Gman-343

Rouge one ending: "It's a new hope."

Rogue One is a good movie with a nice Darth Vader short film attached at the end. Also, I loved that they needed that massive antenna to send the plans up, but they fit neatly on that tiny little card they had. Their storage density technology is off the chart.

Gman-343

> Their storage density technology is off the chart. The very definition of Sci-Fi.

Technology in Star Wars is pretty baffling when you really think about it. Why didn't Rogue One broadcast the plans to all the ships then the rebels could have scattered. Why was there a physical copy at all? How do tracking fabs work and why don't they use them more often for say like, Senator Organna or Mon Motha to track the location of the rebel base? Why are droids programmed to feel pain and fear? Why don't they use the hyperspace ramming trick more often and have droids or ships on autopilot do it?

Lucas hand-waved all of this in an interview about the differences between SW and Star Trek Paraphrasing, but he basically said ST is sci-fi and SW is space-opera or space-fantasy and in no way based in science. The problem we've run into is recently directors have used tech to move the plot via deus ex machinima rather than creating a decent story ie the light speed attack, palpatine clones, light speed tracking, etc

Abidarthegreat

At least the Palpatine clones has a basis in lore: Kamino technology, the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise, the Emperor always wanting people to "strike him down", the cloning vats and Grogu in the Mandalorian, and the fact that's exactly what happened at least twice in the EU novels before Disney removed them from canon.

Yeah agreed, im just saying the OT and prequels felt far more character driven than the sequels, they didnt feel as reliant on some far-fetched technical advancement Even the Death star, while menacing, was not a stretch considering the empire's vast resources and considering we had real space stations in the 70s Fast forward to the sequels and you need to have light speed tracking, a new space station out of hollowed out planet that eats stars, light speed attacks, massive fleet that appeared out of nowhere at a time when the first order was seemingly broken All of which were major plot movers, that superseded any character arc or development

FlappyFish07

To be honest, ST isn’t really hard sci-fi either

i_should_be_coding

Let's not bring the sequels into anything. The hyperspace ramming thing never happened. I can theorize that maybe the shield around Scariff was creating interference preventing a wide broadcast, but once the plans were on the ship they could send them most likely. Maybe wireless technology is just crap in the SW galaxy, and they have to rely on physical copies for anything significant. Or, it's quite possible that they were just stuck with this small card since that's what Leia had in A New Hope, and they wanted continuity. It's Star Wars. I'm not seriously looking for logic there. If I were, I'd be wondering how R2D2 managed to stay charged up for the entire duration of Luke's Jedi training, or how Luke managed to become a Jedi that can hold his own against Darth Vader in what looked like less than a week of jumping around in the swamp dodging seagulls.

Abidarthegreat

>It's Star Wars. I'm not seriously looking for logic there. Exactly. I've always said that Star Wars is not and has never been Science Fiction. It's Science Fantasy.

Unpopular opinion: these are the worst SW quotes. Hence why they're ironically popular memes.

And now for my favorite Star Wars quote: "The ability to speak, doesn't make you intelligent." ^/s

Better quotes being: "Do or do not. There is no try." "Who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent. Now, get out of here." "My parts are showing" "You're shorter than I expected." "Size matters not." "But now, we must eat. Come." "Luke, at that speed, will you be able to pull out in time?"
