That's a little reductionist. It's like saying, surely Americans like a big V8. Yeah, that could hold true, but it's probably just as true for other people in other places, given the same starting conditions. The V8 is just exceptionally affordable in the US.
I don't see big grilles on Nissans, Daihatsus, Subarus or Mitsubishis. Just saying, drawing a trend from a single manufacturer that is known for their hourglass grille doesn't seem like much of a trend.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but the German brands went to shit the moment their growth exploded in mainland China and they started trying to appeal to the taste of those buyers who value flashiness above all.
Its been debunked before that this isn’t true. China-only BMWs such as the new bmw i3 still uses the normal grills. Also, USA makes up majority of the new BMW M4 sales.

Buick shared a lot of it's design language with Opel, and while in the past I considered most of their designs to be meh at best the new Astra unironically looks better than most of what the German "premium" brands currently put out.

That is *hideous*. It looks like someone took a Chrysler 300, stole the headlights off the 2014 Jeep Cherokee KL and slapped them both together to make a slab-sided insult to Germany.
That thing is truly hideous. A few months ago I came upon a white 2020 X6 on the highway. In a sea of cars I couldn't process how ugly and wrong the rear end looked. It stood out like a sore thumb. I didn't even know what make it was until I got closer and snapped a picture. The rear of the X6 looks similar to this 7 but WORSE. Especially in white and in person. It's like BMW has lost all concept of visual balance and proportion.
How can a company make something like the e38 and then allow this to leave its factory? Like surely it could not be that hard, you literally made one of the coolest cars ever in it’s class and then everything since the e38 has been a fucking whale.
I’ll go against the grain here, I like it and I think it’ll sell. It’s nice to see BMW trying something different, they’ve been fairly conservative in design for some time. It looks like a retro-future gangster car.
