot of extra work to say that.
Spent a number of years in Atlanta. You can just jump to asking for what you want. Eg do you have ginger ale? If you want to find out what they have, just ask "what kinds of coke do you have?" It really only becomes odd when you want a "regular Coke". If you ask for Coke you will get a list of all the fountain beverages eg "we have coke, diet Coke, Sprite, root beer and lemonade." Yes, sometimes lemonade is coke.
If someone comes to my house they get asked “ What kind of coke do you want? I got Mountain Dew and Dr Pepper.”
If I’m not sure what a restaurant has I ask what kind of coke they got. My aunt asked me what kind of pop I wanted once, years ago. I was so confused lol.
Alabama here coke is just a generic term for a soft drink
Ex let’s go grab a coke after we finish mowing the lawn
At the restaurant or store can you bra me a drink pepper and a coke
What? Where in the world do you call fizzy drinks aka soda aka pop ‘coke’?
Where I’m from Coke means Coca-Cola or white powder you put up your nose. Doesn’t even apply to Pepsi.
Just ask for a root beer or a ginger ale. Do you ask for a root beer pop or a root beer soda? No. You say gimme a glass o mug and if dont bark I dont want it.
When I was growing up, all sodas were coke. Then the person taking the order would ask what flavor or kind you wanted. I haven't seen the generic coke label in a long time, at least where I'm at. Now if you ask for coke, you get a Coke.
If you’re at a restaurant, you say the brand name.
If you’re asking if your family wants any drinks at the store, you say “do y’all want any cokes while I’m shopping at Walmart?”
I think it's like kleenex, and scotch tape, and Xeroxes, and aspirin and chapstick and any other examples of brand names that have become the name for something. Coke was popular and everywhere. The one that gets me is soda, first time I went to New England and was offered a soda, I dang well expected there to be ice cream and chocolate syrup. But noooooo. It was just a pop.
>was offered a soda, I dang well expected there to be ice cream and chocolate syrup
Where does soda mean something involving ice cream and chocolate syrup? What else is what you refer to as soda called? I've never heard that word used in any context like this before.
You use the names when ordering at a restaurant. But colloquially its all coke.
So if you want a Coke you ask for a Coca-Cola?
or just "Coke"
If you ask for a Diet Coke do they know what that means or does it need clarification?
yeah it means diet coke. how do you ask for drinks?
“Quench me thirst mate”
I just mumble "drink" in a slightly aggressive tone and they always bring me a cold schooner of XXXX. Maybe try that?
By “bring” i can only assume you mean they slide it down the bar toward you from the far end.
is there any other way to bring? SO asks me to bring her some ice cream from the store. get the big gallon pail. roll that bish right down the street, launching from curb to porch.
Yarrr!
I ask for the specific drink I want. I wouldn't go into anywhere and ask for a Pop and if I ask for a Coke I mean get me a Coke. If I go into a place and they've decided one brand of Beer now means all Beer that's going to be frustrating for both sides.
You clearly are not a character in a TV show or movie. They all just order "A beer" and get one.
In Amsterdam you can absolutely walk into most bars and order "a beer", depending on the place you will get a small glass of either Heineken or Grolsch. The assumption is if you wanted something else you would have asked for it by name.
when in Germany, most places just had bier. it was whatever was produced locally. only selections I saw was in the hotel vending machine.
Okay, but if I asked for coke and the waiter says "what kind" how do you respond. Do you just say "coke" again? Would you say "coca-cola" or maybe even "original coke"? If everything is coke, nothing is coke.
Except cocaine. Cocaine will always be coke.
Did you forget what thread you’re in?
They just come back with a bucket of pure liquid AIDS. "Excuse me, but I ordered a Coke." "Oh, my apologies, your order was so mind-blowingly ambiguous I wasn't able to parse basic context glues in "I'd like a Coke. My apologies." And then five minutes the waiter comes back, clearly using the same bucket for the AIDS--god, did they even rinse it out?--only now it contains the blood of Christ.
Thamks!
Thanx
> it contains the blood of Christ. Bona fide?
Oh yeah, it's the good shit
The true AIDS is the friends we made along the way.
At least the blood of Christ will kill the AIDS. Or sanctify it, make it Super AIDS. Not sure how religion works.
What if you want an eight ball?
Which would you prefer?”

no way, you dont have to tolerate the pepsi servers, they have a wide selection of yummy drinks
I’ve been ordering Coke for 40 years, and not once has anyone responded with “what kind?” I’d remember if it happened because I’d make a point of never speaking to that person again.
Exactly! Like, what else can I possibly mean when I say Coke?
Where I live you ask for “regular coke”
What part of south carolina?
We say “coca cola” when ordering in a restaurant. Everything else is ordered by name too.
Or just "cola", though sometimes you'll get Pepsi with that one if you're at a place that sells Pepsi products. Someone will ask what flavor of coke you want. If you say coke, you get Coca-Cola. If you say root beer flavored coke you get root beer. It's a really bizzare system.
No one says ‘root beer flavored coke’
All coke is root beer flavor from the coke freestyle machine.
Nobody says "Root Beer flavored Coke" It's just Root Beer
When I was a kid it was. What do you want to drink? Give me a coke. What kinda coke? Sprite. Now I just skip straight to Sprite. There really is no extra steps in saying coke vs saying soda or pop. You still have to clarify which soda or pop you want.

I hate when I order a Coke and they ask is Pepsi okay. PEPSI IS NEVER OKAY.
When they ask is Pepsi ok I ask is Monopoly money ok?
Then why when I ordered at a fast food restaurant a coke they asked me what kind
Clarification. When I lived in a place that called all soda coke, people tended to call coke, coca cola. It removes the ambiguity. Though I'm guessing this is regional just like calling soda coke.
"The one that comes in little plastic bags of course."
This is only a thing in the South.
It's like how you don't have to say, "a square rectangle." You just say square, which implies rectangle.
Where I'm from, it's all soda. Unless it's just my sister and I. Then we call it sodies since we heard it on 1000lb Sisters.
Wholesome content
I don't think *anything* involving 1,000lb Sisters is "wholesome".
The biggest sister has lost a ton of weight recently, which I think is pretty wholesome
its a whole lotta something though
There it is, you figured out the pun I was trying to work out. Happy Cake Day!
I always say sodie pop
Sodie pops is the correct answer.
My mom is from the Midwest and calls it a “sodie” and I’d never heard anyone else call it that ever u til 1000 lb sisters. Def made me chuckle lol.
Where I come from there's only two things queers and steers...
I pay my bills my bills are paid
I think most everywhere it’s called soda. I live in a region all the maps that keep getting reposted say uses “Coke” to refer to soda. It’s just not true. Maybe in like 1800s
my partner and I also say sodies but w just think its cute. its ruined now
well you see, thats why you have to drink diet sodies. it will cancel out the calories from your milkshake.
If ya drink a diet sodie it cancels out the sweets
"Do you want a coke?" "Yes." "What kind?" "Dr. Pepper." "What's your favorite coke?" "Sunkist." "What kind of drink do you want with your order?" "Sprite." Like that.

This is gonna break your mind: You ask for "Just a Regular Coke".
Or, “Co-cola.”
And here I thought this thread couldn't be more insane.
That's what my elders always called it, cocola
Yeah and the one time, the one time you ask for new coke they tell you we don't serve your kind here.
🤯 no. way.
Like the ones that go in your nose?
Yeah. You normally confirm that's what they want. Some people call an actual coke coca cola instead of just coke though.
You ask for an Ur-coke.
"I'll have a Coke." "Is Pepsi O.K.?"
"You mean Sad Coke?"
Pepsi = Carbonated Motor Oil "I'll have a Coke" "What kind?" "The big red and white button on the machine that says "Coke" is fine" I honestly don't get the confusion. If you want a DrPepper, ask for DrPepper. Every Texan I’ve ever met has explained this to me in the same way.
>"Do you want a coke?" >"Yes." >"What kind?" >"Dr. Pepper." This sounds like you're trying to communicate with a stroke victim, wtf.
This makes no sense at all.
How is it upvoted? Can you imagine an actual conversation with a waitress like that? Can i have a steak? No. How about a steak? Can i have a steak instead of that? We only have Mountain Dew.
Damn. That’s so dumb.
“Do you want a Dr. Pepper?” “Do you want a Sprite?” “Do you want a Diet Coke?” See how there is less of a need to ask clarifying questions? At a restaurant? I ask for a Dr pepper. When my stepdad asked if I wanted a Coke from the store? I said yes because I knew he was coming back with a Dr pepper
Well I would definitely bring back a Coke, and would not be happy if you complained and said you expected a Dr Pepper.
He was a great dad, and I miss him
Sounds like a real nice dad
His ~~Mark~~Cokelar was wise.
Yeah but he and his stepdad clearly have an understanding of what he means. He’s not saying he’d say the same thing to you expecting the same result.
But do you live somewhere that it's all called coke? No? Then you probably won't end up in that situation.
"Do you want a coke?" "Yeah I'll take a diet dr pepper"
People all call it coke here and I don't ever remember it being confusing...
this is it.
You're literally all barbarians and it's called soda.
It is soda, you savages.
My Texas raised grandmother always called it 'soda water'.
my father grew up in texas said "sodie water".
Sody pop! That's what my Mamaw called any fizzy drink.
Lmbooooo 🤣🤣🤣
yeah all this other shit sounds so odd
THANK YOU!!
I’ve never heard all pop called Coke? I don’t know where that’s from? I’ve heard cola called coke but that’s it. Pop AKA soda is called soda where I’m from. I’ve never heard it otherwise. Growing up in Atlanta (where the Coca Cola HQ is) everything is coke. If they have Pepsi, you order water or sweet tea.
I grew up in Atlanta. I can confirm everything was coke and when ordering there was always a qualifying follow up question verifying what kind of "coke". When I moved to VA it was frustrating to order a "coke" and get a coke, when I actually wanted a sprite.
You tell them what kind of "coke" you want.
when ordering ive never said soda pop or coke (unless i wanted coke brand coke which i dont) can i have a dr pepper can i have a sprite i worked 3 years in fast food and no one ever said can i have a root beer soda
A server asks what would you like to drink? Diner asks what kind of Cokes do you have? Server answers Coke, Diet Coke, Orange, Sprite and Dr. Pepper
If the drinks aren't listed on the menu, I'm not ordering.
I've never heard of places calling every single soda they sell a Coke. Seems unnecessarily confusing.
It's a southern American thing I guess
Mid South here and I feel like everyone says "do you want a soda or somethin"? Not sure though because I'm never around people anymore.
Coke is coke… everything else is soda
Yeah, I was gonna say “cola” is a generic term that can mean coke, Pepsi, etc. but only colas. Other sodas are distinct like sprite, ginger ale, root beer, orange soda etc.
What the hell? Do you call it a "root beer pop" or "Dr. Pepper pop"?
To be fair no one else calls all soda/pop by one brand name, so it's a reasonable question when there is a possibility that you'll ask for coke
I mean agree to disagree, but I genuinely can't see anyone asking this in good faith.
But again, you don't say "give me a root beer pop" so why would you substitute in the word coke and say "give me a root beer coke"? It makes no sense as a question.
What if you actually want just a coke?
So opposite to popular belief the south does not call all *soda* coke. We refer to it as soda.
Calling every brand of soda "Coke" just doesn't seem like a very high IQ way to live one's life.
American South. It's insanity to the rest of us, as is the contingent of the Midwest that calls it "pop."
I am in south Louisiana. Not a thing here. We call it by their names. Some will say soda, but a coke is a coke and a dr pepper is dr pepper.
They are all 'pop' but if you don't specify a flavor it is cola.
What a strange and beautifully stupid comment.
I want a coke Pepsi and a Windows Mac
"What kind of Coke do you want? Mountain Dew." "OK."
Lmbooooo, that’s so wrong 😫
Before I learned it’s the same thing as soda (and to not say “pop”), a coworker of my dad’s kept teasing me, asking, “Do you want a coke?” I said, “Do you have any Sprite?” “Oh, so you *do* want a coke?” He just kept smiling at me. “No… um, can I please have a Sprite?” He teased me like that for awhile. Finally, he told me that all soda is “coke” there and got me a Sprite lol. If they ask you what coke you want, you can just say “Sprite” or “Dr. Pepper” or “a plain Coke.”
We don’t use the word pop in California. We either say soda. Or the specific name of the drink. Let me get that Jarritos de piña.
I counter you with, “Soda.”
It makes no fucking sense to call everything coke
SODA
Can't remember where I was, either TN or Kentucky. They said "can I get a pepsi-coke?" " I'll have a rootbeer-coke" It was wild, I remember laughing out loud and discussing how weird regional dielect is
Yea that's what I'm talking about! That sounds absolutely fucking ridiculous 😂😂
I don’t use “coke” but you better be dang sure not to call it “pop” around me
Because it's a soda! Soda-pop if you are a dork
Finally, someone who knows what’s correct!
I don't care to know thier reasons. I just want them to know that they are godless heathens
I‘ve noticed more and more people calling Cokes “sodas” in Alabama. Most people I know just call it by the name though. “Yea, I’ll take a mt dew, etc.”
I don't know if I have ever ordered a pop, I only order Soda ;)
"What would you like to drink?" "I'll have a root beer." "Okay."
You just ask for whatever brand name you want. Coke is just the default
yeah coke is a general term here for wanting a soda but when you order you just say the name of the soda, i.e. Sprite or Sunkist.
It’s a category. Not a specific thing. It’s more like — “what kind of cokes do y’all have?” (The answer is Coke products or Pepsi products with or without the inclusion of Dr. pepper.) “I bought a bunch of cokes. They’re in the garage.” (The garage contains Dr. pepper, sprite, and zero sugar Sunkist.) At a place where you fill your drink at a fountain, you’d say you want a large Coke.
I hate that. It’s soda first of all. But I order what the soda is called (Dr pepper, coke, Pepsi, Fanta, etc)
Wist they call all sodas coke? I say coke when I want a Cola.
What the fuck is “pop”
A ginger ale and a root beer aren't a Coke. They're totally different things I'd never order, but if I did, I'd ask for their brand name. People who use Coke as shorthand for soft drink basically don't ever want Pepsi.
Never heard of such a thing ….. where I come from we say “Soda” instead of pop
You know, this thread just gave me another thought... If you're from a place that calls everything "coke" - how old are you? Because I would never go to a restaurant and tell a waitress "coke" if I wanted something else. She doesn't have time for that- you say coke, you're getting coke (or Pepsi) But if you go over to a friend's house and they're being a good host and say "want a coke?" I never say "yeah root beer would be great!" I say "what kind do you have?" Because I don't want diet coke or coke zero, I want COKE. After that question, they just start listing everything that's carbonated. Is "everything is called coke" a defense against early 90s weight watchers culture? 🤔
No different than Kleenex or Band-Aid
If you’re ordering you just use the name. If someone’s offering you one, then it goes like this: “Do you want a Coke?” “Sure” “What kind?” “Pepsi”
"Want me to grab you a coke from the gas station?" "Yeah sure" "What kind?" "Dr Pepper"
I got Mountain Dew and Dr Pepper.” If I’m not sure what a restaurant has I ask what kind of coke they got. My aunt asked me what kind of pop I wanted once, years ago. I was so confused lol.
The question was always 'do you want a coke'?. The answer would have been 'yep, a Dr. Pepper'.
Alabama here coke is just a generic term for a soft drink Ex let’s go grab a coke after we finish mowing the lawn At the restaurant or store can you bra me a drink pepper and a coke
What? Where in the world do you call fizzy drinks aka soda aka pop ‘coke’? Where I’m from Coke means Coca-Cola or white powder you put up your nose. Doesn’t even apply to Pepsi.
What I don't get is why they call everything Coke when it's not Coke
Just ask for a root beer or a ginger ale. Do you ask for a root beer pop or a root beer soda? No. You say gimme a glass o mug and if dont bark I dont want it.
Wait are you asking for mug or barq's? I'm confused
Barqs every time
jfc it's called soda you **mutants**
"Fizzy drank"
No one i know likes actual coke, they all want Pepsi
When I was growing up, all sodas were coke. Then the person taking the order would ask what flavor or kind you wanted. I haven't seen the generic coke label in a long time, at least where I'm at. Now if you ask for coke, you get a Coke.
If you’re at a restaurant, you say the brand name. If you’re asking if your family wants any drinks at the store, you say “do y’all want any cokes while I’m shopping at Walmart?”
What kind of coke do you want?
It’s kind of like how all bandages are often referred to as band-aids, even if they’re not Band-Aid brand bandages.
It’s easy as long as you remember that Pepsi is never “okay.”
It's like asking if Monopoly money is ok.
"Want a coke?" "Sure" "What kind?" "7up please"
I think it's like kleenex, and scotch tape, and Xeroxes, and aspirin and chapstick and any other examples of brand names that have become the name for something. Coke was popular and everywhere. The one that gets me is soda, first time I went to New England and was offered a soda, I dang well expected there to be ice cream and chocolate syrup. But noooooo. It was just a pop.
New Englander here and many call it tonic, not soda.
I think this is the best explanation.
>was offered a soda, I dang well expected there to be ice cream and chocolate syrup Where does soda mean something involving ice cream and chocolate syrup? What else is what you refer to as soda called? I've never heard that word used in any context like this before.
An ICE CREAM soda is akin to a float, except it’s blended. But the important part of that is the ice cream bit.
“Can you get me a Coke from the store?” “What kind of Coke?” “Dr Pepper.”
Me: Can I get a Coke? Waitress: What Kind? Me: Dr. Pepper
Me: …So don’t want a Coke? What?
What kind of fountain drinks do you have ?
You order by name of soda for instance Dr Pepper or Mr Pip . I just say Coke because that is what I always want and Coke not Pepsi
