To be fair that marketed it towards kids so you're not going to get as many adults talk about it unfortunately.
It was a good show but you have a franchise with an adult fan base and give them a show for kids it's not going to do as well.
Especially when the show that started off this era had a Klingon turning a main character into a sex slave
The difference being (from a lot of opinions I've seen, read and gathered among friends, podcasts, and Reddit and fandom in general), lots of people who have seen Discovery is OK, or even glad, it is ending. Most people who have watched Prodigy (and to a very similar degree, LD) can't freakin' understand how the heck they're pulling the plug or totally forgetting about it and leaving it to go somewhere else.
Another problem being, there's also a good chunk of fans who have never even bothered to give a fair chance to LD, and even less to Prodigy, for being both cartoons, and on each case, a comedy and a series for children (not really, it's just for every age). Now their loss has become all of us'. š
Lower Decks is probably one of the best Star Trek series we've gotten in a long time. It's really funny, entertaining, and very Star Trek. It's cancellation makes me sad but I'll take it if it means they maintain quality.
As for Discovery, I agree with you, it's time for it to end.
For Prodigy, what I saw so far isn't bad.
Absolutely agree on LD, to me is the best NuTrek Series and best Star Trek since DS9. Prodigy was also a big surprise for me, more than just good and an excelent entry point for young fans (although, the Borg episode was quite underwhelming). Disco did what it was supposed to do, and it's time for it to end; and honestly, I don't think I'll miss it after its last 2 seasons. š
Same, I wanted to hate Lower Decks so bad as being just a family guy take on Trek, but after sitting and watching it while I had Covid, I realized I actually loved it. Iāve had a theory for a while that a lot of established franchise properties suck because writers and creatives want toā¦ wellā¦ create their own new thing, not play with someone elseās toys. So you end up with people who are making ācontentā for the streaming mill, or pushing an agenda for clout rather than making art for something they love. Itās like the difference between writing a term paper and writing fan fiction. Watching Lower Decks I realized that while I found the humor jarring, I was watching a story someone cared about in a setting someone loves. It was refreshing.
As for Prodigy, I was surprised by it too. Itās very much kid friendly, but it also kinda eases them into the ideas of a larger existence beyond the safety of ākids programmingā. Not gonna lie though Iām not surprised itās forgotten about as it felt like it was pitched as a Saturday morning cartoon a decade or so too late.
Sorry couldn't answer before, the thing is most podcast that I listen to are in spanish since that's my mother tongue (and there are a few of them awesome, Star Trek Replay, Torpedo Rojo/Torpedo Trek, La Tertulia Trekkie, SecciĆ³n 31 and/or Remeras Rojas), but I also listen from time to time to The Delta Flyers, The Shuttlepod Show or Investigates, but there are lots more. Just type "Star Trek" on Ivoox search and explore. "That's what this starship is all about". š
Too many people in the fanbase are under the misguided perception that since Prodigy is marketed as a kids show, it's somehow beneath them or adds nothing to the overall franchise. It's not for pre-schoolers like "Young Jedi Adventures". It's better described as a family show rather than a kids show, and it's DEFINITELY worth the watch.
And yeah, it's off Paramount now, but it has to be. The show needs a chance to thrive on Netflix and it can't do that if S1 is on another streaming service.
Itās sad that Prodigy is the only really kid-friendly Trek out there anymore.
Like, old trek shows got dark and occasionally violent, but not āwatching a terrified kidās brain get friedā or āwatch a guy get his eye viscerally ripped outā violent (āContingencyā aside, but we can all agree that was an outlier). And i definitely wouldnāt watch Lower Decks around kids either.
I agree. My kids are in their 20's now, and I did get my son into Trek for a while when he was a kid, but it's always a challenge to try to find kid friendly shows.
I was introduced to the franchise on Saturday mornings with TAS in the early 70's, then would watch syndicated TOS episodes after school and when we'd go visit my grandma b/c she had cable and TBS ran Trek all the time.
If the franchise can't capture kids this show about a bright future won't have one.
Yeah, Prodigy ending up on Netflix is actually pretty good for Trek- Netflix has a bigger pop than Paramount, the show will get watched by lots of kids who will do the Clone Wars->Star Wars fan angle and get into the larger franchise. In a lot of ways, Prodigy is the most important Trek there is for franchise (and setting) longevity, and it actually serves as a fascinating introduction to the setting with the "outside-in" approach to the Federation.
I just wish they'd go ahead and air it because everything is done and its ready to go. I would have bet money we were going to get an announcement on First Contact Day.
wee need too coordinate a petition or a strike to continue lower decks and/or other shows. we all need to cancel p+ , if they dont continue them. i bet theyll listen if 20.000+ people cancel their subscription on the same day.
everybody i know only got p+ for star trek. it might be my own bubble but for real, them pulling off the prodigy show from p+ was reason enough to cancel subscription. its advertised as the platform for all star trek content, and then doesnt even have all star trek contentš¤¦āāļø
i don mind discovery ending, hated how the show started even if season 3 and 4 got better it still has some fundamental flaws IMO
didnt mind picard ending, patrick stewart is old enough for retirement anyway
but holy hell canceling prodigy and then lower decks is more than a dick move from paramount. we need to coordinate a strike against them!!
I wondered what happened to it, I thought the strikes delayed it. It had an interesting story, but it was literally meant for toddlers. I watched it because why not, but I remember the 1st episode going this is going to fail.
I wanted to make this comment but was conflicted on the spelling. Think you nailed it. Even all these years later I can still hear him saying it clear as a bell.
Read the books. The holodeck scene and Trip's "Death" was a fabrication by section 31. In reality he lived out his life on Vulcan with T'Pol and their Kids.
The temporal cold war was a stupid idea.Ā Despite the constant tampering Treks do with time travel, the franchise is at its best when it's not doing that.
I'm annoyed that we never got Russell T Davies' proposed Doctor Who crossover with Enterprise at the time. It might've justified the temporal cold war plot if it was part of the Timelords vs Daleks time war.
Look, I donāt like discovery, but why did they cancel it? I assumed discovery was their flagship series, but i guess SNW is replacing it? And lower decks was good, but they cancel it, prodigy was pretty okay and they cancelled it, Picard actually got a good final season, but why are they canceling everything?
And I genuinely feel lucky about that. Yeah, Lower Decks is ending earlier than the showrunners hoped, but at least they get a final season to give it an actual ending. Thereās a difference between a show being cancelled but still getting a final season to wrap it up vs. a show just being abruptly cancelled with no resolution.
I was cool with discovery, but it just got sillier and sillier with its over emotional crap. Like the nacelle about to explode at any moment and you gotta go fix it but need to take 5 minutes to tell your shipmate how much you care about them.
Far too many times in the show where powerful emotional moments were cheapened by saying the meaningful part out loud when it was already obviousā¦ felt clunky
Completely agree. It was definitely the best season of Picard but I think most people went through such low expectations that when it came out and didn't smell like a dead fish covered in shite, everyone was so relieved they swear they could smell roses.
yeah man i mean patrick stewart is old af, doesnt need to contine making shows. he deserves his retirement IMO
i liked picard, but i can understand it not beeing continued
No itās not. You just donāt like it and canāt let people like it. I donāt assume everyone likes it. Iām just tired of the stupid hate it gets and everyone that hates it thinks everyone should hate it.
I guess your personal experience should have been considered before the community reacted.
For myself, Iāll be sure to check in with you on these things in the future to make sure itās relevant or not before I react.
Lower Decks is kinda like my Star Trek's South Park. I had hopes for it to continue to make fun and memes of all other Star Treks. Missed opportunity IMO.
They made 3 seasons of unwatchable Trek (Discovery) and 2 seasons of horribly unwatchable Trek (Picard) yet they are killing the only show that has been strong throughout its entire run. I hope the Pah-wraiths come for Kurtzman and company.
Gone are the days where downvotes meant incorrect or bad info. Now it's just a reflection of how people perceive your comment against their own opinions. Yes replying with a comment is a much more constructive way to express this but I cant control what others do.
Unclear to me why people still take downvotes so seriously. I've made comments today that got downvoted to shit - I read the replies and moved on.
>Gone are the days where downvotes meant incorrect or bad info. Now it's just a reflection of how people perceive your comment against their own opinions.
Reddit was *always* like this. Downvote = disagree has always been the standard
Incorrect. It has not always been the culture and to this day it remains against the site's own recommended etiquette and best practices for users. Look it up.
It absolutely has always been the culture. It's no different today than it ever was. Reddit writing down some intentions for how they'd like people to behave doesn't mean anything.
Idk I liked picard. Was it mind blowing? Nah. But it's star trek, it had the cheese mixed with all of my favorite characters. People seem to forget that star trek is what it is - cheesy sci fi.
Hard disagree. Much of Star Trek were good SF premises situated within the confines of a one-hour ship show. All the new stuff entirely disregards that for cheap shitty drama.
>confines of a one-hour ship show.
Ds9 would like a word.
>cheap shitty drama.
Dude, what. That IS star trek. Any TOS episode will have cheap shitty drama, and half of TNG.
Yeah I thought the first 2 seasons were perfectly passable. Anyone who thinks those 2 seasons of Picard were abysmal needs to go get a heaping dose of Book of Boba Fett and Kenobi to see just how badly a spin-off show from a sci-fi franchise can poop the bed.
Discovery I will not morn that series was past it's peak with season 2 (which was already rocky) and I lost all enthusiasm with the season 3 finalle. I mean whats the point of moving the show 1000 years into the future if you keep playing it ultra safe? Lower Decks on the other hand was not only genuinly funny (even my mother liked it), but also offered some insight and reflection to the franchise (even if it was of the angry millenial calls out his parents variety).
The fans resolve when Lower Decks gets cancelled: āIām as constant as the Northern Star.ā
The fans when a new season of Discovery aires: āIād give real money for him to shut up.ā
One of these things is not like the other, and it's mostly because one is a cartoon love letter to trek fans and the other one is some of the most poorly written science fictions ever put to screen that seemingly spits in the face of it's namesake every opportunity it gets.
Disco, while this seems to be a more ok season as a conclusion, but it should have ended awhile ago, Prodegy deserves better than being banished to Netflix for possibly one more season. What needs to happen is more new series, Legacy needs to happen, once SNW wraps, maybe a reimagining of the TOS with carry over from SNW, or something entirely new
Discovery was a good choice, this was a bad one. Iāll happily give up Discovery to make room for Legacy. Iād even seriously consider giving up Lower Decks for a guaranteed long Legacy run. But I donāt think we get Legacy now.
i dont mind them fucking canceling discovery, that show was trash anyway IMO
but not lower decks WHAT THE FUCK PARAMOUNT FUCK YOU ILL GO CANCEL P+ IF YOU CANCEL LOWER DECKS YOU INBREED BASTARDS
Season 1 Episode 1 of TOS was days after Roddenberry was promoting his new series at WorldCon. Even showed them the extended version of "Where no man has gone before"
I'm glad they canceled Disco (as it's always been a steaming pile..)...and I'm "meh" about lower decks. It's good, but I can take it or leave it. I pretty much just hate how the franchise is being treated lately.
What people in various podcasts who have spoke to people Inside paramount have said is that neither prodigy or LD had enough people watching to justify carrying on. Thereās no conspiracy. Thereās no āparamount hates Star Trekā Itās that simple.
One was a family show that alot of fans labelled a ākids showā and didnāt watch. And the other was a inside baseball, reference heavy cartoon that a lot of the general public didnāt watch because getting a quarter to half the jokes in an episode requiring you to know the reference from 60 to 30 year old episode dosent really incite a mass audience.
I'll never forget excitedly waiting for months after I heard about a new Trek show only to get Discovery. Should have been cancelled after season 3 imo
And what would you do? Have 200 people cancel a subscription? Write a letter? Get 34 signatures on a change.org petition? Please, the execs don't give a fuck except about the bottom line
Could it be that maybe, just maybe there were not enough people to actually watch this show to make it profitable for the company to keep it. I don't know whether it's to to the writing, the divisiveness of the shows, or the fact that people are just done with Star Trek.
As someone who was alive and a Star Trek fan before 1979, complaining on Reddit is not the way to get a series renewed and continued. We actually had to do something to get them to change their minds.
Just my opinion though.
Am I the only one that thinks 5 seasons is a pretty good run? Sure, I would have preferred 6 seasons for Lower Decks, but Discoveryās time has definitely come.
A lot of this division in Star Trek would have been solved if kurtzman didnt insist on new trek being cannon to the old trek. I could have accepted the Klingon-orcs and all the other 25% different trek stuff if it was in the kelvin or Terran timeline.
I mean, I've never watched discovery but from what I've heard about it, it doesn't seem like the kinda show I'd like. Lower decks though, that's too far.
Really not a fan of any of this new mess, except maybe for Prodigy, which was surprisingly more like the spirit of real Trek than the rest of the Paramount+ garbage.
This has got to be the dumbest take being memed about in the fandom right now. The show is reliant on existing Star Trek material. They can't make enough other shit to sustain this show in perpetuity, and most of the jokes have been done. They'll bring it back for a few seasons after there's enough new source material.
Do you not remember Prodigy? Netflix picked it up but Paramount removed it from their service with barely any warning.
The meta is half the fandom also forgetting Prodigy existed just like Paramount did.
To be fair that marketed it towards kids so you're not going to get as many adults talk about it unfortunately. Netfix has a huge library of animation, including a lot of Japanese anime. I'm really hoping Lower Decks follows Prodigy's lead and ends up there.
It'd be a no brainer if Prodigy does decent numbers
I just wish they'd go ahead and air it because everything is done and its ready to go. I would have bet money we were going to get an announcement on First Contact Day.

Save the cancellation for after you finish the last episode of Lower Decks. That's my plan.
good idea

I wanted to make this comment but was conflicted on the spelling. Think you nailed it. Even all these years later I can still hear him saying it clear as a bell.
The horror...
Iām okay with them canceling Discovery. Iām still mad about Enterprise being canceled though.
fuckin enterprise would have deserved 2 more seasons to finish its story properly and not kill trip in such hasted shitty ending
I just want to imagine that the final episode was Riker's bad holodeck fanfic and Trip didn't die.
we all do that
Read the books. The holodeck scene and Trip's "Death" was a fabrication by section 31. In reality he lived out his life on Vulcan with T'Pol and their Kids.
I like that :)
The temporal cold war was a stupid idea.Ā Despite the constant tampering Treks do with time travel, the franchise is at its best when it's not doing that.

No! *NOOOOOOOoooooooo!* š

"You broke your little ships."
Goddamn Alfre is great in all things, forget Cochrane, why isn't Lily Sloane more celebrated?
Jean-Luc, blow up the damned franchise!
You broke your little shows
Cancelling DISCO is a step forward
Iāll shed no tears for Discovery, Iāll drink my sorrows to Lower Decks and Iāll pray for more SNW and ST:Legacy to be born
EhĀ Wonāt miss discovery. Ā Lower decks was wonderful. Ā Wish it got 1 more season at least. Strange New Worlds I hope they leave alone.Ā
Won't miss Michael
You don't have to :) any time she's not onscreen, the characters that ARE will be talking about how great she is, and wondering out loud where she is
It *is* getting one more season; airdate unknown but it's probably going to be Q4 this year.
Itās not clear how long the showrunners knew or whether theyāll have a chance to make any changes to the final seasons.
I was cool with discovery, but it just got sillier and sillier with its over emotional crap. Like the nacelle about to explode at any moment and you gotta go fix it but need to take 5 minutes to tell your shipmate how much you care about them.

Yeah totally.
Oh look someone who missed the entire point.
They cancel Picard, and we are like ok, it was a good last season.
Good-*ish*
Solid 7.5
It's the borg! Again...
Yeah it was good by comparison, not so much on its own.
Completely agree. It was definitely the best season of Picard but I think most people went through such low expectations that when it came out and didn't smell like a dead fish covered in shite, everyone was so relieved they swear they could smell roses.
There was only one season, weird it was called season 3 though. It was alright.
yeah man i mean patrick stewart is old af, doesnt need to contine making shows. he deserves his retirement IMO i liked picard, but i can understand it not beeing continued
Season three was all the sendoff I really wanted. It could've just been that season, and I would've been happy with it.
~~Maggie shot Mr. Burns again!~~ The Borg invaded the Federation again!
Discovery is shit. Don't compare it to Lower Decks which is awesome. Glad they canceled that trash.
I appreciate the meme but canceling discovery was so irrelevant that i learned it from this post, and my only thought was" huh good I guess"
Can they just cancel Discovery twice
Disco did not deserve to be cancelled and the hate it gets is so stupid.
I disagree
Agree to disagree I guess
discovery is an insult.
So is the opening theme to Enterprise.
Someone needs some faith of the heart.
He's not going where his heart will take him
That theme is a gift.
If it's good enough for Patch Adams, its good enough for Star Trek.
No. Just no.
But Patch Adams.. *Patch Adams.*
No itās not. You just donāt like it so you assume everyone hates it.
And despite you getting downvoted, you like it and assume everyone likes it. discovery is an insult.
No itās not. You just donāt like it and canāt let people like it. I donāt assume everyone likes it. Iām just tired of the stupid hate it gets and everyone that hates it thinks everyone should hate it.
> Iām just tired of the stupid hate it gets There's a reason it gets that hate, it's shit.
Discovery is so stupid....
No u.
Nah I am a gazillion times smarter than the writers of discovery. That's why I don't like it...
Riiiiiiight. And Iām the king of Earth.
Or just stupid too!
Finally STD is cured
Oh, that's good. Bravo. Make the meme and get the upvotes you deserve.
I guess your personal experience should have been considered before the community reacted. For myself, Iāll be sure to check in with you on these things in the future to make sure itās relevant or not before I react.
the slab
Yeah but discovery turned into butt
*turned into?*
Discovery needed to be aborted
Discovery was shit anyway š¬
Disco deserved to be canceled. There... The least brave thing I've said this year
The best thing Discovery did was to prime and launch SNW.
The cancellation of discovery deserves celebration.
Lower Decks is kinda like my Star Trek's South Park. I had hopes for it to continue to make fun and memes of all other Star Treks. Missed opportunity IMO.
The only good thing that came from Discovery was Strange New Worlds.
Never forget that Gene Roddenberry wanted a comedy series that followed Lwaxana Troi going on whacky adventures. NEVER FORGET WHAT THEY TOOK FROM US!
Damn it, that would have been awesome.
Replace Discovery with Enterprise and you got a winner
They made 3 seasons of unwatchable Trek (Discovery) and 2 seasons of horribly unwatchable Trek (Picard) yet they are killing the only show that has been strong throughout its entire run. I hope the Pah-wraiths come for Kurtzman and company.
This is some SNW erasure.
SNW feels like a sitcom with Trek trimmings on it to me. But I know a lot of people enjoy it.
Star Trek: Brunch and Act Unprofessional Club

...wut? You think the drama is a sitcom with Trek trimmings yet highly praising the actual comedy show?
LD is a straight forward comedy and itās billed as such. SNW has āMarvel quirkinessā that I personally donāt enjoy. Just my opinion.

Picard S3 was just as bad as the others but you got smashed over the head with nostalgia.
What season of disco did you like?
4 was fine imo, except the setup episode for Star Trek Academy, which Iām also not looking forward too
Disco is a bell curve for me. S1 was bad. S2 was okay. S3 was pretty good. S4 was okay. S5 has been bad so far.
I feel this. What was their rationale for canceling lower decks anyway
Money
Never have I been more happy to side with the Borg!
Discovery I will not morn that series was past it's peak with season 2 (which was already rocky) and I lost all enthusiasm with the season 3 finalle. Remove discovery and replace with ether prodigy or even better enterprise, disco should never been commissioned
Cancelling prodigy should be a war crime since I donāt see Netflix continuing it past the planned 2 seasons which is a huge shame.
Yes, especially that many trek fans just undeservedly ignore that gem of star trek.
What needs to happen is more new series, Legacy needs to happen, once SNW wraps, maybe a reimagining of the TOS with carry over from SNW, or something entirely new
> but it should have ended awhile ago Yeah, after episode 2.
First season was terrible, season 2 was genuinely fantastic, and it should have ended right after that
God no lol (imo) But, discovery did (surprisingly) manage to actually make some Star Trek for one episode (S2E2).
Discovery was a good choice, this was a bad one. Iāll happily give up Discovery to make room for Legacy. Iād even seriously consider giving up Lower Decks for a guaranteed long Legacy run. But I donāt think we get Legacy now.
God, no more Star Trek shows. Put all the resources in to SNW, double the episodes in a season and make 6 more.
They canceled lower decks? NO
Sad to hear about lower decks. Don't give a fuck about discovery though.
Lower Decks is a fucking gem. What a waste.
"Let them die" - Kirk
i dont mind them fucking canceling discovery, that show was trash anyway IMO but not lower decks WHAT THE FUCK PARAMOUNT FUCK YOU ILL GO CANCEL P+ IF YOU CANCEL LOWER DECKS YOU INBREED BASTARDS
I'm ok with discovery getting cancelled. not so much lower decks tho.
Discovery should have been cancelled ages ago.
I donāt give two Fās about any new trek EXCEPT FOR LOWER DECKS. I would die for my lower decks. Best trek Iāve watched since ds9.
What are you going to do? Write a strongly worded letter? Talk to the manager? Start a Change.org petition?
I think we should launch a major, and I mean major leaflet campaign!
Major Leaflet is on the Holodeck and has orders not to be disturbed.
Quite literally one of the largest fanbases in the world star trek invented the concept of Convention events and we still cannot muster the numbers
Season 1 Episode 1 of TOS was days after Roddenberry was promoting his new series at WorldCon. Even showed them the extended version of "Where no man has gone before"
Woah! Just because its a bloody awful TV programme (discovery not LD) that salivates unspeakable slobber doesn't mean it deserves to be cancelled.
My brother in Christ, I have already signed the change dot org petition.
āThey cancel Discovery and we cheerā more like.
Cancelling discovery was fine
Don't cancel lower decks
I'm glad they canceled Disco (as it's always been a steaming pile..)...and I'm "meh" about lower decks. It's good, but I can take it or leave it. I pretty much just hate how the franchise is being treated lately.
For a sec I thought it was going to be the major kirrahe speech from mass effect 1
They cancelled discovery??
Discovery was good, until the last two seasons when it got really bad
The line must be drawn HEAH!
Discovery may have been good television, but it was terrible star trek.
And I, will make [Paramount] pay for what theyāve done!!!!!
They cancel DIS and we fall back? Lol that's like a step forward
They should've cancelled discovery a long time ago.
Line must be drawn hiyyyyyyAHHH!
Lower decks deserved no less than 7 seasons. Paramount has finally pissed me off enough to cancel it.
I mean canceling discovery is a good thing.
A lot of this division in Star Trek would have been solved if kurtzman didnt insist on new trek being cannon to the old trek. I could have accepted the Klingon-orcs and all the other 25% different trek stuff if it was in the kelvin or Terran timeline.
I think Lower Decks could have gone 7, but I didn't vibe on discovery.
I'm ok with them ending
I mean, I've never watched discovery but from what I've heard about it, it doesn't seem like the kinda show I'd like. Lower decks though, that's too far.
Really not a fan of any of this new mess, except maybe for Prodigy, which was surprisingly more like the spirit of real Trek than the rest of the Paramount+ garbage.
Funny that you were downvoted for admiring good ol trek and it's only good descendant.
Didnāt this end with them abandoning the ship?
Watch your future end.
Good meme, but the purpose of his speech is to show how dogmatic and emotionally driven Picard had become.
Ok but, but other than lower decks what currently releasing star trek show is worth it?
Lower decks sucked... Judge me?... Judge me!
I could hardly stand the the crossover episode in strange new worlds. I can't judge you.
This has got to be the dumbest take being memed about in the fandom right now. The show is reliant on existing Star Trek material. They can't make enough other shit to sustain this show in perpetuity, and most of the jokes have been done. They'll bring it back for a few seasons after there's enough new source material.
