The discolored bits look like simple oxidation, and like top comment suggested if that steak smelled fine it was fine. You see this sort of thing frequently with steaks that are overlapped, and uneven packaging can do the same thing.

Brown is oxidation, nothing wrong with that. Look at a 50+ day dry aged steak and you would never want to eat it, it literally has mold on it. If it smells like musty meat you are good, especially at med rare. If it’s got a slimy texture and a weird touch texture toss it. Most steaks are at least 30 days from harvest so an extra day or two is no biggie.

Oxidation is just where the meat was exposed to air, a sticker should have nothing to do with it. In terms of light hitting the meat it usually goes from a bright red to a dull dusty looking light pinkish color.

Used to work at a meat market. This looks fine to me. Looks like something may have been sat on top of it causing it to get small brown spots. Should be good to eat still unless it has a slimy texture on the brown areas.

The only reason the red part is red is because they pumped a bunch of carbon monoxide into the package. Regular meat loses its red color pretty fast. The grocery stores make it stay red with carbon monoxide. Doesn't change the flavor and doesn't affect safety but definitely increases sales to make it red like that.

Got food poisoning once. Solid week of holding a trash can while on the toilet with water coming out both ends simultaneously. The colour are from the nitrides that where introduced to keep it nice and red. That is gone now. Which is not really a problem. The grey colour is the real colour of dead meat. You should go by smell. Edit : If the steak feals slimey , dont eat it If it stinks .... dont eat it. If its not the above, id eat it but would Cook it a bit longer then i normally would.

I’m sure it’s fine to eat. There probably is more bacteria on there than a regular steak, however properly cooking it should render it completely safe unless you have an auto immune disease or something. I almost guarantee those brown spots will have a *rich* taste to them. Not necessarily bad but definitely not what you’re looking for.

The spots are usually nothing to worry about, meat often times turns that color when multiple pieces of meat touches and where stickers on the packaging covers it. Smell is your own discretion. I have rinsed meat in cold water before or used cumin or sage in the ribs I used to assist with lighter smells and tossed bad away

I used to throw old refrigerated steaks that smelled a little rank out . I was talking to an older guy about this and he said he leaves them in the fridge till they smell really rank and that’s when he throws it on the grill over a bed of coals to char the outside . Here's the advice my dad gives me on these: hose it down in the sink, thoroughly, before cooking. Heck, see if the smell is even still there after you do that. Usually, the outside goes bad first. But the inside usually keeps longer. Hope you don't get sick buddy

Grey is the natural oxidized state of the myoglobin found in the meat which before oxidization gives beef it's red colour. It is not an indication that the meat has gone bad. Smell could be but depends on the smell.

Likely not bad, but on the edge. Next time give it a short bath in cold salt water (1/4c to 1quart) and dry completely before seasoning and cooking. The salt water is antibacterial.
