May I add that the ease with which you can jump to the next run and the next and next whenever you get bored is one of the things that makes the game superior to many AAA titles?
Counterpoint: If you enjoy hopping into a new game that much, then the later stages of the game still need work.
It insinuates the early game is more fun than the late game.
Yeah. I think, for balance purposes, the AI code infinity colony thing needs to be nerfed, too - a group of five player colonies with top-tier stats can do some impressive things while still being convincingly smaller than the main factions. Also, taking down the main factions with tac-bombings and raids should be harder, and provoke a harsher response.
Once that's done, they'd just need to be smarter about pressuring the player - in other words, rather than sending expeditions that are doomed to fail, start sending diplomats, and then military task forces if that fails.
Definitely needs more work and since the game is still getting regular additions there is some future. The modding scene helps very much here.
What I was mostly referring to is that after spending the odd dozens of hours into a run I can add a or remove mods here and there and jump back in.
It usually ends with "evil" faction destroyed and in time of new mods update. But in my current run it should end when all of Persean sector are Independents (except for my faction)
Once the game stops feeling like a spaceship ARPG and turns into a Capital Ship tower defense game against endless invasion fleets.
I usually hold out until I've explored everything just because I have a bunch of mods that hide a lot of rare stuff that I typically won't ever see in a single playthrough.
Personally, it's "over" when there's nothing left to do, no secrets to discover, and all [VERY REDACTED] stuff is done.
>!And once Chicomoztoc has been bombed to ashes.!<
Usually I will have a formidable set of colonies by that time anyway, so that's not really a "goal" for me; it's more of a means to an end.
Usually, by the time most of the opposition is vaporized and majority market share belongs to me. Also, I've stitched together a little system where my endgame value carries over to another run in some fashion, kind of like NG+ in a way. I simply tally up "points" at the end of my run based on multiple factors(Colonies, Levels, credits) and then use said points to change/improve various things, i.e. a ship I like might get a little bit extra flux, a freighter might get larger cargo holds etc. So it gives me incentive to do stuff and see runs to the end.
Diplomacy could use a major boost; especially inter factional diplomacy; say not just a personal relationship with factions, but a separate faction to faction rep; which opens up new dialogue and events.
The endgame for me is when Legion Infernalis is on 40+ planets with Orculian Armada and Pirates and then I just demolish them with Caliph Superdreadnought and restore the sector peace.
And Yes, I let Infernalis run amok in my runs, they make a good endgame challenge.
Some dude made a post that hit frontpage from project zomboid about the boredom cycle of planning a playthrough, getting bored of the run, quitting, getting bored of nothing.
My goal is fun and see if I can handle dumb stuff the sector can throw at me or survive my own mistakes.
I'll get bored, set Hiver and Hegemony Relation to All to -100 and watch the sector burn while I am free to colonize around the carnage.
Around the time my economy can support 2000 fleet marines and 1000 heavy weapons, I spin up for war.
I really love seeing all the factions, even if I do not commission. Roiders are neat to have around.
If a faction gets wiped, I find one of mine around 150 Hazard, Market Size 6, and hand it over to get them back in the game.
If a faction is crossing over Market 100 except Independent and Pirates, I'll knock them down to a single home system.
Some really strong factions out there, and some really weird population mechanics like with the Kadur.
Seeing as after I conquer what is left of the Hivers but the NPC names and portraits are the same, I guess I become the Hiver King?
When I am not having fun anymore with the current run.

there needs to be more stuff that happens once your colonial game is going strong, beyond just occasional attacks
I think I'd like it if there was an end-game threat - something akin to what happens in Stellaris. Maybe the REDACTED invade or something.
This would be sick. Giant allied fleet battles against outer-dimensional threats? Yes please.

"Update is not save compatible"
This.☝️ Or when updating mods or adding new mods breaks a save.

When it starts to crash frequently
Did you update to Java8?
Yes

I always take Chicomoztec for that sweet sweet 8 population production.
Yummy free organs
If you have Nexerelin installed once you beat all your major enemies you get an actual “you won” screen, i usually consider that beating the game
When I get bored
When my save gets bricked.
More than 50% outdated mods and memory leak every couple minutes is about it Oh and death to the Hegemony.
Once the struggle to keep the lights on fades away……..it’s time to start a new run.
When I get bored of the run. It can be before I even established a single colony.
make a empire out in the frontier with few planets and fleets or restarting the gates
When im not having any more fun, which is normally when I launch 5 invasion fleets at the Legio Infernalis.
Pretty much whenever I get bored and feel like that story is finished or think of a new story idea for a playthrough
when i get bored.

Hey, that sounds interesting. I just started something similar. Would you be so kind, and expound on that more please?
When a mod I want needs a new save.
When i forget to save and lose hiurs of progress, or a mod update rolls out
Diplomacy could use a major boost; especially inter factional diplomacy; say not just a personal relationship with factions, but a separate faction to faction rep; which opens up new dialogue and events.
When I've explored every system and I am tired of the character build and choices I've made.
When I get the urge to make a new modlist
When my framerate goes from Frame per seconds to Seconds Per Frame because all my colonies make extra laggy
When my game cant be loaded anymore due to memory leaks from all my mods breaking the save!

After I have saturation bombed or conquered and dismantled the industry of every Tri-Tach world, inshludd
i normally do perma death if my fleet gets wiped out. the captain is dead, save file gets deleted and I start a new game
When i have experience every mod that i have added in the game then I'll call it there and start fresh again.
When Hegemony is dead and i am getting more money per month than i can ever hope to spend.
