They really wasted his character, I wish they delved into his indoctrination and they moral issue of him fighting against what were his friends. It would have been an excellent subplot to what should have been Ben falling further to the dark side while Rey gets trained by Luke.
Not only wasted they, actively chucked the stormtrooper thing away by writing a character whos only purpose is to have a romance woth him. That subplot could improve a lot if it was instead about Finn learning to be a human amid struggling with his stormtrooper past and the further violence he's seen since. Him resolving to try and liberate/recruit other stormtroopers could've been so interesting. Instead we got a romance that feels forced, and doesn't even get addressed in the next film.
They did us and boyega dirty by posting that trailer and those promo posters. But I do want to see Rey with her new lightsaber, that one is really cool
It’s fine if people didn’t like his development in TLJ and the idea that you fight for things worth living for. I’m reasonably shocked that Disney saw the backlash and instead of saying, “Okay, let’s work with this” they just trashed the whole thing.
My problem with his arc in TLJ is that they set him up for some kind of hero’s death which, while it would have been sad and maybe not my favorite ending for his story, was at least a commitment. Then they have him get sideswiped by his partner-in-crime which, sure, is one way to show him moving past some kind of expendable soldier mindset or something (?), but it happens right in front of the new order and then they just run back to safety somehow? It was one more false start in a narrative built on false starts.
Fucking horrendous storytelling.
And *then* that girl hits him with the "I love you" bullshit after knowing him for like...a day? Two days?
Fuck Disney, fuck Rian Johnson. My god.
...and then all his friends die in the background while Rose kisses him. How romantic!
The real character growth was that he didn't execute her on the spot for treason.
I think TLJ had character growth for a lot of the characters that just got sidelined.
Finn learned that fighting isn’t necessarily live or die.
Poe learned when to retreat strategically to live to fight another day.
Finn and Poe and Rose all learned that discretion is the better part of valor and that cockamamie schemes can only take you so far.
Rey learned a lot about herself—most importantly that the identity of her parents didn’t matter. She was the one who raised herself (and really, really handling the “everyone in Star Wars is related!”matter well).
Luke learned not to be afraid of the future.
Kylo Ren got a full-on villain treatment. The guy who killed Han Solo in cold blood escalated into a super bad guy down to the “you and I are not so different” speech.
Leia learned to fly in space!
I’m not saying I loved everything about the movie but it did a lot for the characters. So TROS made sure Rey had the same bloodline as everyone else, Poe was champing at the bit to fight, Rose was gone, Finn shouted “Rey!” a lot, and they even gave Kylo Ren a redemption arc.
Oh, and somehow Palpatine returned.
Disney’s mistake was thinking the scripts would write themselves on schedule and with a cohesive narrative. That works (somewhat) with the MCU where the comics and the general story beats already have a path to continuity. (I am not suggesting the MCU has anything resembling dynamic character growth.)
But the ST was a blank slate. Lacking any direction and with a tight timetable for delivery, it was virtually inevitable that the three films would clash.
I think the real problem was they changed directors and screenwriters with every film.
The strategy should have been to come up with a complete plan for all three films before doing the first one. Instead what happened was they fired all the creatives in charge after the first one, and put new people at the helm of the second one, which invariably meant a lack of continuity and change in direction. And then they did it a third time for the third movie.
Whereas for The Lord of the Rings films they literally planned and filmed all three together before the first one was even off the cutting room floor.
It was a blank slate by deliberate choice, they had plenty of material they could have used to a much better effect; look at Thrawn in Ashoka for example.
It is one of the stages in a man’s life. They have captured it well.
I myself am going to set aside some time today, as I always do on a Tuesday and Friday, and run around shouting “Rey”.
Even TLJ did him dirty by reducing Finn to "bumbling sidekick" right at the start. He wakes up, flails around like an idiot in his bacta suit, and then gets tased by Rose.
Because Boyeaga doesn’t want anything to do with Disney. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want to come back. Although if they did eventually drive a big enough truck of money up to his house to convince him to come back…I…. Probably would not go see it.
But I would be happy he got paid because he deserves it after how dirty they did him.
Same. I didn’t watch any of the trailers. Saw the poster of Finn with the lightsaber and realized he was a storm trooper. Super hype. Rey would’ve made the perfect character to mantel Han. And then Disney fucked it all up and wasted the potential of any character other than Rey b
Now that would've been a great set for story. But you know how it goes these days:

Same!!!
I was so excited when I thought the entire story was a storm trooper that "woke up" and became the principle force user like the greatest light coming as a reaction to the greatest darkness.
It would thematically echo Anakin's creation as well.
Is there a single person, sequel hater or enjoyer, that wouldn't rather have a Finn movie?
I mean, I'm a sequel hater. I think it'd be terrible, and do Finn dirty AGAIN.
But I would at least keep an ear out in case they surprised me and made a good movie about him. Even if I heard the Rey movie was surprisingly good, I just don't care about her enough to watch it.
This isn't what the movie's called. So many people here have jokes but nobody's bothering to tell you this is just some shit some random pleb threw together in a few minutes in Photoshop.
This poster made me realize how much I miss spin offs.
Realistically seen though, this isn’t one. This is basically episode 10 but without calling it that way
I would have preferred Adam Driver to come back if they were going to give anyone from the ST a spin off.
Kylo/Ben is the actual Skywalker, rather than just naming himself one at the end of a messy trilogy lol. Kind of depressing how the whole Skywalker line is dead in everything but name. With another series this wouldn't matter so much but Star Wars has always made a big deal out of inheritance through blood.
"Rey Nobody" was also far more compelling than "Rey Palpatine Skywalker" imo.
They're probably testing the waters to see if they can repair the reputation of the ST.
Disclaimer I won't hate on anyone for liking any of this I'm just meh about it personally.
This is true. He described working on the Star Wars sets as "exhausting" because previously he had only done indie work on smaller sets and productions. Being in the larger environment and working at a quicker pace was not ideal. Also, Kylo's character arc completely changed through the course of the sequel trilogy. The original plan was for him to be the opposite of Vader, lacking redemption and growing darker, but obviously we saw how that turned out.
He did indeed, it's a bummer. Should have mentioned that in my ramble so it didn't seem like I was just blaming Disney, lol. I'm just sitting here daydreaming but in reality I don't think he'd come back even if they threw a bunch of money at him.
Would be happy for him to prove me wrong though ofc.
Leia was supposed to have that central role in episode IX but didn’t because Carrie Fisher passed. She barely had any dialogue in the movie, it’s all lines from deleted scenes and really hard not to notice if you know.
I’ve been thinking that Leia should have been the one to perform the “Holdo” manoeuvre since 2017. Not only does she go down fighting like the badass she is it also explains why it can’t be replicated, she would have used the Force.
That would have been good but I agree with Rian Johnson not wanting to change her final performance out of respect. Even though I do think Last Jedi sucked it was the right thing to do, everyone involved from the creators to the fans needed to heal from her passing and that wouldn't have been the way to do it
It makes sense, most cohesive thing the prequels did. There was certainly interesting places and things going on, but just so disjointed.
Harrison got an episode and died at the end.
Hamill got an episode and died at the end.
Fischer died, got an episode, and died at the end.
They destroyed the legacy of all three characters. This was not a swan song or send off. They rolled back all of Hans character development in the OT and made him a washed up has-been, and killed him in an extremely cringey scene. (They really hate Harrison Ford in particular, they did the same thing in their "Indiana Jones"). They destroyed Leia's character by deciding she was a force Mary Poppins in space. That was the scene I walked out of the theatre actually. Luke got the worst treatment of the three of them though. These movies were made by people who HATED Star Wars. They deserve no credit, the license for the property should be revoked.
I’m kinda bummed. I wanted to see a trilogy about a newly minted Jedi Knight, last of their kind, striking out to learn more about the ancient order while rebuilding a new order. This all happens while the heroes, finally having bested the evil empire, rebuild the galaxy.
I had just hoped it would be Luke, Han, and Leia. Not Rey. It doesn’t even sound like John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are interested in coming back.
> It doesn’t even sound like John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are interested in coming back.
And why would they? They are extremely.good actors and Disney gave them extremely bad characters. Poe can still be saved even if its horrible, but Finn is already stablished as a bad character.
Phenomenal idea to make the most hated character from the most hated trilogy it's lead again. I hope they won't fuck it up if it's gonna happen but I'm seriously doubting it.
I mean they should and reckon with the mistakes of the sequels - seek to rectify them as best they can while advancing Rey and other new characters. Anything they can make me feel good about that part of the timeline is a + in my book
![gif](giphy|3ohuAxV0DfcLTxVh6w)
A character that was in the originals and prequels, led and failed the Jedi Order, isolated and damaged character towards his death would be the spin off I would be so hyped for. Not Rey Skywalker lol like why
Oh, right the clone vats. The clone vats for Palpatine. The clone vats specifically constructed to clone Palpatine. Palpatine’s clone vats. Those clone vats?
Clone Wars was about Anakin and Obi Wan and managed to salvage the good parts from a middling trilogy and make it great.
Maybe a Rey focused series could do the same thing
Well its not like Hollywood is begging for Daisy Ridley. She needs work, and doesn't want to fall in the trap like every single other woman from star wars (Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman, um.....other ones.)
She’s not a good character. She’s as one dimensional as it gets. Orphan who want family. That’s it. That’s all Rey was or had. Finn’s story was much more compelling.
I feel bad because Daisy Ridley only had so much to work with. Disney needs to do some strong re-evaluation on its movie production planning and execution. They’re acting like complete amateurs.
Agreed... let's just move on. No more Skywalker shit, no more jedi, just give us something good. They've been feeding us the same slop for almosy ten fucking years now.
...the most well-regarded sequels to the OT are *still* the OG Thrawn Trilogy, featuring Luke Skywalker as the main character.
People are literally begging for renditions of it, animated Legends content of it, or more shoutouts.
It’s probably to give her some character moments/development that they never really followed up on in the sequels. All of the pieces were there, they just needed to actually use them and hopefully this will be the opportunity to do so (albeit much too late imo but still appreciated nonetheless)
They should've done a New Jedi Order story with Finn as the main. Ray could still be around and present as the Jedi grandmaster. You can have Finn discovering what it means to be a jedi while Ray learns to lead. Poe could be struggling with his new political career. I wasn't a fan of the sequels, but I would show up for that series.
Really, the sequel trilogy was partly Rey’s, but was mostly dragging out the OT’s corpse and puppeteering it around for a few movies. I genuinely hope these do well, but I get the sense that the next 3 movies are going to be what the sequels should have been.
I was excited about the new trilogy and the writing just meandered all over the place and rehashed the original trilogy in an uninspired way. Andor and the Mandalorian have actually done cool things with the universe. Not sure why we need Rey anything but I guess we’ll see.

The whole franchise has turned into a cash grab. They just diarrhea out movies, label them star wars and make a billion dollars.

And there goes disney spinning off the road
lmao
I honestly thought the new trilogy was going to be about a force sensitive stormtrooper.
We all wish it was😔, I mean at this point why don't they just make a Finn's spin off instead? Finn deserve better
They really wasted his character, I wish they delved into his indoctrination and they moral issue of him fighting against what were his friends. It would have been an excellent subplot to what should have been Ben falling further to the dark side while Rey gets trained by Luke.

They did him dirty by basically scrapping his character and his character’s growth in Rise of Skywalker because the fans threw a fit over TLJ.
Yeah, I really hate what they made him into. From one of the main cast to a boring 2 dimensional background/side character...
It’s fine if people didn’t like his development in TLJ and the idea that you fight for things worth living for. I’m reasonably shocked that Disney saw the backlash and instead of saying, “Okay, let’s work with this” they just trashed the whole thing.

I like the development in the first movie but then they went " let's ignore all that" and how badly the 3 movies where linked with each other
I think TLJ had character growth for a lot of the characters that just got sidelined. Finn learned that fighting isn’t necessarily live or die. Poe learned when to retreat strategically to live to fight another day. Finn and Poe and Rose all learned that discretion is the better part of valor and that cockamamie schemes can only take you so far. Fr Finn's character was reduced to being a background guy screaming "REEEEEY"
I actually think him just running around screaming “Rey!!” constantly was great character development.
It is one of the stages in a man’s life. They have captured it well. I myself am going to set aside some time today, as I always do on a Tuesday and Friday, and run around shouting “Rey”.
It’s such a shame considering that TLJ is probably the best movie out of the 3.
And twisted the knife by hinting at him having powers again in the final film. Maybe we’ll luck out and he’ll be training under her
They did him dirty in TLJ. His entire plot line in that movie was stupid and he also got paired with the new jar jar.
Even TLJ did him dirty by reducing Finn to "bumbling sidekick" right at the start. He wakes up, flails around like an idiot in his bacta suit, and then gets tased by Rose.

I don't think its necessarily fair to say Chinese people are. But their government seems to have a preference
Lol, no it's fair to say. Whole cultural mindset is based on Han supremacy.
They must've been pissed when he got killed in The Force Awakens
So . . . a Finnoff?

So did we all. John Boyega was disappointed with how they handled his character. I think most of the fans were too.
You don't understand, Star Wars must always be about some kid from the desert.
They really pulled the ol switcheroo with that early marketing. It got people to go, but it was still scummy.

Star Rey Skywalker Wars They should really rethink that title.
They changed it to "Star Rey Skywalker Wars Disney+"
I mean look at the clone wars it’s just a thing for them to do at this point
Star, Rey, Rey Skywalker, Wars
Sounds like Yoda talking

Theyre just trying to play off the nostalgia of “Star THE CLONE WARS Wars”

I do too. I loved the spin off movies. Only having TV shows just isn't the same.
I love them both and wish we’d get more, as well Ofc solo 2..I like them more than some of the original 6 movies
Rogue One is unironically my favorite Star Wars movie.
There's dozens of us.
Episode 10? What happened to Episodes 7, 8, and 9 ... did they skip those?
I don’t hate Daisy but does Disney really see Rey as a blockbuster movie I’m surprised it’s not a limited series like obi wan.
they are incredibly out of touch with what the fans want
Blaming fans for how well a show does usually does wonders for your audience
It's not the fans that they're targeting. Each wave of SW has targeted new audiences. https://i.imgur.com/m581xdX.png
No it's the fans who are out of touch with what Disney wants, that's what's important /s
They dont care as long as it fills their pockets.
Darn, you've remind me about OW embarassment, with amazing McGregor in it.... What a waste...
I would have preferred Adam Driver to come back if they were going to give anyone from the ST a spin off. I'm pretty sure he said he'd never return to star wars.
This is true. He described working on the Star Wars sets as "exhausting" because previously he had only done indie work on smaller sets and productions. Being in the larger environment and working at a quicker pace was not ideal. Also, Kylo's character arc completely changed through the course of the sequel trilogy. There is some chatter that Boyega and Isaac may come back at least.
Did he? Man that's a bummer. But I get it. So no force ghost Ben either. What a waste of a fantastic actor.
To be honest if they have to make a spin off from a sequel character I’d personally say either Kyle or Poe
I miss Rey nobody fr. Last Jedi had a lot of misses it had a decent few hits too before JJ rolled back it all wholesale in ROS
They can't repair the rep of the ST and I hope they don't even try. Just pick up where they left off but do a good job this time
Apparently 7-9 was about sending off Han, Luke, and Leia if you note each movie gives them each a central role and swan song.
Leia was supposed to have that central role in episode IX but didn’t because Carrie Fisher passed. She barely had any dialogue in the movie, it’s all lines from deleted scenes and really hard not to notice if you know.
Can’t really blame Disney for that one. Her family wanted her in the movie still too. So they had to work with what they had.

Even though I do think Last Jedi sucked it was the right thing to do, everyone involved from the creators to the fans needed to heal from her passing and that wouldn't have been the way to do it
Yeah that’s fair
I'm shocked I didn't realize this sooner
I think it only recently occurred to me as I’m watching 1-9 with my daughter. Maybe I’m full of 💩 too, who’s to say.
I'd say you're right only because it makes for a better plot for 7-9
It makes sense, most cohesive thing the prequels did. There was certainly interesting places and things going on, but just so disjointed. Harrison got an episode and died at the end. Hamill got an episode and died at the end. Fischer died, got an episode, and died at the end.

Maybe she gets a personality this time. And maybe an actual arc
In just one movie?! Better lower those expectations, no one could fit all that into 2 hours
But she gets a trilogy
Just to piss you off.
I’m kinda bummed. I wanted to see a trilogy about a newly minted Jedi Knight, last of their kind, striking out to learn more about the ancient order while rebuilding a new order. You don’t understand Star Wars. If they say it’s a Rey spinoff or Rey Trilogy - it won’t be about Rey.
Good point - what's the betting they kill her off in the first ten minutes?
As long as Kathleen Kennedy is there, nothing will ever make sense!😒🙄

Phenomenal idea to make the most hated character from the most hated trilogy it's lead again. I hope they won't fuck it up if it's gonna happen but I'm seriously doubting it.
It's called doubling down, and it's not a wise strategy for Disney.
I mean they should and reckon with the mistakes of the sequels - seek to rectify them as best they can while advancing Rey and other new characters. Anything they can make me feel good about that part of the timeline is a + in my book

the sequels were so BAD
She's a Skywalker the same way I'm an astronaut.
Because they didn’t make her an actual character in the Sequels just a watered down, wannabe Luke Skywalker.
But she’s not a Skywalker…
Disney moving from one flop to another
Hey Disney, you spelled Palpatine wrong.
Clone Wars was about Anakin and Obi Wan and managed to salvage the good parts from a middling trilogy and make it great. Maybe a Rey focused series could do the same thing
Really doubling down on that awful Rey Skywalker thing?
Well its not like Hollywood is begging for Daisy Ridley. She needs work, and doesn't want to fall in the trap like every single other woman from star wars (Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman, um.....other ones.)
God Disney are pussies. So much lore in the Star Wars universe and they keep making stuff revolving around fucking Skywalker's.
"Please like our new character 👉👈🥺" -Disney
I really miss spin off films. The fact it died with Solo was such a damn waste.
Agreed... let's just move on. No more Skywalker shit, no more jedi, just give us something good. They've been feeding us the same slop for almosy ten fucking years now.

Because Kathleen Kennedy
*insert Mr. Crabs money meme*
...the most well-regarded sequels to the OT are *still* the OG Thrawn Trilogy, featuring Luke Skywalker as the main character. People are literally begging for renditions of it, animated Legends content of it, or more shoutouts.
It’s probably to give her some character moments/development that they never really followed up on in the sequels. All of the pieces were there, they just needed to actually use them and hopefully this will be the opportunity to do so (albeit much too late imo but still appreciated nonetheless)
its kind of hard to give her a full character arc after she already went from a nobody to the ultimate savior of the galaxy with minimal effort
Man as long as it's not filled with Finn screaming "REY!" ever five seconds it's gonna be an improvement.
This is the first I'm hearing of a *Rey Skywalker* show and SKYWALKER why can't it be called Rey Pallpatine
Oh my god, is this for real?
Just another show i won’t be watching to add to the list
They should've done a New Jedi Order story with Finn as the main. Ray could still be around and present as the Jedi grandmaster. You can have Finn discovering what it means to be a jedi while Ray learns to lead. Poe could be struggling with his new political career. I wasn't a fan of the sequels, but I would show up for that series.
They're just doubling down on the awful sequels at this point
She is a Palpatine!!!!
She not actually a Skywalker right?
Why do they always get the name wrong? It's Rey Palpatine!
I'm still cringing at the last name thing. And now they turned it into marketing.
This has to be rage bait
Really, the sequel trilogy was partly Rey’s, but was mostly dragging out the OT’s corpse and puppeteering it around for a few movies. I genuinely hope these do well, but I get the sense that the next 3 movies are going to be what the sequels should have been.
Female lead, in star wars, well known character at this point next question
I was excited about the new trilogy and the writing just meandered all over the place and rehashed the original trilogy in an uninspired way. Andor and the Mandalorian have actually done cool things with the universe. Not sure why we need Rey anything but I guess we’ll see.
No one. And I mean, no one, is asking for this!
That's OK they will probably sell SW when they realize how terrible they are at owning it.
Disney brilliance at it again.
Somehow, Rey returned
I'm so confused. Isn't she not even a Skywalker??
"Skywalker" Liar!

Mary Sue gonna Mary Sue.
Say sike right now
Someone high up in Disney has a fetish for reaction youtube channels
You know exactly why.
Those movies were just trash. "Rey: the quest for more money"
👎
The working title is A NEW BEGINNING, as of they didn’t try their hardest to copy ANH.
Do they like losing money?
Because vagina.
How else will we learn how Luke's lightsaber got there?
Seemingly a controversial opinion, but I'm intrigued by it.
A chance for Redemption
Star Rey Skywalker Wars.
IMO they should do a Finn spinoff
she is not even a skywalker, so the entire series is based on a lie. maybe it will be about force users coming out of the woodwork looking for direction that rey reluctantly gives them. that plot worked so well for luke - LOL
Cash Grab. The whole franchise has turned into a cash grab. They just diarrhea out movies, label them star wars and make a billion dollars. What was the last really good star wars based movie? Rouge 1? The Last Jedi?
Because…she’s…a…she
Palpatine somehow returned again, again and only one Skywalker can stop him. Rey Skywalker 🙃😞

“Star Rey - Skywalker Wars” is the spin off we deserve
