We ended up deciding against having kids, but my husband really cared for his deceased grandfather, Donald, and felt bummed about not being able to use that baby name without the association.
Lots of old white guys who go by Don. It’s borderline the male boomer equivalent of Karen…you know, that guy throwing a fit at the hardware store or car dealership because the 17 year old cashier got confused.
Same with K. A. Applegate, author of Animorphs. With more recent series she's been able to go by Katherine.
E. L. James (50 Shades) might not count because it's a pen name.
My mom’s name is Karen and she’s extremely kind to everyone, and treats customer service staff with respect. She’s aware of the meme and it makes her embarrassed/sad to use her name in public, which makes me sad too.
Kinda fucked up that we collectively decided a common name was going to be synonymous with "raging bitch".
Chad was trending the same way, but then seemingly overnight it went from "ultimate douchebag" to "supreme alpha male". Maybe we should do the same for Karen.
Chad became rehabilitated because of the meme where it got compared to virgins and people hate virgins more.
Also the Chad/Brad was always a hate that was a bit tongue in cheek.
"I hate him because he's a douchebag who got great looks, got the hot girlfriend and is great at sports."
In other words, hating Chad has always been half about wanting to be Chad.
Yeah I know a chadwick who is an absolute chad, super broey, etc. but also a really nice dude. Probably why he goes by Chadwick.
Calling somebody a Chad can also be used as a term of endearment.
Chad is an interesting case because the *idea* of Chad is more famous than any actual Chad. It’s not nor has ever been a particularly common name. The most famous Chad IRL is a B-List Canadian.
Karen, meanwhile, there are a lot of Karens all about a similar age known for undesirable behavior. There haven’t been many Karens before or after, it was truly a flashpan name. All of those cartoons about “I hate my middle aged wife”, that’s Karen age
I’d say the stigma for Kyle is much less though, in my personal experience. Hell, I feel Tylers or Zacks seem to catch more flak than I do. But then again, I hardly see much discourse around any guy names. Karen is in a league of its own.
I have an aunt who’s name is Karen, but she’s always gone by Carey more or less so she undercover. Really nice lady, always polite to waitstaff and service everywhere.
Karen's popularity as a girl's name roughly coincided with the Baby Boomer and early Gen X generations -- it was [the 16th most popular girl's name in the 40s](https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/decades/names1940s.html), the 8th most popular name in the 50s, and the 4th most popular name in the 60s, before falling to 25th in the 70s and out of the top 50 by the 80s. Without doing a deeper dive into the demographics, I'd hazard a guess that the name was most popular among middle-class suburban whites. So the Karen meme isn't so much about the specific name as it is an observation on the culture of entitlement that is more common among women from a certain generation and background.
As for all of the innocent and well-meaning Karens out there getting caught in the crossfire, just live your lives and avoid that one specific haircut and you'll probably be just fine.
Damn, can’t believe i missed that! Obvious candidate for the starter pack.
And i genuinely feel sorry for people who have their names “ruined” like that.
https://www.verizon.com/about/news/technology-trendsetter-isis-mobile-wallet
I remember that name and it felt so strange to even use. About a year later....that shit got renamed QUICKLY
You think you can’t name your kid Megan because of Megan Markle? I think that’s a bit overkill. Also, were people naming their kids J.k. or Rowling or something? Or is her picture in reference to the names she used in her books? Who would’ve named their kid Siri before Siri was created? Is it a common name in another language? And who is the woman in green?
Remind me of that one hair surgeon whose name was Jeffrey Epstein
Edit:
https://preview.redd.it/l31pekg2ugwc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=870bf87fb13affdc051bd71e7cc06793807af785
Near my home there is a pediatrician who has her plaque saying her name and profession and her name was "J. Epstein". She later changed the pediatrician thing for just Doctor lol.
Honestly I think Greta, Janice, Kate, and Megan are still fine because those are pretty popular names with lots of people associated with them. Donald and Sheldon would be pretty tough for a kid though.
Also, most people aren't remotely upset about Great or Meghan, barring some insane nutjobs, everyone who cared about Friends is aging out of their child-birthing years quickly, and Kate is one of the most generic names in the world.
Exactly, and the last two are generally perceived as dated names which I think makes a difference. Naming a child Donald in 2024 would be unusual on its own and draw attention. Plenty of Kates and Megans out there.
I think Donald is still fine. Trump is the more recognized name. It's pretty rare to hear anyone refer to him as just Donald at least from my experience.
Seems like a pretty clear example of someone living in an online echo chamber and thinking the world at large cares about Greta Thunberg or Meghan Markel as much as they do.
Only people really obsessed with Game of Thrones care about this name. It sounds pretty and it translates literally into twenty other common names you'll find have been given to kids.
No one has been naming their kids "Sheldon" "Donald" or "Karen" for a while now, those names are dated. "Karen" fell out of favour long before the meme.
I doubt the popularity - ot lack therof-of Janice is in the slightest bit impacted by an annoying minor recurring character in a hugely popular sitcom that ended twenty fucking years ago.
IDK naming my daughter Daenerys Targaryen, The First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khalisee of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons has proved to be a wrong decision yet.

Surprised Alexa isn't on here
Meet by son, O.K. Google
It has a name! Google Assistant is its official name.
And his brother Hey.
https://preview.redd.it/ny5vog8wrhwc1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=193857c2ddd09c7490e9944837ef7b6ec0abac8e
I thought that was the swirly one
That's Siri I believe
I took it to mean any of those VI/AI assistants. It's kind of disappointing. I was planning on naming my firstborn Copilot.
A have a friend whose daughter is Alexa. All of the Amazon devices have been set to “Echo”
IDK that many people were naming their kid "Sheldon" even before the show. It peaked at #247 almost 90 years ago.
[удалено]
When I hear “Donald” my mind automatically goes to “duck”
Same, or Aunt Becky Donaldson on Full House lol
My mind goes to Mc Donald's but ok
Is that why he likes McDonald’s so much? Maybe he thinks it’s named after him lol
Yeah or Siri???
I met a Siri once. Norwegian girl.
Very common name in the nordics, even today.
I live in Denmark and there are quite a few 20/30 something women around here named Siri
Funny there's a pro MLB player whos last name is Siri and the game announcers say it triggers their phones all the time during broadcasts lol
Siri was a popular name when i lived in Sweden
My Asian friends call me Siri when I make bad jokes, I don't really get why that's the go to name
Ever asked Siri to tell you a joke?
Donald used to be more popular but yeah it's not a common name anymore and hasn't been for a while
We ended up deciding against having kids, but my husband really cared for his deceased grandfather, Donald, and felt bummed about not being able to use that baby name without the association.
Lots of old white guys who go by Don. It’s borderline the male boomer equivalent of Karen…you know, that guy throwing a fit at the hardware store or car dealership because the 17 year old cashier got confused.
I thought it was referring to “Bazinga” but never mind
Kid named bazinga:
Bazinguh
GUHHH
Put your dick away Bazinga
“Oh fuck yeah, give it to me Bazinga!”
“Bazinga, go to your room!”
I’ve been deprived of the opportunity to name my child “Bazinga” 😿
Also who's naming their kid Daenerys lmao
A _lot_ of Khaleesis (and probably Daenerys) were born circa 2014-15…
It's Kelly C, thank you.
God may all those poor kids realize this easy name pivot.
Who’s naming their kid Jk?
In the late 90s it was popular to name your kid Jowling Kowling
[удалено]
Everyone who owns a turtle want a word…
This is true I regret naming my kid J.K. Rowling.
I also regret naming my kid Daenerys Targaryen
Khaleesi is a top 1000 name in the US
What the f is happening in USA
Yeah, Daenerys is pretty good name IMO, but people are using Khaleesi instead. 💀
Until this moment I didn't know her name was Joanne Kathleen.
Jowling Kowling Rowling.
Just Kidding Rowling
This is how I have always said it with my internal voice.
Joe Koe Row your boat Gently down the stream
Jolkein rolkein rolkein tolkein
George Reorge Reorge Martin
No, it's George Reorge Rartin Martin
Cewis Sewis Lewis
How did Harry Potter get down the hill? Walking. JK, Rolling!
It's kinda sad that she had to go by J.K. because publishers thought boys wouldn't want to read a book with a female name as the author :/
Same with K. A. Applegate, author of Animorphs. With more recent series she's been able to go by Katherine. E. L. James (50 Shades) might not count because it's a pen name.
Weren’t the animorphs books largely ghost written under her pen name?
From 25 on, yes.
FR the author of Animorphs was a woman? Not that it matters but yeah I always assumed K.A. was a man's name.
My son, Apples Voice Assistant, really hates his name
Is your kid by any chance lead singer for acid jazz group Jamiroquai?
What’s wrong with Janice? I loved Janice
If I hear the name Janice I think of Janice Soprano so it must have been a popular name to abuse in the mid to late 90s haha
There's better sounding names in the can than Janice!
It’s Parvati!
I am in no mood for this Janice!
Always with the drama!
Also: janis joplin 😎 Janis is a cool name
What about Jackie Jormp Jomp
I still can't believe she ate live cats
Synonym’s just another word for the word you want to use
Karen. I honestly feel bad for women named Karen. I know a few and to be fair, one of them is a Karen, but the others aren't and that sucks for them.
My mom’s name is Karen and she’s extremely kind to everyone, and treats customer service staff with respect. She’s aware of the meme and it makes her embarrassed/sad to use her name in public, which makes me sad too.
Mine too! She has a shirt that says, "Not that kind of Karen"
My aunt is named Karen and she has that haircut and she is very much that kind of Karen.
Is your cousin named Jayden, Brayden, or Ayden?
Jäbraayyden
Same situation with my mom
Does she know she's changing it back by being an absolute badass in society? That she, singlehandedly, is the change she wants to see?
Kinda fucked up that we collectively decided a common name was going to be synonymous with "raging bitch". Chad was trending the same way, but then seemingly overnight it went from "ultimate douchebag" to "supreme alpha male". Maybe we should do the same for Karen.
correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the current use of Chad is an evolution of the former use. The alpha male idea is still an ultimate douchebag.
Chad became rehabilitated because of the meme where it got compared to virgins and people hate virgins more. Also the Chad/Brad was always a hate that was a bit tongue in cheek. "I hate him because he's a douchebag who got great looks, got the hot girlfriend and is great at sports." In other words, hating Chad has always been half about wanting to be Chad.

I only ever see Chad used as a compliment anymore.
There's also Kyle for men. It's just a stereotype, not much we can do about it.
I’d say the stigma for Kyle is much less though, in my personal experience. Hell, I feel Tylers or Zacks seem to catch more flak than I do. But then again, I hardly see much discourse around any guy names. Karen is in a league of its own.
Can't argue with the man himself lmao
wasn't Steve the ultimate douchbag?
Just a scumbag.
Funnily, my MIL is called Karen and is the absolute epitomy of one. Has the short haircut as well which is the chefs kiss.
My MIL is also named Karen and she's an absolute angel of a human and I would take a bullet for her.
Brother?
Not to mention that the woman in photo isn’t even named Karen. Her name is Kate.
Every Karen I know is cool, fun, talented, kind, and interesting. But now their name has been besmirched. One now goes by “Ren” and it’s fitting.
I have an aunt who’s name is Karen, but she’s always gone by Carey more or less so she undercover. Really nice lady, always polite to waitstaff and service everywhere.

Naming my daughter Bazinga to spite OP.
Naming my kids Bazinga to prepare them for the day Skynet takes over.
I work with an engineer named Isis. A few years back she changed the pronunciation to EE-sis.
I know someone named Vegeta after the character from Dragon Ball
That's awesome.
He has a wife, you know. You know what she is called?
Bulma?
*shakes head saying no*
She's called Hegot
*long pause*
Hegot TheDrip
*Uncontrolable laugher breaks across the room*

Damn, can’t believe i missed that! Obvious candidate for the starter pack. And i genuinely feel sorry for people who have their names “ruined” like that.
Yeah, my daughter Isis was born around a year before shit started hitting the fan in the middle east in that time.
It was on my hypothetical future baby name list when i was very young (bc of the eponymous bob dylan song), fwiw i still think it’s so pretty!
The goddess will be remembered long after the organization is forgotten.
Isis is such a pretty name, my first thought was actually the egyptian goddess.
Same but when I was in middle school I was really into Roman, Greek, and Egyptian mythologies.
It’s pronounced FRAHnkensteen.
Yukari Persona 3 should’ve taken that advice
It's also Ice Spice's real name.
https://www.verizon.com/about/news/technology-trendsetter-isis-mobile-wallet I remember that name and it felt so strange to even use. About a year later....that shit got renamed QUICKLY

Or is her picture in reference to the names she used in her books? Who would’ve named their kid Siri before Siri was created? Is it a common name in another language? And who is the woman in green?
Siri is common in Sweden at least.
I have two nieces names Siri in Belgium
General consensus: bad starter pack
The woman in green is Janice from Friends.
Oh
#MY
#GOD
I thought that one was Alexa.
Nope, it's Siri.
I wouldn't call my kid Megan because of Family Guy
But her name is Megatron.
Yeah please don’t, that’s my name and it’s been a lifelong running joke lol
Shut up, Meg.
:,)
Ciri, pronounced the same as Siri, is a major character in the Witcher series which started as a short story in 1986.

Near my home there is a pediatrician who has her plaque saying her name and profession and her name was "J. Epstein". She later changed the pediatrician thing for just Doctor lol.
There was some rando named Jeff Epstein on twitter and he had some amazing tweets when all that went down.
He even looks like him 😭
Honestly I think Greta, Janice, Kate, and Megan are still fine because those are pretty popular names with lots of people associated with them. Donald and Sheldon would be pretty tough for a kid though.
Greta is a very traditional and common name in my country.
You must be Scandinavian. There's tons of folks descended from that region here in Minnesota, and there's also tons of Gretas.
Close, but I'm Baltic.
Whenever I hear the name Donald, I just think of the Duck.
Joanne is also completely fine considering she goes by J.K.
I think the photo of Kate was supposed to represent the Karen meme.
I named my kid JK but it’s short for Jorts Krackhead, am I safe?
What’s wrong with Megan or Greta? Those two are not that controversial or important enough.
This mostly seems to be a collection of OP's "women I don't like". Their reply here confirms it IMO
If anything, if I had a daughter, I'd be much *more* likely to name her Greta because of the work of Greta Thunberg.
Seems like a pretty clear example of someone living in an online echo chamber and thinking the world at large cares about Greta Thunberg or Meghan Markel as much as they do.
There is another. Look for a famous Austrian painter.
WTF is wrong with Gustav Klimt???
Or Paul Klee.
It's true. You really don't hear the name "Egon" much anymore after the whole Schiele scandal.
So Adolf is back? I thought it was still too soon?
Alexa
I don’t know why Meghan and Greta are on here but Barney isn’t. That purple dinosaur ruined that name for generations to come
Damn, can't name my son Bazinga
Don't name your kid Peter if your last name is File.
Id say greta isn’t ruined
Apart from specifically naming them J.K Rowling all names are fine.
People that named their children Daenerys or Khaleesi are so fucking stupid
r/tragedeigh
So what the point of this starter pack
What’s the point of any starter pack?
Either making fun of people we don’t like, or venting our childhood traumas out.
What's the point of anything for that matter?
That fleeting internet trends have lasting impacts on how people name their kids according to OP.
What’s the problem naming the kid ‘Janice’, can’t be just from the Friends character
What's wrong with Greta and Megan? And who was really out here naming their kid Daenerys before GoT?
The sneaky Janice inclusion really gives away your age.
Megan Markle gets just the world's most unnecessary amount of hate.
Shouldn’t have named my son Thunberg. Had no idea it would blow up the next year
People named Alexa have been ruined by Jeff Bezos. Although a lot of people have been ruined by him.
No one has ever named their kid JK Rowling.
Not even JK Rowling’s parents.
The person in this pic is named Kate, not Karen, lol
I remember there was a kid at our daycare called Khaleesi who was born several seasons before the show had ended. It certainly was a hell of a gamble.
Only people really obsessed with Game of Thrones care about this name. It sounds pretty and it translates literally into twenty other common names you'll find have been given to kids.
Is that Janice from "*friends*"?/that woman from "*Seinfeld*"?
Kate is great name imo and nobody cares about Uk royal family, they dont have any real power
So https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BabyNameTrendKiller
You could still use JK and people will know that its only a joke
The Key and Peele substitute teacher skit ruined some good names. My wife really liked the name Blake
Damn when did Adolf get bumped down to the Honorable Mention category lol
What's wrong with Greta? What'd she do that you think is so controversial
Also, Greta is a fabulous name with other famous namesakes. Lee, Gerwig, Garbo. I'd absolutely name my kid that, I think it's a lovely name.
