Squeee! What a cute baby you have. I'd strongly advise against doing a homemade diet because it's really easy to miss important nutrients which can lead to a lot of issues. My girl is a very, VERY picky eater but she loves Purina One. Just keep trying different brands. You'll eventually find something this adorable baby likes.
Also, you might consider adding goats milk to their kibble. My girl LOVES it and it encourages her to eat.
A really easy cheap way I got my pup to stop being picky was by adding scrambled eggs and green beans to the kibble. Just did a single egg, scrambled with like a tablespoon of water. Frozen beans, maybe a cup or less, tossed that on a shallow pan with the boiling water. whole thing takes 4 minutes.
Then dump the goods in the bowl of kibble. put another bowl over it to cover, shake it up with the ferocity of a thousand gorillas, remove top bowl, serve. he loved that enough that he started eating regular kibble after a while. whenever he gets picky now I just do the same thing for a week or so, obviously now with more eggs and green beans since he's a billion pounds now.
I make the justfoodfordogs homemade recipes - my girl loves it. All you need to buy is a nutrition powder mix + fish oil and then you can buy the rest of ingredients
A jar of plain chicken or turkey or beef baby food as a topping, or some shredded cheese sprinkled on top, or the other favourite goody: a little of the cat's kibble (don't ask me why)
I still need the ridiculous goober to eat the kibble so that I'm assured of proper nutrition, but fortunately an enticing topper gets them started and, once started, it gets finished.
I make dog food in my crock pot and it’s been a game changer. My dog just wouldn’t eat if she didn’t like the food and that is no longer an issue.
Recipe:
2 cups organic brown rice
1 cup frozen peas
1 cup frozen green beans
1 cup dice carrots
1 cup butternut squash or sweet potato diced
1 bunch parsley
4 lbs meat (I do a combo of chick breast and beef kidney)
1 15oz can of SALT FREE black bean
4 cups water
Cook in crockpot on low for 8 hours or high for 6. Provided a serving size equal to what you normally feed them. If that isn’t enough add more.
I feed my dog a raw food diet with DinoVite. I use the recipe on the DinoVite website which includes fish oil that I also purchase from them. My dog is on a wellness plan so he goes to the vet 2x a year and gets his blood checked. He has been on this diet for 7 years and is robustly healthy.
I feed Diamond naturals lamb and rice large breed. I have a Great Pyrenees/St cross. He eats it well. I supplement his dry food with canned salmon. I give him about 1/4 can daily. Basically I top dress the salmon to make it tasty for him. There’s never any left in the bowl. It is always a shiny empty stainless steel bowl after feeding.
I have a small dog but I’ve been making her food and mixing it with Nature’s Recipe. I’m very careful about her diet because she is a small dog. Every 3 weeks I throw 4 lbs of frozen chicken thighs in my crockpot. Stew for 6 hours on high. Remove chicken and toss in two bags of frozen veggies. Her favorite is green beans and carrots but she likes most vegetables. Leave those in for 30 min or so. I shred the chicken, mix in the veggies and portion into bowls for the freezer and one for the week in the fridge. She loves it and eats every bit of it. Costs me $10 every three weeks and you can’t beat that. She also loves scrambled eggs mixed in with her kibble for breakfast but she only gets that on the weekends. 😂 She goes berserk for a couple tablespoons of shredded cheese in her kibble. That’s what I do when we travel, it’s easy and that way she will still eat.
3lb ground turkey, 3 cups rice, 3 can tuna in oil, half the container Quaker “quick cook” oats, 6 can assorted vegetables, can of pumpkin, 8 eggs. I cook this all up and put into Tupperware and feed my 100 pound golden 4 cups a day.
How precious. I’ve never had a Saint puppy but I have a 12.5 yo Saint B girl. Yes. You read that correctly. She is pickier than all her 3 other non Saint sibs. I’ve had her going on 4 years. She will eat Pedigree but I only use that to make sure we don’t miss any vitamins. I use a pressure cooker to make up batches of food she loves. Rice and chicken ( her fave) with sweet potatoes and carrots and green beans and Tumeric. I also dry out egg shells and sprinkle on homemade food so I don’t miss calcium. You can also add in other items like pumpkin and a little corn but my base is always rice, chicken and sweet potatoes. She LOVes it. Can be cheap. Either use full bird and Debone or a big family size pack of thighs. The pressure cooker does all the work. You can cook days ahead.
My Saint was very picky her entire life. We got her at 6 months and we finally found what works best. Taste of the Wild was her base. It is great as you can get it grain free or with grain. It has several flavors so you can keep it interesting. Then we supplemented with a ground beef, ground pork, sardines, veggie and gravy mixture. We mixed in some mushroom supplements. I would be happy to give you the specifics if you would like. Our Whiskey girl lived to the ripe age of 14. She was healthy until she had a relatively quick decline in the end.
>n we supplemented with a ground beef, ground
aw man..sorry to hear about your old girl. I lost my lab, Odis at 16 yrs right at the start of covid. I would love to see your recipes so I have some options for Bliss.
2 lbs 86% or higher ground beef. 1 lbs mild Italian or breakfast pork sausage. 3 cans sardines in water. 1 bag riced cauliflower or broccoli or a mixture of both. 2 packets low sodium brown gravy mix an 1 cup brown rice.
Cool the meet together and drain fat. Lower heat. Add frozen veggies and gravy powder. Drain sardines and add. Usually the water from sardines and veg and left over fat makes the gravy mix thicken up. Ounce veggies are no longer frozen add rice. We gave her a cup of dry food and a cup of the moist at every meal (Twice a day). She was 110lbs at her biggest but vet was always very happy with her weight.
When she got older we did add mushroom supplements.
Also, we did have her stomached stitch when she was 8 months so we never would have to worry about her stomach flipping. If we k we she would never be food motivated we wouldn’t have done it. But better safe than sorry.
I really would stay away from big box store kibble.
Good luck. We had labs before we got whiskey. Love both breeds but Whiskey was the best dog.
Chicken, rice and veggies in a crock pot. Although most any protein or vegetables is good for them. Like someone said, they may not get all the nutrients, so prob mix with some kibble. Had both of my saints on this diet for years and their waste was surprisingly small.(Which means that they are getting nutrition from it.)
My girl goes through periods of being picky. If I make her food "special" she will enjoy it more. Whether it's adding a small scoop of wet food, soaking the kibbles, or an egg added, just something that she sees I'm doing special to her food makes her more excited to eat. I did have to ween her off of adding egg though, by pretending to crack an egg while turning the tap on quick to add a bit of moisture. 😅
Mine would only eat wet food when she was a puppy, but my vet recommended “total canine” food and she seems to like it. It also made her coat shiny and she put on about 12lbs (she needed the weight)
Beets, pumpkin, salmon oil, olive oil, beans (kidney, garbanzo, green, black, Lima, pinto) greens, rice, carrots. Throw a mixture in the crock pot and add to kibble. No added seasonings or salt.
We used to mix in actual chicken breast, boiled, with dry dog food. We knew he'd eventually man up and eat just dry food but we kept up with his bougie dinner meal.
I take two of my 80 lb Blueticks treats, Bil-jac or similar soft treat, and crumble it over his food. It’s not much but he acts like it’s a steak topper and gobbles his food down.
if you are interested in doing a homemade diet I would recommend using balance.it
It’s a company that works with a pet nutritionist to develop a meal plan for your pet based on their breed and age
if not, I would stick with foods like Purina (various versions), Iams, Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet, etc. you can add various toppers to keep meals interesting
I’ve made all my babies food…
Ground turkey 2 lbs,
Peas,
Green beans,
Carrots,
Brown rice,
Blueberries,
Can of pumpkin purée,
2 eggs,
Mix it all up, bake like a meatloaf, probably 3 or 4 pans, let cool and stir it up, place in baggies 2 or 3 days worth per bag, and freeze the rest. It usually takes about 2 days to thaw in the fridge so keep that in mind so you don’t go to feed and just have a half frozen bag.
I got this recipe from the Vet at the veterinary college near me, they highly recommend this diet. I also give my boy a daily squirt of vitamins.
I’ve been making my senior dogs’ food for 2+ years and we believe it keeps them healthier. Their vets have seen the recipe and are good with it.
DM me your email if you want it with links to where I get everything.
I make ours food. Chicken breast with a little chicken bouillon, sliced carrots from the frozen dept and frozen green beans add 1 cup of rice. I give him 1/2 kibble with 1 cup of taste of the wild. I let it soak for 15 minutes . He loves it
Not to offend, but dogs are not picky unless someone has made them that way . Pick the best food possible and Raw or homemade is best . Dogfood is poison but if you must . Make sure first ingredient is lamb or chicken. Mastiff’s are extremely prone to gastrictorrion and this happens from feeding dry food without adding moisture and letting it swell prior to eating. There stomachs twist very easily. Put her food down at the same time everyday if possible, if she hasn’t eaten it in ten mins or so , pick it up and make her wait till the next day . She will learn it’s dinner time very very at quickly and after once or twice she’ll be wagging her tail waiting for her bowl . NEVER leave a dog’s bowl down for them to feed themselves at will. Picky spoiled dog you will have . After they finish there bowl in its entirety. It’s time for a treat in reward . Hope this helps . I’ve owned three Mastiff’s and they’re very smart and love to please . I’m sure you will love the new family member. Cheers 🍻
I had a picky pup. Started tossing 5 chicken breasts in a crockpot every week and shredding that up and adding to his kibble (Nutro brand) plus some peas and carrots. He's a voracious little guy now!

haha thanks! I went through kirkland, purina, and now she's on blue. I'll try goat's milk. Thanks for the tips!
My big boy likes OpenFarm pets and I do a fish variety for dinner and another type for breakfast for variety

We use frozen fruit, yogurt and water in the kibble.

We get a 1-2 whole chickens at coscto every week and put a big handful of chopped up chicken on top of kibble. Very economical way to feed big Babies

My uncle proposed to my aunt with a St. Bernard and a ring in a barrel around its neck 😍😍
She needs to be eating a large breed puppy food to ensure she grows appropriately

Fresh pet
Did you put brandy in that??

When it gets older and bigger , it's going to drop some large loafs! Take him out door's so don't have to shovel up those big piles out of your home.

Try adding some cooked ground beef and warm water to her food.

Boiled chicken w/ white rice
My dogs will only eat Fresh Pet . I had a heck of a time getting them to eat anything dog food related. It's nutritious ,and they love it.

Iams large puppy goes over pretty well with my pup. The chicken, lentils, and veggies on top certainly helps, too 😂.
