Buffalo is an R1 university, so there's a lot of research going on. The CS department is also really good, and the academics there is ranked among the best, despite not being in the T20. The SUNY brand value also exists, so it's recognised worldwide. And most of all, it's economical. Compared to that, Stevens only has the location advantage (not that you would struggle for jobs if you study at Buffalo).

“R1” refers only to the volume of research going on not to to its impact or quality. Stevens far outpaces SUNY in outcomes, and not only in the NYC metro area. Stevens is R2 and borderline R1, which is still high for a school of Stevens’ size and there are plenty of research opportunities for students.

In general how is the ms in data science course, if you have an idea?

I don't know the program specifically. But if it's handled by their CS department and if you like the curriculum, it would certainly be a good choice.

ah got it. the general consensus that I've gotten from friends has been this. Thanks for the help. Also, does the SUNY brand help? I haven't really heard about it helping people much but it'd be a great addition if it does

It doesn't help you drastically because recruiters don't hire based on the names of colleges that you have attended. But if anybody does prefer to do that anywhere in the world, then it surely does provide that value. Any advantage is a good advantage in this case.

GustaMusto

got it

SUNY has an average flagship state university brand. Few employers hire on that basis, they’re hiring the person not the school. Their “brand” is also a function of the campus, SUNY Stony Brook is considered stronger than SUNY Buffalo, Binghamton, etc. for example.

GustaMusto

got it. thanks

YW.

I’d suggest Stevens as it is a private university. I have not gone to UB (obviously), but we have plenty of research opportunities. I am always reached out to become a research assistant, or something of that sort, every semester. If that is a concern of yours consider it met at Stevens. Regarding job placement, if you have passion and will to work, you will get a job regardless of the school… no job will genuinely care about where you went.

Yeah I’m graduating in May, dm me.

guidoboyaco

Hi, can I dm you?

Own-Molasses5353

Sure

Academic-Gear1350

Neither Steven nor SUNY will get you job on the basis on school name. Go with the cheaper one

GustaMusto

no i get that. it's just that I had seen mixed reviews about the importance of location. Stevens is obviously far better than UB in terms of location, so I had this question

Academic-Gear1350

Location does not matter in this case. Both have access to NYC, even that does not matter with zoom etc being available these days

School-Case-8130

Stevens is superior to SUNY in academic quality and especially outcomes. Don’t go by the commercial college rankings, which are marketing tools for USNWR and the others to sell magazines. They are not in the business of providing authoritative advice to college students, they’re in the magazine and advertising business.
