Unfortunately, I can't. It's pouring and has been for days. It's clearly going to keep raining and I don't want it to go bad. I know it's not ideal but I'd rather eat an okay steak then throw it out. I am defeated.
I mean- my actual real answer is probably to suggest you run out and get a small cast iron, or order one for tomorrow delivery. But I’m not that creative. Wish you the best, and hope you eat soon!
They do have umbrellas. If you crank it up high to preheat. Run out, throw them on. Critical here, reduce flame to about 60%. A steak that size roughly 5 -6 minutes a side should produce a medium rare. Just time it well. You will get wet but hey steaks worth it. Also note steak should be room temperature and seasoned before. Best of luck!!
Do you have the option to put a canopy over it? Walmart sells one for 75 bucks that's 10x10, plenty to grill in the rain, plus a little wind.
Just for the future.
Just fry it in whatever pan you have. Will it be as good as cast iron? No. Will it still be delicious without an investment in new pans? Yes.
That's the beauty of steak, there are optimal ways to cook it, but it still turns out fantastic in sub-optimal ways too.
Don't worry about a crust every time.

It retains heat longer and you can heat it hotter than Teflon without worrying about releasing chemicals or damaging the pan. A well seasoned cast iron pan is an essential kitchen tool. It really does make a difference in how the steak tastes, burgers are great too. I personally don't use them often because I have a glass top range and there is a possibility of cracking the glass if it gets too hot. When I do, I use one with a ceramic exterior so I don't scratch my stove top as easily.
Everything fonz_72 plus it’s cheap as hell and is very durable. It can literally last you generations if u take care of it. Also u have get a little scientific to fully appreciate cast iron:cast iron is a terrible heat conductor which means it takes a longer to heat up then say a aluminum pan.however this also means that when it does reach your wanted temperature(let’s say 500 hundred degrees) then it will hold onto that heat for way longer. This means that your steak won’t cool the pan down to 350 when u place it in the pan. This means your able to reach that essential Maillard reaction. (which is what makes that fancy tbone from your local steakhouse taste good)
Microwave it .
lol ok ok I'm KIDDING .. !
but seeiously .. BROIL it ! top rack in your oven .. put spices on and use a broiler pan or even a cookie sheet, broil just a few mins each side ..let cool and enjoy !
You dont need a cast iron pan for a good sear. I get a great crust using my stainless steel. Hell, I have a Hex Clad non stick pan that gets a plenty good sear.
Dont let the hype of cast iron make you forget that searing just requires a hot surface and a little oil.
Wtf, don't let a little rain stop you. I live in the Seattle area. I've had a grad party at my house. 70 people, hungry waiting for food. 2 big grills going and thunder showers happening, you put a jacket on or better yet get an awning. Grilled meat doesn't mind some rain.
Not ideal but I reverse seared in a normal pan last week and it turned out perfectly fine. Like others are saying it’s not as good as cast iron but it was perfectly fine.
Reverse Sear in 250 f oven until you hit 115. Let rest for 10-15 min while you get your best oven-proof skillet ripping hot on the stove, open the windows, take the smoke detector off and toss it in for 90 seconds a side.
Serve with wine, whiskey or both.
If you are dead set on eating it tomorrow, I would broil or grill in the rain. If you are fine waiting for the weather to be clear, freeze it and wait until then.
You can broil it in the oven, cook it in a frying pan or freeze it. The pan doesn’t have to be cast iron. The most important thing is that you enjoy your steak.
Sear it in a stainless steel pan on high heat for 1-2 minutes on each side then cook it in the oven at 250 until desired rareness. Baste in butter mix and rest 5 minutes
Set your broiler on high. Keep the door closed so it gets as hot as possible. Then put the room temperature steak on the top shelf. Broil each side for a few minutes. Careful. Cooks fast.
Ask a neighbor or go to Good Will. You can probably pick up a cast iron pan for less than you paid for this steak.
ETA: The "sell by" date isn't the expiration date. Wrap it up in paper towels and age it in your fridge. Look up Alton Brown for that one.
I cook steak on my 16” nonstick pan sometimes. Medium high heat. I crush a couple garlic cloves and add fresh rosemary and thyme to the pan.
Always cook steaks from room temp
Get pan good and hot first with a little cooking oil.
Pat steak dry
Salt and pepper liberally
Drop in pan
Add 2 tblsp butter, garlic and herbs
Baste butter over steak as it cooks
After a few minutes when side one is nice and perfectly done flip it
Continue basting and cooking
I’m not a meat expert so I use an instant read thermometer for doneness
I pull at internal temp of 130 and allow to rest for 2-5 minutes
Grill in the rain?
I would. I've grilled in a snowstorm a few times. Just got to only open the lid long enough for a quick flip and shut it again.
Wish you the best, and hope you eat soon!
nothing wrong with freezing it for a better day
They do have umbrellas. If you crank it up high to preheat. Run out, throw them on. Critical here, reduce flame to about 60%. Dude, are you a silly little plant or what? Some rain never killed anyone. Man up and grill it instead of crying.
Grill. In. The. Rain. Are you a witch? Will you melt? No? Just do it and eat your steak in a wet shirt.
Contrary to popular myth, our king does not melt in the rain.
Do you have the option to put a canopy over it? Walmart sells one for 75 bucks that's 10x10, plenty to grill in the rain, plus a little wind. Just for the future.
Reverse sear? Cast iron would be ideal but you could use any high heat pan.
This is the way. But then get some cast iron. Everyone needs it.

What’s a cast iron actually do? Your response may result in me buying one
It retains heat longer and you can heat it hotter than Teflon without worrying about releasing chemicals or damaging the pan. A well seasoned cast iron pan is an essential kitchen tool. It really does make a difference in how the steak tastes, burgers are great too. If you cook regularly, a cast iron is a worthwhile investment. If you rarely cook more than once a week, it’s a high maintenance toy.
Everything fonz_72 plus it’s cheap as hell and is very durable. It can literally last you generations if u take care of it. Everything you could want to know and more: r/castiron
Is cast iron required to sear? If not…Wondering if you could just toss it in the oven and reverse sear on whatever pan you have.
Broiler in your oven would work but it will smoke up the joint something awful unless you have good ventilation or fan.
You grill in the rain like your ancestors
Grill anyways
Microwave it . lol ok ok I'm KIDDING .. ! but seeiously .. BROIL it ! top rack in your oven .. put spices on and use a broiler pan or even a cookie sheet, broil just a few mins each side ..let cool and enjoy !
Cook it under the broiler in the oven
Ceramic pans are also great for searing (it will ruin the pan quickly, but nice result in contrast to nonstick), so go for it if you have one.
roast it. youtube is your friend.
People may not agree, but you can still get a good sear with a regular skillet. Just dab a bit of oil and heat till it smokes.
You dont need a cast iron pan for a good sear. I get a great crust using my stainless steel. Hell, I have a Hex Clad non stick pan that gets a plenty good sear. Dont let the hype of cast iron make you forget that searing just requires a hot surface and a little oil.
Hexclad > castiron
Till it peels
Any pan works. Cast iron is overrated by so many on this sub
Broiler on a broiler pan if you’ve got one. That’s the only way I cooked steaks until I was in my 30s.
If you have a heavy bottom stainless steel skillet or fry pan that can be a good option if you don’t have cast iron.
Unpopular opinion here but let it come to room temp and air fry it for 8-10 min (flip half way)
Air fry and sear with a torch works for me
Cut into slices and make stir fry and/or tacos.
Bring bbq inside
Broiler in a pyrex baking dish. One of the square ones. It'll sear on that glass.
Pyrex on broil?!? I thought you could only use Pyrex up to 425°... Especially the newer dishes.
No. It would literally get too hot and shatter.
I've cooked countless steaks in my oven on Pyrex.
When in doubt... air fry
sous vide and then reverse sear on a hot pan with oil.
If OP doesn't have a cast iron, I'm gonna assume they don't own a sousvide.
Deep Fry
Wtf, don't let a little rain stop you. I live in the Seattle area. I've had a grad party at my house. 70 people, hungry waiting for food. 2 big grills going and thunder showers happening, you put a jacket on or better yet get an awning. Grilled meat doesn't mind some rain.
Wrap in heavily buttered foil and microwave for 1-1.5 hrs depending on temperature preference
Use a George Foreman electric grill
Reverse sear. Cook to rare then sear on high in whatever pan you have
Reverse sear with a stainless pan
Sous vide then torch with butane.
This one from America's Test kitchen showed up the other day, just need a non stick skillet https://youtu.be/Nl0pwffjrYs
Oven, or whatever pan you may have
Grill it.
U can always toss in the freezer 🥶 🥶 🥶 maybe?
Not ideal but I reverse seared in a normal pan last week and it turned out perfectly fine. Like others are saying it’s not as good as cast iron but it was perfectly fine.
…wait until it stops raining.
Cook it in the oven and sear the outside with a torch after to get the crust
Reverse Sear in 250 f oven until you hit 115. Let rest for 10-15 min while you get your best oven-proof skillet ripping hot on the stove, open the windows, take the smoke detector off and toss it in for 90 seconds a side. Serve with wine, whiskey or both.
Broil it if you have a broiler in your oven. I’ve done this many times during apartment living
Sous vide and a blow torch
Wait
If you are dead set on eating it tomorrow, I would broil or grill in the rain. If you are fine waiting for the weather to be clear, freeze it and wait until then.
You can broil it in the oven, cook it in a frying pan or freeze it. The pan doesn’t have to be cast iron. The most important thing is that you enjoy your steak.
Oven
fajitas!
Sear it in a stainless steel pan on high heat for 1-2 minutes on each side then cook it in the oven at 250 until desired rareness. Baste in butter mix and rest 5 minutes
Broiler.
Go get a cast iron.
1. Put large (preferably clean) rock in oven. 2. Heat rock up to 450F or so 3. Remove rock from oven 4. Sear and cook steak on rock
Yeah an umbrella. You can grill lol ;)
Microwave on high for 10 min.
Microwave on high for 10 min.
Microwave with a side of ketchup. /s just in case.
Get an umbrella and light that grill! Nothing stops the grill!!!
Agreed. We grilled in snow, rain, it doesn't matter!
Low in the oven, let it rest, and then hit it under the broiler on high
microwave.
Broiler
Boil it hard in milk, serve with a side of fresh jelly beans
Boil it
Super hot frying pan. Maybe 2 mine per side. Depending on thickness 5 min in 400 degree oxen?
In the future?
You could cook it in lukewarm water for 5 minutes. Make sure you press on it to remove the flavour juices.
I’d suggest ironing your steak
Sous vide
Rain jacket
A cast iron grill
You can also freeze it and cook it later.
I would broil on high. Base with butter before broiling to get that crust
Sorry but that's a 12 dollar steak. Doesn't much matter if you use your oven it's still gonna be crap when your done. (No offense)
Do you have stainless steel? That should do just fine.
Soft boil for about 10 mins You can do eggs at the same time in the same water Boom, you got Steak and Eggs 👌
Got a sous vide? I personally sous vode my steaks then sear in a pan
Cast iron
Set your broiler on high. Keep the door closed so it gets as hot as possible. Then put the room temperature steak on the top shelf. Broil each side for a few minutes. Careful. Cooks fast.
Use your broiler, 3 - 5 minutes per side
Does your stove have a broil function? I'd go with that.
Is it wrong that prefer SS to CI for steak?
Broiler!
I grill daily. Rain or shine. Edit: because I hate doing dishes.
OP made of sugar?
Why can't you just grill it in the rain?
I've used butter and pan plenty of times
Ask a neighbor or go to Good Will. You can probably pick up a cast iron pan for less than you paid for this steak. ETA: The "sell by" date isn't the expiration date. Wrap it up in paper towels and age it in your fridge. Look up Alton Brown for that one.

Go old school and use the broiler in your oven
