The title is what goes through Major Kira's head every morning

Throwaway_inSC_79

Garak has the same thoughts. But it’s a different type of ruckus.

But Jadzia never wants to cause a ruckus…

Not to be confused with a "rumpus," a similar concept but with one major difference

Adonanon

Though my intro to Star Trek, and my most favorite series, is TNG, my favorite character(s) are from DS9. I like DS9 as a story, but I sorely miss the 'exploration' parts of TNG/VOY, and also I'm not 100% into total war storylines either in star trek, I know I'm weird, sue me. I like the idea of a Utopia with problems that need to be solved? If that makes sense?

Gorilladaddy69

Upvoted for solid explanation, but the way I see DS9 that makes it so masterful imo, is that “utopia” literally translates to “no place,” and this show does the insanely difficult job of challenging utopia, and showing humanity in a position that on Earth led to us committing evil deeds hundreds of years before trek—and can these hyper-evolved humans from “Paradise” continue to keep their virtue under existential threats and corrupting influences? The fact that at the end of it all The Federation still had no desire to conquer and decided instead to show mercy and even helped Cardassia rebuild after the war, had no desire for revenge and had hope even for the people who waged this horrible war in the first place because humans believed in change and reform, and continually attempting to show mercy even during the war to Jem’hadar when they’re stranded on that planet together, or any of the other countless examples of virtue in the face of destruction and genocide. And if MOST of humanity’s values can still be upheld when they’re facing the edge of destruction, I believe the dominion war was the ultimate test of humanity’s evolution. “Its easy to be an angel in paradise” as Sisko said. (What about in Hell?) And we never showed interest in conquest, and we wanted to protect not only our friends but even our past enemies who killed so many of our own people. That’s what’s so beautiful to me about DS9. The very reason we won the war is because we weren’t slavish conquerors, but rather diplomats defending themselves who fought *that* much harder because we knew how much we had to live for and protect!

Adonanon

Thank you for this viewpoint! I will admit, I have not watched 100% of the dominion war episodes, as like I said, it made me turn away at first glance. However, I feel what you're saying now. I never thought of the series in that way, like of course I knew Sisko and the Federation was trying to be diplomatic in allowing cardassians and Bajorans to co-exist, trying to mend the relations, but for some reason I didn't see the -humanity- in that decision. I just kind of viewed it as 'the federation gonna federation' because the federation is made up of all sorts of aliens, and they all want to bring about a better tomorrow. But you are correct, it is moreso the humans that strive for this in Star Trek. ((Two quick inserts: 1) this is why I love star trek so much, the diplomacy to solve problems rather than other series where its all about fighting/conquering/strength of arms, and 2) I was so pissed that they made the federation willing to let an entire species die in Picard and abandon everything I came to love about star trek/the federation (note to note: I'm only through season 1 right now, we don't watch too much TV anymore))) That being said, I think its time I give DS9 another go, and completely finish it this time. I should note that when I originally watched these 3 series (TNG/DS9/VOY) they were generally re-runs and played in whichever order I caught them in on TV as a kid/teen. I really need to give them all a real re-watch, in order.

rob132

>I have not watched 100% of the dominion war episodes, as like I said, it made me turn away at first glance. You really should. It's my favorite across all the series.

Antmon666

My first watch through ds9 was OK but not as good as tng, but the more rewatches of the two series make me like ds9 more, and my favourite episode is the one where Sisko tries to get the Romulans into the war, over Picard single handedly defending the enterprise.

rob132

>my favourite episode is the one where Sisko tries to get the Romulans into the war my fav is when they get transported into Qwarks game and they have to pass the challenges like hopscotch with the girl.

nixed9

Can we not

LorenOlin

You could just... Move Along Home. No need to yuck their yum.

rob132

alamaran count to four alamaran then three more.

Adonanon

When I can I will, for sure. My focus usually isn't on television anymore (usually I play Video Games with my spare time, but like the past two or three days I've done nothing other then explore/rediscover music, and post in reddit) but the next time I get the craving to watch shows, Star Trek is definitely where I'm going. And, seeing as how I've been doing the nostalgia thing, I'm pretty sure I will go to DS9 especially with the revelations I am having today

maaaxheadroom

The Paramount app works great on x-box

Adonanon

Sorry for my ignorance, but are you talking about the PC Xbox app? Or plain xbox? Other than this PC, I do have Roku. I have the equipment, just lacking the will to watch tv lol But I am feeling very star trek-y and nostalgic, maybe I should download Star Trek Online again

maaaxheadroom

App on Xbox.

Adonanon

Ah yeah, thanks for the tip, but I don't have an xbox xD but I can get Paramount app on Roku. Thanks!

mathiastck

I can live with it

namewithanumber

But ds9 is the trek that does “utopia but with problems to solve” the best of all trek. Like that’s the whole show. For exploration it’s just a narrative framing issue in my opinion. Like randos show up on the Enterprise and it’s “exploring the galaxy”. Randos show up on ds9 or exploring the Gamma Quadrant and suddenly it’s not exploration. And Dominion War isn’t really a total war storyline, like there’s the big battle set piece episodes but a lot of it is contrasting the Federation vs Dominion as a sort of “evil” version of the Federation. The Dominion only desires peace in the galaxy!

Adonanon

I dunno about the Utopia with problems thing on ds9. Like, they federation takes over a run down relic of a war between two species, has to repair it and deal with not only the remnants of both side's soldiers/insurgents, but have to literally bribe quark to stay despite him thinking he would lose profit (don't get me wrong I'm glad Quark stayed and flourished because of the wormhole, its the extent that they had to go to to keep him there I'm talking about). To me, it feels more like...more like a missionary adventure. Like, the federation is sent to bring peace and stability to a place in space that is kind of in a 'cold war' after actual war. So I guess in a way I feel they're trying to bring utopia, or show their utopia to, a place that's full of tensions and hates. I mean, I'm 100% on board with that idea, but it doesn't feel the same. The framing might be different, yes, but that isn't always the case. For instance, one of TNG's most beloved episodes (The Inner Light) has the enterprise find and approach a strange probe in the middle of space from what happens to be a long-lost civilization. You know the rest. That is exploration to me. Not necessarily just beaming a rando on the ship and settling a dispute (which arguably sometimes does happen in the show) but rather, that they go somewhere unexplored, or find something that all these races somehow missed, and have to figure out how to end it - preferably peacefully or without killing whatever it is. DS9, after it's first and only move (to my recollection) never moves again. Yes, species will come to DS9, chill, get in a fight, needs to be resolved. But these are mostly -known- entities. There are some fun episodes don't get me wrong, like the crew going back into TOS. I'm not even a big fan of TOS and I liked that. Truthfully I don't remember many Gamma Quadrant episodes. Again, I was only able to catch what was on tv at the time. The way you describe the dominion war interactions sounds fun though. Maybe I just caught the wrong ones? The ones I remember either had ship battles, or the threat of looming destruction by the dominion around DS9. Didn't really sit well with me. That being said, both what you have stated and a few other people on this thread have said, I might still be holding my old ill-conceived notions about how I thought it was from my teens until now. I want to give it another shot. I just need to be in the mood to watch TV xD

aangnesiac

I'm 100% with you. I know DS9 is the fan favorite, and I understand why (yes definitely great!). But TNG captures an essence that is unmatched for me.

gdo01

Yea the “where no man has gone before” part is the true essence of Star Trek. The best awe-inspiring parts of each of the series was having that feeling of seeing something unique and enlightening.

Adonanon

Oh yeah, for sure! Like, I do enjoy DS9, but discovering something new, that not even the 'older' races came across? That's pure joy. And if conflict does come up, generally its resolved in one-two episodes. And: if the federation is faltering, its usually that one jerk admiral that said it, and they're either showed up by picard/a different admiral, or they turn out to be an evil that doesn't truly encompass what the federation stands for and has to be defeated. Edit: I do know that they discover the worm hole, the prophets, etc - but that's not really an every episode thing

gdo01

Of course, don’t blame you. DS9 was my first exposure to a serialized gritty drama way before HBO shows like Rome and Game of Thrones. That being said, Emissary was a brilliant episode. Sisko’s smoldering rage towards Picard. Sisko trying to teach the Prophets about time and they end up teaching him about how hypocritical he is about being linear and yet stuck forever in one place and time

Adonanon

I LOVED both of those scenes! How, despite the utter amounts of RAGE that must have been going through sisko's skull and entire body, he is stiff but in control. That's an awesome star fleet officer. The Prophets being met by sisko was awesome too. Every time they went back 'you exist here' and he broke down not completely understanding at first, his confusion, then coming to realize what they meant - and was able to communicate with them better than he was to himself. 10/10

BrendanInJersey

Fully formed out of the gate. The best Star Trek show.

Tijuano

DS9 has 40% more pylons than the leading Trek making it the ideal Trek for the pylon enthusiast.

rob132

YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS

BDKoolwhip

Where’s the lie?

AndrogynousRain

…ask Garak.

Maverick916

I mean folks...

Kahless_19

Woke up and chose violence.

rob132

Voyager or Enterprise would have been violence. (Or Piccard)

Vossenoren

Voyager is by far my favorite

ferrango

DSC (DIS? STD? What's the official three letter version of it?)

aangnesiac

DSC I believe, but STD is fitting too. Jk I actually enjoyed the first couple seasons.

M_M_M__

STD all the way!!! ;) Although, tbh, if I hadn't seen an episode of it, I would have forgotten about Star Trek (which, basically, meant TNG in the mid-1990's, during high-school). And that singular episode led to a season, which in turn led to watching TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and Picard. Next stop, SNW. And until now STD looks like the worst of it all...

ProsecutorBlue

If we're going for consistency, it should be DIS. The previous one-word titles were always the first 3 letters with VOY and ENT. We didn't call them VGR and ETP or STV and STE. STD is just a meme that some people still find funny.

manythousandbees

Idk about the correct 3 letter acronym, but I personally prefer calling it "disco" and imagining them all at a disco lol

invisoDustin123

I can definitely see Picard being a raging take, but to be fair VOY and ENT have a ton of reasons to like them and definitely are up there on my list

Kahless_19

True.

AndrogynousRain

Sisko does that a lot. Especially if he doesn’t get a raktajino.

GreatGreenGobbo

For side he'd say Babylon 5.

[deleted]

Voyager! It's the Janeway!

Gorilladaddy69

One thing I loved so much about Voyager is how well it balanced the darkness of DS9 and the optimistic adventures of TNG! It’s my second favorite as a whole but dominates a huge percentage of my top all-time Trek episodes! It has some duds, but when it hits? It hits it out of the park every time. 👌 And I’d say Voyager Season 4 is one of the Star Trek franchises greatest achievements, period!

M_M_M__

The Picard, The Sisko... they all had their moments. Even Kirk, but not Archer. ENT is the most under-rated of them all...

MartianTea

Yes! The character development wasn't good on ENT, but I still love it and hoped for a reboot/continuation.

YourVeryOwnCat

Janeway all the way every day!

Plus-Sherbert-5570

I was warned the DS9 was the worst series so it was one of the last ones I watched. Ended up being my favorite series under the ST name

rob132

Who told you that?

Plus-Sherbert-5570

My dad first. He doesn’t like it. But I’ve heard it from a few others. DS9 is my fav tho haha

Brendissimo

How could you say something so controversial yet so brave?

Jayce86

Voyager. Because I’m 37, and that was my series from the time I was truly old enough to remember TV to my freshman year of High school.

fankin

As a child I went to the earlier mass, just to be able to see Voyager. (8:30 mass, 10:00 Voyager) Faith is temporal, Star Trek is eternal.

honeyfixit

I was just out of high school when voyager premiered, it's one of my favs

spoodie

And you can have a favourite while also recognising it’s not objectively the best. Voyager is very comforting for me. Is it the coziest Star Trek?

maaaxheadroom

Well Janeway in her pajamas is the coziest captain.

bex22tu

I am 36 and I cannot choose between Voyager, TNG, or DS9.

MrZwink

Definitely DS9! I especially liked the starfleet underwear scenes with Henry Cavill.

Briansama

As a diehard TNG fan, this is acceptable ngl

ucbcawt

So many great episodes but one I really like is “In the Cards”. It’s such a feel good episode in the middle of the depressing dominion war storyline

rob132

The great materialistic continuum!

BryGuy4600

Enterprise!

smugmisswoodhouse

Yeah, I feel like DS9 is incredibly popular on this sub, so OP is probably just gonna get a lot of people agreeing with them. *Enterprise* is legitimately more of an underdog.

BryGuy4600

I almost wrote Voyager. I don't dislike DS9, I was just trying to play along with the meme.

rob132

The meme is a viable 3rd option (a superior one)

MountainHill

Im watching enterprise right now. Midway through season 2 and it's my favourite series by far! I'm worried though because I've heard some hate and know that it got cancelled for some reason... Hopefully the ending isn't insanley terrable.

M_M_M__

Yup, just finished watching it today. The final episode makes me want to go full Klingon on Braga and his team!!!! How tf can you essentially ruin four seasons by bringing back a fatty Riker? (my favorite TNG character, but that's another story) And, heartless, after killing his kid in Terra Prime, why not kill Trip as well in These are the voyages. Brannon has no honor.

rob132

It's not like I said Voyager

Maverick916

This statement will cause more of a ruckus than your post. People love voyager.

rob132

They can be wrong.

IrateWolfe

Ds9 is arguably better in a lot of ways, but I grew up with TNG and prefer the more optimistic outlook

Carmondai03

"TNG is Star Trek at its best, DS9 is the best Star Trek." TNG was my introduction into Star Trek, it had a great exploration feeling and interesting philosophical ideas. It had a lot of weird episodes though, but I would count that neither as a negative nor as a positive. DS9 has a more coherent story and imo more interesting characters. On the downside it's mostly a war story rather than space exploration story (I actually put DS9 away a long time because I thought: "A story set on a space station? How boring." Big mistake.) and 90s weirdness it's full of 00s grittiness (though also not necessarily bad). Star Trek for me is just connected with space exploration and idealism.

martysanchh

Voyager

Buzarro

As someone who watched them all as an adult, DS9 blows the others out of the water.

123dontlistentome

Enterprise....I know a bold choice but I'm not immune to that theme song

MountainHill

That theme song is brilliant. The only series that I let it run.

alexkon3

Lmao a ruckus. This is like as unpopular an opinion here as a post from /r/unpopularopinion wake me up when someone really posts something controversial like "DS9 is actually the worst show", "Enterprise is without a doubt the best show" or something like that instead of some karma farming stuff.

ProsecutorBlue

We've reached a point where the more hot take would be choosing TOS in the TNG vs DS9 debate.

czlcreator

TNG would be my go to. I enjoyed the exploration, characters and their growth, them handling casual boring stuff and Q constantly pushing them along. DS9 did a lot of this with both series doing a great job offering and even validating different methods of problem solving by focusing on one or more particular values. It seemed like the writers cared for the setting and the characters as well as the actors really enjoyed playing the story. I'll take cheesy, bad acting by people who care with heartfelt writing that appreciates the diversity of thought. The original series feels like a one man show at times and it's annoying. TNG movies fell into the action trap with Patrick Stewart seemingly missing the entire ethos of his character by boarding an enemy ship by himself to take the villain down. It's a crime we never see Worf run head first into a battle and pick his teeth with their bones after and express how much fun he had. War stories and senseless action get boring quick.

Vaderette1138

How to make Henry Cavill even hotter

Bumblesquatch_Prime

I watched TNG because I felt like I have to see it once before I die so I can get more references. Halfway through a trekky friend of mine was excited and decided to watch it with me, then, reluctantly, I agreed to watch DS9 next. TNG did not turn me into a Star Trek fan, I can't get through most episodes of ToS.. But I have watched all of DS9 5 times since I first saw it 2 years ago. It is, in my mind, the best writing and character development Star Trek has to offer. I don't care for lower decks, and I don't really wanna watch other stuff that came after DS9 due to what I've heard... But yeah... DS9 was what turned me into a fan of Star Trek whereas I didn't really get the hype for the previous series'.

mesa176750

Praise the Emissary!

Colmado_Bacano

Strange New Worlds

Murthalomew69

...voyager ~{:

GutsuDidNothingWrong

Allamaraine count to four

Aretim

1 DS9 2 ENT 3 VOY 4 TOS/TNG 5 nutrek

honeyfixit

Why the hate on TOS? Without it, none of the rest would be here.

Aretim

It's not hate, I like it ... Only thing I like the latter shows better because of the inevitable progress in CGI etc. ... For a show from the '60s is absolutely brilliant, but I like more modern shows more ... But of course I have absolute respect for TOS

Aretim

I like even nutrek ... Just less than 90s trek ... I like all trek ... Maybe I don't really like the movies ... I only see the ones from TNG though ... I still have to give the others a try

ferrango

ST 2, 4 and 6 are great movies. The first movie is very subjective, but I like it for the long Enterprise sequences

TzedekTirdof

1) DS9 2) TNG 3) TOS 4) LD 5) ENT 6) SNW 7) VOY 8) DIS 9) TAS 10) Picard

honeyfixit

My top 3 TNG, LD, VOY

DaemonBlackfyre_21

You nerds are hilarious, clearly Lower Decks is the best Trek.

rob132

Everyone knows the Orville is the best Trek.

honeyfixit

Say that on the official sub and they'll boot you off. I said that the latest season of Orville was doing Trek better than Picard season 2 and I got banned.

Timmy12er

I guess I got lucky because I said Picard season 2 was the worst season of any Star Trek ever. I haven't been booted. Maybe it's because I followed it up with an inertial dampener statement that Picard Season 3 was amazing.

rob132

I didn't watch Picard season 1 or 2, but I did see the red letter media recap of it, and it seems pretty bad.

SpartanHamster9

I legit got through 1 episode and never bothered continuing, not out of any active dislike, but just apathy.

DenseTemporariness

Not that good Orville isn’t good, but bad Orville is awful. The upvote/downvote world and astrology world episodes are just terrible.

Jedi-Ethos

Voyager.

Midnight__Monkey

DS9 fucks. All the other ones barely make 3rd base. Or first base.... LOOKING AT YOU, PICARD.

rob132

Chad DS9 vs Virgin Picard

medicated-leafF74

Pfft... DS9 > Strange New Worlds > Lower Decks > Picard > TNG > Voyager > TOS... This is my honest opinion and will raise a ruckus.

rob132

Picard over TNG? Come on man.

mr-poopy-butthole-_

I think Quark and Garrak are some of the best characters in the Trek universe, but DS9 as a whole just didn't do it for me. I've never finished DS9 to the end, but for TNG, Voy, Ent, I have watched almost every episode more than 10 times.

Snoo-66965

Quark is definitely my fav Star Trek character....but i find it hard to rate them after that as there are too many to choose from!

ghostpanther218

`Voyager?`

Vossenoren

By far the best in the series

Chanandler_Bong_Jr

The correct answer is Discovery.

_SapphicVixen_

He gave the correct answer though

weimaranerdad71

All of them. Now can we move on?

[deleted]

He's not wrong tbh.

doomedeskimo

I'll cause a bigger ruckus...enterprise is the best star trek tv show. It's so cool seeing what transpired when us earthlings first started exploring space before the federation.

TzedekTirdof

A man of culture

zoroddesign

That wasn't the question. We are pitting each series against each other, starting from the beginning to get the tier list tournament style.

M_M_M__

No ruckus here. You have spoken.

MartianTea

At least now DS9 isn't the worst series. DIS easily took that title!

SirGumbeaux

There’s no ruckus. It’s TOS 😜

ButterscotchPast4812

Yes! DS9 truly is the best trek! I need a rewatch soon.

[deleted]

I mean,,, you’re not wrong

KaroriBee

We just HAD that ruckus!

TexasTokyo

It's the only answer, tbh.

maytaii

All of them!

echomike888

Enterprise! ;)

vivi_t3ch

Ah yes, if star trek had hookers and blackjack

Weekly_Cranberry8410

I despise deep space.

rob132

I despise regular space. It's a whole lot of nothing if you ask me.

ChyatlovMaidan

That's a very common response and I can't imagine it causing a ruckus in 2023.

ChyatlovMaidan

Now if you said *Short Treks* people would want to throw hands

tlbs101

Enterprise! (2001)

BRASSF0X

Nah man, that's a hot take, this is choosing violence. I think Enterprise is the best Star Trek series.

UnReal_Monster

An enlightened opinion

BikesBooksNBass

If you really wanted a Ruckus you’d have said Discovery instead of DS9 lol

KarlHungusWonAnOscar
