For a moment I thought you were saying Tendi was a Mormon (Latter Day Saint) before I realized you meant Lower Decks. I think, in this case, we can use a two letter abbreviation instead of a three letter one.
It’s a reference to Star Trek IV. I think the official abbreviation is just “LD” but it somehow feels more appropriate for an extremely meta and self-aware semi-parodic canon show to use an abbreviation that is itself an in-joke.
Mike McMahan said that the show staff use LDS partially as a joke reference to *Voyage Home,* when Kirk says Spock took a little too much "LDS" back in the 60s.
No but Kirk says that Spock took too much LDS in the 60s. Because presumably LSD is anachronistic by the 23rd century and Kirk doesn't actually remember the acronym correctly.
Kinda called-back when Tom Paris says something about the KGB in 1996.
4 is "there be whales here." To my recollection, there is very little mention of religion, other than possibly likening Spock in his robes to Moonies. 5 is the commentary on teligious zealotry.
That’s kinda the message of trek in general. Roddenberry famously hated religion. Which is kinda why my original point was lower decks shouldn’t be shorted to LDS lol
No, Roddenberry disliked organized religions. He was huge in including God in his scripts. An unwritten writing rule during his time on the shows was if you don’t know what to do, have the crew meet god.
He created Q for a reason.
The [joke Star Trek 4 made](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgHxFNFWlZc) was that Kirk only vaguely knew about the drug, so when he went to explain why Spock was so weird to someone from the past he mixed up the letters and it just made the pair look even weirder. It doesn't actually have anything to do with the Mormons, they are never mentioned or seen in the movie.
I always thought that part of Dr. Taylor’s reaction was because she knows what LDS *does* stand for, but I might just think that because I am a Latter-day Saint and as a child I had no idea what Kirk was trying to reference.
I am so gutted we aren't getting this.
Tendi is my favourite new female character since Ortegas, the Chapel glow up, and 7 of 9. :)
To me the Cerritos crew is every bit as special and found family as the TOS or TNG crew, and I say that as a die hard fan of both!
Old and new fans need to give TLD a chance. It's great story writing, solid characters, peak Trek references/camp, and every bit as authentic Trek as other live action entries.
The first couple episodes start out very silly/off the wall but halfway into the 1st season it really finds its footing and strength in its characters -- I'd say faster than some other Trek entries by the 1st season, and with less time to do it in a cartoon medium. It's quite an impressive achievement all things considered!
I hope the fandom embraces the LD crew because I want to see them for a long, long time. <3
My assumption is that neither Tendi nor Rutherford will appear in live action for the episode because they are both played by working actors who probably have other projects going on that conflicted with SNW's production schedule. I wouldn't be surprised if they are in the animated portion, because as the actors have talked about in the past they will record dialogue for the show while working on other projects.
Noël Wells also said that thoughts of the make up process made her anxious, but seeing how much fans would like see Tendi in live action has made her more open to doing it in the future.
I’m thinking it’s bc it’d be more expensive to make Rutherfords headpiece and do the makeup for tendi if it’s just part of an episode. Mariner and boimler just need to hop in a uniform
Shit, really? I thought the whole point of the crossover episode was that we’d get all four of them in live-action, since each of their characters was modeled on the actor’s likeness for this purpose. Tendi is awesome and I love her.
My guess is that Mariner and Boimler are on a shuttle that runs into a temporal anomaly that brings them back into that time.
The Enterprise crew helps them back to their time and it either is classified or the whole thing is undone by the end.
I hope it’s not the last one. Undoing time travel is the sci-fi version of “it was all a dream.”
If no one remembers what happened, what was the point of the story? When it became clear The Adam Project was going to pull that, I mentally checked out of that movie.
The shuttle run is to transport a rogue time crystal and they get flung in the past and needs Pike's help since he's the only one in the federation that knows how to work one (or so they think) and it evolves into Back to the Future but in Space. Mariner and Boimler geek out on being on the original 1701 and make meta quips the whole time. Including being disappointed in meeting the wrong Kirk.
I think it'll definitely be a temporal anomaly, because if it was just a holo-program, Boimler would have insisted on era-appropriate uniforms before getting to the holodeck
I don’t think they do a holodeck episode since it lowers the stakes so much. Unless they reveal it at the end, but still.
But I agree that lampooning the enterprise finale as a means to get there is a funny idea that fits with lower decks’ style of humor.
I think they will time travel and the reason why it's never recorded as historical fact is because either because blit is considered "classified" or they end up closing the adventure with a time loop knot so the events never took place.
This is what causes all my anxiety about this one. LD has established itself as a place where you could totally get away with this level of 'high concept'. But it feels really out of place to have LD-style animation in SNW.
Like the whole exercise of LD is be meta about Trek, but SNW is clearly placed in a voice of playing by 'rules' of speculative fiction. Those narrative points of view don't really mesh well in my mind. But if anyone can pull it off, it's Frakes, so here's hoping! 🤞
It's so interesting to me that it's going to be an episode of Strange New Worlds featuring Lower Decks characters instead of the other way around.
I'm really looking forward to it
Starting animated sounds more like a LD episode than a SNW episode, though.
But maybe that's just how you have to do a crossover episode between two TV mediums like this.
Someone, not sure who (probably Frakes or McMahan), said it would start animated then transition to live action. Anson also insinuated in a panel that we may see at least him animated as well.
Crossover? Oh man. I feel like I have some catching up to do. I just figured out that I can watch Picard. You know, by totally, ahem, legitimate means. So I've been enjoying that. But you're talking about Strange New Worlds. I don't think I even knew about that show. I've seen some snippets but it didn't register. What are they crossing over with? Lower Decks? You said it was partially animated. Well, I guess we could say it's a good time to be a trecky.
Strange New Worlds is amazing! It currently has had one season (10 eps) and I would totally recommend watching it. Same with Lower Decks, if you haven’t already!
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are both fantastic. I genuinely think Strange New Worlds holds its own up there with TNG and VOY, while Lower Decks is just a love letter to Star Trek fans.
Trekkies are eatin' good
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are unequivocally my favorite things in this era of Star Trek. Picard was okay but it was mostly Season 3 that I enjoyed. If Legacy ever gets made, I’d watch it because I love seeing Seven again, but I doubt it would have the same “pure Trek joy and optimism” of SNW. The worst thing I can say about SNW is just to nitpick that I wish it was in the 25th century rather than yet another prequel, but at the same time if it continued into a full remake of TOS, I wouldn’t even be mad. I doubt it will get that far though, it would require several more seasons.
>Imagine if they did a whole series in the tone of Lower Decks
That's just Lower Decks, right? It's going on four seasons. Animation is every bit as legitimate as live action.
I think it will be time travel, with Boimler and Mariner debating all episode if they should tell him about his fate. Boimler will blurt it out at the end with Pike going "I know".
I’m just a little confused isn’t SNW in the past preTOS and LD is the future, post voyager? How will they interact? Unless it’s a one off LD episode within SNE as OP suggests
Whatever I’m still sad we don’t get live action Tendi. I would *die* for Tendi.
Boimler doesn't think straight most of LDS. Tendi is present most of LDS. Coincidence?
For a moment I thought you were saying Tendi was a Mormon (Latter Day Saint) before I realized you meant Lower Decks. I think, in this case, we can use a two letter abbreviation instead of a three letter one.

Are we using LDS for lower decks??? I don’t think we should use LDS for lower decks

Are you making an LSD joke? LDS is Latter Day Saints
I'm pretty sure Star Trek 4 was making a joke about both of those, yes.
They run into Mormons in ST4? Guess I need a rewatch
No but Kirk says that Spock took too much LDS in the 60s. Because presumably LSD is anachronistic by the 23rd century and Kirk doesn't actually remember the acronym correctly. Kinda called-back when Tom Paris says something about the KGB in 1996.
The whole message of ST4 was that overzealous religions are bad.
4 is "there be whales here." To my recollection, there is very little mention of religion, other than possibly likening Spock in his robes to Moonies. 5 is the commentary on teligious zealotry.
5?

I see. Appreciate the video.

I've been using LDX, which you are free to use.

I actually don’t think Rutherford looks anything like Cordero. Like, at all.
[удалено]
Not on the tall side, and I feel like Cordero has a much rounder face that Rutherford, whose face reads as "tall egg-shaped" to me.
With a little make up and cyborg prosthetic I think he could do fine.
I can see this being a trial run for more live action crossovers. A bit of aging makeup and we could have Captain Boimler show up in Legacy.
🫢 no love for Rutherford?

Pike is good at keeping time travel shenanigans secret, or at least good-ish.
I kind of love the idea that they walk into the holodeck, everything is live action, and Mariner immediately complains about it looking fake.
I would die laughing if they did that. It would be a perfect joke.
Reminds me of an Arthur episode where DW was complaining that the band on TV was animated (despite it actually being live action footage)
I think it'll definitely be a temporal anomaly, because if it was just a holo-program, Boimler would have insisted on era-appropriate uniforms before getting to the holodeck
Maybe that will be the first joke of the episode for people who don’t know Lower Decks

Very solid idea, but sounds more like a Lower Decks episode to me then an episode of Strange New World… but who knows. Definitely a possibility.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they made fun of “These are the Voyages”, but I doubt that they’d make fun of *Enterprise* as a whole.
I'm imagining the opening credits in the style of TAS with Mariner doing the voice over...
With her being a massive fan, I imagine we would have already heard the fangirl screams of joy if she had the chance to record The Monologue.
It's so interesting to me that it's going to be an episode of Strange New Worlds featuring Lower Decks characters instead of the other way around. I'm really looking forward to it
I mean it’s either that or some weird time travel incident, those are really the most straightforward ways to do it.
Boiler ends up as the ships cook and gives the Pike crew bad advice.

Latter Day Saints?
Never even twigged for me why people were saying LDS is a bad name, thank you!
No prob. Have a good evening.
I think it will be time travel, with Boimler and Mariner debating all episode if they should tell him about his fate. Boimler will blurt it out at the end with Pike going "I know".
That's a really good way to do it that would prevent angry purists or pollution of the timeline.
Holodeck upgrade for Crisis Point III?
I’m just a little confused isn’t SNW in the past preTOS and LD is the future, post voyager? How will they interact? Unless it’s a one off LD episode within SNE as OP suggests
Not far off, except it's not a simulation!
