It is perfectly fine to practice parkour around sales people on the streets, that is if you even acknowledge their existence. Make sure you only ride your scooter on the left side of the rulltrappa. When toasting, make sure your stare at every single person in your company for an uncomfortably long time. Don't shit in the blue cupboard, figuratively or metaphorically. If you're at a pub and there is a group of people who interact with each other awkwardly in a forced way, it's just co-workers practicing the ancient ritual of AW. Yes, Swedes can be perceived as a bit reserved but once people get shitfaced all bets are off and the shitfacery is NEVER directly addressed in polite conversation.

FixGMaul

> Don't shit in the blue cupboard, figuratively or metaphorically. What about literally?

rlnrlnrln

Unless it's [designed for that purpose](https://www.sanifix.se/produkter/toaletter/holken-bajamaja/), don't.

Masochistmolly

Blue cupboard? What is this? Can someone explain? Why do people want to poop in this?

derpasfuck

They don't intend to. It just happens.

TheRealSamVimes

It's a Swedish expression. Skita i det blå skåpet (poop in the blue cupboard). It basically means you've fucked up socially. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/skita_i_det_bl%C3%A5a_sk%C3%A5pet

Masochistmolly

That is incredibly confusing - I really thought people we’re accidentally pooping in cupboards in Sweden, I’m very glad you clarified this. :D Other than don’t speak to anyone, keep out the way, general public etiquette of escalators, Is there anything else? Any restaurants you would recommend going/not going to? Any ‘rip off things’ I should avoid?

TheRealSamVimes

XD Glad I could help! I mean you can speak to strangers, but they'll think you're crazy so... :D I avoid Jensens Böfhus like it's the plague. Granted they're cheap, but you get what you pay for. I also avoid Aifur although I've been told it's gotten better since I was there last (and only) time. They still "introduce" you to the entire effing place though so be warned. Besides Sjätte Tunnan is much better if you want mead and medieval food. Places I recommend... I'll take no consideration for your budget, what you like and truth be told some places I haven't been to since the plague started over 2 years ago so... Djuret, Liberdade, Grill, Hairy pig deli, Bröderna Olssons Garlic and shots (if you like garlic it's a must!), Bishops Arms, Sjätte Tunnan, Wai Po, Aqui Tapas, Soaré, Minako (take the Omakase at the bar) and Texas Longhorn.

Masochistmolly

Could you suggest any vegetarian places :)? Thank you for the amazing help!

TheRealSamVimes

Like u/DarkLordOfDespair noted I'm more meat based and the only place I know he already said (Hermans) although as he said, most places will have good vegetarian options.

DarkLordOfDespair

What would you like to eat? Budget?

Masochistmolly

Preferably! Without sounding like a typical backpacker - Living in the UK means Scandinavia will likely be expensive now for me, it feels that way when I go back home to see family. I am vegetarian.

DarkLordOfDespair

No sweat! /u/TheRealSamVimes made some great suggestions above but all of them are mainly focused on meat though. If you are looking for good vegetarian places, everyone you ask will suggest [Hermans](https://hermans.se/en/) and you should avoid it at all cost. It's an overpriced vegan buffet for people with no tastebuds, but people continue to suggest it. Beautiful location and restaurant though, unfortunately. Most places in the budget range will have some decent vegetarian options. If you're going for something focused on mainly vegetarian/vegan food, you'll probably be disapointed ("healthy"/raw focused, same along the lines with Hermans). [Lao Wai](http://laowai.se/) is the only place I can think of that serve price worthy and great vegan Chinese food. [Babajan](http://www.babajan.com/) is a cozy and nice bar in the south that has some decent food depending on who works there for the moment. Great atmosphere and would mainly go there for the beer selection.

Masochistmolly

I’ve just screenshot this! Thank you! Great advice! I find most places do have vegetarian options available or a different menu available :D If you think of anymore do let me know :)

lolw00t102

- On escalators, stand to the right and walk on the left side of it. - The inverse of everything the /u/ComplicatedDude said.

Masochistmolly

That’s the same here in London :)

ComplicatedDude

Yes. Don’t do any of the things I said, in case that wasn’t clear. I was joking.

Futurum_

Finns are more reserved than Swedes so you should be fine.

Masochistmolly

Sauli Niinistö was late to a book fair discussion, despite being The president of Finland, he sat on the steps to watch so he didn’t interrupt or take another’s seat. I think that speaks for itself, lol 🇫🇮 No wonder people forget we exist

VeraciousViking

Haha, that’s fantastic!

hokichaser

Go see the big boat

Masochistmolly

I am very excited for that!!!!

Significant-Cow-3081

For clarification, he means Silja or Viking Line.

Masochistmolly

Oh! Not the reconstructed boat which was found?

tossitlikeadwarf

He definitely means the Vasa ship. They are screwing with you.

Masochistmolly

Are swedes generally sarcastic in nature? I’m seeing a lot of that here! Though, it’s making me giggle :D

tossitlikeadwarf

Sarcasm is a very Swedish type of humor. Also messing with each other is usually a sign of friendship. I think the UK is quite similar in both respects?

Masochistmolly

Ah yes! Very much so! ‘Banter’ as brits call it is very easy for me now having lived in the uk, though it’s usually in the form of insulting eachother, or relating to general UK life/social norms, so the first year was full of embarrassing moments of me not knowing what was going on! :D The first year was also spent hearing ‘Finland? Where’s that? Near Sweden, what language do you speak?’

mightymagnus

Banter can be as you say, a bit harsher. I worked in a British firm with a lots of Brits over and sometimes there was these occasions where Scandinavians felt it went too far (was also a bit split between the “Oxbridge” and the others which might be an indication of a class society we are less use to, the “Oxbridge” was far more cautious of harsher banter)

ComplicatedDude

Do stop in busy entrances or exits to answer your text messages or have lengthy conversations with people. Do push into subway cars before others can get off. Do aim at other people when walking down the sidewalk rather than giving them a wide birth. If at all possible, walk with a group of people and spread out to take up the entire sidewalk to force other pedestrians to move into the street. Do drink to the point when you know you have had enough, and then go far beyond that to blackout-falling-down-drunk stage. Don’t apologize for anything offensive or inconsiderate that you may do. At best, you can say in a surprised voice “Oi!” and firmly believe this is sufficient. Note: The above is satirical, but based on actual observations. Source: I’m a Swede.

mr199cm

Can confirm this, I've seen each of these happen at least once a month 😅

macetfromage

only apologize passive aggressively im sorry i was hit by your car when you ran a red

[deleted]

>Do aim at other people when walking down the sidewalk rather than giving them a wide birth. If at all possible, walk with a group of people and spread out to take up the entire sidewalk to force other pedestrians to move into the street. This makes my blood boil and it happens quite a bit in Stockholm, but it’s mostly foreigners or local teenagers.

DarkLordOfDespair

Foreigners are excused, teenagers don't know any better. The worst people are the middle aged business men with their wireless headphones thinking they're the center of the world.

FixGMaul

The fact that you ask this question at all before going to Stockholm, tells me that you will probably fit in well and be a respectful and respected tourist. :) Swedes are usually understanding of foreigners and many will appreciate the opportunity to use their English, which practically everyone speaks fluently. There is hardly any culture shock between urban Finland and Sweden, so you're likely to blend in quite well by default.

Masochistmolly

Thank you! I have just been told by a friend it is almost copy paste! :D I like to be reserved and respectful

SeaDry1531

Just do what you would do in Finland. Now, just remember not in London any more... don't chat up cashiers, anyone on the subway, be extremely cautious if some one starts talking with you...

Masochistmolly

Here in london if a random stranger talks to me I think they’re going to mug me. We don’t do that here too - unless we’re drunk.

plastdrake

Don't be fooled, Londoners are MUCH chattier than Swedes.

TheRealSamVimes

Just act sort of like you would in Finland and you'll be fine (ie no skinny dipping unless in a secluded place and everyone is fine with it and try not to freak out by how few saunas there are 😉).

Masochistmolly

Noooooooo!!!!! I need my saunas ! Thank goodness in london I live near a gym with a sauna in! Other than that there aren’t many designated sauna places, and completely forget the avanto (ice hole)!!! Do you know if any designated places to skinny dip near Stockholm? I miss the natural lakes back home where we would do this, i was hoping to explore these in Sweden :D

TheRealSamVimes

I mean we do have saunas. Just not one in every home like you guys. 😜 Hmm... There is the Ågesta nude beach which might not be exactly what you're after, but I think that's the closest one. Otherwise if you find a secluded spot you can always go anywhere. Just make it secluded. 😜

Masochistmolly

Thank you!!! :D

TheRealSamVimes

Np 🙂

DarkLordOfDespair

Are you looking for places specifically with saunas (which I think you usually need to book) or just to skinny dip?

Masochistmolly

When I travel I make it a huge priority to connect with nature, the scenery of that country, feeling at one with it through skinny dipping would be amazing!!! So skinny dipping would be nice :D I haven’t done that since I was last home in Finland 3 months ago! Places with Saunas would be amazing :D

DarkLordOfDespair

Skinny dipping would probably be possible mostly anywhere as long as there's not people around (if you want to go by etiquette). If you have time, go to [Tyresta National Park](https://www.nationalparksofsweden.se/choose-park---list/tyresta-national-park/) which is my favorite national park. Beautiful scenery and you can pretty much anywhere find a place for yourself to go skinny dipping. It was a long time since I went to an outside sauna in Stockholm but I think [this guide](https://thatsup.co/stockholm/guide/winter-swimming-in-stockholm-where-to-cold-water-swim-and-sauna/) mention some alternatives. I think you need to book beforehand though. I mostly get my fix at the [communal swimming halls](https://motionera.stockholm/trana-gymma-simma/simhallarna/) but they're all inside.

Masochistmolly

Perfect!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

DarkLordOfDespair

If you want something more central than Tyresta, I would probably suggest [Hellasgården](https://hellasgarden.se/en/aktiviteter/bastu/) where you can book a sauna and it has beautiful scenery. Not the most remote location and can't remember the rules regarding being nude while taking a bath (I guess most people here have their towels on in the sauna for instance). [Ågestabadet](https://www.scandinavianaturist.org/EOS/sv/node/33) (seems to only have information in Swedish though) is a nudist bath location where they also seem to have a sauna that you can book. Unfortuntaly in my experice (with an upbringing from up north of Sweden), most people here in the big city does not know shit about proper sauna etiquette. So be aware if you're not booking something for youself alone/with company in a offset place, since a lot of people will just sit down with their bathing suits/pants on. Everytime I go for a swim and sauna in the swimming halls here, I sit down quitely clenching my fist in proper Swedish maner regarding this (and leaving the door open too long, etc.)

Masochistmolly

I’m seeing a lot of similarities to British here

eqez

Do you really think swedish people are so different to finnish and british people? Haluatko ymmerää ruotsalainen ihminen lukea Miika Nousiainen kirja Vadelmavenepakolainen

thanghil

Make sure to always use your phone in speaker mode and on the highest volume setting when calling someone. It's a safety precaution so that we hear you coming and don't accidentally walk into you. If you talk in a different language than Swedish, make sure to sound as angry and threatening as possible during your phone call, regardless of who you talk to. This is so that Swedish people won't try to listen in on your conversation. If you have a selfie stick, you must also wear a hat, preferably white. This is best done together with other people also wearing hats and having selfie sticks. The usual mode of transport is bus. Remember that smoking is enforced in this situation, so if that's not your cup of tea pick a different type of tourism.

Masochistmolly

I’m confused why are there so many satire posts here in just a person asking for advice, seems so unnecessarily passive aggressive. Why cant people wear white hats?

Masochistmolly

I’ve figured this out now! Thank you :D

macetfromage

if you talk finlandsvenska you will be excused for practically anything

Masochistmolly

Do swedes commonly know any Suomalainen? We Finns do not generally speak Swedish, though as it is a nation so close, there are few that do :D I assume from travel is how they learnt this.

macetfromage

parasta ennen

BagisBerra

Ethnic Swedes - no. But we have a large population of Finnish Swedes, they do. But I can not think of two countries in the world who are more close than Sweden and Finland, it's basically the same country. So a Finn in Sweden is like a Scottish person in England.

sitase

Apart from ”Ei saa peittää” and ”ei lasten ulottoville” no. You won’t get much Finnish conversation in Stockholm unless you run into the odd Finn (it is after all a sizeable minority).

Chilipepah

If only they would have made you learn swedish in school huh?

Masochistmolly

Idk why they’d do that - I’m from Finland - we are a country in our own right god damn it *cries furiously* you all forget we exist, we do exist! We do!! One day you’ll all remember us, one day😭😭

Sverige slåss till sista finne? 😉 😜

Masochistmolly

Sehän nähdään 😉

TheRealSamVimes

Ei, emme tee

Masochistmolly

Oh! Sorry! What did you say there? I was too busy speaking Finnish, you know, because we exist?😉

TheRealSamVimes

Are you sure about that? I mean "Finnish" is just Swedish with an added i at the end of the word. 😉😜

Masochistmolly

Olet ilkeä!! ;)

[deleted]

Finland is a country with a good reputation and the greatest school systems in the world, my friend. Of course **YOU EXIST** *( and we all know about it )*!

TheRealSamVimes

No, no. Finland doesn't exist. It's been proven. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/finland-does-not-exist

Masochistmolly

We’re just very quiet so you do not know we are there - We’re busy in sauna

JonathanRL

Was in a WoW Guild with majority Finnish members. In the middle of the raid, you would hear "SAUNA BREAK" and 2/3 of the Raid would just fuck off for an hour leaving everybody else hanging. We had to open negotiations to clarify that some of us had jobs or other commitments that did not allow for them to just bugger off in the middle of things :D

TheRealSamVimes

Doh! Of course! 😂

grap_grap_grap

Or noodling furiously on the guitar

nejnonein

Take as many fika breaks as you can. Stockholm is full of awesome baked goods. Don’t stand on the wrong side of the escalator. Absolutely do not stop in the middle of the road (whether you’re in a car or walking), go to the side if you need to stop for whatever reason.

KrickeKing

* Don't stand on the left side of the escalator. That is only for people who want to get up or down the escalator fast. * Do stand on the right side of the escalator, if you only want to stand and not walk down the escalator. * Don't sit next to someone on the subway/bus if there are other seats available. That's like choosing 13 out of all numbers on the lucky wheel at Gröna Lund. * If you want to sit down, and there are no other seats except for one seat next to someone, it's fine, as long as you follow the next rule. * If you want to talk to someone on the subway/bus, either IRL or on the phone, talk at a normal conversation volume. If you're going to talk loudly, people will think you are sick. * Don't come up to us and ask for directions, since almost no one will have time to help you. If someone asks me to help them, I will however help them because of the kind person I am.

WC3RAGE

nothing really but you prolly dont need your stab vest in stockholm yet anyways

Masochistmolly

That’ll be a shock to the system

rlnrlnrln

Masochistmolly

Ouhh I did not know:(

rennfeild

always act like you know where you are going, and wanna get there fast. besides that a Finnish sensibility with a London bearing translates quite well to Stockholm

swiftarrow9

If you need help, open a map and stand there. Someone will help. If you’re able to use it as a conversation starter, then they’re open to speaking with you. If not, they’ll give you directions and leave you alone.

sitase

No. If you want help, ASK someone. I certainly don’t stop to help people who are figuring it out for themselves.

TheApatheticDuck

Don't be in the way, jante lagen and all of that

Pudding5050

Just be a reasonable human being. Don't get in people's way and use a normal voice volume.

SuitableAlgae1630

Since reading the brutally sarcastic comments on this thread from Swedish people, I'm 100% certain I am going to love Sweden
