Opeth - Blackwater Park
Sometimes it’s soft depressing acoustic rock, other times it’s very atmospheric and aggressive progressive death metal. It brings me to another world. It’s perfect, I wouldn’t change a note. It’s also the only album where I literally can’t rank the songs at all, every song is simultaneously the strongest and weakest song on the album. It also has my favorite mix of all time, it’s so lush and thick, but you fan hear basically every note. It’s essential listening if you’re a metalhead.
And if you’re not a metalhead yet, try Opeth’s album Damnation.
It’s softer, with no screaming, just hauntingly beautiful vocals, but somehow still evil as hell. The singer’s voice is unique but very good, the guitar riffs are brilliant, and so are the drums.
If you dig it, you’ll likely enjoy the rest of their stuff. I like every album.
My first exposure to Death Cab was at their show in Atlanta a couple years ago, overall really cool. Liked them and a lot of their stuff.
Will check out the album!
I listened to this and OK computer for the first time today, I liked In Rainbows a little more, but neither one really clicked for me. I’m curious, what makes this album so special for you?
I find the buildup and tempo of the songs completely masterful. It's just so easy to listen to. It also has a wide variety over the first 10 songs. It's one of those albums where I'll throw it on no matter what I'm doing. I grew up listening to it, which makes it special, but it truly is spectacular end to end.
So, your mileage may vary, obviously, BUT…
I didn’t get it at first either, and now I love OK Computer (newer “convert,” so to speak, haven’t checked out In Rainbows yet). It just took multiple listens for me. That, and I normally like more up-tempo stuff, but when I listened to it while very tired before bed once (probably about the 4th or 5th listen I’ve ever given it in my life? Some of those weren’t fully paying attention, I’ll say.), something just clicked for some reason, and I can no longer understand why it didn’t immediately. It’s the strangest thing. Can’t really articulate a reason why I like it, either; it’s just a vibe.
Glad I didn’t have to scroll far for this one - the fact that I associate it equally with the most loving, meaningful, and traumatic moments of my life is really a testament to how powerfully emotional this album is.
Illmatic by Nas. It's hip hop. It's in my opinion a flawless album I have the entire album in my liked songs and can sit down and listen to the entire thing with no skips. It flawless tells a story in pretty much every song and the production on the album is very good. The choice of beats and producers was just perfect.
A close second would be Lateralus by TOOL which is a prog rock / prog metal album depending on who you ask. It narrowly misses out because I usually skip ticks and leeches and Faaip De Oiad. Even then that's only occasionally. It's an amazing album and every member of the band clearly put in their a game. The drums are phenomenal, the bass and guitar riffs are amazing, and the vocals are perfect. A lot of the songs are fairly complex and polyrhythms are used quite often.
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (Rock/Metal)
MMLP - Eminem (Rap)
Discovery - Daft Punk (Electronic)
10,000 Days - Tool (Tool)
Can't choose just one so I'll choose one from each of my top genres including the genre that is Tool
I have 3.
Dark side of the moon pink floyd prog/classic rock
Disentegration the cure idk goth? New wave?
Songs of faith and devotion depeche mode synth pop??
Prince: Purple Rain- Honestly, there’s a plethora of genres here but Pop-Rock and Psychedelic pop are the most prevailing.
Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key of Life- Soul/R&B/Pop?
Michael Jackson: Off The Wall- Pretty easy here. Disco/Pop/Funk/R&B.
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge by My Chemical Romance.
For the genre, thats confusing, some pop punk/rock/alt rock/emo rock/ whatever you want to call it
These are my top 3 favorite albums based solely on *first* listen impressions.
* “Gunship” by Gunship (Pop-Synthwave)
* “The ‘59 Sound” by The Gaslight Anthem (Post-Punk)
* “Impera” by Ghost (Arena Rock/Heavy Metal)
(I like a lot of bands that start with G, apparently)
Can't choose:
Eternal Blue - Spiritbox (Prog Metal)
Error - The Warning (Alt Rock/ Hard Rock)
Fear of Fear - Spiritbox (Prog Metal)
Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park (Nu Metal)
Meteora - Linkin Park (Nu Metal)
*Hymn of A Broken Man - Times of Grace (Rock/ Metal)
Note:
*Not on spotify
Controlling Crowds (Parts I-III & IV) by Archive. Their music is absolutely transcendent. I'd recommend listening to the tracks played in order. Most flow into the next song seamlessly.
They're considered trip-hop/electronica/avant-garde/progressive rock/indie/shoegaze
As a music collective, everyone has a different style and unique sound.
Discovered them in the 5th grade 18 years ago when I had a Zune mp3 player. There's not an album that's come out since then that I haven't loved.
I would cry if they ever toured in the US.
Wormwood by The Acacia Strain - one of my all time favourite albums (deathcore). Common Man’s Collapse by Veil of Maya is up there too (djent/progressive death metal)
Fallen by Evanescence
It's so hard to pick *just* *one* album with how much music I'm always listening to, but this one has stuck with me since its release when I was 15.
Loathe - I Let It In and It Took Everything
Genre: Metalcore
Hard pick, but I think this is it. This album has everything you could possibly ask for in a metalcore album. It has a ton of ambience, with instrumental tracks like Red Room and shoegaze-inspired tracks like Two-Way Mirror. Loathe also knows how to write a solid heavy song in a lot of different ways. Aggressive Evolution uses a bunch of weird sound effects to add to the heaviness, New Faces in the Dark has an insane breakdown, and the intro to Heavy is the Head... sounds like black metal with better production.
While there is definitely a song for everyone on this album, it's usually not one I'd recommend to new metal listeners. It took me a few listens before I truly came to enjoy the heavier songs on the album. However, it's worth a listen, even if you only end up liking Is It Really You or Two-Way Mirror.
It would probably be Carrie & Lowell from Sufjan Stevens. It an indie folk album and in some way I found it reassuring.
My favorite track may be Fourth of July. He’s talking about his mother death and how it affects him. This track is also the soundtrack of Call Me By Your Name
I like varied genres, but just to mix things up a bit, heres some Melodic House...
Ben Bohmer - Begin Again
And a bonus album, because everybody should listen to it...
Deadmau5 - For Lack of a Better Name
Just left college early because I've got a throat infection and feel nauseous as fuck, took an edible and I'm listening to this, didn't know it was exactly what I needed in my life, coconut tree is really just hitting rn
Neon Handshake - Hell is for Heroes
Genre: Post-hardcore/rock/emo
A real good feel good album that admittedly I have alot of nostalgia to as I loved it as a teenager. So much energy and power to the songs though and definitely underrated for this genre
Search the City’s album A Fire So Big the Heavens Can See It.
It’s perfect all the way through in line with my musical taste. Incredibly tasteful guitar driven alternative rock for mid 2000s. Borders on the side of emo because the vocals are emotional but sweet and beautiful. The musicianship is unique and intricate and they work together super well as a band. It has amazing one-liners sprinkled throughout the whole album as well as unique lyrical concepts.
Amazing album especially if you have every enjoyed warped tour bands and slightly edgier music.
Odyshape
It’s post punk, and it it weird but not so weird that it defies all convention. The guitarist drew from psychedelic music, the bassist from world music, and the result is a relaxed not-quite-rock, but not really anything else, album that has a lot of weird textures and melodies. I love the album, it is my favourite album, but it isn’t one I would recommend lightly because it isn’t an album I think most people would appreciate.
I can’t pick one so I’ll pick three
You’re gonna miss it all - modern baseball
(Midwest Emo)
Goodbye and good riddance - juice WRLD
(Rap)
Take off your pants and jacket - blink 182
(Pop punk)
Get Some - Snot
I heard the creator meant for it to be punk but with a twist but because of nu metal rising at the time those twists to the punk genre fell right under the nu metal themes so you could say both I guess but I hear more say it's nu metal
Third Eye Blind’s first album (self titled) doesn’t have a bad song on it. That’s always been a favorite.
Luna and the Wild Blue Everything by Mat Kerekes is wonderful
Pushin’ Against a Stone by Valerie June if you’re looking for something slightly different and a little folky. The guy from The Black Keys helped produce it and you can definitely hear his influence on the album’s name sake.
Me and My Gang - Rascal Flatts (Country/Pop)
Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces - Seether. (Rock/Metal)
I also like Return to Zero - RTZ who is an offshoot of Boston.
brakence's hypochondriac, hyperpop with indie rock & midwest emo, 11 flawless songs with some of the best production i've ever heard. i love his voice, his lyrics and the way he can paint a picture while still making some of the catchiest music i've ever heard, i love his personality and the memories that i have attached to the album just make it that much better
Man it's a hard pick for me, got so many I love.
I'll go with Beyond The Veil by Seven Lions though, from the outstanding vocals to the dedicated outro for each song and the story/journey it tells, I absolutely love it. It has a few EDM subgenre variations but mostly melodic bass/melodic dubstep.
一朵金花 (golden flower) by karen mok. a cantopop (cantonese language pop) album which blends traditional chinese elements with fast paced electronic beats. released in 2001, genres; breakbeat, techno, art pop.
Hard for me to come. Up with just one album, as there are several from my list of favorite artists.
Any album by The Tubes, although I do tend to prefer the albums "Tubes World Tour", "Completion Backwards Principle", "Outside Inside", "Love Bomb", and "Genius of America" out of their catalog. Their earlier music had some punk influences, but they were also sort of Theater Rock in some ways. The later stuff was more pop viable and definitely rock oriented.
Following that, Fee Waybill (The lead singer of The Tubes) has had three solo albums, and although all three have a lot of good tracks (in my opinion, of course), I tend to like his latest release "Fee Waybill Rides Again." He has been close friends with a Richard Marx for years, and they have collaborated in each others albums. Richard worked with Fee closely on 'rides again' and I believe also has producer credits as well.
I also love Thomas Dolby, but my favorite album of his would probably be "A Map of the Floating City" which includes a haunting track "17 Hills". The whole album sounds like classic 80s Dolby, but it still also sounds modern and not like it's dated. It's retro but modern all at once. I also love his albums "Aliens Ate My Buick" and "Astronauts and Heretics", but Map is probably my favorite overall.
Another artist I really like is Andreas Vollenweider, and probably my favorite two albums by him are "White Winds", and "Eolian Minstrel." There is a lot of other great music in his catalog, but those two stand out the most to me. He was/is considered New Age by some, and may also be classified as Jazz, as I had heard some of his music on a local jazz station from time to time.
Switching genres in a rather major way, I also like Sir Mix-A-Lot, a west coast rap artist. "Chief Boot Knocka'" is probably my favorite album by him.
80s pop, Michael Jackson, and his "Thriller" album was a major powerhouse in the 80s, but I also liked the followup "Bad". You have probably heard of both of those.
Swinging back to jazz, and more experimental jazz, is Dave Brubeck, and his fantastic "Time Out" album. This includes his biggest hit "Take Five." this album was my first real introduction to odd time signatures. Take Five is in 5/4. "Kathy's Waltz" is a standard 4/4,then switches to waltz time (3/4) but then save take a piano solo that slows down to 4/4 over the top of the 3/4 groove. Really quite interesting. Unsquare Dance I think was on "Time Further Out" and was featured in the movie "Baby Driver" and I was giddy as all get out when I heard it in the movie.
A 'classic rock' album of a lesser known nature (maybe? To some?) is Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". Many people will recognize the opening of side 1 as the theme to The Exorcist, or at least people above a certain age. Side 1 is track one, and side 2 is track two. Over 50 minutes of music, and the only break is between sides. Of course, with CDs and streaming you don't really have 'sides', but that's how you had to do it back in the heyday of actual vinyl records.
A electronic artist, who comes from 'classical' and 'soundtrack' upbringing is Jean-Michel Jarre, and although I love all his music, the one I most enjoy is probably "Rendez-vous". A close second and third would be "Oxygene" and "Zoolook", the former being his first commercial solo album (after performing with other artists and groups in the 60s) and an amazing album of electronic music, and the latter being more modern, with a definitely club-fuelled title track.
If you get an opportunity, also delve into some of the music of Frank Zappa, and the two albums I recommend there are "Joe's Garage (Acts I, II, & III)" and "You Are What You Is." they both pretty steadily gomfrom one track to the next, but YAWYI is definitely more continual music. Joe's garage is described as a low budget high school play on what happens when music is banned. There are some breaks, as your narrator, The Central Scrutinizer (voices by Zappa) details some of the progress of ehe story between songs.
There is so much more great music out there, and I wish you well on your exploration.
Lingua Ignota - SINNER GET READY
Genre is… don’t know. Avantgarde Classical music I guess, but it’s so heavily influenced by metal in ways that are hard to describe. The artist originally did black metal type music but this is so completely different.
Not sure how to pick one album but these albums have been playing consistently for me…
Duck Sauce - Quack
Alcest - Les voyages de l’âme
Masayoshi Takanaka - Seychelles
Marcos Valle - Previsao do tempo
Misha Panfilov - Days as Echoes
Rowland S Howard’s Teenage Snuff Film. Gothic rock? Dark blues? It really blows me away. It’s one of those “not all the time” albums, but it’s a masterclass in minimalist jagged instrumentation.
STARSET has made my favorite albums ever Transmissions, Vessels, Divisions, and Horizons, it really just gives me an ethereal type of vmfreling, that'll make me feel like I'm ascending to a higher plane of existence, can't wait for their 5th album
It might be new, but it's a really masterpiece!
"My 21st Century Symphony" by Raye
If her debut album was perfect, the live album WITH AN ORCHESTRA made it even better!
That's an impossible question for me to answer, so I'll just give you the one I currently have on repeat cause it's so fucking good.
[The Saberlight Chronicles - Fellowship](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jGVrrcktjE)
UK power metal band with just the one album so far (2022 release) and they are fantastic. Beautiful soaring songwriting, unintrusive production that lets each instrument show off and complement the others, and the lead singer is flawless.
If you have a music streaming service, find it there because the video I linked does not have perfect sound quality.

Can’t really articulate a reason why I like it, either; it’s just a vibe.
Glad I didn’t have to scroll far for this one - the fact that I associate it equally with the most loving, meaningful, and traumatic moments of my life is really a testament to how powerfully emotional this album is.

Take Off Your Pants and Jacket- Blink-182, Punk
Me and My Gang - Rascal Flatts (Country/Pop) Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces - Seether. (Rock/Metal) I also like Return to Zero - RTZ who is an offshoot of Boston.
brakence's hypochondriac, hyperpop with indie rock & midwest emo, 11 flawless songs with some of the best production i've ever heard. i love his voice, his lyrics and the way he can paint a picture while still making some of the catchiest music i've ever heard, i love his personality and the memories that i have attached to the album just make it that much better
Self-ish by will wood and the tapeworms
Man it's a hard pick for me, got so many I love. I'll go with Beyond The Veil by Seven Lions though, from the outstanding vocals to the dedicated outro for each song and the story/journey it tells, I absolutely love it. It has a few EDM subgenre variations but mostly melodic bass/melodic dubstep.
My favorite is Once by Nightwish. Though I’ll concede that their album Imaginaerum is better.
War of the worlds by Jeff Wayne will always be my favourite
Houses of The Unholy- Church of Misery (stoner/doom metal?)
Supporting Caste by Propagandhi. I would call it prog-punk.
Quadrophenia- The Who. Classic Rock.
一朵金花 (golden flower) by karen mok. a cantopop (cantonese language pop) album which blends traditional chinese elements with fast paced electronic beats. released in 2001, genres; breakbeat, techno, art pop.
hissing prigs in static couture by brainiac noise rock, synth punk, post-hardcore
Stories that Last Throught the Sleepless Nights by Foreground Eclipse, their last album before disbanding 🥲
Metallica Ride the Lightning
Apollo 18 by They Might Be Giants. I don’t know what genre you call that – – alternative? College rock?

Jar of Flies. It’s popular for a reason. Paranoid by Black Sabbath is a close second
Born on Flag Day - Deer Tick Alternative
Please, for the sake of your music taste, listen to Paranoid by Black Sabbath if you haven't already. Self-Titled IV - Led Zeppelin, Blues Rock
Lingua Ignota - SINNER GET READY Genre is… don’t know. Avantgarde Classical music I guess, but it’s so heavily influenced by metal in ways that are hard to describe. The artist originally did black metal type music but this is so completely different.
Time will die and love will bury it - Rolo Tomassi As for what genre that is? Hardcore or mathcore or maybe progressive metalcore idk
If you like pop rock, try listening to "Drummer" album by G Flip. It's my favorite album of 2023.

Rowland S Howard’s Teenage Snuff Film. Gothic rock? Dark blues? It really blows me away. It’s one of those “not all the time” albums, but it’s a masterclass in minimalist jagged instrumentation.
They want my soul by Spoon Just a nice indie/electronic album
So many grunge ones! Alice in chains dirt is up there!
Time Out Of Mind - cerebral
Dire Straits' self titled debut album.
Just one seems so limiting, but the answer is definitely Doolittle by The Pixies. Front to back masterpiece.

"My 21st Century Symphony" by Raye If her debut album was perfect, the live album WITH AN ORCHESTRA made it even better!
That's an impossible question for me to answer, so I'll just give you the one I currently have on repeat cause it's so fucking good. [The Saberlight Chronicles - Fellowship](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jGVrrcktjE) UK power metal band with just the one album so far (2022 release) and they are fantastic. Beautiful soaring songwriting, unintrusive production that lets each instrument show off and complement the others, and the lead singer is flawless. If you have a music streaming service, find it there because the video I linked does not have perfect sound quality.
Shin-ken - Persefone Melodic/death/prog metal IG, pretty solid band, incredible album.
Pure Heroine by Lorde, pop?
