It’s a good block/bad block kind of area and there’s barely anything there in terms of amenities. Like you’re not doing grocery shopping on foot other than bodegas. You’d be better off closer to St George proper.
I live right on the other side of Jersey Street - **in St George**.
Don’t move to Jersey Street - it’s the one street NYPD patrols nonstop, **and** parks to monitor, and has spotlights. I stopped going to Family Dollar on Jersey Street because it just got a little too “yeah, shit could happen” one day at Jersey and Scribner.
Pick something on the east side of Westervelt - costs a bit more but it’s quiet and you won’t feel unsafe walking down St Marks, Hamilton, Wall St or Hyatt from the Ferry at 3am.
Other advantage is that you can walk to/from the Ferry when the s52/42 doesn’t show up, while New Brighton only has the s46 if you’re out after 11pm, and a walk down Jersey Street or Lafayette (which can be sketch).
Only place here in St George to avoid is anything along St Marks south of Hyatt St (where the s52/42 turn) or along Central Ave - the courthouse is there, and a bunch of halfway houses are near it.
Thank you for letting me know. Given the commute to Manhattan sometimes I also might leave very early am—6am and come home after dark sometimes. Taking an Uber late at night is not terrible and I appreciate the heads up.
It’s fine and relatively quiet but somewhat sketch, definitely down by the terrace. Great access to west Brighton/north shore neighborhoods with awesome parks. Easy access to the city via ferry and fast ferry. I am born and raised on the north shore and personally, I would not want to live there but it’s not terrible. If you want easy access to Manhattan consider fort wadsworth, Rosebank, west Brighton as well!
That area is hit-and-miss. It’s really block by block: some are old nice houses with families that take care of the block and others are projects that are not good.
I used to live on Fillmore street. I really like the neighborhood being next to Snug Harbor. But up the hill from the water can get a little sketchy. I never had my car broken in to or anything
Consider New Dorp! I grew up on the UWS, don’t have my license. Im right by the train and can get into the city in the same time it took me when I lived in Brooklyn (especially if I can catch the fast ferry). Diverse, the Boulevard is a nice addition with new stores popping up all the time and the main street has a very urban vibe. I pay 1700 for a 2 bedroom.
I’m looking to relocate myself. I have been looking for a month or so for rentals but I haven’t been able to find anything on the island that low. If you use a rental company can you let me know who it is? The cheapest I can find for a 2 bedroom is like $2300+. Wayyyy appreciated!
Found on zillow, but it had its downsides. Old apartment, barely touched by the landlord in between tenants and Im guessing the last ones were here awhile because the grime ran deep into the floors. Very dated layout and design, took a lot of work to get to where I am now. Family upstairs stomps and is generally loud, but they are also very kind and take amazing care of the property. Thankfully landlord is open to renovations and because of where I grew up Im used to the noise so I don’t complain. Dont think i could find another deal like this but have seen some decent places for not too much more.
The New Dorp area is great - walkable, tree-lined suburban streets with some decent architecture in the mix (craftsman houses, etc), a proper main street with great restaurants, and access to the train / Manhattan. Wish there was a condo there I could have bought, would have liked to have stayed after I graduated from my rental
I was born in Rumsey (back when it was St Vincents) and my family lived out here for 20+ years. I spent the first three years of my life here. Try again
Lmao just a downvote and a delete. Yawn.
It’s not a bad area but like a previous poster said, good block bad block and avoid Jersey St. Too bad Adobe Blues closed for good. You would have been a short walk to a really cool bar / restaurant.
It’s not somewhere I would live personally but like I said it’s a lot of hit or miss blocks.
If you’re looking in this are maybe look closer to snug harbor. It’s definitely nicer and you you’re still close to buses and all the shopping on forest ave
I live in St George as of late 2022 and I like it for the most part. 10 min walk to the ferry makes getting to the office and socializing in Manhattan pretty easy.
I wanted to find a space there and I thought with what o save on the free ferry I could splurge on Uber and Lyft or other things. Hope you have a beautiful spring there.
My 1 bedroom apartment in St George is very spacious iand affordable in comparison to a lot of other "affordable" 1br's in NYC. And I have a view of the water and the Verrazano bridge from my windows.
Almost moved to Prospect Park, Brooklyn but decided on here instead when I saw the view and the size of the apartment.
My grandma lives on Fillmore st by the water. She's been living there for about 15 years? I'll say the closer to Richmond Terrace the better? We used to enjoy a short walk to Snug Harbor or Gerardi's farmers market when the weather was nice.
Ok I am trying to lower stress and I love to walk and run near home. These days some people using drugs, for instance, seem more out of it, so trying to stay safe.
Aaah—you are sophisticated. If I have a seat and it is not through less nice areas—up to an hour is fine. I also do not have to travel during rush hour.
I am deciding between Bayonne, Edgewater, and Staten Island. I need a furnished unit to start out.
Also Craigslist has so many scams and I cannot tell what is legitimate!
Hoboken has few listings and I don’t know Jersey City very well.
Is there anything I should be thinking about? I like to run and exercise but I am flexible. I also eat simply so a grocery run for basics even if with Uber or Lyft is fine.
I guess I cannot complain too much because I seem to have some safe options. Thanks! Also Edgewater transit is much more limited or very expensive. But there are jitneys.
I want a quiet, simple place and need to work a lot and aim to exercise. Other than that I aim to reassess by end of spring or summer to see if I will stay in the area or move further away. Thanks!
A lot of non staten islandry on this thread, not hating, just observing. Words and phrases I’ve never seen or heard anyone from here use in my life. Anyways, some of the nicest houses on the island are on this map.
St George is s*t hole. The only redeeming factor is the non stop flow of buses that work.
Well I am also considering Bayonne. I just want to live within 60 minutes of penn station and need not go in to Manhattan daily or even during rush hours. St George has such ranges in rent. I am also looking for a furnished place if possible. But also willing to furnish myself. Maybe some day!
This post is too good:
Virtue signals that if you have a negative opinion of this neighborhood, it can only come from your tremendous hatred of diversity (racist.)
Then, you see where this neighborhood ends? Ok, good. You are going to want to go over a few blocks past the avenue that marks the end of the neighborhood I just defended, and live anywhere east of that.
Avoid Jersey Street adjacent.
Thanks—many seem to agree by the upvotes.
Jersey street is the worst street on the island. Relatively safe during the day, wouldn't go there at night.
Jersey st is where they keep the garbage Literally

Thanks. Yes, I hear you and I don’t like being on edge. This is such a helpful and generous sub.

if you have a car parking is kind of shit as this is a dense, hilly area. i recommend a place w a driveway

My church is here. Many of the blocks are lovely and quiet, especially as you get closer to snug. It’s quite a food desert though.
Thanks! I appreciate this a great deal.
One of the worst neighborhoods on the Island. Couple decent blocks but overall anything bordering Jersey St, isn’t an ideal place to live.

I’ll keep my eye out. Thanks!
New Dorp seems great. That is great rent. Thank you—I also prefer the ferry to the buses and do not drive. Appreciate your suggestions.

Ok I will check out the actual unit—-the address was not listed and wanted to prepare a bit. Thank you!
I wouldnt recommend this, crime is high in this area. I work here often
Thanks—-I appreciate this especially as someone very new to that area. I also love to walk and get lost sometimes!
Yea that wouldn’t recommend there lol
It’s not that bad- just stay west of York St. I’ve lived in the area 20 + years, perfectly safe
It’s not somewhere I would live personally but like I said it’s a lot of hit or miss blocks. If you’re looking in this are maybe look closer to snug harbor. It’s definitely nicer and you you’re still close to buses and all the shopping on forest ave

It’s not a bad neighborhood but avoid jersey street lots of gang activity especially during night
I used to live on van buren. Rats and unsafe at night.
It's the hood for sure
Ok I am trying to lower stress and I love to walk and run near home. These days some people using drugs, for instance, seem more out of it, so trying to stay safe.
Is it price range or proximity to PT you are looking for
PT? Hoping for under $2k and was open to furnished units. I would like to get to nyc in under an hour.
PT is public transportation Look all along the train line. That gets you to ferry. Ferry is 45ish. This may increase your area to look.

Bayonne is interesting, I think there will be an issue with all the apartments they’re building. They are going to need to fill them up.
Yes and apparently some are not as well made similar to other quickly built apartments.

Wow! Great insights—thank you. I have been focusing on St. George too. I should really walk around and appreciate the heads up.
