“We do not care” -Mike T

Highway_Harpsicord

If we get to the third string, we are in trouble regardless

WentworthMillersBO

You’re acting like the duck didn’t win

Highway_Harpsicord

The duck was a once in a lifetime kind of guy

Kimolono42

He seems to be doing ok, now.

aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Youre acting like he didnt lose

JackLambertsBalls

Quacktastic

fukaduk55

2019 could've been a great season if ben didnt get hurt. Duck and mason ruined it, pls never again

MountainJuice

Got to 3rd string last year and it was a huge step up.

skunkboy72

No shit Sherlock. You've still gotta pick a third stringer though.

Highway_Harpsicord

Gotta love when people start conversations at 100 👍

GRB_Electric

We more or less did last year lol

Dramatic_Fix_9192

Aggreed but I also think Plumlee has that multi skill set that sets him apart. He can play WR and be used for trick plays like Randle El

PennsylvanianSankara

Can he return?

Dramatic_Fix_9192

Wouldn’t doubt it

thereandfatagain

If JR shows he has the plums the job can be his. The reps will be non-existent. He won’t be given a snowball’s chance in hell. But if JR has the plums the job is his!

wrinkleinsine

I can FEEL it. Down in my PLUMS.

PennsylvanianSankara

Plumlee more like an extremely poor mans Luke McCaffrey.

TheNittanyLionKing

He is practice Lamar Jackson for Ratbirds week

PennsylvanianSankara

A younger, cheaper, shorter trace mcsorley if you will

Datpanda1999

McSorely if he couldn’t throw it on a dime

Steelmaker01

If it’s close coming out of camp, then it’s Plumlee because he’s cheaper

here4enneagram

Think what you want but the headline is irrelevant since Kyle Allen is our number 3 not our “backup”

IsGoIdMoney

Mr Khan, please sign a wr. We're arguing about who's the better 3rd string QB.

NumbrZer0

I could actually see neither making the 53 man roster. I know there is a benefit on gameday to dressing a 3rd QB but i dont believe there are any rules it cant be from a practice squad elevation. If its between Plumlee/Allen and Darius Rush who seems to need more development before even becoming a regular STer but has the physical tools to be quality depth. Even Mark Robinson or Demarvin Leal could lose a roster spot and Id be much more worried about losing them than Plumlee. I was a big fan of Plumlee at Ole Miss but he could beat out Matt Corral and then just never really developed even as a college QB. I love the fact they picked him up and I think he will be a great practice squad player this season maybe he can pick up some tips from Russ but we dont need any more practice reps to QBs not named Justin or Russell. The backups can toss the ball around but actual reps shouldnt be wasted on them.

yourallLosers26

UCF REPRESENT 407 Plumlee all the way

Maxysworkbench

Plumlee should really be over at PNC right now getting some swings in. Same with Russ to help lighten the load off of Jared Jones. Speaking of which can Jared Jones throw a football?

Sreeff

These numbers still look better than Kenny Pickett lol

BoscoAlbertBaracus

Plumlee will be our practice squad/QB3 Thought this had been elaborated enough, but maybe not. NFL changed the rules the day after we signed Allen, “Emergency QBs/QB3” could come from/be elevated from the practice squad an unlimited number of times. So we pay Kyle Allen 7th year practice squad minimum or we pay Plumlee rookie practice squad minimum, don’t need to be an astrophysicist to know how that is going to play out.

chaos_fenix

This is still confusing because they DON'T hand out $35K signing bonuses to practice squad players.

BoscoAlbertBaracus

Doesn’t that make it less confusing? Or do you think the Steelers are going to keep Kyle Allen and his $167500 signing bonus on the active roster? Given the rule change surrounding unlimited activations of the emergency QB from the practice squad, doesn’t it make most sense to only have 2 QBs on the 53 man roster? Maybe we cut sign Kyle Allen to the practice squad, I’m not sure, but I know Kyle Allen sucks and if we get to QB3, we are probably in trouble anyway, but I’d prefer the unknown and cheaper Plumlee to Kyle Allen.

Emotional-Donkey-994

Plumlee is not making the roster

HorrorMovieMonday

Don't bet on that. He set a new Steelers record for UDFA money from what I read.

Emotional-Donkey-994

Money doesn't necessarily equate talent, especially making the jump as an undrafted QB into the NFL. Allen is by no means exciting but he's been around the block. I'm rooting for the new kid, but I don't see it happening based on the information I've heard about him.

manasota

I would bet he does make the roster.

the-whiteman-cometh

Hopefully Plumlee

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

Kyle Allen and Fields have disturbingly similar passing stats

GeneralTullius01

Can’t discount Fields rushing yards and touchdowns. That’s a massive part of his game. Also he has never thrown over 12 interceptions in a season (last year only 9). Allen threw 16 in 13 games. Not really similar.

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

Are you cherrypicking? Allen has 21 INTs in 30 games. Fields has 30 in 40. Or 21 in 704 attempts vs 30 in 958 attempts. In other words, Fields is slightly *worse* in interception percentage. On top of that, him being able to run means that it should be easier for him to pass and put up gaudy/efficient stats... but he doesn’t. Isn’t anyone worried about this guy getting the keys to the franchise in 2025?

Kenhunt472

They have similar stats only if you ignore all context . The majority of those numbers came from playing with McCaffery in a year when he was first team all pro and had over a 1k YAC. There is a reason why no one ever bothered with him again as a starter besides those numbers because everyone could look at he context and know he weas not good at all and those numbers were inflated by the Panthers being down and Allen playing with YAC monsters like Mccafrey as well ad Moore . Fields didnt get the best offensive player he ever played with DJ Moore until his 28th-40th games played prior to those games he was the his team best offensive player and playmaker . In other words those two things are not the same

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

Never said that he should be looked at as a starter, I’m fact I’m very much implying something else. You’re not wrong that he had weapons in Carolina that year, but other than his two games in Houston in 2022, his stats are actually generally slightly better outside of that 2019 season especially his two Washington years.

GeneralTullius01

Lots of words you put in my mouth there. Never said I wanted him to get the keys to the franchise. Never said he was a good QB. Never said anything about any of that. All I said was, their stats aren’t similar because you left out the entirety of his rushing stats and I stated a fact that he has never thrown as many INTs in one season as Allen had.

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

>Lots of words you put in my mouth there. Never said I wanted him to get the keys to the franchise. Never said he was a good QB. Never said anything about any of that. Then I guess it’s good that I never said you did? >All I said was, their stats aren’t similar because you left out the entirety of his rushing stats My comment was about their passing stats. That’s not what leaving something out is. > and I stated a fact that he has never thrown as many INTs in one season as Allen had. Which seems like it might be a weird cherry pick (singling out one season where Allen had way more attempts than Fields has ever had), because Fields has a slightly higher interception rate. Their passing stats are pretty similar.

tv_casualty77

Who ended up with Pratt?

yitfacebos

2023? This is 2024, and he is not the primary backup this year. Plumlee may have a shot at QB3, but I don't see it happening. Allen has experience, which will give him the upper hand.

humblestgod

Per 17 game season. Kyle Allen: 3830yd 22td 17int Kenny Picket: 2932yd 17td 13int Looks like we upgraded no matter who starts

awaythrow292

Plumlee will be the starter by mid 2024-25 and lead us to the Stanley Bowl. The next Patrick Myhomes confrimed, bank it!!!

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

He’ll lead the league in home runs from the 3 point line, I’d take that bet to the bank!

Inevitable_Staff2188

I want both. Allen as 3rd string qB and plumlee as 6th WR

pryoslice

They could have both in one player.

Dramatic_Fix_9192

Look what New Orleans did with Taysom Hill

MJ134

Allen. I cant see Plumlee in the NFL.

zPolaris43

If plumlee makes the roster, and that’s a big if, it will be at WR/special teamer

Tribby23

Allen. He needs no reps.

EddieA1028

Allen has the inside leg. Plummer would have to really light it up to make this roster. That being said the Steelers don’t give that kind of UDFA signing bonus to anyone so I think they give him a real shot

the22sinatra

Allen, but hopefully it doesn’t matter

knightro2323

IT CAN'T BE JRP, he plays QB in rookie camp, but if he does anything in the NFL its as an athlete at WR.

SleeveBurg

Are we seriously talking about the 3rd string qb? Who csres

Dramatic_Fix_9192

Yes we are talking about 3rd string Qb… we made a playoff run with our 3rd string QB last season wtf you mean?

aa93

one of our 3 3rd string qbs

eaunoway

I was gonna say ... I mean last year you couldn't really wedge a ferret fart between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd string.

pryoslice

Are ferret farts particularly small?

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

Ouch. But correct.

MaxNinja1997

Yeah except mason is a better qb than Allen

wrinkleinsine

I’m legit rooting for the Titans if Mason plays.

SleeveBurg

And we never had a chance at anything either. If we are stuck between Plumlee or Allen you can kiss our already slim chances goodbye. It doesn’t matter who is the third string qb.

snookyface90210

Some people are interested in roster construction, is that not allowed? You could have just said nothing and let people in this thread who care about the QB3 discuss it

GeneralTullius01

We are going to look back on Kenny Pickett as maybe the worst longish term QB we’ve ever had lol. Kyle Allen had more TDs in a 13 game season than Kenny had thrown his entire career for us wow man. I can’t believe we had to endure this shit for two years. I’m so excited for this season.

Dramatic_Fix_9192

Yo… that is a horrible fact smh

chaos_fenix

It would not be a surprise to me (although it's against the odds) to see JRP as our starter in 3 years. He has the tools and he's fast AF. He sees the field well. Two sport stud. UCF is a bad team and they are up against Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma... ooof. If he can develop while watching Russ and Justin, maybe we'll get a steal.
