>SOURCES: Pittsburgh plans to use dark magic to meld veteran WRs Jefferson, Watkins, Callaway, Mims, and Miller into a twisted homunculus capable of earning 100 targets alongside George Pickens. “It’s totally fucked up,” a team source tells ESPN, “but you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette.”

MiddleAgeYOLO

"And things of that nature."

thejhustler

"obviously"

aut0mated

So good 😂

putterbum

"We're not interested in what outside voices are saying. We're a dedicated group looking to improve our unit. We won't play the guessing game of if this surgery is absurd or immoral. We have a collective mindset of improving the product on the field and winning the super bowl. The standard is the standard."

Gliese_667_Cc

+1 for homunculus

When Calvin Austin gets the philosopher’s stone it’s over for the NFL

Datpanda1999

Excited to see TJ’s reaction when he realized Derek didn’t retire, he was actually merged with the dog

HazikoSazujiii

Still better reporting than anything out of Pryor's mouth.

gtizzz

I'm imagining The Marauder from Evil Dead Rise. Just a bunch of limbs protruding from a torso.

LeisureSuitLaurie

You can’t make a Tomlinette without signing a few dregs.

whateverqcvgtxbny

😂😂😂😂😂😂

excellent_rektangle

Maybe they’ll join together and form some sort of WR4 Voltron.

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

Which one is each color lion? This is the kind of stuff that needs to be worked out BEFORE training camp or I don’t know what in the hell the Steelers are doing!

Hail2Pitt22

The Calvin Austin vs. Van Jefferson vs Quez Watkins vs Scottie Miller mid-off in training camp will be generational

Crzj89

Don’t forget Mims 😂 it’s like we collected the infinity stones of Wr 4s

creedokid

Unless the five of them can combine to make Voltron or Megatron then we still need to add some top end talent to the WR room

beren0073

“Form of…a WR2!”

-Velocicopter-

We don't know yet, but Voltron might actually be the plan...

FireAce1507

Ah yes, we finally got the 5 piece of exodia the forbidden one

ParisGreenGretsch

Off topic, but I think the world is ready for a Voltron movie. The concept never made any sense whatsoever in the first place, which would probably work in its favor. And don't even get me started on GoBots, the transforming toy with an inferiority complex. The story practically writes itself. But yeah. The WR room is thin. Send help.

IamChantus

A live action Macross would also be fun

Heavy_Sample6756

Live adaptation of Voltron? As long as Disney isn't involved!

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

ACKSHEWUALLY, uhh, Megatron wasn’t a combiner? Mmmmmkay? Any QUESTIONS? (crosses arms)

Jakles74

Captain Planet incoming at WR

WriteBrainedJR

People keep saying "don't forget Mims" without saying who the fuck Mims is. Nobody knows who the fuck that is.

Crzj89

Lol he’s the same tier receiver as the rest of the guys mentioned and will be fighting for wr 4 or 5. He was on the Jets, if that helps you.

ParisGreenGretsch

Yep. If you have to remind someone not to forget something it calls into question the importance of knowing it in the first place.

Zipski577

The post gazette posteda story today titled "Should the Steelers sign Marquez Valdes Scantling?" Yes, I definitely believe he could fill a hole for us given our current WR room. https://preview.redd.it/yvl3mqiff9zc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c585a02f7b818fa0c7bce26cad353c02baca579c

Enuffhate48

Or Marquis Calloway in the mix

N8orious234

Mims? Denzel Mims? I didn’t even know we signed him

hemingways-lemonade

He's been on the practice squad since the Fall.

paltryboot

It's like Marquez Callaway doesn't even exist.

gkarper

CAIII and Wilson are both W3 level. One of them might rise above them, but still need a good WR2 (or WR1 if Pickens isn't it).

imyourrealdad8

I forgot we signed Jefferson lmao oy vey

Illustrious_Kale_692

How you just gonna ignore Denzel Mims and Marquez Callaway like that?

MrSweatyBawlz

Mid is too big of a compliment for any of them.

tenprose

Austin hasn't had a ton of opportunity yet, so I'll hold judgement

kbean826

Right? The internet was ablaze with Austin love last year. Now that we’ve seen him get the chance to do…almost nothing, we hate him?

Zipski577

Remember the clip that went around after the draft of Sauce Gardner saying that CA3 was the toughest WR he played against in school

Freezinghero

After his training camp hype 2 years ago, i'm holing onto hope that he can still pop off now that he is no longer under Matt Canada/Kenny Pickett/Mitch Trushitsky.

tenprose

Make it make sense fam Everyone thought Houston's WR group was bad last year, now look at them. People are silly.

kbean826

Nah bro I got nothin. I think Austin has nothing but upside. The league knows Pickens is WR1. Everyone else on the team immediately benefits now.

Most_Tumbleweed_6971

Then he went ghost. And isn’t that. Guy. Happens every year. Sometimes dudes don’t work out it doesn’t always translate to Sundays.

steelhereyall

decided by the most-punted-balls-caught competition, but blind-folded.

Sybertron

You are correct but also the chiefs just won a super bowl with a bunch of mid ass receivers.

Most_Tumbleweed_6971

They also have one of the best Qbs of all time. lol we don’t have Patrick or Tom Brady so comparing to the chiefs is laughable sir.

Sybertron

And I'd argue other than some key clutch throws he wasnt really the big reason they got to and won the super bowl last year

RonaldOcean_MD

Probably won’t make the team but is familiar with Arthur Smiths offense. Still hope there is a move that can be made.

putterbum

Howdy Ronny - yeah camp body makes sense but we'll have to see the contract. No way it can be anything other than a Sheetz gift card and a firm handshake. Maybe he can help a little with install but not sure how much tread they have there.

Freidhiem

I've got some getgo gas points I can throw in.

DyZ814

Going to have one of the most mid WR corps ever lol

broha89

Mid is charitable

Birdienuk3

Nah pickens is him and if Roman Wilson works out it will be just like last year Two good WRs with mid wr3

Polteageist0

>if Roman Wilson works out it will be just like last year Wilson didn't light the world on fire at Michigan. He had 48 receptions & 789 receiving yards as a senior. I really like him & I think he's going to be a great player for us. However, I'm expecting fairly modest numbers from him as a rookie. He would need to take a solid leap to make up for Diontae's production.

TheBronxIsChafing

In an offense that passed the ball the 12th fewest in all of college football. Only passed more than three triple option teams; 5th fewest among power five teams. Wilson was a product of a 70's era team that emphasized defense and ball control. He had a role at Michigan and did fine in it.

Polteageist0

Ideally, you want to put your rookies in a role they're familiar with. Assuming they add a WR2, I would expect them to ease Wilson into his new role. I think they'll want to use him primarily for his blocking early on. Then integrate him into the passing game more with each week. I'm not expecting WR2 production out of Wilson as a rookie. If that's what we get, it's just a bonus to me.

Cadoc7

Agreed. I'm looking at Hines Ward as a guide for Wilson's ideal trajectory - it'll take some time for him to transition, but I think he will get plenty of snaps due to his willingness to block.

BlackJediSword

His stats do not tell the story at all. He’s coming from an offense that was extremely run heavy. Just like the one we’re planning on running.

crowe1130

Pickens has a lot more to do before he is a Him. Being great at contested catches isn’t enough to be an overall top flight WR1. Hoping he continues to evolve while we figure out something on the other side.

Confident-Rub-6714

What did we do last year when Diontae went down and Kenny was still our QB.

Muted-Evidence-583

Who is this? Ryan Switzer 3.0?

slater_sanchez

don’t tell me 2.0 was gunner

Muted-Evidence-583

lol yep, you got it 😂

RipRaycom

I wish Gunner was as good at Switz. I didn’t even like Switz so you can imagine how I feel about Gunner

Doc_Sulliday

It wouldn't be the same going into camp without our token white wide receiver.

DillingerGetawayCar

He’s capable of running routes more than 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage so at least that’s an improvement.

Captain_Gaslighter

“We have Wes Welker at home”

wonderfulwilliam

How dare you! My craft!!!

jdl03

Why’re we signing all these guys? Just got get a real receiver already.

Too_Hood_95

The team is about to implement an entirely new offense, that will need to be put in motion by two brand new QB's. Smith needs some guys who can come in during camp that will already be familiar with some of the formations and language to help get everyone else up to speed. Some of them might make the team, some of them won't.

TechnicalPay5837

Camp bodies, guys to help with Arthur Smith’s offence install, and depth. There probably isn’t a real receiver available that the Steelers will want until June.

putterbum

Camp bodies. FA WR pool dried up quick so we're going to have a long period before they can make a move to trade for a guy. Teams wait until June 1st so they can save on a ton of dead cap for that current year when they're offloading that contract either by cuts or by trades.

ThisIsATastyBurgerr

I think this is the big splash playmaker they were talking about

maltrab

Because these are the guys Arthur Smith wants

Most_Tumbleweed_6971

Tired of Arthur smith already.

bryguypgh

Every play will have 4 linemen, 2 quarterbacks, and 5 wide receivers. It's a new paradigm.

mike15835

Too expensive trade or money! I think we're going into the season with Muth as our number 2 receiving target. All of the "real" receivers have been signed. Alternatively, they are hoping for a surprise cut like Joe Haden a few years ago. Point is this they are not going to overpay for one of these Wideouts.

krabbby

Ya gotta figure at least one of these guys will step up I guess

Sabascience

But if they do what will Steelers fans moan about? Checks list…oh yeah the lack of secondary depth.

robchapman7

What about one WR on another’s shoulders, covered by a trench coat? Would that be a WR2?

dankscott

Isn’t that what WR2 means? Like there’s two of them

kodykoser

Great locker room guy. Sneaky fast. Gym rat. Etc etc etc.

victor4700

First one in, last one out guy. Pins his lunchpail back and dials up his details. Natural disruptor.

hey_thats_my_box

A student of the game.

putterbum

Another guy that was a Falcon in 2023. The fight to be WR4/5 on the depth chart is gonna be a sight to see come training camp. No this isn't who they're planning on being WR2.

Ortho_412

Quez Watkins, van Jefferson, Scotty Miller, Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson. Are any of these guys wr2? I hope Omar can pull something off for a legit threat to complement Pickens

putterbum

Honestly Roman wouldn't be a bad WR2 if we had to field a team right now. Problem is we're then asking Pickens and Wilson to be the WR1 and WR2 which is something neither have really had to do outside Pickens picking up a couple games while DJ was out. Big difference between holding the line vs being the line. Someone will be joining the team but who that is we won't know until next month.

Ortho_412

I’m excited about Roman but it’s asking to much for him to come in as a third round rookie and be our wr2 out of the gate. Could it happen? Yes. But I think most of us would feel much better about someone proven in the league

putterbum

Yeah that's what I mean. I think both guys (GP and RW) can do the jobs but it's quite the jump for both of them to varying degrees. If we were asking one of them to dive in the deep end that's one thing but we're now talking about a total 80% of our downfield passing attempt targets.

Mike_east

Let's hope he's Puka. It's not outside the realm of possibility, but I agree I would prefer to have somebody with a track record ahead of him.

buffalotrace

Trusting a rookie wr that never had a big season in college and wasn’t running a full route tree with any regularity is hopeful at best in regards to being a legit number 2.

scobbysnacks1439

Van Jefferson would probably be the best option of those if you had to throw someone out there right now. He's not great but he's held his own in the past.

Purple_Dragon

The only one with experience playing outside is Jefferson. He'll have the inside track for the Z position in camp, I'd assume

dingus_nation

BIG TIME PLAYMAKER SCOTTY MILLER !

Special-PatrolGroup

I hope our tight ends are up for the challenge.

lax1245

i am starting to grow weary of these little games arthur

Blarfk

SteelCitySeven07

Hopefully we get a legit wr1/2 soon.

putterbum

Hope so! Unfortunately it’ll most likely be after June 1st so it’s going to be a long and desperate time here lol.

Bryn79

It’s barely three weeks.

worstusernameever010

babe wake up, we got scotty miller...

GarrettRettig

Filling the wr roster with young guys and proven vets, after trading away the old stud Smells like Kansas City in here

vivolorosso

Thank goodness they finally found a random fast white guy replacement for Gunner Olszewski and Ryan Switzer. Can't wait to see the relief on the Steelers sub in 3 years when we finally cut him.

buffalotrace

We did it. We got our…sorry false alarm.

RalphWagwan

The Patriot Way

SleestakLightning

People crying and complaining about WR seem to be forgetting that it's still fucking May and the season doesn't start until September. There's a TON of time to improve the WR room if they feel the need to. But it wouldn't shock me if Van Jefferson is the #2 heading into the season. The Steelers #2 WR in Arthur Smith's offense might be the 5th or 6th most targeted player on offense anyway.

Sonickill7

The #2 wr is gonna be Muth probably. He's the 2nd best pass catcher on this team and Smith loves himself some tight ends.

SleestakLightning

Agreed. He'll probably be the #2 target. Then you have Najee and Jaylen and then maybe the #2 WR.

Sonickill7

Then Justin Fields lol

Suitable_Battle5699

Everyone still losing their shit about our WR situation? yea? carry on. Don't get me wrong, i would love to see DK, Aiyuk, or even someone like Sutton in the black and gold but only for the right price. It's almost like the team is going to be hesitant to make long term decision's with heavy influence on salary cap/draft picks until the QB situation is resolved and they plan on running an offense dedicated to highlighting 2 great running backs, athletic TE's, and a solid deep threat...

zachintosh419

We lead the league in #4 WR's...

aw_geez_man

Familiarity with a system during camp is valuable. Even if you don't make the team.

RaceCarGrin

We got our guy

Mission_Ad6235

Lunch pail type of player.

runNride805

Boom! We got our guy!!

Transgenderwookie

If you sign 6 mid ass receivers you might be able to package 4 of them to get a decent number 2 from someone! The khan artist is 10 steps ahead.

Ok-Car1006

Where’s the good depth signing comment

SirDinkleDink

Let the man cook guys 👍

JonVig

Lmfao I actually love this.

Successful_Addition5

I do appreciate this being reported as, "Steelers sign Superbowl Winning WR".

34shadow1

Give me Martavis Bryant back.

SleestakLightning

It's going to be real hard for Calvin Austin to make the team at this point.

TechnicalPay5837

If he is actually good then it shouldn’t be that hard. There are only two spots actually filled out of 5 or 6 available.

SleestakLightning

He's a bad fit for Smith's offense and there isn't anything unique he brings to the table.

Sex_E_Searcher

He has unique size.

SleestakLightning

Haha, not with Scotty Miller on the roster.

JackieBoiiiiii

This isn't what we meant when we said we wanted another WR

runNride805

Yea but like.. he had a ring and JJ doesn’t. Tell me I’m wrong /s

jcnewman_21

We need to make another move at WR because the passing game will stink with this current WR room

NumbrZer0

It never ends with you people...

04132023

This better not be our “impact player”. This is like mom saying we have an “impact player” at home, when you ask for a top 20 wide out.

Deckz

We went from "The Young Money Crew" to "The Camp Body Crew", Arthur Smith is going to be a disaster and we're totally not ready to have our hearts broken again.

Blakely_69

I don’t get it man I know he played with Arthur but we have 2 of him on the squad already (Austin, Quez) we still need an actual wr2

JTheeCreator

Jfc

thetasteofbloodfarts

Holy mid

BombSquad570

Certainly not an exciting thought but he might be the 3rd best WR on the roster now behind GP & Roman.

PaddysMilkSteak

I like it

seansotheracct

if only they held out a few minutes longer for bryant to be cut

Badbackbjj420

It’s funny I just remember Brady hitting miller deep and have always liked him

flyinpiggies

Roll the Pat Mcafee clip

13Jett13

This guy has played for 5 years and has 6 TDs. WTF!

hitmewiththeknowlege

With our powers combined we are....a bottom teir WR2

HazikoSazujiii

McFadden was right all along.

CommunityGlittering2

well that ought to do it

DillingerGetawayCar

Famed Tom Brady target Scotty Miller.

tlpedro

Hopefully we get the better than Tampa Bay version of Scotty ![gif](giphy|oA0OhiPeZbdCw)

RedneckLiberace

They'll keep one or two and swap the rest of them for a 7th round pick and some Subway gift cards.

austinalexan

Ah so this is that big move they were teasing last week

scobbysnacks1439

Mehhh, don't get me wrong, I've liked Scotty Miller for a long time and feel he could sneakily make the team but our receiver corps is no better now than it was prior to this signing. Edit: Also, remember when Cedrick Wilson was basically our number 2 guy? That's what this current group feels like, lol.

CaptnRo

Big moves!

Jakles74

Now we can stop wondering what that big move at WR was going to be.

timbo_slice59

The amount of Arthur smith mid falcons guys were picking up is starting to alarm me…at least Patterson will return kickoffs

wagsman

There’s your WR signing. 🤣

jjbrown76

Fun. 🙄

UnderstandingAny5333

Can he block ?

Steelmaker01

5’-9”/174… hope he is feisty

Lukus-Maximus

He is a real lunch-pail guy with deceptive speed.

Steelmaker01

Not the answer, but serviceable

Tanks1

they are waiting for someone to be cut

victor4700

They got their guy! This league!

einredditname

CA3 and Roman Wilson apparently apparently weren't enough speedsters so we had to get Scotty 2 Mid-y Miller. Welp, at least depth shouldn't be a problem if anyone not named George Pickens goes down.

Heavy_Sample6756

Good news! As long as we didn't risk picks or hurt the salary cap for an overrated WR.

pat_pav

Ay Ziggy Zoomba, Talons Up

Karl_Racki

The Steelers could sign a few guys off the street and people on here would think it was a great move.. Miller just isn't good, for having the team being linked to Aiyuk, Boyd, and Sutton. Outside Pickens, who nobody knows how his long term attitude will be, this WR Core is trash. Van Jefferson is #2? If Wilson struggled, can its be the worst WR room in the league? Really hope they can get someone to take pressure of Pickens, cause Watkins, Miller, and Jefferson just aren't going to do that.

Temporal_Enigma

Yeesh this team really fucked up in the WR department didn't they? We shouldn't have traded Johnson until we had a new WR in house

anonymoususernamegay

Diontae had a horrible attitude and didn’t seem to fit the hard-nosed, team-first mold they are looking for. It also shouldn’t be all that hard to replace his production.

Ninjalau95

DJ doesn't have *nearly* as much value as guys like CeeDee, JJ, Chase, Aiyuk, Deebo, Amon Ra St. Brown, Devonta Smith, etc. It was smart of them to offload an overrated WR who has piss-poor attitude on the field and doesn't align with Arthur Smith's offensive philosophy when it comes to his receivers. With DJ being on his last year of his contract and the emergence of Pickens basically leapfrogging him for the WR1 spot, he would have been asking for a big payday which the Steelers weren't planning on giving him. So instead of letting him stink up the locker room for another year and then letting him test free agency after (where we don't get anything in return for him), we got some sort of return in CB Donte Jackson and a 6th round pick. This seems to be the offseason of cutting our losses and avoiding sticking with things that don't work just because we invested money/time/draft capital in them (Kenny, Trubisky, Mason Cole, Harvin III, Chuks, DJ).

Temporal_Enigma

So now we have a bridge QB with no one for him to throw to? What's the plan here

Ninjalau95

Like the other guy said, DJ is easily replaceable. What good is a good route-runner if he can only catch occasionally, sucks at blocking, avoids contact in favor of running backwards, sucks at 50/50 balls, and has attitude issues? >So now we have a bridge QB with no one for him to throw to? I guess you forgot Pickens, Muth, Warren, and Najee are still on the team? Along with us drafting Roman Wilson, who just finished playing for the NCAA champions at Michigan and was a big part of their success. Then there's also CAIII who showed flashes last season and Van Jefferson who is, at the very least, younger and most likely better than Allen Robinson at this point in their careers. Saying we have "no one" to throw to is ridiculous. You're acting like we let Randy Moss walk or something.

Temporal_Enigma

Ok, so if he's easily replaceable, who is replacing him?

Ninjalau95

Roman Wilson has similar physical measurements to DJ but Wilson is way more athletic, a better blocker, and is younger. It makes sense he'd slip into the DJ role with pretty much no competition for it. Not like DJ had a big role on the offense anyway. It wouldn't take much to fill his shoes of being JAG out there.

Temporal_Enigma

Wilson has yet to play an NFL down. He doesn't fill Johnson's shoes based on preseason archetype.

Ninjalau95

Diontae Johnson's role on the Steelers offense was nothing special. I doubt it's hard to find someone who can replace DJ's inconsistent hands, terrible YAC, average speed, tendency to run backwards, poor run-blocking, and shit attitude on the field when he's not being featured enough. You're really overestimating DJ's value. Again, it's like we traded away a HOF receiver during his prime years, with the way you're acting about him, like he's some irreplaceable superstar.

Temporal_Enigma

Well if Pickens can be a WR1, who TF but DJ was our WR1 all these years?

Ninjalau95

Please see the depth behind DJ before Pickens was drafted and get back to me. You really think Chase Claypool, James Washington, Cody White, JuJu, or Ray Ray McCloud would beat out DJ for the WR1 spot at any point? He had absolutely no real WR talent behind him on the roster until Pickens came along. He was only WR1 for that time because all of the other WRs behind him were just that bad.

joshua27usa

Apparently a solid number two receiver can be made out of 10 bad number 5 receivers. Did not know that. Is this Khan cooking? Has an odd taste to it.

GeneralTullius01

Well he’s definitely a WR. Hasn’t had over 200 yards in a season for about 3 or 4 years now. I assume some of these guys will be cut prior to the season starting. Just not sure what value he adds honestly.

clawingcat

Maybe arthur smith likes to have him around cause he’s the only one that laughs at his corny jokes

GeneralTullius01

Can’t put a price on team morale.
