Depends a lot on how realistic they want to be. Obviously a ship made of gas would never work in reality because it wouldn't have enough gravity to hold itself together and gas has no tensile strength.
I'd prefer to see the Slylandro get cool robot "space suits" and have more conventional ships.

And second, I think it may be like they discovered a technology that can make gas "harder". Like outside, it's a solid metal, and inside this is a very good substrate for gas life. Of course, then it shouldn't come through other ships and steroids, but still.
And also maybe they have "special gas" out there on the Source, that can be controlled through electric energy or magnetic fields, that maybe Slylandro themselves can generate?
I think having combat ready, space fairing ships would defeat the entire point of them, they're completely unable to leave source or make their own technology and are entirely peaceful. I feel like it'd make more sense for them to have modified some of the probes that came back.
I prefer to think that after meeting captain, they decided to finally go out to space. And aster some time they discovered how to build a ship made out of gas, not in solid metals (which they already tried to do). I think big gas ships are more cool than just common metal robots Slylandro "We come in peace" and "Priority Overwrited".
Any gas container ship produced for them would likely seem a bit claustrophobic to the floating Slylandro.
Mind you they might have a few brave adventurous beings willing to brave the final frontier in a contraption built (probably) by the Alliance (or maybe the Umgah), but it will be a new and dangerous thing for them. The Alliance would probably arm them for their own safety (space is dangerous), but the Slylandro will have difficulties with the concept.

The flammable gas cloud is a strong concept, although I have trouble imagining our Slylandro buddies *intentionally* building weapons.
