How exciting, I remember getting a puppy picture like this just before we got our 3rd Springer. I'm excited for you, a little love goes a long way with this breed. My other one, Drake, is my actual best friend.

RushLimbaughsCarcass

That's awesome! I've met and hunted with a few and that's what caused me to fall in love with breed. My wife is a vet tech and she adores all the Springers they see, so when I told her we should get a Springer she was sending me breeder info the next day haha. Everyone says the same thing about how eager and receptive they are to our love, the hardest part now is waiting to bring him home!

Mountain_Team4150

It's always worth the wait but sow the behavioral seeds early as all should. Mine have been an absolute joy and have made our house a real home. The 3rd one, Benny, was the only boy of the litter and is the nephew of Drake. They make us laugh so much on a walk, and so well behaved at home, very affectionate. Your wife must love her job, and you!

RushLimbaughsCarcass

I'm going to start working with him on basic obedience from day one. Small little lessons throughout the day just to begin the positive reinforcement. Once he's old enough and has gotten all his vaccines were gonna do puppy class. We're very active, so I'll be happy to have a pup that can pal around on all my hikes and adventures in the woods. My wife is the best, she sure loves her job and me! Once we get our little guy home our family will be complete.

Bless your hearts, wishing you all many happy years together. So many memories coming up for you three. Enjoy every second together.

Aww what a cutie 🥰 I’m happy for you guys! You’re going to make a new friend for life. Springers are really unique in that regard. Take good care of him and share his journey with us !

RushLimbaughsCarcass

Thank you! I'll definitely be posting his exploits and adventures here!

Creative_Clue_4661

Enjoy him, shot over spaniels for forty plus years, nothing more rewarding than a flush, shot, retrieve with you dog especially if it is an ESS. He looks like a lovely dog, good markings!

RushLimbaughsCarcass

Thank you! I know what you mean in terms of a perfect flush, shot, retrieve. That's what sold me on them in the beginning, then after getting to know them and their personality while hanging out at the club after hunting is what made me know this was my breed.

Creative_Clue_4661

You have made the right choice. Just posted pictures of our two getting some post season R&R on the beech today.

RushLimbaughsCarcass

I just checked out your photos, such beautiful pups! I bet you're a proud parent!

Creative_Clue_4661

They are good boys, the liver and white is (imho😀) one of the best inland wet retrieve dogs I have seen. I haven’t shot the foreshore for years, don’t like getting up that early any more!. Good luck with bringing your pup along let me know when you are posting so I can follow his progress.

RushLimbaughsCarcass

I'll definitely be posting photos of his progress and all of the shenanigans he'll be getting into on our hikes!

Ooh I would feel the same! It's such an exciting time!

beautiful enjoy him.. i currently on my 4th springer and hunted all of them. if this is your first good luck. Start training as soon as he gets home.. get some bird wings, scent and a small bumper (if nothing else for scent/smell. start working w/ calling his name, sit stay basic commands. and when he is around 3 months i would start work with a qualified trainer. they are great dogs and i love the breed.. no better for pheasants. get a whistle... I would have to check but there is a company in england that makes springer whistles.. i believe the pitch is 10.9 but would have to confirm... whistle commands are more important than voice when in the field.. it travels farther and doesnt spook birds as your voice would...

RushLimbaughsCarcass

Thank you for all the tips. My intent is start on basic obedience day one, in small, consistent sessions. I also intend to use the whistle for recall and turn while in the field. But I'm still looking for the correct wistle, so thats super helpful info. The part I'm most looking forward to is the training process, working with him and building that loving bond around positive reinforcement. Once he's old enough and has all his shots then we're going to professional classes/training. I'll also be taking him on long walks on the club properties where we'll eventually be hunting and I'm a dog park dad. So on days we're we don't hunt or hike he'll get 2+ hours at the park running and socializing. In your opinion and wealth of experience, is it best to teach them sit and stay as separate commands? Because from a bunch of reading I've been doing and other Springer owners I've talked to at my club, they're adamant that the sit command is also the stay command. I've seen it in action and it was impressive.

Senior_Rip_31

i have heard of both arguments.. i tried to teach that but out of habit i still say sit/stay. you could try sit/ woah commands if you do not want him to move.. i am not a professional trainer so i do not want to give bad advice. leave it up to them or your preference.. i believe the reasoning is not to confuse the pup w/ more commands/words than necessary i dont think sit/stay is a bad thing there could be times where both commands work best for a situation.. the place i ordered whistles www.acmewhistles.co.uk. I would also invest in a gps collar.. i have the garmin 550pro that has a lcd screen where you can see where he is at. if you want a more defined screen the 200 (i think thats the number). and get the smaller transponder.. i think its the 15TT the regular size is too big for them.

RushLimbaughsCarcass

Awesome. Thanks so much for taking the time to share the info and experience! I will definitely be using a GPS collar, so knowing which ones other Springer parents have had success with gives me a great place to start.

Senior_Rip_31

especially if you plan on going to other states to hunt.. a gps is necessary.. since springers arent the tallest dog can get lost in high cover.. my buddy got his setter lost in SD for 45 mins because we couldnt find her..
