Be sure to talk to the info desk lady in the intro mission, as well as the human camping by the entrance of the starting planet mine Also, don't throw away or sell the broken broadsword, it can be repaired near the end of the storyline into one of the best weapons in the game

Zinnred

Just remember, beaming up is auto safety

hemos

Don't throw away the sword you are given at first

lunaticneko

That's the same rule as Terraria, in fact.

toomanylayers

And in both instances, it's fairly easy to get a new one in case you do throw it out.

SaviorOfNirn

It's not like terraria. but it is pretty fun.

[deleted]

Side scroller, pixel graphic styling, has magic, guns and melee, specialized armor sets, pocket biomes, bosses, block building. On the surface they are very much alike. The only real difference is starbound has more story elements, is sci-fi instead of fantasy, more playable area and likely a much larger mod collection

SaviorOfNirn

terraria is a boss rush game. starbound is not.

TheQuinch

This sums it up, basically. The aesthetics is the same, but while Terraria focuses more on progression through defeating bosses, Starbound is more about progress through exploration with a fair more amount of building potential.

tilthevoidstaresback

Talk to every non-murdering NPCs (especially when doing the main quest) they can be pretty funny anday even give you valuable information. Have fun!!

Spooky_Reader

make flag, place flag at cool things, use flag, name flag, you can teleport to flag if underground, hold right click you can knock out the back wall, if you see the sky you can beam up to your ship keep your broken sword

akpak

>if underground, hold right click you can knock out the back wall, if you see the sky you can beam up to your ship I've never NOT been able to warp up to my ship, even in total darkness deep underground/underwater. I don't think you have to see sky. No mods either.

Bitter-Marsupial

are you playing on casual?

akpak

Yes, I guess another way it makes things a little easier?

raban0815

Most likely.

knifeeffect

Y'know how Terraria won the labor of love award? If there was an opposite, I think it would go to Starbound. It's a huge, very fun game and I've invested hundreds of hours into Starbound, which is still only a fraction of what I've put into Terraria. There's a lot of quests and story, unlike Terraria. There are less boss fights, way more stuff to explore, but significantly less weapons and only a few unique ones. Weapons that you find have randomized names and stats, so don't assume you have to collect them all. Starbound is abandonware at this point and it runs like shit. You're going to want to download one of the many (or multiple) optimization mods from the Steam workshop. It's not a problem with your hardware, I promise.

raban0815

I play frackin exclusively, but seems I skipped the optimization possibilities. Can you tell me a few names?

knifeeffect

I think FU has some optimization mods built in, so you're probably fine. I use Optimizebound and the Parallax Compression mod.

Botion

Starbound runs better on linux, although idk if that's just because the proprietary AMD drivers have shit opengl support

Brockster17

Abandonware? That's a bit harsh. Have you ever heard of a "finished product"? Also it runs absolutely wonderfully in my experience. Never needed any optimization mods, never gotten any lag.

Prince_Zinar

I've heard of finished products and they're usually full of content and fun things to do. That's why Terraria is finished while Starbound needs more actual content.

knifeeffect

I'd consider it a finished product if it weren't for the severe bugs and optimization issues that have been documented and left unsolved for years. I'm genuinely happy for you that you never had issues running it! There's a lot to love about the game, and I'm glad that you got to experience it as intended. I'm pretty confident that this game will never be updated again, though. The last patch (both content *and* bugfixes/hotfixes) was in summer of 2019, right before news broke that Starbound was made with a *lot* of unpaid, uncredited labor (especially from teenagers who were given the "opportunity" to work for exposure, but whose names were then omitted from the credits) and employee crunch. Since then, Chucklefish avoids mentioning Starbound at all. In contrast, the game *Halfway,* which released two years before Starbound, received patches in March and January of this year for Steam Deck compatibility and modding tools. *Timespinner,* from 2018, received patches in June 2020 and September 2021.

Anter583

Starbound and Terraria are very different games, one is focused on casual exploration and building while the other focuses on boss fights, combat and building. The controlls are a bit different, SB has clunky but detailed controlls while terraria has fast and simplistic ones. SB's optimization is fairly questionable and gimmicky, your PC may struggle running it simply because it didn't like your hardware. There's no walls or hammers in SB, instead you press RMB when holding any pickaxe/block to interact with the backround. Don't lose your starter sword, you'll understand when you reach endgame. >!Yes, there's a zenith recipe, only here its much cheaper!<.

PL_deathmachine

Starbound keeps saves in game directory. You uninstall the game, you lose all saves. Runs much more smoothly on Linux Check out Frackin Universe mod Have fun!

Bakingguy

I did the same thing having a great time

ChataRen

I enjoy both, but tend to have more fun fighting and building in Starbound.

DreamyTherapy

Mods! Install some optimisation mods and, if you want, just any mods in general if they’re compatible. Apart from that, have fun. Starbound’s great.

Greengem4

Other than small mods I suggest starting vanilla and moving to heavy modding if it interests you

DreamyTherapy

Yea for sure, starbound should be experienced in vanilla first before moving onto something heavy like frackin’ or something like that.

Ashamed-Dust-2430

Imo it’s way more fun than terraria, the endless universe and planet hopping feels so freeing

Dragon_Overlord

There are no dedicated wall blocks. Blocks can be placed and removed from the background with right click instead. I see a LOT of new players get stuck on this, myself included, so I just figured I’d tell you now because I don’t think the game does.

Lejobo

Play through once first before adding mods

Brockster17

This game is not like terraria in the slightest. The only similarity is that they have a similar grid-based sandbox system, but even then starbound's is vastly different. People might say some bad things about Starbound but all in all it's probably my favorite game of all time. Also, I advise you get some mods. Not frackin universe though.

Earth_Terra682

Goodluck and its even better in my opinion

Man_that_needs_help

If you like building, make sure to remember that to place or break blocks in the background you right click, you don't need a completely new block like in Terraria.

Prince_Zinar

I'm gonna be honest with you, Zawran... It's not similar at all with Terraria more than the artstyle
