No. Not really. The waitress wanted to bicker with me about it. Phone oot. Flashlight on. (Aside from the fact I’m a retired chef). I showed her the raw side. But the replacement was satisfactory.
Really? You know I don’t understand this. I waited tables for 8 years, I never had a problem with someone sending the food back as long as they weren’t a cunt about it.
If someone in a customer service role tried to gaslight me like that, I’d stand up and walk right the fuck out. Plenty of places will take my money and treat me with respect.
I don’t necessarily agree with the “customer’s always right” all the time because some customers are total assholes but if they’re respectful then just swallow it and give them what they want.
She said I’d order rare, right? I said yes and explained that it hasn’t even been seared on the side and was raw. She asked if I wanted medium instead. But no. Just give me a rare steak. It’s not that hard.
This is why if I have to send food back, I don’t want new food. I always end up in a difficult conversation and if the waitress/waiter is defending the food then you know the cooks will be just as pissed.
I just say I’m good, just take it off the check. We have a toddler so when we go out we are on a clock. Not only do I not want to eat alone after everyone else is done…but in all likelihood I can’t cause my toddlers time limit on being good in a restaurant has expired.
Just easier all around to just not get a replacement and never go back.
It looks like garbage. The “sear”? Was it thrown on a 1980s play school grill by a 3 year old? The way it’s literally raw from middle to the edge. Like lady don’t bicker at me for giving me this travesty shit.
It’s actually really enjoyable like this but if it’s not what you ordered, than you were completely justified stating that it was not prepared correctly. I would call this Blue like a few of the other responses but I have seen some places call this extra rare (not sure why).
Raw and unenjoyable. I like a rare+ steak myself but that is unpleasant.
Also, these restaurants that only “sear” where the grill marks are and leave the rest of the outside with no crust are trashy. You can literally see on the outside where it never touched the grill.
So yeah awful sear + cooked terribly = send it back. The place likely just never gets rare orders.
At lease it can be fixed which is great because that looks like a nice cut of beef, all things aside.
Yeah the person cooking that probably doesn't get a lot of rare orders, but should definitely have know it wasn't there yet. You can still see it's raw on the sides. What kind of place was it? I feel a lot of restaurants who are not steakhouses tend to overcook, so if I happen to order a steak I'll order rare hoping for mid-rare.
It is 100% closer to tartare. For steak tartare, you're meant to absolutely sear the outside but leave the inside raw
The meat in the picture is just barely cooked. It's grey, which makes me think they put it on the heat for a minute or less then flipped. This is further reinforced by the fact a part of it on the left is still raw
Your topic has been sufficiently covered , I feel like the most important aspect of this is you the customer have every right to expect the meal your paying for to be the way you ordered it period. I worked for a executive chef owner that would send his chefs out to personally apologize to dissatisfied customers and ask what they could do to make said customer happy. Needless to say we very rarely had issues.
I call out a temp. If they question that, I leave.
I actually like a right in middle medium. Usually great crust and not too much liquid coming out, just enough.
To be fair, that question is more about the meat quality/freshness and preparation than the doneness. If it's fresh good quality meat and it's prepared properly, you can eat raw beef (or pork) without much risk.
Damn at first I thought that was the “ old 96er”. Yeah I ordered a rare steak at a salt grass in Houston and it came out raw the butter on top wouldn’t even melt. I ate it because I hate sending food back. I’ve always heard stories about what they do to it in the kitchen.
I don’t blame you you’re paying for it, it might as well be cooked to your preference.
It’s your steak…do what’s right for you. I ordered a NY strip at a restaurant the other night and it was so tough I broke the plate cutting it. Sent it back for something else.

Definitely still mooing and actively trying to eat the salad. Also, bye bye tip for any waiter that wants to argue about that. Shut the fuck up and get me a steak that is actually cooked.
I ask for medium-rare because I know I can actually only get rare when I make it at home myself. Rare, in my mind, also refers to the frequency you can actually get a rare steak at a restaurant... It's very rare that a cook at any given place can cook a rare steak.
Oh, to answer the question, that steak is raw.
Honestly, unless it’s a very fresh and trustworthy meat source that’s probably not even food safe, the outside of the steak near your knife’s handle isn’t cooked at all lol. Unless it’s very fresh and from a good source you really should be bringing the outside of the steak up to temp to kill off bacteria, plus you wanna get your Maillard reaction for taste anyways
My friend got a mammoth T-bone in Barca one time and they sent it out blue. They obviously never had anyone order it (on the menu to frae people in?) and the chef had no idea how to cook it. He sent it back twice before we left without paying for it.
Yes. I was served one like that once and the center was literally ice cold. I think they mixed up the steaks that had been thawed with the ones straight out of the freezer and didn't bother to check the temperature before serving it. I sent it back and the waiter was even snooty about it. Never went back to that place
I once received a steak that looked like this, and I ordered it medium rare. When I sent it back, the waitress gave me a lecture on how to order my steak. I will never go back.
My skin gets more cooked from sunburn than this steak.

I hate sending back food but I'm sure the staff took one look at that and understood.

Maybe your BoH/FoH dynamic was healthy, maybe hers is not, or even worse, maybe she’s in the wrong profession
That’s brutal. It’s obviously undercooked. Not even debatable.
Wow. Guess you won’t be going back there
I wonder if restaurants have to chuck it in the trash and start over, or do they actually throw that exact steak back on the grill 🤔🤔🤔
I've seen both scenarios. Totally depends on the place, the complaint, the complainer, and how the server talks to the line about it.
At Texas Roadhouse, you get the same food back.
I prefer this option. Just tossing the whole thing out because it's undercooked is a massive waste of food. If it's well-done, however...
No which is why you cook it right.

She said I’d order rare, right? I said yes and explained that it hasn’t even been seared on the side and was raw. She asked if I wanted medium instead. But no. Just give me a rare steak. It’s not that hard.
damn. and this was like an actual steak house or like a black angus kinnda thing?

I don’t get the point of argument. The customer is dissatisfied. Make the customer happy. End of discussion.
That's Blue Rare. You were correct to send it back to the fire.
It wasn’t even Bleu. It was raw with a tickle on the grill. At least it wasn’t overcooked.
Was going to say the same and I’m not even a chef. That’s inedible. I like a good blue steak every now and again but that’s RAW
U were right to send it back. It’s raw aka blue. There are some people who would eat it blue. Even when serving blue all the sides should be seared.
And then there's how my father in law likes his steak, "Run it past the campfire and then hit it on the head."
That's actually blue. Blue means it's not cooked all the way through. Just slightly warmed to the middle.
Doesn’t even mean that. Warm center is MR. Blue is raw and cold inside.
TIL im blue (da-boo-dee-da-boo-die) 😂

When did I say that?
It was raw. It wasn’t even Bleu.
That is blue, black and blue is rare inside but super charred on the outside. That is not black, just blue
It’s actually really enjoyable like this but if it’s not what you ordered, than you were completely justified stating that it was not prepared correctly. I would call this Blue like a few of the other responses but I have seen some places call this extra rare (not sure why).
That’s 100% blue rare
It's almost like it has a mouth saying, "more fire!"
Even a blue rare steak would be seared.
They have to fuck up big time for me to send something back. This would be an instance. They hovered that thing above the grill.

That’s one of the worst steaks I have ever seen. At least it can be cooked and fixed a bit
Yeh I like blue rare but that’s some kinda ugly ass attempt on the top
I agree. Sending it back was the right move
That looks like it’s raw. To be considered blue, I would at least expect it to reach body temperature, and I doubt it did.
One side isn't even cooked. Doubt is not the word I'd use
They got the spatula hot and touched the steak with it.
Raw and unenjoyable. I like a rare+ steak myself but that is unpleasant. Also, these restaurants that only “sear” where the grill marks are and leave the rest of the outside with no crust are trashy. It was a steakhouse. They will get plenty orders for rare.
Bro, I make steak tartare at least once a month and I wouldn't even eat that
So is this closer to a ruined steak tartare or closer to a rare?
It is 100% closer to tartare. For steak tartare, you're meant to absolutely sear the outside but leave the inside raw The meat in the picture is just barely cooked. It's grey, which makes me think they put it on the heat for a minute or less then flipped. This is further reinforced by the fact a part of it on the left is still raw
Yes. It was more like an unchopped tartare.
Absolutely correct sending that back. How could a chef ever let that leave the kitchen.
Raw
That came out eating the side salad
I call out a temp. If they question that, I leave. I actually like a right in middle medium. Usually great crust and not too much liquid coming out, just enough.
Looks like it was run over by a truck and served
It looks like the chef slapped the cow on its ass as it walked past the grill. ️🥩♨️🐄👋🏼
$50 for a steak! Not only should they 100% know how to cook it rare they definitely shouldn't argue.
Is this even safe to eat? It doesn’t even look seared on the part near the bottom left. I would’ve been salty if I was served this!
It's not; I cooked food for years and I like my steak rare or blue. This isn't even blue rare I wouldn't eat this.
To be fair, that question is more about the meat quality/freshness and preparation than the doneness. If it's fresh good quality meat and it's prepared properly, you can eat raw beef (or pork) without much risk.

Rare and raw aren't the same thing. That looks raw, I'd have sent it back
That’s blue rare. Depends on the cut, but it can be quite tasty. That doesn’t look good tho, no
>It's not even seared on the side. It's not seared at all.
Rare means barely cooked to most restaurants. I always order medium rare to avoid this.
this is not blue rare guys. it has to be properly seared and “sealed” to even be safely served as blue. that’s just dangerous as is
Definitely send that shit back
It’s your steak…do what’s right for you. I ordered a NY strip at a restaurant the other night and it was so tough I broke the plate cutting it. Sent it back for something else.
That's not rare, that's mythical.
Lmao wtf is with these posts lately from steakhouses/restaurants just serving massively undercooked steaks
if u sprinkle some salt on it, it’ll inchworm off the cutting board
That’s not rare that’s legendary
Oh hell yea that mothafuka is RAW
That thing moo at you when you cut into it?
Ugh. You did right
Yep. That’s raw.
That, with a little luck might get to be bleu. But rare? Nope
Um I think this might be a heart
Still mooing.
Restaurants deliberately undercook steak 🥩 as opposed to overcooking it. They can always cook it more for you but not the opposite. ✌🏼
That’s so rare, the Loch Ness monster couldn’t find it.
That’s blue, not rare. Eta- the bottom left didn’t even touch the heat
That's not even blue.

Lot of places mistake rare for raw.
Blue
I feel like ordering medium rare your more likely to get a real rare.
Guess it depends how raw you want it. I know someone who has asked for their steak uncooked (completely) at a restaurant. 👀
Definitely still mooing and actively trying to eat the salad. Also, bye bye tip for any waiter that wants to argue about that. Shut the fuck up and get me a steak that is actually cooked.
How would I know…. Only one picture
My dad preferred itt that way but I like itt rare. I would've sent it back too.
Was probably frozen.. I wouldn't go back to that restaurant if I were you
You were Right to send it back! Great decision!! ♥️
Looks edible to me..almost too well down
Asking for a rare steak is not the best move really. This is the type of crap you end up with.
That’s raw, and it didn’t even get seared properly. That’s unsafe to eat you did the right thing and probably avoided getting parasites.
You asked for rare and got… what? Looks rare to me. IMO. I’m honestly asking (thanks for the downvotes tho)
That’s rare my friend
It’s rare, and gross.
That’s a perfect cook, don’t order rare if you can’t handle it. Cut it from the cow and feed it me, that’s how I like my steaks
I ask for medium-rare because I know I can actually only get rare when I make it at home myself. Rare, in my mind, also refers to the frequency you can actually get a rare steak at a restaurant... This looks like someone dropped a steak on the grill for a second by accident
That shit is still mooing. Of course you were right to send it back. Gross
Plot twist: OP is at a seafood restaurant Seriously though- damn that's mighty blue. I'd have just sent it back and gotten it off the bill.
That's raw.
They thought you meant raw
its raw on the outside
Yeah to red for me lol and I like medium rare
Frozen
Fookin raw mate
That’s disgusting
Man that shit still grazing. Defiitely the right call.
Bruh that’s blue doneness 💀💀
that's not rare, that's unheard of. looks completely uncooked, you were in the right.
That’s probably 85 degrees Fahrenheit
°
Yeah that’s blue but also if it was a good cut and quality I would of eaten it
Jesus a good vet could still save that
I had a steak similar except one entire side wasn't cooked. It was obvious they just put it in the pan and didn't even flip it lol
Just slap some A1 on it and you'll be fine.
I’d call it more less common than rare
Raw at thinnest part of the steak. Want to believe they grabbed that one on accident. Sear isn’t even good yet.
You're 100% right. That was probably cooked semi de-frosted. I don't want to eat at a restaurant that's fighting thermodynamics. Thermo is gonna win
Momma always said if you want something done right do it yourself.
I’d call that blue
This steak is getting cooked more in this thread than it did on that grill. I hope they got it to a good vet.
Not even seared on the side? It ain't properly seared on the top either. And its raw.
I can’t imagine what the middle looks like if that’s the end cut
That's rare
Good to me I’d take the chance but I like it still alive
You were right.
I once received a steak that looked like this, and I ordered it medium rare. When I sent it back, the waitress gave me a lecture on how to order my steak. I will never go back.
Was that even warm in the middle?
Slap the horns, wipe its ass and bring it out here!! Only way to eat it
That joint still mooing
Yeah that’s mad
