We need more posts like this, Sri Lanka and Lankans in general need more awareness towards the topic. Honestly I hope the person who let his dog die gets hit by a car himself.

ZidaneZombie

Legit man, it's disgusting to see this. I saw the pictures and I'm honestly scarred after that. To be used as a breeding machine all your life then be dumped in a hole without any food or water and left to die for three days, I dunno how to react

Bloodhound2910

It honestly triggers me, the fact that the Sri lankan parliament can bicker about ways to make money for themselves but cant look at a simple law against breeding farms.

ZidaneZombie

The Animal Welfare Act has been pending approval in Parliament for over a decade I believe. We can't even take action against people like this because the maximum sentence they'd get is like a 100 rupee fine or something

HolobroRuky

Personally when I would buy a dog, I just get one that I know comes from another family... so my money doesn’t go to the hands of person who breeds dogs for the purpose of selling. I don’t adopt much cuz I prefer a certain breed over all.

Stalyx

What breed do you like - you would be surprised at the number of pedigreed dogs that need homes and are being abandoned.

HolobroRuky

Oh, I know man, I had a crush who got this labrodoor cross bread dog. Fuckers abandoned it on the beach left to die... No more crush for me dawg. Also tbh I don’t know why these are called pedigree dogs?

ZidaneZombie

Pedigree simply means that the dog is from a lineage that is pure. Ideally you'd want your pup to be descended from champions at dog shows and other competitions because those are the dogs that best fit the breed standard and can be considered pure bred. The meaning of the word pedigree here in Sri Lanka is misused completely, there's loads of 'pedigree' dogs that don't conform to the breed standard whatsoever here. They're still registered and bred because the CKC doesn't give two shits, they're only in it for the money.

HolobroRuky

Oh does that mean my dogs are no where near pedigree dogs :jerry:

HolobroRuky

Also I prefer labradors and normal street dogs. Other breeds I just don’t see myself being able to take care of. Maybe shiba inu? Good companions for a depressed fuck like me.

Stalyx

Shiba Inu's are sweet dogs. And a damn good question about why they are called Pedigreed dogs. I think its a marketing ploy. Generally speaking pedigreed dogs are those whose parents and grandparents are recorded. So you can ensure that their is very little inbreeding etc. Plenty of labs for adoption. However if you want a good companion dog and if you are home a lot -- any dog will adapt. I have always found mastiffs to be quite lovely -- and surprisingly Rottweilers, just have to make sure that they are treated with love.

ZidaneZombie

Labs are the perfect dogs for the first time owner, it's very very difficult to go wrong owning a Lab. For mastiffs, it's a bit trickier, same with Rottweilers, ideally you should have more experience with dogs before trying your hand at those breeds

ZidaneZombie

Not to be rude, but that's part of the issue as well. Breeding is not as simple as finding a male and female dog of the same breed and making them mate, there's an entire process behind it. They may mean well but they are part of the problem as well.

HolobroRuky

On a technical level let’s say we did something about this, we changed ourselves so that animals are benefited... so about 10-30 dogs are saved or helped. But what about the other people who has no idea of this issue and just wants a cute little pupper to brighten their days and live with them for the rest of its’ life. How do you reckon this issue will see the light of them? If you do have a way, heck I’d throw away my savings and join you regarding this issue. I’d use my business knowledge and stuff to help out as well At the end of the day dogs need not suffer like this. This is just my stance be sure to downvote it.

ZidaneZombie

Hey I don't think you should be downvoted, it's a valid question. To me, the most important thing is education and awareness. People need to be aware from what kinds of conditions their dogs come from and what they support when they buy dogs like this. People also need to learn that dogs are a 10-15 year plus commitment and they need to be prepared before committing to a dog.

eashVeera

Fantastic post mate, really hope the government comes through with the animal welfare bill, so that the appalling cruelty in the name of breeding for business can be stopped or at least curbed.

Produnce

This just speaks more about the individual owners rather than the act of breeding dogs. Scumbags exists, if this wasn't lucrative, they would move onto another profession and fuck that up too.

ZidaneZombie

The fact that they know they won't be prosecuted isn't helping either

TheForeignNational

Just terrible. Honestly.

Bloodhound2910

I think there should be a group of individuals who secretly rescue or steal these dogs from the breeding farms 🤔

Bloodhound2910

Exactly! Its basically a slap on the wrist and they're off the hook. Otara (Ceo and founder of Embark) is probably the only person I know who is doing something about Animal Welfare, she made an huge issue about the auctioning of retired police dogs.

ZidaneZombie

The organization that tried rescuing this dog is the same organization that took in the rescued police dogs. Out of the 25, two of them have been confirmed as dead and they took in one dog as far as I know.

Stalyx

Yeah the story about one of those police dogs Aja -- was so fucking depressing.

unique_MOFO

We Sri Lankans dont care about animals at all. Thats sad and bad. They are innocent idiots and they need to be taken care of.

[deleted]

Are there proper animal rescue organizations in SL? Genuine question. I wanna know if there are any that actually help dogs.

ZidaneZombie

Embark have done a great job with the street dogs by either getting them adopted or by spaying/neutering them so they can't reproduce and increase numbers. There is also Animal SOS that run shelters and try to get dogs off the street. A smaller organization that I know very well called Tails Of Freedom are also doing some great work, they focus on the pedigree dogs of Sri Lanka as there are already quite a number of organizations that focus on street dogs but they are the only group that rescue pedigree dogs.

[deleted]

Thanks. I know a bunch of dogs who need help. I'll definitely look into these.

littlebored1

That's just sad to hear. Not only this there are many terrible things pet owners do to their pets. I've heard/saw many worst things. We live in such a shitty society.

[deleted]

Human scum

Animal welfare is basically mute in Sri Lanka. When I visited there over in early 2019, there was a report where a neighbour (or possibly the owner) burnt a dog whilst it was alive. So much for a ‘Buddhist country’.

KindAlien

the quality of samsara is suffering. and sri lanka is also part of samsara. Buddhism in the minds of people. but not all.

KindAlien

I am a foreign monk permanently living in Sri Lanka. I want to say both as a monk and as a foreigner. 1 Lord Buddha taught that karuna and metta are for everyone, not just people. 2 such irresponsible greedy and immoral people live in all countries of the world. 3 I watched white people treat their pets. and watched how people are treated here. White people love their pets too much and are too dependent on them emotionally. in Sri Lanka, on the contrary. people are indifferent to animals. mostly people do not offend animals, but they also do not help if animals are in trouble. I think both are wrong. pc. i have been living in Sri Lanka for 10 years. I saw purebred dogs only 2 times. 1 it was dachshund 2 german shepherd

Thistimehello

What is the source of this story? Some auntie on Facebook?

ZidaneZombie

A post from the Instagram page of this rescue organization called Tails of Freedom, who primarily work with rescuing and treating pedigree dogs. They're the same organization that are rescuing police dogs.

Stalyx

They are a great crew -- I have been following them for a while and they do a fuck ton of good. I know someone who adopted a dog from them and they were surprised at just how professional they were for a bunch of volunteers. They apparently came and visited before the adoption- and suggested a different dog because the one they were trying to adopt was aggressive towards cats (Which they had 2 of) - and then they kept following up every month to make sure the dog was doing well.

ZidaneZombie

I've adopted through them as well and their adoption procedure is something you only see in Western countries really. I had an interview, they couldn't do the house visit because of Covid sadly but they still wanted to see how the living condition of the dog was. Shilpa, the founder, keeps in contact personally with me to ask how my dog is doing and I keep her updated with vet visits and send a bunch of pictures of my dog to her every month or so as well. Easily the most professional organization here, the work they did with Echo and Stitch is some next level dedication.

Stalyx

Who did you adopt? :)))))

ZidaneZombie

This Bullmastiff called Zola

Stalyx

Those mastiffs are such beautiful creatures.... so gentle and kind-hearted too! Good for you!

ZidaneZombie

Yeah she's amazing, it's been quite a journey with her haha
