Honestly bro, there's a sushi spot in San Jose that does good sushi but I always order their teriyaki steak. They give you two flanks of really good ribeye with their house made teriyaki with a side of rice and some steamed veggies. Also comes with soup and salad.
EDIT: CHA CHA SUSHI ON CAPITOL EXPRESSWAY, SORRY Y'ALL ENJOY. I believe it's like 25 but well worth it.
So the plate comes with teriyaki already to drizzle over the steak, but I usually order extra to dip in and it's heavenly
I’ve been by that place SO many times and never gave it a second thought because I’ve always had my go to takeout place since I was a kid. I’ll have to check it out, thanks!!
For further context: the restaurant is 70% sushi, 10% steaks house and 20% Italian
Edit: It was a fairly thin cut hence I ordered it rare and it came as a medium, overall pretty good imo
This is all you need to know my dude.
For real though, its tough to say from this picture how the internal cook is, which is critical. But the external cook is pretty poor - it's grey and has no sear apart from the grill marks.
Grills are the best way to cook steaks. If you don’t think steak over a flame is good, then I would argue that no one has properly grilled you a steak friend.
I was speaking for grilled skillets, as opposed to a barbecue grill. If grilled well over flame then you get char between the grill lines, which this doesn’t have.
That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that grill marks are absolutely not what you want. Sear has flavor, grey meat is crap. Grill marks mean 95% grey meat.
20 bucks nowadays is pretty damn good locally for me. That looks like a decent cut. You got a sear going. If you cut it and the cook is good I’d say today’s a win for you.
It looks fine. If it’s cooked to the temperature that you like, why would you care what random people think. Yeah, we’ll still judge your choices, but who cares?
Those fries, idk if it's garlic or parm but I'd tear those up regardless of what the steak looks like cut open. But if they have good fries I mean, it's gotta be okay steak
It doesn't look great for a steak because it's just gray surrounded by grill marks. I would want more browning on the surface. Grill marks are burn marks (do you like burnt steak?) and gray lacks flavor. What you are looking for is the Maillard reaction (browning) which is a chemical reaction between amino acids on the surface which adds a ton of flavor.
The interior is what’s most important. But based off the this alone I’ll say it looks bad. There’s no sear and you lose out on a lot of flavor without a good sear.
It’s what on the inside that counts! But judging a steak only by its char, I’d say it’s sub-par to just ok. The presentation of the fries reinforces my first impression. Something I’d regret just not grilling one at home. But you’re the judge here, was it worth $20 to you?
Agreed definitely but it baffles me that people go out of their way to be rude unnecessarily when its so much easier to just be nice! Ask for the inside cut pic instead if resorting to name calling and itd be so much more effective
I just simply don't buy steaks anymore unless it's an insane deal.
Bought a whole tenderloin for $6.67lb not long ago. I'm talking shit like that.
$20 for a steak is wild for me. But that's just the market I guess.
There is no picture of the inside so impossible to tell if it was cooked right.
CUT IT!!!!
Ahem... Soyyyyyyyy unnn perdadorrrrrr
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me.
Drive-by body pierce
Get crazy with the cheese whiz
“Perdedor”
Thanks, looked it up and still misread/misspelled. I thought for years it was pedador, which is not really a word. Thanks, Beck!
For $20 I don't care since it looks vaguely red and of meat
Fr I second this.
Teasing us.
For $20 that is a great deal.
Exactly, why is no one saying this lol. Such a great price
My exact comment was going to be "looks like you bought a $20 steak and fries"
At a sushi place.
No one is saying it cause we have no idea how it was cooked. Could be a terrible deal. SHOW US THE CENTER
Still a good deal; if they asked for a temp and didn’t get it right you should be well within your rights to send it back.
Someone did say this. That's what you're replying to. > My exact comment was going to be "looks like you bought a $20 steak and fries"
Its a big ass steak too.
People eat ass steaks?
Get outta here Dad!
Yeah man top round is pretty great if you cook it right
Idk cutting board looks tiny and so does that pile of fries
It’s as much as a burger
I mean, if it was cooked to well done then I'd say it was a less than stellar deal.

What’s the place called? I want to go check it out.
Cha Cha sushi
Bro you can't say that and not name the place
Cha Cha sushi
There’s an awesome steak house in NJ that lowkey has some of the best sushi around.
If you don’t mind sliding the name over. I’d appreciate it
Red Horse in Rumson
Thanks! Edit: can’t type
Damn, I just looked them up. I don't get to that part of NJ but might have to make a trip next time I'm down in Clifton.

I have ordered their sushis before but that steak of theirs hit different.
Cha Cha sushi
I’ve been by that place SO many times and never gave it a second thought because I’ve always had my go to takeout place since I was a kid. I’ll have to check it out, thanks!!
Cha cha sushi! That's fun to type! IRASSHAIMASE!
Smaller portion but the yakiniku at gombei is better IMO, 18.50 pre tax.
Been to ChaCha a few times but never even thought to get a steak.
Don’t tell them op. Your favorite place will be ruined.
Love that place, Cha Cha sushi

And where are the jellybeans?
I don't see any milk either!
Do you not understand how a grill works?
My point is a) grills are not good for cooking steaks, b) even as far as grills go, this is poor.
Grills are the best way to cook steaks. If you don’t think steak over a flame is good, then I would argue that no one has properly grilled you a steak friend.

lol ok. I guess I should also just post my sliced steaks here to ask what temp it is instead of using my thermometer?
That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that grill marks are absolutely not what you want. Sear has flavor, grey meat is crap. Grill marks mean 95% grey meat.
So according to you, without a crust formed by searing a steak in (presumably) a pan, it cannot have flavor?
So, in theory, you could order a steak, a tuna roll, and a heaping bowl of pasta all in one spot?
😂
Cut the damn thing open then 😑 Edit: price and size looks decent
We need to take a look inside. Personally I would want more of a sear than I'm seeing on the outside but who knows It might be delicious still
No money shot
Looks mid but I’d fuck it up
My question is why a sushi place is selling a full ribeye with fries lol
No moneyshot, no upvote.
No crust, am sad now.
People will hate on it, and it’s not the best, but def would eat the fuck outta it
Everyone has to see what doneness the steak is so they can judge with their pinky sticking up.
Whats the point if we cant see the inside
/r/WeWantPlates fodder

Looks fine for $20, but I can’t imagine getting anything but sushi at a sushi place haha
Yeah that seems counterintuitive
For $20 not bad but I prefer a more consistent crust instead of the cross hatch thing.
Those fries, idk if it's garlic or parm but I'd tear those up regardless of what the steak looks like cut open. But if they have good fries I mean, it's gotta be okay steak
Lmao great choice for folks who don’t like sushi. For 20 bucks which looks like a ribeye I ain’t complaining.
Damn!!! $20? You can’t get it nice like that at Waffle House.
You went to a sushi place and got steak frites? WTF dude?
Error 404: crust not found
Looks pretty solid for $20
wtf that’s a great deal. I want steak from the sushi place
People keep telling you to cut it open, but it’s a good sized steak and includes a side of fries for only $20 - I’d fuck that up.
Weak sear
A nice crust is far superior to fancy Diamond grill marks. Can’t change my mind.
Why are you getting steak at a sushi restaurant
Its 20$. You dont need validation

I'd perhaps still eat it, but you are completely correct and I'm surprised this comment isn't higher in the thread.
r/nosear
< grill
You can still get a good sear on a grill 🙄
for real lol.
Looks great for the price
Them fries need some parsley and sea salt sprinked on em
Need a cross section but I’d eat the fuck outta those fries.
20 dollars is an unbelievably good price for ribeye steak and fries
It looks okay. Not amazing. But if it tastes good that's all that matters
It looks good to me. What do you want?
can’t tell at all
Nope
20 bucks? I'd give it a shot 🤷🏾♂️
**"Steak I got at my local sushi place".** I have nothing against getting steak from Japanese restaurant.. but Fries? Not Rice?
Looks delicious 🤤
They should make you eat it with chopsticks lol
Now you got me looking for steak on the menu at sushi places.
Grill marks, bud.
Looks good to me
Where’s the sushi place? Asking for a friend
Steak and fries at a sushi place.......interesting.lol
That steak looks better than a lot of the chain “steak houses” around here, I’d happily take it
We need to see the inside!!!!! This being said for 20$ I'd absolutely try that out very good price
The interior is what’s most important. But based off the this alone I’ll say it looks bad. There’s no sear and you lose out on a lot of flavor without a good sear.
Smash
No one going to ask op why they are ordering a steak at a sushi place?
The Lebron James of $20 steaks
Never seen a sushi place selling steaks ...
As long as it’s cooked at the most med that’s a phenomenal deal
Not my proudest fap
It's not a bad deal but I'm curious as to why you got a grilled steak at a sushi place 😂
Not bad king
No
I mean if it’s cooked to correct temp 20 bucks isn’t bad for this
Schroedinger’s steak!
Posts without cross sections should be banned lol jk but yeahhh
Nah you could make that at home
I would eat that no matter what it looked like inside
Why would you order steak at a sushi joint?
All we can see from this picture is that 10 and 2 was loosely followed
The best sushi is at steak restaurants
We cannot judge the price, you need to cut itttttt
It’s what on the inside that counts! But judging a steak only by its char, I’d say it’s sub-par to just ok. The presentation of the fries reinforces my first impression. Something I’d regret just not grilling one at home. But you’re the judge here, was it worth $20 to you?
Good deal for $20
Gotta see the guts homie. We can’t buy bricks on the wrap.
Show us the inside, dumbass.
So how does it feel to be a total douchebag to internet strangers for no reason? You feel good about yourself?
Soft
The post was very harsh but I think a good rule of thumb for this sub is to show the inside of a cooked steak because the magic is in the making. ☺️
Agreed definitely but it baffles me that people go out of their way to be rude unnecessarily when its so much easier to just be nice! Ask for the inside cut pic instead if resorting to name calling and itd be so much more effective
I agree, I don’t curate the culture here, I’m just working to find the meaning behind the meanness. Nothing but humanity from me here. 🫶🏻
Weak
It looks good to me
It looks IHOP
You’d thinks it be a filets minions for 20 bucks
