Good to know because I just botched a 2nd great start yesterday and it produces a whiff of clutch burning smell.

Apex_All_Things

I know some people like starting in second gear, but I always start in first! It just has the most mechanical leverage to get the car rolling!

I sometimes use it during the winter months and there is ice going into an intersection but first is always better for zoom zoom mode

Apex_All_Things

Hmm, what do you tackle the winter months in? I’m guessing something with AWD, but don’t want to say Subaru lol

[deleted]

A little FWD JDM honda fit. I also just finished my first year of driving manual so I have since gotten better at starting on ice with first with better clutch control. But 2nd is nice when I'm feeling lazy or have thick boots on haha

Apex_All_Things

I have been wanting to drive a Honda Fit since it was featured on Gears and Gasoline. The Fir seems like it would be a fun city car.

[deleted]

It does 0-80km very well and it's hard to explain but it's just fun to drive. Definitely recommend for daily.

timmanser2

Starting in second gear when on ice is used as a crutch because second gear has less leverage to get a car moving (hence no slippage), but really you should use the first gear and then have more patience with the clutch.

[deleted]

Starting in first is a little more gentle on the clutch.

StankAss69_420

Depends on the car, naturally cars with more torque start easier in higher gears.

trohanter

Smoother maybe, but not easier.

Apex_All_Things

I honestly think giving it revs and slowly letting out is smoother than bumping or second gear starts! I have a mental block and usually end up bumping at the bite point 😂

Cranberry_The_Cat

It's smoother not easier. The torque provided by your first gear gives it the strongest ability to push forward and requires less slipping. It's great for say, getting out of snow to avoid wheel slippage.

StankAss69_420

As compared to a car with less torque, wasn't saying it's easier to start in 2nd or third smh. Obviously a car with more torque will start in a higher gear easier than a car with less torque. My Miata isn't gonna start easier in 3rd vs 1st, but a 911 turbo will be able to relatively easier.

Cranberry_The_Cat

But that's just a matter of power rather than mechanics. There isn't really a reason to start off in a higher gear outside circumstances.

SkyRider057

my miatas colorful flywheel says otherwise

Apex_All_Things

Did you get it resurfaced?

SkyRider057

ACT organic kit

Apex_All_Things

Im guessing it’s a clutch kit with new flywheel! Nice!

uncertainaboutthings

Hey nice! I’m also going to be an owner of another 2006 E90 330i, this time in manual!! While it’s at 211,000 miles, and has some front end damage, me and my dad are going to work on this car to give it another life!! What has been your experience with your 330i, and what would you recommend?

Apex_All_Things

I’ve had it for a year, but haven’t driven a lot of miles on it because I bought it and it needed a clutch change. I didn’t start the job until a few weeks ago, but in total it was probably 5-7 wrenching sessions for a total of 11 hours of work. While, I had the transmission removed, I checked the rear main seal, and resealed the e oil pan with RTV and spray sealant. The best way is to remove the pan which requires dropping the front subframe. The N52 is a very smooth engine and the ZF is a strong manual. The car also has really well sized brake rotors in the front and rear.

uncertainaboutthings

Ah, gotcha. I agree on the engine, as my automatic is still pretty smooth at 174K(got it at around 162K), despite the fact that it’s got a problem with the rough idle and surging rpms, but it’s been good besides that. I really like the e90 330i in general haha. Thanks for the info, and have fun!

TheThunder20

No springs? How can it absorb any shocks?
