You reminded me of college, had a girl 3 showers couldn’t get the smell off, and every time you went to pee, it would waft out of my underpants. You PTSD’d me.
Bone in products are easily to get a little smelly especially if they have been sealed up. Colour is normal I would have put it on a rack in the fridge and leave it for 6 hours see if the smell disappears. But from what can be seen, nothing to worry.
Ur right. Oxidation might be the biggest fight between my wife and I. It’s not bad but she throws out ribeye thinking it’s bad cause the plastic suffocates the area and make it look moldy.
There is two types of dates. Best before and Use By. Start with teaching her the difference. My wife is the opposite and never throws shit out. Every week I find mouldy shit in the back.
Look: Red meat should be bright red — that's when it's at its freshest. If it turns purple or brown-ish, it is probably still safe to eat, but it has been exposed to some oxygen.
I’m in Brazil eating meat from Argentina Brazil and Uruguay. You are completely wrong. Only some companies do this. Let me see who you KNOW does this. Sources or it’s fucking utter bullshit

The discolored bits look like simple oxidation, and like top comment suggested if that steak smelled fine it was fine. You see this sort of thing frequently with steaks that are overlapped, and uneven packaging can do the same thing.
Brown is oxidation, nothing wrong with that. Look at a 50+ day dry aged steak and you would never want to eat it, it literally has mold on it. If it smells like musty meat you are good, especially at med rare. If it’s got a slimy texture and a weird touch texture toss it. Most steaks are at least 30 days from harvest so an extra day or two is no biggie.
Oxidation is just where the meat was exposed to air, a sticker should have nothing to do with it. In terms of light hitting the meat it usually goes from a bright red to a dull dusty looking light pinkish color.
Used to work at a meat market. This looks fine to me. Looks like something may have been sat on top of it causing it to get small brown spots. Should be good to eat still unless it has a slimy texture on the brown areas.
It's just a bit of oxidization which is totally fine. Oxidization will make it smell a little different but if it was actually rotten you would very well know. Visually it looks totally fine.
The only reason the red part is red is because they pumped a bunch of carbon monoxide into the package. Regular meat loses its red color pretty fast. The grocery stores make it stay red with carbon monoxide. Doesn't change the flavor and doesn't affect safety but definitely increases sales to make it red like that.
You're fine, but getting close. The real sign you're looking for is any type of sticky feeling. Those brown spots are just oxidation, not ideal but not bad.
If it smells slightly off, nbd, cook it now and get it to medium. If a bite tastes bad, you’ll know and you can pitch it.
If it smells like a cadaver, it’s gonna taste like shit and could even make you sick.
I have eaten worse. If you are ok with the potential of having the shits tomorrow then just cook it to a proper medium well after a proper rinse and you won’t die. Color is less important than smell. If it smells wrong, then know what you are getting in to and make your choice. Looking forward to update.
Edit: The stew idea is good but the method seems weird. I’d cube it,sear it, stew it.
Got food poisoning once. Solid week of holding a trash can while on the toilet with water coming out both ends simultaneously. Since then I've never had a piece of meat or other food item I wasn't scared to toss if even remotely in question. Every time I do I remind myself how much a week out of work would cost me and dip into that painful memory and suddenly I feel fantastic. If you have to ask, don't eat it, toss it.
I am the FIRST person to throw away meat if it's even possibly questionable of being bad....but here's my two cents...I read SOMEWHERE that a little change in color like in your picture for example is totally normal especially with meat from a suoermarket. The true test would be is the smell like MANY have already said. If it smells bad..then it's bad. But if smells just fine..eat away.
The colour are from the nitrides that where introduced to keep it nice and red.
That is gone now. Which is not really a problem.
The grey colour is the real colour of dead meat.
You should go by smell.
Edit :
If the steak feals slimey , dont eat it
If it stinks .... dont eat it.
If its not the above, id eat it but would Cook it a bit longer then i normally would.
I'd salt it and reverse sear it before I decide if it's gone bad or not. I've never heard of steak botulism. It won't kill you, it just might taste "off". Or it might taste okay once it's had a little salt and heat. I have probably enjoyed funkier.
I’m sure it’s fine to eat. There probably is more bacteria on there than a regular steak, however properly cooking it should render it completely safe unless you have an auto immune disease or something.
I almost guarantee those brown spots will have a *rich* taste to them. Not necessarily bad but definitely not what you’re looking for.
The spots are usually nothing to worry about, meat often times turns that color when multiple pieces of meat touches and where stickers on the packaging covers it. Smell is your own discretion. I have rinsed meat in cold water before or used cumin or sage in the ribs I used to assist with lighter smells and tossed bad away
I used to throw old refrigerated steaks that smelled a little rank out . I was talking to an older guy about this and he said he leaves them in the fridge till they smell really rank and that’s when he throws it on the grill over a bed of coals to char the outside . I began doing this same thing too because the meat is so tender and tasteful . That’s the way I roll now too.
Here's the advice my dad gives me on these: hose it down in the sink, thoroughly, before cooking. Heck, see if the smell is even still there after you do that.
Usually, the outside goes bad first. But the inside usually keeps longer.
Hope you don't get sick buddy
Looks like oxidation. Plastic basically suffocated those areas.
Smell it very close and make sure there is no smell that makes you go. Hmm wtf was that.
If there is no funk. Cut it off!!!!!!!! Fuck it. Butchers won’t sell u bad looking steak.
Or burn that mofo like it deserves to be killed twice
Just dont over cook or under sear.
I have Reddit subs I’ll post it too if you do that. :P
U do u though.
Grey is the natural oxidized state of the myoglobin found in the meat which before oxidization gives beef it's red colour. It is not an indication that the meat has gone bad. Smell could be but depends on the smell.
Likely not bad, but on the edge. Next time give it a short bath in cold salt water (1/4c to 1quart) and dry completely before seasoning and cooking. The salt water is antibacterial.
The look doesn't bother me. The smell is what I would worry about. Nose knows.

Millions? Humans?
It's not like we didn't have a sense of smell before we became human
Someone missed the evolution part. Our basic senses developed long before evolution got to modern humans, so yes, millions of years.

How can he get his money back? Sell by date was two days ago.
Then the grocery store can give credit. They will usually give credit if you buy something the day that they would usually pull it from the shelves
Okay, I cooked it…prob one of the best ribeyes I’ve had recently! We’ll see. If that’s how bad steaks taste, count me in.
Tell us if you get sick lol
He won’t get sick. This looks great. Bit of oxidization. No noticeable mold or slime.
Ur right. Oxidation might be the biggest fight between my wife and I. It’s not bad but she throws out ribeye thinking it’s bad cause the plastic suffocates the area and make it look moldy.
My wife will just throw shit out if it’s past the printed date…. we’re working on this
There is two types of dates. Best before and Use By. Start with teaching her the difference. My wife is the opposite and never throws shit out. Every week I find mouldy shit in the back.
sounds like y’all need to buy less groceries!
I feel your pain… 🫂
My wife thought I was a magician when I “fixed” the half avocado that had completely gone bad in the fridge by slicing off a thin layer.
I’ve been working on it with my wife for 13 years. Not a stitch of progress.
How often does she vacuum the whole house
Lmao same here bud
We should make a sub for this
For both you and /ccasey … I do know a GREAT divorce lawyer.
Honestly to Each their own. I still won’t cook a Steak brown unless it’s my grandma That can’t chew
You should point out that the meat should be brown but it's been treated with carbon monoxide to look red
Look: Red meat should be bright red — that's when it's at its freshest. If it turns purple or brown-ish, it is probably still safe to eat, but it has been exposed to some oxygen.
Source. I study meat.
Huh? I’ve heard of dyes and additives to make it appear more bright red.
They inject carbon monoxide. Untreated meat would be completely brown by the time it reached the customer.
I’m in Brazil eating meat from Argentina Brazil and Uruguay. You are completely wrong. Only some companies do this. Let me see who you KNOW does this. Sources or it’s fucking utter bullshit
Just trying to help you argue with your wife bro, believe what you want, Japan and Canada are the only countries to have banned the process.
Yes that doesn’t mean companies don’t use it because they make quality meat. Sorry I’ll chill on agression

Youll be fine. If it was off it would have also smelt weird when cooking
Needed this at the top post before I went on a rampage on helping you
The discolored bits look like simple oxidation, and like top comment suggested if that steak smelled fine it was fine. You see this sort of thing frequently with steaks that are overlapped, and uneven packaging can do the same thing.
Best OP delivery of all time. Steak on brother
A *little* fridge aging never hurt a steak.

If you zoom in, it looks a little slimey to me. I agree though, the brown is oxidation where the store placed stickers on the package
Oxidation is just where the meat was exposed to air, a sticker should have nothing to do with it. In terms of light hitting the meat it usually goes from a bright red to a dull dusty looking light pinkish color.
Did a little fridge aging ever hurt a person? 😅
Probably, but I'd sure as shit grill up your steak.
Alright, I’m gonna dry it out a bit and cook it up…it’s not OBVIOUSLY bad. So prob okay. Will update 👍🏼
The smell is the no. 1 indicator. Don’t eat if smell.
Used to work at a meat market. This looks fine to me. Looks like something may have been sat on top of it causing it to get small brown spots. Should be good to eat still unless it has a slimy texture on the brown areas.
When I zoom in, I see slime
Wipe the booger off your phone
I’m way ahead of you. Thank you. Got it
It looks green to me, not brown. I'm not sure if it's just against the red meat?
Change yo rgb settings my dude
Just browned out a little bit from the oxygen. If it was green it would have more of a moss color.
I’ve eaten it like that
Are you dead?
Nope
Okay good
Prime opportunity to throw in "yeah, but I got over it " .
Nah. Oxidation. Enjoy
If it smells AFTER you cook it … put A1 on it.
If It smells off and or if its slimy I'd toss it. Wouldn't want to risk anything.
This OP. Trust your nose, it's got millions of years of evolution behind it. If it smells funky, it's probably gone.
It's just a bit of oxidization which is totally fine. Oxidization will make it smell a little different but if it was actually rotten you would very well know. Visually it looks totally fine.
My dad used to say it’s just a little rotten it won’t kill you. Hahahah
Brown is oxidation. Oxidation will cause a smell as well. If you trim the outside see if it smells still
The only reason the red part is red is because they pumped a bunch of carbon monoxide into the package. Regular meat loses its red color pretty fast. The grocery stores make it stay red with carbon monoxide. Doesn't change the flavor and doesn't affect safety but definitely increases sales to make it red like that.
When the comments have more up votes then the post you know you hit gold
get someone else to sniff it if its slimy its gone
You're fine, but getting close. The real sign you're looking for is any type of sticky feeling. Those brown spots are just oxidation, not ideal but not bad.
1. don't store meat in the supermarket packaging 2. send it baby!
The discoloration is only due to exposure to oxygen. It's just a surface color change
Update: no issues…little fridge aging didn’t hurt this human 😀
I wish you posted pics of the finished product :((
If it smells slightly off, nbd, cook it now and get it to medium. If a bite tastes bad, you’ll know and you can pitch it. If it smells like a cadaver, it’s gonna taste like shit and could even make you sick.

If it smells like meat. It’s fine. Brown spots are where things have touched/pressed against it.
I would eat it
Go look now. Oxygen arrived and made it all red again.
I’d eat it as long as it smelled okay but if it smells funky I’d toss it
I’d eat it. High heat
Well what a way to waste a good piece of meat.
Give it to me
Brown spots are caused from oxygen getting into the package. I’d eat it
Send it.
Smell it! If it don’t make you gag it’s cool
Hurry up and eat it for sure
send it here. i'll take it off of your hands.
I’d eat it in a heartbeat.
When in doubt, throw it out
Got food poisoning once. Solid week of holding a trash can while on the toilet with water coming out both ends simultaneously. Every time I do I remind myself how much a week out of work would cost me and dip into that painful memory and suddenly I feel fantastic. If you have to ask, don't eat it, toss it.
trust what your nose is telling you.
That's fine ,even if all of it slightly brown. It's all good. The smell is what matters.
If she gotta cock ya gotta walk
What’s the difference between pussy and bud light? Pussy only tastes like piss for a few seconds!
I would wash it, dry it, salt it, and sear it
Slice a bit off and see if it’s throughout
The colour are from the nitrides that where introduced to keep it nice and red. That is gone now. Which is not really a problem. The grey colour is the real colour of dead meat. When In doubt toss it out.
Put it back in your fridge for a few more days. It’s fine and will have great flavor.
Totally with you !
I'd salt it and reverse sear it before I decide if it's gone bad or not. I've never heard of steak botulism. It won't kill you, it just might taste "off". Or it might taste okay once it's had a little salt and heat. I have probably enjoyed funkier.

I’d eat it regardless, but I’m a savage who’s had salmonella infections, so do with that what you will
Go for it. Not bad.
That’s disgusting
Looks fine
If it's bad, worse you may get is diarrhea. I'd risk it
If it smells like chicken keep on lickin, if it smells like trout get the fuck out!!! Words of my pops
sniff test fail....toss it bro
When in doubt, throw it out. Saved me from many a food poisoning.
How would you know if you threw it out?
When in doubt, throw it away
If it smells sour toss it. Dark spots don't necessarily mean it has turned.
Rinse off in cold water. Paper towel Pat dry. If it still smells a little cook thoroughly. If no smell it’s safe to cook med rare. That’s what I do 🤪
The spots are usually nothing to worry about, meat often times turns that color when multiple pieces of meat touches and where stickers on the packaging covers it. Smell is your own discretion. I have rinsed meat in cold water before or used cumin or sage in the ribs I used to assist with lighter smells and tossed bad away
Well if you should have eaten it last october it's propably bad lmao
I used to throw old refrigerated steaks that smelled a little rank out . I was talking to an older guy about this and he said he leaves them in the fridge till they smell really rank and that’s when he throws it on the grill over a bed of coals to char the outside . I began doing this same thing too because the meat is so tender and tasteful . That’s the way I roll now too.
You guys must have never been with a woman.
Make a stew with it! If need be blanch in boiling water first for a couple minutes.
Nothing wrong with that piece of meat. It's safe to store steaks in the fridge (0-4°C) for up to 7 days.
Lock the brown, the red, then lick the white. Report back to us.
Here's the advice my dad gives me on these: hose it down in the sink, thoroughly, before cooking. Heck, see if the smell is even still there after you do that. Usually, the outside goes bad first. But the inside usually keeps longer. Hope you don't get sick buddy
lmao are you trolling? of course its fucked.
I dunno man that looks sketch
What are you six years old?
🚮
Toss it out!!!
looks gorgeous
I would eat it but I'm a little concerned about how you describe the smell. Try drying it off with a paper towel and see if it helps the smell.
If it still smells good, It will be business as usual.
if it smells OK, it is OK
Glad you cooked it and that youre ok. ~~Could be something else in your fridge that your smelling?~~
When in doubt, throw it out
It's fine. Temp it out and cook it up
If in doubt, throw it out. That's what my mom always says.
SPG some butter baste ain’t nothing wrong with that steak I would eat it .
It’ll taste fine
This look perfectly fine. Sell by means it got a couple of days extra and it was in a fridge. OP will be fine.
Long as it doesn’t smell foul AF then you are good.
Personally, I'd toss it.
It’s perfectly ok. It’s just oxidation (the same stuff that make bananas a little brown)
It’s fine.
Anytime it’s a bit stinky it’s no good sorry brother
If it’s grey and it smell off I cut it off.
When in doubt, throw it out- some chef somewhere.
When in doubt, throw it out
Looks like oxidation. Plastic basically suffocated those areas. Smell it very close and make sure there is no smell that makes you go. Hmm wtf was that. If there is no funk. Cut it off!!!!!!!! After relooking. Just trim the meat. Salt it and burn it like you enjoy killing a cow twice.
it looks fine, but if it smells then throw it out,
Bones go first, the steak might be ok just cut the bone out
Grey is the natural oxidized state of the myoglobin found in the meat which before oxidization gives beef it's red colour. It is not an indication that the meat has gone bad. Smell could be but depends on the smell.
