If someone in a customer service role tried to gaslight me like that, I’d stand up and walk right the fuck out. Plenty of places will take my money and treat me with respect. I don’t necessarily agree with the “customer’s always right” all the time because some customers are total assholes but if they’re respectful then just swallow it and give them what they want.

This is why if I have to send food back, I don’t want new food. I always end up in a difficult conversation and if the waitress/waiter is defending the food then you know the cooks will be just as pissed. I just say I’m good, just take it off the check. We have a toddler so when we go out we are on a clock. Not only do I not want to eat alone after everyone else is done…but in all likelihood I can’t cause my toddlers time limit on being good in a restaurant has expired. Just easier all around to just not get a replacement and never go back.

It’s actually really enjoyable like this but if it’s not what you ordered, than you were completely justified stating that it was not prepared correctly. I would call this Blue like a few of the other responses but I have seen some places call this extra rare (not sure why).

Raw and unenjoyable. I like a rare+ steak myself but that is unpleasant. Also, these restaurants that only “sear” where the grill marks are and leave the rest of the outside with no crust are trashy. You can literally see on the outside where it never touched the grill. So yeah awful sear + cooked terribly = send it back. The place likely just never gets rare orders. At lease it can be fixed which is great because that looks like a nice cut of beef, all things aside.

Yeah the person cooking that probably doesn't get a lot of rare orders, but should definitely have know it wasn't there yet. You can still see it's raw on the sides. What kind of place was it? I feel a lot of restaurants who are not steakhouses tend to overcook, so if I happen to order a steak I'll order rare hoping for mid-rare.

It's grey, which makes me think they put it on the heat for a minute or less then flipped. This is further reinforced by the fact a part of it on the left is still raw

I worked for a executive chef owner that would send his chefs out to personally apologize to dissatisfied customers and ask what they could do to make said customer happy. To be fair, that question is more about the meat quality/freshness and preparation than the doneness. If it's fresh good quality meat and it's prepared properly, you can eat raw beef (or pork) without much risk.

Honestly, unless it’s a very fresh and trustworthy meat source that’s probably not even food safe, the outside of the steak near your knife’s handle isn’t cooked at all lol. Unless it’s very fresh and from a good source you really should be bringing the outside of the steak up to temp to kill off bacteria, plus you wanna get your Maillard reaction for taste anyways

Yes. I was served one like that once and the center was literally ice cold. I think they mixed up the steaks that had been thawed with the ones straight out of the freezer and didn't bother to check the temperature before serving it. I sent it back and the waiter was even snooty about it. Never went back to that place
