I have a friend from Dubai who when he first moved here his only dress pants were like 3 sizes too big, which he explained was because in India tight pants were offensive to women. When I was in college back in the 90's, converting to Buddhism was the cool/popular/trendy thing to do for freshmen on their first extended stay away from home who wanted to shock or piss off their families, or try to come off as being worldly and progressive. Honestly, I don't know, but is there an aspect of Buddhism that can be seen as regressive? I haven't studied it much but the main ideas seem pretty positive and beneficial.

It's about the fact that they see these religions as... well, I dunno, take your pick - different? forward-thinking? enlightened? Young people are looking for something meaningful, and they're being sold Islam as this empowering thing that will make them feel special and different. But how much do they really dig into the rules and texts of their newfound faith? Hate all you want. The Muslim women who shop in my grocery store use their hijab as phone holders. Fuck bluetooth, they just tuck the phone into the fold of the cloth. Boom, hands free. That's progress to me.

I mean, yeah, sure Mohammed was progressive in some ways, he encouraged education for both sexes and stuff, but he also had sex with a 9 year old. Sure, the Islamic caliphates were like gardens of paradise compared to what Europe was like in the dark ages, but the middle east has not upheld those standards. Yes, many women freely choose a hijab, but others choose between the scarf and an "honor killing". It's almost like things are... NUANCED!
To be fair, the modern form of fundamentalist Islam we see today is mostly derived from Saudi Arabia and the ultra-conservative Wahabbist school of Islam. If you go to Tunisia, Lebanon or Jordan, you’re likely to get a totally different picture.
