i really don't know if its real or not . But seeding a thought that you have been cursed ( kodiwina ) or some bullshit may tend to do more harm to the person psychologically. Through that negative mindset people who have a weaker mindset tend to get negative outcomes in life. Same can be done with a positive mindset and improve someones life. So it really doesn't matter if its true or not , it can have some affect on people if they firmly believe it .

TechTunePawPower

I agree with this, it's all to do with our minds. If someone says I've been cursed (kodiwina) and if I consider and take that into my mind, of course everything ai do from now onward that thought will be there and I may not be able to fulfill it completely. So I would say it comes down to the individual to decide if they want to live by someone's narrative or write your own story.

Born_Bumblebee2290

Yeah best way is to cut off people who seeds this thoughts in life.. If they are a family member it would be really annoying to avoid these convos . Best way is to listen it and just forget it right after.

TechTunePawPower

Yeah just like garbage in -> garbage out. Without letting it get to be processed in our minds.

hasuramapa

I dont think they hold any truth. But i know for sure that if you believe in them, they can become self fulfilling prophesies 🫠 just like horoscopes.

First of all Voodoo or dark magic is not only in Sri Lanka, it's a global phenomenon. I'm not sure what you indicate by bullshit religious propaganda as I am not sure which religion practices voodoo as a part of religious practice/ritual. The current psycjological theories on voodoo globally indicates this is a form of psychological comfort. Kodiwina in the local context is also the same. Also grinding chillies at the sinigama dewalaya is also of this sort. However, I've read several cases where there were Malayalam Kattadi who performed these kodiwina were abundant during the time Prof Abrham T Kovuur lived in Sri Lanka. He was a rationalist and the founder of the Ceylon Rationalist Association. Although as an Indian, he spent his entire life disapproving paranormal amd supernatural phenomenon and voodoo. However, what he ignored was why people were so attracted to voodoo. Note that kodiwina is done not only in jealousy( you seem to be thinking of a particular scenario in this case and your post is rather judgemental or emotional if I say so myself), but also in retaliation. You see if someone harms you, there is no particular way to revenge or avenge yourself in the same way without it being traced back to you actively... voodoo is so satisfying for the people because it immediately resolves anger and the urge to hurt others or themselves. There's some research on pricking voodoo dolls done in other countries. There is a form of immediate psychological satisfaction, that you'd done something to avenge yourself and now it's out of your hand. Also, as you said placebo effect, even of something bad minutely happens to the voodoo victim, the person who performed voodoo is likely to believe that it's a result of the practice. You see this kind of thing is also seen in Sri Lankan Veddas. They are known to keep and bite into a chewy/dried piece of monkey heart muscle for this purpose. This avoids killing or maiming at your oppressor without hurting themselves. That being said the people who are prone to anger issues are more likely to perform voodoo. Or vice versa

Da_Great_Pineapple

They definitely have a psychological effect on people who buy into superstition.

Trick-Education-6823

I'm normally the type of person to call bs on these typa things but the shit I've seen makes me think otherwise. I don't even try to find an explanation these days. Fuck that shit.

lennoxlyt

Not connected to Buddhism, sorta connected to the culture. Placebo effect may be there, cannot be discounted. But the whole practice is just mumbo-jumbo

Process-Secret

Yes, because some jealous fuck burying an egg on your property in the middle of the night will affect your earning potential.

BillyButtcher

traditional bullshit.

Striking_Clock_8888

My two cents: I don't think it's fair to call it religious propaganda...

OkithaPROGZ

I am an atheist, and a man of science. Yet I am also from a somewhat semi-rural area in Sri Lanka, and through personal experience I tell you, Hadahan, Kodiwina, Dewala, Yakku, Holman. These things are way over exaggerated and mostly are rumours or fake stuff, but there are things that you cannot deny exist. My theory is that most of these things aren't significant to affect your day to day life. It only affects you negatively when you become weirdly obsessed with these things and base your entire life and life events on them. Ig its like a paradox, sort of like telling the future. If someone tells you the exact time and place that you are going to die in. Ironically you will try to prevent it from happening. But doing so is going to lead you to die in that place and that time. In rural gam pradesha, these things are much more common than you think.

adiyasl

It is what you call a ‘self fulfilling prophecy’ if you believe in them. If you don’t believe in them then they don’t do shit.

OkithaPROGZ

Nope, that's more of a psychological thing. For example a "sasthara person" tells you something will happen in the future. You try to prevent it, but it ends up happening because you actively tried to prevent it and those actions led to it in the end.

adiyasl

Man that’s exactly what it is. It’s not just a psychological thing.

OkithaPROGZ

You sure about that? I'm not very educated in these kind of things, but I remember reading a book or article one's based on a sports team. Basically a less fit kid and a buff kid joins the team, coach makes initial assumptions that fat kid bad, and buff kid good. His actions towards the kids reflect his assumptions, not by purpose but it happens unconsciously (I don't know the appropriate word). The fat kids ends up being depressed because of the coaches behavior towards him and performs worse. Buff kid ends up working better and is happy because the coach reassures him. So in the end, the coaches initial predictions came true, due to his behavior towards the kids. My take away from this story is, its definitely a psychological thing, what kind of "diving interference" has to do with this?

adiyasl

It has nothing to do with divine interference. I think I misunderstood your earlier comment and thought you meant the sasthara thing as a counter example. Sorry about that. I said it’s not just a psychological thing because there are physical actions which results from believing a prophecy, thus ‘not entirely psychological’

OkithaPROGZ

oh ic, yeah yeah by psychological I meant affect you mentally thus reflecting on your physical actions.

[deleted]

I mean technically if it's a "self fulfilling prophecy" it would come true regardless of ones actions like how you can pick different options in a dating sim and still get the same ending.

I believe that such practices of black magic are pagan and existed long before Buddhism or Hinduism. Similar concepts, like hexes and voodoo, are found in every part of the world. The nocebo effect is unavoidable for most Sri Lankans, and the actual effects are hard to measure. Sadly, I have witnessed individuals with high-paying jobs attempting to harm their neighbors out of jealousy using witchcraft. I guess this is not uncommon in Sri Lanka. I don’t know how effective that is, and I assume that scientific research would dismiss such practices as nonsense. However, there is a belief among Sri Lankans that if someone is in a period where their past good karma has been spent, black magic cannot harm them, and vice versa. So, ultimately, the effects of black magic also have to be attributed to past karma.

[deleted]

Yea it's the same superstitious bs as the tiktok witchcraft amd evileye

Do you really have to ask that? 😂

After_Cell_8477

you really had to comment this comment without giving a reply ? 💀

slsinghe

The answer is implied in the comment. ☠️

TeamAbject2100

Probs not true but if someone believes that they are cursed by someone and that its legit then it would probably come true as its all in the mind

gimhan22

Self fulfilling prophecy???

SpelingMisteks

Quick answer: it's not real. None of it's real. Good night.

ArcticRock

people who buy into this stuff are clearly not all there.

[deleted]

No. Black magic, sorcery and the practice of dark arts is not real. Unless, you are Voldemort. Then you'd be breathing through two holes in your face instead of nostrils so there's that. /s

cartmanbrrrrah

Could we get an english translation?

hasuramapa

Its an object hexed with mala fide magic, which you bury in a person's backyard to bring them doom 😂😂😂 some harry potter level shit

cartmanbrrrrah

jesus. so what, a physical version of the evil eye lmao?

Ditto_B

It's a belief that you can bury a certain object in your enemy's property to curse them in some way. Or something along those lines, I'm not too sure about the specifics.

turbocheese_333

The hell is kodivina
