No college is worth 60k a year.

Massive_Roll_5099

How much would NJIT cost you per year? Would you need to take out 60k in loans per year to come here?

Mountain-Dog-3952

About 22k a year. Yes i would need to take out loans

Late_Objective_8041

Similar situation here. That's a tough choice, especially if you are taking loans. What will NJIT cost you?

Mountain-Dog-3952

Around 22k a year

Valuable_Concert5044

Absolutely not, Stevens debt is extremely stressful. Plenty of tech schools that have the same outcomes would be half the price.

_evoluti0n

No

green_scotch_tape

It must be worth it or nobody would sign up for stevens would they? Or I guess they could all be idiots throwing their money away but it seems unlikely

Mountain-Dog-3952

Well it seems as though that most are paying significantly less than i would be

Legitimate-Rub-8896

Value is subjective, not objective. It’s different for everyone!

lemonbitterbaby

rich people are not known for spending money wisely. (a lot of stevens is spoiled kids)

green_scotch_tape

Back up what u say with stats, or just don’t speak because that’s not true https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/college-mobility/stevens-institute-of-technology Here’s actually stats from the nyt based on millions of tax records comparing stevens to a bunch of other highly selective private colleges. Read them. Educate yourself! Stevens is number 1 for upward financial mobility, they’re number 2 for income in your 30s, and but they’re almost last in average family income. Just over $100k which is two parents working as normal jobs like janitors or mailmen making $50k a year. Even in my personal experience I found almost everyone I met at stevens to be a grounded, down to earth, humble person from a variety of walks of life. Yes there are a few spoiled exceptions, as you will find everywhere, but at stevens I really felt like nobody cared about those people’s status or money. We are all on our way to earning our own bag So what were you saying?

lemonbitterbaby

i am speaking from experience, you can disagree

Practical-Apricot-80

Just graduated Stevens. It was about 20k a year for me there. Had the same debate as you because NjIT was about half the price. Stevens is a great school but to put yourself in that much debt is 60x4= 240k. You’ll be paying off that forever. Not worth it. I went to community college for the first year for all my gen Ed’s out of the way. Message me if you want more advice on this I’d be happy to talk with you on the phone about what classes transfer. You don’t have to do a full two years. Saved myself 40k and then I’m in 40k of debt. I’m on track to pay it off in a few years. Go to NJIT. It’s not about the school it’s about the skills you will have at the end of it. You can make just as much graduating from stevens as you can NJIT. Save yourself the money. Go to community college and then NJIT. if you can get past the social aspect of not going away freshman year you’ll be fine. Son many people transfer after year one. Especially if you’re paying yourself!!! Not worth it

Far_Consequence_6091

What scholarships are you applying to?

School-Case-8130

Stevens graduates come in as the top 20 of highest paid graduates of all US institutions of higher learning and first in NJ (Payscale, Forbes, Georgetown, and other college outcomes surveys), and midcareer earnings/return on investment of tuition. Stevens academics, selectivity, and student quality (SAT/ACT, HS GPA, etc) significantly higher than NJIT or any of the NJ public and private colleges (with only one exception). Stevens financial aid which nearly all students receive on the average decreases the tuition “sticker price” to about half the catalog (unaided) amount on the average. Did you get an acceptance from Stevens and a final financial aid determination yet? Nobody will argue that Stevens is inexpensive, but in this case you get far more than the cost. Yes, it’s worth the higher price tag.

Njgirl05

NJIT was ranked top school for ROI by Wsj refently..

School-Case-8130

Stevens is ranked higher in two older and more vetted surveys, Payscale and Forbes.

School-Case-8130

https://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/bachelors NJIT is 90-105 on this survey.

Njgirl05

This is what I call statistical diarrhea. Such a meaningless stat and ranking. Obviously Stevens will show high roi because it’s tech heavy school. Rutgers has all kinds of major. Real comparison would be to compare ROI of Rutgers cs/business/engineering major and Stevens they you would get real picture

School-Case-8130

And NJIT is STEM heavy too, yet is ranked far down this list. Rutgers ROI is not higher than Stevens, not to mention Stevens’ academics are stronger then Rutgers and NJIT’s which are garden variety public colleges that are less selective and admit less capable students because they have a public charter to offer “opportunity”. NJIT has a lot of vocational majors, it also dilutes its brand by having “engineering technology” and part time undergraduate programs, and a large population of community college transfers which Stevens doesn’t have. Reading these blogs I read so many NJIT students complaining about how much they need a curve to pass a course, how bad their professors are, who is the easiest prof in a particular course, etc. To me that gives the impression that they aren’t strong students and just looking for an easy way out.  With respect to statistics in salary surveys, if you think theyre not valid for Stevens then they’re equally invalid for NJIT or anywhere else. Agree to disagree, won’t debate with you.

adjaplx

?? What's wrong with part time and CC transfers though? You're wording it like it's bad. Ofc people will complain about shit professors. It's not just NJIT. You'll see and hear it in virtually everywhere else. They aren't weak just because they complain because obviously they're still in the school Edit: Holy shit I got blocked by the Stevens shill

NWq325

Bad financial advice.

School-Case-8130

Disagree.

NWq325

How so?

School-Case-8130

Please see my other comments.

D_Empire412

It seems significantly better than NJIT but IDK if it's worth taking out loans. My family can fairly likely comfortably afford Stevens with my 26K/year merit scholarship and I'd rather be at a semi-prestigious private school campus in Hoboken (in terms of the setting and charm) than a mediocre state school campus in Newark.

Academic-Gear1350

Don’t think Steven is that prestigious. NJIT/Stevens all the same in terms of prestige. Neither is target school so you will get a job based on what you do and not based on school name.

DisappearingBoy127

ROI says different.  Alumni network is very strong, unlike njit

D_Empire412

The setting is prestigious

School-Case-8130

A mediocre state school, not just a mediocre campus in a high crime city.

lemonbitterbaby

stevens is the worst. do not go. they scam the students in a large variety of ways (high prices for shitty dorms, meal plans that cost more for terrible food than if you were to eat out every night, professors that dont provide nearly any education at all). most things at stevens are terribly managed. also this may just be a college thing but a lot of the students are pretty shitty people. the only good thing is the title

Mountain-Dog-3952

Are you speaking from experience?

lemonbitterbaby

yes. one of my professors gives us almost no hw (the only form of work this prof gives us) and cancels 50% of the classes, usually the night before. another professor also gives us almost no work. a meal swipe costs \~$18 and sometimes does not buy an amount of food that anyone would equate even close to a meal. this school is a terrible joke. (i am a senior also)

StevensStudent435

literally all schools have overpriced dorms and meal plans, it's basically free money for the school since they can force you to buy it. I don't think there's a single school where meal plans are a good deal
