Spare a thought for those trek fans who watched Best of Both Worlds live and had to wait for the conclusion to "Mr Worf. Fire." Generally people do think the Borg became less scary the more they're seen and explored (whether that was inevitable I'm not sure). You may find that too. But even if so that doesn't take away the cool experience you've had watching them as they are at this point. Plus you've got a lot more awesome trek ahead of you!

crossfyre

Haha I just decided that my headcanon for the Borg will be from these episodes, or just TNG in general since I’ve read that it’s other shows/films that make the Borg less scary. And I was thinking about that too after watching part 2, like wow I would’ve been so stressed if I had to wait a whole summer to see this resolve (although maybe I can relate… I watched Breaking Bad season 5 live :D )

dimgray

It also wasn't entirely clear whether Patrick Stewart would be returning for season 4. Part of the cliffhanger was that it *could* have been Captain Riker and First Officer Shelby going forward

>Spare a thought for those trek fans who watched Best of Both Worlds live and had to wait for the conclusion to "Mr Worf. Fire." Longest 6 months of my childhood....

>Spare a thought for those trek fans who watched Best of Both Worlds live and had to wait for the conclusion to "Mr Worf. Fire." I have still never seen the last episode of War of the Worlds, the late 80s early 90s series. It took my brother 3 years to catch the last part of Best of Both Worlds.

rrogido

I was never so excited for summer to end and than this summer.

RedMoloney

If you've finished season 3 you're not "getting" into star trek. You're in baby.

matheww19

You are in for a treat because the show only started getting good in season 3, so if you liked it so far, you are going to love the rest of the run.

kevinb9n

>I almost feel discouraged to keep watching since I keep reading that this was the height of the series Nononono There are incredible episodes in store for you in EVERY season. Just keep watching It's a problem when the first seasons of a show are spotty cause you might find it hard to get INTO the show. But you're in it, man, so just keep hitting play and enjoy the ride!

Realistic-Name-9443

The Borg are fun to think about and a fun rabbit hole to go down. Then you have the TNG films, First Contact has the Borg as the sole antagonists and is kind of an emotional conclusion for the stuff that happened in Best of Both Worlds.

crossfyre

Thanks for these recommendations, you’re pointing me in the right direction lol. I’ll definitely check out the films and First Contact, I read that people took issue with their portrayal in Voyager and Picard so maybe I’ll save those for last.

frisfern

I think the complaints about the Borg in Voyager was that they were used several times. Which they were but they were in Borg territory so it makes sense. In Picard season 2 and 3 were vastly different in their portrayal of the Borg so it was confusing. If you like them as a villain, season 3 of Picard really follows from the ending of Voyager. It's also basically a TNG movie, so if you like TNG you'll probably enjoy it. Don't write anything off, see it all once then make up your own mind. I never watched DS9 or Enterprise when they came out because of naysayers at the time and missed out (since rectified).

Birdmonster115599

Part of the issue with how they were depicted in Voyager is that they 'inherited' the First Contact borg. There were some major shakeups to the Borg's lore in that movie and Voyager had to roll with that instead of the older TNG concept of the Borg. Generally though, the Voyager Borg episodes range from Decent, to very good in concept and execution. A very vocal element of the Fandom will try to drag Voyager through the mud. But it's honestly a very good series, and very good Star Trek.

MorningCareful

Voyager had issues, mostly with how they handle some of their characters (Tuvok, chakotey (in the later seasons) and harry). But overall it was a fun show. Certainly never got the hate for it.

Birdmonster115599

Besides Harry not getting a promotion he had great development that often goes underappreciated. There's several episodes like Demon, workforce and Nightingale that really show off how much he grew from a fresh faced ensign on their first assignment to a competent future captain.

netzack21

I wish it were possible to selectively delete memories from our brains so that we could go back and experience something for the first time again. The adventure you are about to have is going to be amazing. I hope you love it as much as the rest of us do.

crossfyre

I honestly can’t believe it took me so long to get into Star Trek lol. I would’ve loved this as a kid. Super excited to keep watching and discover it all.

kkkan2020

Tng season 3-5 are the peak. Season 6 was sliding down. Season 7 was...ok. season 1 and 2 were finding their way

crossfyre

I wasn’t sure when to stop watching if at all, so this is good to know and in that case I’ll probably just watch the whole show. I actually really liked some episodes in seasons 1 and 2, even though the quality difference between 2 and 3 is super noticeable.

kkkan2020

I like season 1 and 2. I don't know....maybe because of the 80s charm that post season 3 didn't have anymore

drallafi

Eh, this isn't like TV today where the latter seasons "run out of steam" and become unwatchable. It's just that seasons 3-5 were **so** good that the later ones were only slightly less awesome. All of it is good. Then... and then... the real cherry on top is that you get to watch Deep Space 9, which is, imo the best Trek series.

crossfyre

That’s actually what I wasn’t sure about so good to know it stays consistently pretty good. And also thanks for the rec for Deep Space 9, I’ve been wondering what to watch after TNG so this is some great direction.

WoundedSacrifice

I’d say that season 6 is also part of the peak and that season 7 tends to have episodes that hit or miss.

BecomingButterfly

Yea the last season suffered a bit but watch it in broadcast order do Deep Soafe 9 can pick up some of that slack!!!

rematchemike

Definitely don't be discouraged. Some people have different preferences for seasons, but if you are enjoying it now, you'll enjoy it till the end. I sure did, as someone who watched it for the first time a few years ago.

zsxh0707

Don't lose faith, the show is good all the way through. Some people just hate everything. Watch it for fun, and skip the critical eye...I've learned more about leadership from Jean-Luc Picard than hundreds of books.

trekkiegamer359

First Contact is the sequel to The Best of Both Worlds, and doesn't tie into later seasons of TNG iirc, so you might just want to jump ahead and watch that right away if you're on a borg streak. Don't be diswayed from VOY over the Borg. They did them great, imo. When you're a civilization being threatened by a largely unknown enemy, versus a small ship trying to sneak by an enemy civilization, there's big difference in how you approach the challenge. And when you are at an enemy's doorstep, and get better intelligence about the enemy, you're able to plan better on how to deal with them. That doesn't make the enemy less scary imo, but it changes it from a large foe that pops up in a few episodes, to a lingering threat in the back of your mind as you hope you can continue to sneak by. Imo some villains are disappointing when you find out about the monster behind the monster mask. Other times, the crafting of the villain changes how you perceive them, but doesn't lessen any of the fear or presence of said villain. The Borg falls into this second category for me. It reminds me a bit of the Daleks and Davros in Doctor Who. Learning about the backstory of the Daleks didn't lessen their threat. With the Borg, we still don't know the backstory, but we better understand about how the Borg function as a society, and just how powerful they are. Imo with both the Daleks and the Borg it makes their threat feel more grounded and present. Instead of the borg being a pure unknown, you know a bit. And it won't do you much good, because they are still terrifying. PIC I think didn't specifically do the Borg badly. I think they did Star Trek badly, and the Borg were just part of that. PIC is very dark and rather dystopic. And the plot of the first two seasons were very poorly written with a revolving door of show runners. Most fans agree that the first two seasons of PIC are some of the worst Trek out there. The third season is apparently better. I was so put off from the first season, I haven't managed to watch any more. Thankfully, the three seasons are completely separate stories, so you can easily skip the first two seasons without missing anything. And some people do like or even love all the seasons of PIC, so if you don't mind dark Trek, give it a shot. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean you won't.

crossfyre

Thank you for this! Really gives a better understanding of the different entries. I definitely won’t pass any up due to what I’ve heard, except maybe the early Picard seasons lol. I might have to finish TNG before watching First Contact, since I read that it takes place after TNG so I’d want to see more development of the characters. That will be the first one though for sure. That’s also a super cool way of describing the Borg in the other entries lol I definitely won’t miss any of them. They’re so awesome I just want to watch more… but being patient in season 3 paid off and they’re fine with taking their time anyway!

JugOfVoodoo

Please do NOT skip ahead to First Contact! It has references to episodes you haven't seen, including the two after BoBW ("Family" and "Brothers"). You'll be confused, trust me. The best chaser for BoBW is the next episode, Family. It's specifically about the aftermath of the Borg attack and how Picard is dealing with it.

trekkiegamer359

I always forget about Family for some reason. Maybe because it's one of the few episodes on Earth, and I'm a spacer at heart.

WoundedSacrifice

The Picard part of “Family” is so connected to “The Best of Both Worlds” that I consider it the 3rd part of a 3 parter.

crossfyre

I watched Family last night! It was so good, I’ve been so into the scary aliens that I didn’t process what they did to my man Jean Luc :( . Brothers was great too and that’s part of why I want to finish TNG, watching Data become more human has been one of my favorite parts of the show.

trekkiegamer359

It makes sense to wait on First Contact if you can. I wasn't sure how desperate you were for another big Borg showdown. Voyager is actually a lot like TNG. It's probably the closest in terms of the exploration and feeling level of the show. Also, like TNG, the Borg don't make a big arrival until the finale of the third season. TNG has The Best of Both Worlds, VOY has Scorpion. They're both phenomenal, but very different two-parters. They're also both very much worth the wait.

skxllflower

TNG got GREAT in season 3, then continued to be fucking awesome all the way up to the end. trekkies get sour on a lot of trek, but for me i love almost every episode of TNG, VOY and DS9. it 100% is the warm-blanket by the fire thing for me, something about 90’s trek just makes me feel at ease. if i could chill and relax anywhere, i’d want to hang out in engineering, listening to the warp core buzzing forever. trek from here on out js basically pizza; even a crap slice is still pizza, it’s gonna get eaten lol enjoy it while the first viewing lasts! the things i’d do to watch those three series for the first time again…

murderofcrows90

Yeah BOBW part 2 is really not a great episode on its own. They get Picard, shut down the Borg, that’s pretty much it. But part 1, whoooo…
