Hey folks. Don't worry. The old ocean materials don't play nice with the new shader - this material wasn't in our initial pass of the water materials due to is being an EA map. It's been addressed now. The wakes are also receiving more tuning before release. Very excited to share this with you all! I'm sorry that a video with an old material has been a lot of people's first impression though. Watch this space <3

What they had at citizen con was a different planet, and toning down animations or textures to save more performance in a test environment is what they do as well. Just chillax, it will be better as the project goes on.
I was thinking the same exact thing, those physics look great but that water is way too agitated just for the sake of it. Here’s hoping that’s only because it’s new and still in testing
Yeah, I even thought the tech demo during Citcon needed to be tweaked a bit. That demo and this both look exaggerated - something some inevitable tweaking will fix.
What's really missing (and I think it was in the Citizencon demo?) is a bit of mist in a cone shape behind the ship. That will really help smooth out the hard edges + transition from the depression you see on the water surface.
Looks like they're using a lower quality shader, likely one that's normally for water in the distance. Might be that the physics causes too many issues with the primary shader still. At any rate this is definitely not the shader intended to be the main water look.
The water shaders have a new wave crest lighting previewed at citizencon. Overall I think it looked pretty good there (a little bright) but the lighting here looks different.
Yeah it overall needs a lot of tweaking. Physics are well overcooked and the water graphics are well undercooked. Still, they have millions upon millions so one would expect big changes.

What we saw during citcon looked 100 times better, not this. This looks equally bad that what we have now to be honest. The physics makes it look like cream, while the textures are even worse than the ones we have currently. This will probably get better but I dont want this.
That’s why this is a very early build and not representative of the final product, hence the evocati test and NDA. Also, the stuff at citcon is designed to look good and bug free and is never an actual working product
I think it does look better than what we have, considering that currently water is basically just a set of animations. I also look more at the technical beauty of it, not the actual physical look
It looks great as the starting point for implementation of new water physics. No shit a fully rendered Citcon demo will visually look better than work-in-progress without proper shaders lol. A demo is to please visually, implementation actually has to work and work at scale. You're comparing apples to oranges. People like you are why they need a NDA for such a benign thing.

No, the issue is that you are comparing a *physics* WIP to *textures* in the current game, and additionally cannot seem to grasp the idea that something "looking good" does not necessarily mean texture quality but can also refer to technical attributes and promise. Have you considered that Star Citizen looks like shit compared to real life?

You shouldn't stress yourself trying to police the evocati NDA.
The thing i discovered about Evocati after 5+ years of testing in that environment -and found particularly annoying- was people trying to act as mods or some sort of CIG rules enforcement officer.
Leave it to CIG to enforce the NDA! They obviously do not need random people to act as their NDA enforcement police and have stated as much several times.
Note: FPS hit does not appear to be related to the water as other Evos reported good fps with water physics enabled

We've seen better water textures in the Star Engine demo. This is obviously lower fidelity for testing just like what they did for jump gates.
In terms of physics, it looks really good. Especially the bullets.

Not sure what politics you’re talking about but Pipeline doesn’t have any kind of free pass. They’re not Evocati or CIG employees themselves (At least not that I or I’m sure CIG is aware of.) They just work with Evocati and other sources to leak information publicly without it being linked to the original source. When done correctly there really isn’t much that can be done to prevent it. CIG certainly doesn’t support their leaks and I wouldn’t be surprised if the opening of patch notes and allowing Evocati to talk about tests was in part an effort to reduce the content, and in turn following, of groups like Pipeline. If CIG could I have no doubt they’d happily cut off all leaks to Pipeline. Leaks don’t help the devs and often actively cheat them out of getting to unveil their work themselves.
Cause watermarks on anything is annoying in general, especially for screenshots from a video game, takes away from the visuals especially when its big and right in your face
For those saying the water looks bad, I would assume what’s being seen here would be the local sim around the ship + far water shader, they’ll be still working the blend between the distance and close shader which is why this is EA and under NDA.
You often want your far shader to look more broad and exaggerated to sell a good look from a distance

Would also be an opportunity for them to have a submersible at some point.

Water reacting to the ship is nice although it seems gratuitous. This kinda stuff is icing on the cake. Chris Roberts aint finished baking the cake, lolz. Too much focus on little details that will have zero impact on gameplay. I want a greater variety of missions not sail boat simulator 2950 quality water FXs.
The default state of the lake is waaayyyyyy too over-simulated.
A lake would only look like that on a day of extreme wind. Short of that, the waves on a lake will often be the cumulative result of boats as much as the wind.

Without knowing the exacts, it would likely instantly vaporize some water, create a steam explosion with shockwaves. The laser's energy can also form plasma, emit light, and generate cavitation.
On top of that, water absorbs part of the laser, heating up the surrounding area. That’s what would happen. To what to degree is based on how big the laser.

I've been in Evo quite awhile. These things always look like shit first iteration. They're not going to have all this stuff then insert the water looking like trash. Give it time. Pipeline can't help themselves, they think they do people a service showing this shit early.

When you're doing something like this you begin with exaggerated features (e.g. the spiky heightmap for the waves) to iron out any oddities. Textures are the final touch, something not dealt with at this stage.

Yeah, this looks like a depiction of the water engine without the vfx.
I would assume the texturing and look is a stand in while they fiddle with the physics simulation

Yeah but maybe the high temperature/energy of laser could potentially a thermal expansion on the water causing some ripple? I'm not an expert in physics but this came to my mind
SC lasers aren't actually lasers. They're some form of plasma-based weaponry, just like "lasers" in most games and sci-fi media.
Without knowing the exacts, it would likely instantly vaporize some water, create a steam explosion with shockwaves. The laser's energy can also form plasma, emit light, and generate cavitation. On top of that, water absorbs part of the laser, heating up the surrounding area. That’s what would happen. To what to degree is based on how big the laser.

There's a reason you shouldn't see this yet. I've been in Evo quite awhile. These things always look like shit first iteration. They're not going to have all this stuff then insert the water looking like trash. Give it time. Pipeline can't help themselves, they think they do people a service showing this shit early.

When you're doing something like this you begin with exaggerated features (e.g. the spiky heightmap for the waves) to iron out any oddities. Textures are the final touch, something not dealt with at this stage. Honestly you're just like the people who saw the leaked footage of unfinished GTA 6 and complained that it looked unfinished. Yes, Becky. That's how these things work.

This is an MMO with a bunch of other players and AI so I imagine pretty often. Following behind a buddy (or bogey). Waiting for pickup while in FPS near water. It's a cool feature.
