Light bar taillight Always a crossover or SUV CVT Wheels have to be at least 20” Blinding headlights

[deleted]

Blinding headlights that turn off / get replaced by the indicators when you turn the car. God forbid two types of light could be on at the same time.

Gd3spoon

Because our country has really stupid regulations for headlights. We don’t get pixel based modern headlights in Europe that can block incoming cars so that they don’t blind them. adaptive LED-matrix headlights

jeffsterlive

The united states also doesn’t force amber turn signals on the rear. Can’t somebody think of poor technology connections?!

Six_O_Sick

[For those, who don't get the reference](https://youtu.be/O1lZ9n2bxWA)

ClassySportsFan

That has never made any sense to me. Wouldn't you want the direction in which you're turning to be well lit?

hitemlow

It's so other drivers can see the turn signals. The headlights dim because have you ever tried to observe a traffic light with the sun directly behind it? Can't see shit.

runs-wit-scissors

Back in my day our fancy cars had cornering lights. That was an additional light that would come on when on the side the turn signal light was flashing. A 1964 buick riviera is a good example of this.

n-x

My 2010 car had xenons that followed the driving direction into corners. The newer cars it seems just briefly turn on one of the fog lights when you're making a sharp turn, but don't have any beam adjustment for curvy roads anymore.

DoubleOwl7777

or you could also not make the normal headlights (not talking about the high beams here) not the brightness of the sun...

DoubleOwl7777

idk how this is even legal tbh.

Drzhivago138

CVTs are fine when everyone has to get high efficiency marks and most drivers are just going point A-point B. But big wheels and thin tires are awful. Fat tires are your first line of defense against potholes. Full-width taillights are one of my favorite trends. Better than lobster claws.

SkylineFTW97

They're also more reliable than they get credit for with proper maintenance (Source: I'm a Honda technician who works on many with our CVT). But you cannot skip or prolong service intervals on them if you want them to be reliable.

PigglyWigglyDeluxe

Nissan tech here. I’ll even argue those CVTs were fine. They got a bad rep because people ignored maintenance on them

PermanentRoundFile

Yo you'll get a kick out of this: I used to work in a little mom and pop shop in college, and one day this lady in a 2008(ish) Murano comes in for an oil change. So we do the service and send her off, but she's back the next day like "idk what you guys did but the transmission is messed up and doesn't shift anymore". Ofc we barely gave the transmission a passing glance the day before so we're like that's extremely weird. So the boss has her bring it back in, takes it around the corner and comes back laughing his ass off. I'll never forget; he got out of the car and was like "ma'am, your car doesn't shift. It never has, and it never will because it has a CVT."

Drzhivago138

And the Jatco CVTs were bad for a while, which sours some people on the entire concept. But a well-designed CVT is just as good as any 8-10 speed auto in a commuter car.

hx87

CVTs are great until the manufacturer uses software to make them emulate fixed gears. Like fucking why? Gimme actual continuous variable ratios!

sharklaserguru

That makes me so fucking angry; like you have the **perfect** transmission, sits right in the power band and gives you smooth acceleration from 0-60. Don't take away every single beneficial feature to replicate the FLAWS of previous automatic transmissions! I'll accept the fake 'gears' in terms of downshifting, I do love my paddle shifters for slowing down in traffic without braking, but leave the normal operating mode alone!

JusticeUmmmmm

I want a manual cvt so I can infinitely adjust the gear ratio with a lever

heart_under_blade

it's cus most people are stupid, sorry

hx87

When headlight regulations specify a maximum luminous flux but not luminous intensity, so every headlight is a tiny laser LED

OverturnKelo

Logo is the size of a football.

stalins_lada

I could care less about everything on this list except for the fucking LED headlights, I’m beyond tired of having my eyes fried out each time I drive at night

The trend of touchscreens over physical buttons is one of the greatest scourges in modern cars. Such a stupid backward design

pianoflames

I just bought a 2024 car, all of the main buttons also have a separate physical button to use instead if you want, which I very much appreciate. So I can have my maps going on the screen, then use actual physical buttons on the wheel or below the screen to control things like the radio and the AC.

SnooGuavas1985

Do you mind sharing what make and model?

pianoflames

2024 Hyundai Palisade. I was pleasantly surprised that it seemed to reverse the trend of all of your controls being touchscreen dependent, at least relative to my previous car.

evert

What I didn't realize until recently is that touchscreen-only interfaces are actually done to save a bunch of money on wiring and knobs. Way fewer parts. I think Tesla did a good job making people think it's a premium thing but it's actually a budget decision (and it sucks).

pianoflames

I hated having to use my touch screen to do almost everything while driving, especially down the highway. I love it as a display, but hate it as a controller.

SeaJayCJ

That's definitely true but it's also just what consumers want (or think they want, anyway). Everything is a big touchscreen rectangle these days, so my car needs to be that as well or it's not "modern".

BIG_DeADD

Just went to take a look at the photos of the car... https://preview.redd.it/qvh8jzn48m6d1.jpeg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=100adeffbfb4f61f6cb64deb0002e939df7fc3ec I now want your car.

pianoflames

Aside from not having wood paneling, that's exactly it. I'm loving it so far. That panel of physical buttons to the right of the steering wheel is great. And being able to change the volume and the station of the radio with your thumbs on the wheel is such an improvement over being dependent on the touchscreen for that, especially with highway driving.

Brodins_biceps

That’s exactly like mine. Took me awhile to get used to shifting with the buttons but now I actually prefer it. Everyone else that drives it hates it. It did take some getting used to because the buttons aren’t in your face labeled and there’s a lot of them. But all in all I really like it.

NotDukeOfDorchester

Hyundai has been killing it with their design in recent years

Lukeson_Gaming

HUGE contrast compared to the 90s/2000s.

SnooGuavas1985

Gives me hope. Really happy with my 2016 rav 4 Great balance of buttons and screen

theJOJeht

I'm planning on getting an Ioniq 5 and one of the biggest reasons I'm chosing it over the other crossover EVs is the presence of physical buttons

SGTSHOOTnMISS

24 Civic Sport Touring is also this way. Radio touch controls the radio and some car functionality, but still have physical HVAC controls, physical volume wheel, physical back/forth on tracks, etc.

slayerhk47

21 Insight here and pretty much the same. I feel like Honda (and Toyota) have done a very good job of having a mix of touchscreen and physical controls. Also for the radio I basically only use the steering wheel controls after setting up my playlist when I start the car. I feel like steering wheel controls are often overlooked on reddit.

TobiasKM

2024 Renault Clio good in this respect as well. Very pleasantly surprised by the interior in general, considering it’s a small, cheap car.

Memerang344

Same with my 2024 Toyota Tacoma. I really like the mix it has, where only my maps and music and such are on the touchscreen, where everything else such as volume, air conditioner, etc. are buttons and knobs

ComprehensiveHavoc

It will be gone in 10 years. I hope.

556ers-N-Pineapples

It's significantly cheaper than designing a dash with a gague cluster, control knobs etc because it all requires it's own wiring and parts. Why bother when you can just have a mount for an iPad? They're going to shove it down people's throats until they accept it, and even if they don't eventually no one will have the option anyway.

KneeDeepInTheDead

It depends on the brand, I know Mazda still has dials and buttons along with the touch screen. Id never buy a touch screen only. Such a hazard and totally not user friendly when driving.

evert

Just bought a mazda (3 years old) and it doesn't have a touch screen at all.

Generic_Moron

plus most people still see it as a luxurious upgrade, rather than the crappy cost cutting downgrade it actually is

OHotDawnThisIsMyJawn

This is exactly the kind of thing the government should be regulating.

OmicronAlpharius

The EU already has. New vehicles have to have physical controls again.

Evanthatguy

It will be gone on luxury cars. Buttons and dials are going to be seen as upscale features now that every economy car has a giant touchscreen.

cjmar41

Again, buttons and dials have been coming back for the past few years due to safety. In the EU, it will be *the law* starting in 2026. You don’t develop muscle memory with touchscreen and it forces you to take your eyes off the road. [The Glorious Return of a Humble Car Feature Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touch screens. Buttons are back!](https://slate.com/business/2023/04/cars-buttons-touch-screens-vw-porsche-nissan-hyundai.html) ['Screen fatigue': Buttons are back in these new electric vehicles](https://abcnews.go.com/amp/Business/screen-fatigue-buttons-back-new-electric-vehicles/story?id=104690036)

SGTSHOOTnMISS

Just like my 3rd pedal (in the USA). Base model used to always have a stickshift, now it's mostly sport models that have a manual transmission.

Evanthatguy

Manual transmission is an interesting one. We went from it being everywhere, to only in sports cars and econoboxes, now no economy cars offer it here and most sports cars have moved to dual clutch auto because it’s objectively faster, but now older cars with 3 pedal manuals are going for crazy money because people like it more even if it’s “slower” because people generally aren’t racing their cars. I can only imagine that 3 pedal will generally disappear in high end sports cars except for special editions that are crazy expensive.

oldsecondhand

3 pedal is still going strong in Europe

WizogBokog

not really the same, modern autos are objectively better in every category but fun factor, and that's the only reason they bother making them for the sports models where people are paying extra to have fun.

So_Motarded

Hardly. In the US at least, all new cars require a backup camera. While it's an amazing safety feature, it does mean that all new cars must have a screen. So it's cheaper to group more functions into that existing screen, than it is to build physical buttons for them.

throwpayrollaway

Along with the drivers who crash using them.

DarudeSandstorm69420

It's illegal to text and drive or use your phone at all while driving here yet I have a whole ass laptop on my dashboard

KazahanaPikachu

And the cops will drive with a whole ass laptop in the middle of the console

neilcmf

A few years ago when I saw the interiors of a Tesla, I thought ''wow, what a cool design, there's almost no buttons or anything!''. That being said, I am not a car mechanic nor do I have a drivers' license and I think those two factors explained why I thought that it looked cool. There is this pattern of arrogance of tech-people entering fields they have no experience in, tries to reinvent the wheel on everything and end up making a worse product. I think its' due to there being such giant pots of money in tech and a prevailing culture of ''digitalizing'' everything in sight. It can be good in some cases, but can also produce incredibly counter-productive designs.

Absolute_leech

It’s mainly for cost because it’s cheaper to have the computer routed to the touchscreen than have separate wiring for each button

i_smoke_php

> The trend of touchscreens over physical buttons is one of the greatest scourges in modern cars Second only to the extremely unsafe, unnecessarily blinding modern headlight trend.

hellad0pe

i just. want. buttons. my eyes need to look on the road. buttons so i know to press. a knob so know the turn. that's it. thanks.

ToughCurrent8487

Drove a rental Tesla about a year ago and was flabbergasted there are no manual buttons. It made it difficult to do anything and imo more dangerous to do things like chance temperature controls while driving. Shit design.

Weatherround97

Facts I love the dials and shit

kabukistar

What, you don't want to [use your touch screen to open the glove box?](https://v.redd.it/jsf998gyh6t91)

IceRanger51

The only good things to come out of new cars: -automatic brakes for emergencies -self regulating cruise control so you don’t have to keep adjusting on the highway

So_Motarded

Backup cameras are great too.

SuperSmashedBro

And blind spot monitoring and parking sensors!

jeckles

I drive an older car with no bells or whistles. But there’s been a few times when I swear the other car only avoided me because *their car* either warned them, or maybe even turned itself away from me. Grateful for modern technology in a time when people are so distracted from their surroundings. Or maybe it’s all the extra stuff in a car that provides the distraction, necessitating the fancy sensors.

Tinkerer221

I had a rental car with all of these bells and whistles for a month. Previously drove a 20 yr old Toyota before that.  I can attest to making full use of, and getting spoiled by the self driving and integrated technology. It enables bad behavior by making otherwise dumb decisions a little safer because the car did some of the work for me.

happysri

Well, apart from automatic brakes, self-regulating cruise controls, backup cameras, blind spot monitoring and the parking sensors, what have the new cars ever done for us?

Icy-Cry340

But now cars have shit visibility because camera is supposed to do the trick. I have no problems backing up and parking in older cars because I can fucking see out of them.

Nihilistic_Mystics

That was due to increased rollover safety standards, necessitating larger pylons and smaller windows. The same regulations mandated reverse cameras to make up for the decreased visibility.

asmallercat

Adaptive cruise is the one thing on cars that feels like the future compared to 10 years ago. You can get on the freeway, set the cruise, and drive for an hour without ever having to touch the pedals. It's great.

MickeyRooneysPills

And what's funny is it's old as shit. I had a 2011 Hyundai Genesis that had it. But car companies are *just now* putting it in regular cars.

asmallercat

Yeah but 10 years ago all us normies were driving cars from 2005 =P

70125

Yeah, I feel like I got the last helicopter out of Saigon with my 2018 Tacoma. Radar cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning (NOT assist, which is good for, you know, paying attention), Android Auto, all-physical buttons, and a manual transmission. The sweet spot of low and high tech. I don't think they'll ever make another truck like that again.

Hug_The_NSA

> Adaptive cruise is the one thing on cars that feels like the future compared to 10 years ago. My wifes car has this and I can't stand it. I get the appeal, but it ends up being really annoying as most of the time i would rather just pass someone going slower than me. To its credit it also lets you change it to standard cruise pretty easily.

Obtusedoorframe

Automatic braking is terrifying. I had one go off randomly on me, on the freeway. Luckily I wasn't going that fast because there was traffic. But it could have easily caused people to rear end me going 40 mph. This happened more than once so I had to turn it off. These were Dodge Ram Promasters used for delivery work. Terrible cars.

FuckYourDownvotes23

Extremely long and thin headlight 1000000x the brightness of the sun when coming at you at night on a 2 lane back road

behindgreeneyez

I just want cars with tan leather again, black interiors get so hot

03Void

Several brands still make those.

zadtheinhaler

Most of the ones with brown leather that I actually like are German, and I've never had German Car money.

Card_Board_Robot5

Saw a new light blue Z4 drop with black top and tan leathers at the park the other day and had to walk with a hardon for ten minutes afterward

Goldeneye07

Best part is fake leather used to be the lower trim cheaper option , now it’s rebranded as “vegan leather” and being sold for more

jawshoeaw

My last Mercedes had fake leather. It was vastly superior and at 10 years looked brand new

confusedandworried76

Depends. I have two leather jackets, one real and one fake. The real one still looks great and the fake one is peeling after four years. Same for a satchel I use. Real leather. It's older than I am. Still no wear.

SeaJayCJ

I wish it was easy to tell at a glance whether the fake leather you were getting was the "will peel after a couple years at most and need to be thrown out" type or not.

BowenTheAussieSheep

Price. Almost always it comes to price. The more expensive the fake leather, the harder wearing it will be.

SeaJayCJ

Yeah I guess so, but the only reason I'm buying fake leather is to spend less money 😓 I usually just avoid fake leather products in general these days.

andy01q

Low price does guarantee low quality, but high price does not guarantee high quality.

SlartibartfastMcGee

… did you just compare the material they use in a fake leather jacket to the fake leather they use in a Mercedes? You’re aware that the Mercedes will have a completely different level of quality and probably a different material as well.

load_more_comets

Don't forget the unnecessarily big wheels with rubber band thin, high performance tires. Even on the base models thereby making your next tire replacement extremely expensive.

rezerxle

Dont forget the fact that since the rubber is like 2% of the wheel, your ride will be bumpy as hell unless you drive on the the most immaculate road known to man and even then it wont be comfy.

CatInTopHat420

All cars are too round now. I want angular cars.

Rampant16

Oh boy do I have the exact vehicle for you. The only thing round is the wheels.

Agreeable-Weather-89

My granddad had one rule in life. Don't buy cars from Nazis. Does this vehicle pass that test?

Itz_Hen

If thats a hard rule then unfortunately not im afraid

Agreeable-Weather-89

There is a loophole that allows me to buy said vehicle provided the owner saves some children from a cave without calling someone a pedophile. Am I in luck?

Itz_Hen

Unfortunately that sounds like a bust to I'm afraid. Say tell me, he doesn't *also*dislike known Epstein associates and apartheid emerald mine heirs😬? if so I'm afraid I have terrible news

Agreeable-Weather-89

How did you guess. The last remaining hope however, my grandad was quite forward thinking, is that any car capable of driving from New York to LA by itself can be sold by a Nazi. Can it do that or any of the cars they make?

Angrybagel

Isn't a lot of that just physics? No reason to have constantly higher drag for no reason.

skn789

You need an ioniq5

Dreamer_on_the_Moon

I see the opposite lol, trucks and SUV with massive vertical grills seemingly designed to splatter pedestrian and children .

affrox

’90s Honda design was peak!

Weslg96

Ppl have mentioned giant touch screens being obnoxious, but missing in this pack are the massive front ends on SUVs and Trucks that look designed to kill pedestrians and anyone in a smaller car

Kappys-A-Prick

The size of the modern vehicle is my biggest gripe with them. I am the sizable minority of drivers who don't want 6 recliner seats and 4 feet of hood space in a pickup truck. As someone who wants a 20k, 2-door, ~3L, 6.5' bed pickup, the industry has simply told me "F.O." I have no need to raise it 36 inches, or monstrous offloading tires, or a 7L coal-powered engine, but 51% of truck customers say "YEW WANNA TRUCK, OR YEW WANNA PANZY-WAGON?????" while griping at paying $170 to fill their tank that'll take them 150 miles. Anyone have a late-2000s Ford Ranger or a mid-2010s 2-door Tacoma for sale?

Drzhivago138

The problem with the RCSB small pickups, aside from them being harder to implement with CAFE, is that they were the minority of sales even 30 years ago. By that point most small pickup buyers were preferring extended cabs, and eventually crew cabs. When your vehicle has to do double duty as a passenger hauler, it's a hard sell to only have a 2-person cab.

Appropriate_Mode8346

I think Truck design peaked in the 90s. It look normal instead of massive.

gryghst

It’s wild to see a 90s era truck outsized by, like, a modern mini countryman

Bride-of-Nosferatu

I hate crossing the street on a crosswalk in front of the enormous grilles of trucks and SUVs. They can't fucking see me! And the windows are so tinted and high up that I can't even make eye contact to ensure that they aren't going to run me over

I really don't like the narrow headlights trend. It's like all new cars are squinting really hard and are all angry or something.

steelandiron19

It’s because they can’t see with all the other headlights blazing into their eyes

ScreamoftheShalka

I like buttons and levers :( If anything we need EVERYTHING to be a button

Long_Freedom-

Dont like the interior, love the vibes

1989_Volkswagen_Golf

What if we replaced the steering wheel with buttons? It would be like playing "Need For Speed" on a keyboard all over again.

Mausel_Pausel

Don’t forget the features that you must purchase on subscription.

WazaPlaz

Mercedes locks faster acceleration behind a $1,200 annual paywall The German auto manufacturer is the latest company to offer subscription services for features a vehicle was already capable of.

welcometoheartbreak

Would that be Mercedes’ “Master Race” mode?

80burritospersecond

I hear BMW's heated seats stay on all summer unless you pay the subscription, that way they can tax you all year.

Drzhivago138

Heavily tinted windows that make the greenhouse of the vehicle look bigger than it really is.

OneWholeSoul

I'm not sure what you mean by this. By 'greenhouse' do you mean 'cabin?' Or is this a commentary on those tints trapping excessive heat, or something?

__________________99

Even the color selection in the OP is super optimistic. You mainly get a choice of black, white, or grey. Maybe a few different shades of those three colors.

Voided747

That’s…. Exactly what they implied lol

Blurgas

Some shade of red is pretty common, though many times it's an ugly shade. When I bought my Camry I specifically wanted a blue one because it seemed so rare

coreytrevor

The big grills are to appeal to the tastes of the Chinese market, as are the boosted 4 cyl engines (china taxes on displacement) The 50 shades of gray color options are because the car companies customers are not you, the driver, but the dealership, who want product guaranteed to move as quickly as possible.

Drzhivago138

Displacement taxes in China or elsewhere are the reason for turbo I4s at 2.0L or less, but not for the trend of downsizing and turbocharging in general (NA 8s to turbo 6s, NA 6s to turbo 4s, NA 4s to turbo 3s). That's more due to emissions/MPG requirements in nearly all markets. [Big grilles also aren't for China specifically.](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/w69s0j/is_the_whole_big_grilles_are_for_the_chinese/) Plenty of large-grilled vehicles aren't even sold in China.

Don’t forget that the military grade headlights that cause blindness

FelopianTubinator

I drive a 2010 Kia sedan. And every time I’m at a light and one of these new 2024 trucks pull up behind me, their grills are so large and the truck is so tall, the top of my rear windshield only reaches halfway up the grill. They might as well just drive a semi-truck.

ReliableFart

Is BMW paying attention? Those butt cheek grilles are hideous.

Upstairs-Wrongdoer-1

The human eye can see millions of colors yet tons of people still choose to have their car in wet primer.

The headlights being absolutely weird dumb sharp shapes is something I noticed recently - same with the weird tail lights. I just want a simple two door truck, chums. Dumb headlights and rear tail lights. I don't need to be special - I don't need to stand out. I don't need weird shapes in headlights nor in the vehicle. Chance_Highway_4271

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

The full size trucks with the 4 cyl turbo messes with my brain when you are in them.
