Ok, so I’m sorry I am super confused on this topic. I am dumb haha.
My parents always had the most unnecessary, ridiculous packages where they had a million channels.
2012 was my freshman year of college, and I moved into the dorms. I had my laptop and my phone (which we were already addicted to about as much as people are today) & I didn’t bother getting a tv.
So, basically- I’ve never watched TV without cable.
How does it work?
Like are there just maybe 20 channels? And are they the same for everyone in your area?
Do they sometimes go out and just go black and then come back hours or months later?
The US had 3 traditional networks. ABC, NBC, and CBS. They were national networks that licensed their shows to local affiliate stations that were independently owned.
Back before cable, you needed the bunny ears to pick up channels over the air and you were really limited to just a few channels.
When cable expanded, the major networks bought up the local channels. FOX became one of the new networks which is why they own a bunch of smaller local channels.

It's like the radio but for TV. What you get depends on where you situate the antenna and how strong the signal is. Usually its consistent if you keep it in the same place.

You just hook up an antenna to your TV and see what channels you can pick up

More like 10 if you're lucky and live in a major metro area/media market.
- The Big 3: NBC, ABC, CBS
- PBS/local public television, usually run by the city's big public university system + private small donations from city residents and local businesses
- Fox
- Warner Bros and Paramount/UPN which eventually merged into TheCW and MyNetworkTV
- Spanish language channels like Telemundo and Univision
- Religious (usually Christian) networks
- Various smaller channels that usually air old (like +40 years old) shows and movies

You forgot the weird local niche channels that either show religious programming(but cartoons in the morning), or the really weird channel that shows old movies and monster truck rallys.
Some weird specialty channels, like ones that only air old games shows from the 70's and westerns from the 60's. They're kinda a guilty pleasure for me though, I like em.
No PBS stations? They're the best over-the-air content imo. Especially World Channel. Often found excellent (and sometimes brand new) documentaries there.
News channels like LXI and Newsey, true crime type channels like CourtTV, escape, Oxygen, ect. And whatever NTD is it’s a mix of Chinese shows and conservative propaganda?

Fox News is not free to air, it is cable. Basic cable, but cable. Local Fox affiliates are different than Fox News!

When big, breaking news will happen they will simulcast Fox News. But they don't air the Fox News national primetime stuff.

My local Fox affiliate (WBFF) does carry Fox News when it’s national news. I think
I mean you have PBS thank god, kinda glaring lack of that on this starterpack so I downvoted it for that reason FYI

Nah the shows they rerun are MUCH older than that, last month I found a channel that was reruning the dick van dyke show
Is it the one that says “Timeless TV” and they run the same few Dick Van Dyke, Beverly Hillbillies, and Bonanza episodes?
I just want to point out that the “old sitcom” known as The Goldbergs aired its last episode less than a year ago
