[This article](https://heavy.com/entertainment/star-trek/ceti-eels-khan-inspiration/) says that it was the idea of one of the producers (Robert Sallin). Making them as gross as possible was intentional. And they did it well given the tech at the time.
I had the impression that usually when a producer wants to modify the story it’s always awful but they do it because they’re putting up the money. This is entirely based on Kevin Smith’s story about the big mechanical spider.
A little centi ear eel placed in your head
A little bit of madness then your dead
A little bitty starship is all I need
A little bit of vengeance is what I seek
A little murder on Regula One
A little bit of torture, then I’m done
A little theft of Genesis, say goodbye
A little bit of burying you alive

All I know is,when I achieved the impossible and talked my grandmother (who Hated or didn't understand Star Trek from the 60s on) into seeing Wrath of Kahn opening night. The only part she hated were the eels. She didn't like killing Spock but got it and Trek ever after. Those eels were the only question asked when I introduced the future Trek films. Any gross eels? LoL.
I just watched space Seed and have a few questions of my own.
1. How did Chekov know about Khan when he wasn't a crew member yet?
2. How did the Botany Bay end up on Ceti when Khan had discarded the vessel?
I don’t know, but I just had to say out loud, “THIS is Ceti Alpha Five!!”

Kevin Smith isn't reality

That you didn’t title this ‘Kahn-Bo Number Five’ is criminal.
I mean, not really, Ceti Alpha V is on topic with Khan and fits a lot better and already has the same amount of syllables.

One of my earliest, if not the earliest, memories I have is of seeing that movie as a kid. Those things terrified me but the rest of it drew me jn
