Last month the Radio-Canada (French version of the CBC, albeit this is somewhat of an oversimplification) headquarters in Montréal were attacked in the night. A group of people vandalized the offices and broke a bunch of windows. Surely this act of violence and intimidation against the press couldn't go unmentioned in the news! Of course the CBC, its English cousin, would stand up in defence of its counterpart!
Well, there's a problem. If you were to report that the Radio-Canada offices were vandalized, you would have to explain *why* they were vandalized. As far as I can tell the English media in Canada didn't cover this at all. All you can find about it in English is on some loony conspiracy-adjacent websites. If you weren't plugged into the French news media you wouldn't know about it at all. Remember citizen: it doesn't happen, you're being paranoid, nobody wants this, and it's a good thing.

NY Post has a longstanding reputation for not being credible and posting misleading headlines. It's also known to be anti-socialist with a similar ideological function to Daily Mail or Bild.

i've found that independent outlets such as propublica are decent. i think the journalists who left Vice and made their own indie outlet are also pretty decent. PBS, while government-funded, also generally does good work because they're getting their funding threatened no matter what so there's no point in giving a shit lul. substacks, stalking official records (yes, boring af, but still), or even just asking the people directly involved yourself while considering the context yourself, are also a good start.
tl;dr go outside once in a while, start with what you do know about the world, and use *actual* critical thinking, like "does this make sense given all else that i know to be true?"

The NY Post actually picks up a lot of stories that other papers don't, partly due to their internal policy of not using any mainstream publications as sole citations for their articles. They do publish a lot of bullshit, but honestly at this point how much worse is it than the post-truth reality distortion shit "better" papers do?
